CAF Champions League: South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns Trounce Remo Stars 1-5

In a one-sided fight at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Melodi Sundowns defeated Nigerian champion Remo Stars 1-5 in the second round of the CAF Champions League.

Following their third defeat of the Ogun-based team, Katsina United, Remo needed a much-needed result to win the match.

However, South Africa, who finished second in the previous year’s edition of Africa’s premier club competition, were the ones to break the deadlock and take the lead just 12 minutes into the match.

Tashreeq Matthews struck brilliantly just outside the box to give the home team the lead.

With the scoreline intact, both teams appeared to be heading for the end. Three minutes before the 45th minute mark, Namibian striker Peter Shalulile beat his man to slot the ball past Obassa Adebiyi in the goal.

Sundowns began the second half by examining Remo. When Miguel Reisinho tapped in from close range in the 61st minute, Khuliso Mudau broke from the flanks and laid the ball for Portuguese star, Miguel Reiso.

Samson Olasupo hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute to reduce the deficit with Remo pouring forward.

Arthur Sales, who had just finished scoring, added his name to Sundown’s scoresheet with a superb finish just before the break, adding 0-4.

In Nigeria, Sundowns dominate.

Olasupo’s men, according to Coach Daniel Ogunmodede, pulled one back. However, Tsiki Nsabeleng, the Pretoria-based South African champions, increased the lead in the 85th minute. His first Masandawana goal was that!

On October 26th, the match’s return leg will take place at Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Aston Villa Fight Back To Defeat Tottenham

Aston Villa fought back to defeat Tottenham 2-1 on Sunday, but Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia provided more misery for the north Londoners.

At the start of the first half, Rodrigo Bentancur gave Thomas Frank’s side a 1-0 lead.

Before the break, Rogers had already struck the equalizer, and Buendia came off the bench to give the game a final whistle.

Since replacing the fired Ange Postecoglou in the close-season, Frank’s struggled with Tottenham’s woeful home form in the Premier League, which includes 11 defeats and just three victories in 18 league games.

Although Postecoglou’s last term saw the majority of home losses, Frank’s short tenure at the club’s 62, 000-seat stadium has had mixed results, with boos audible following defeats to Bournemouth in August and a 1-1 draw with lowly Wolves last month.

Tottenham finished seventh overall after suffering a second defeat in Frank’s eight league games as a result of their seven-game unbeaten run.

Villa have won five straight victories, three in the top flight, and two in the Europa League, extending their unbeaten streak to eight matches, ending their longest winless start to a season since 1964.

After only one point from their six previous visits to English rivals currently in the Champions League, Villa finally defeated a top-four rival away from home.

As they re-enter the race for Champions League qualification, Unai Emery’s team is tenth place.

Due to fitness issues, Frank’s pre-game warm-up included a broken wrist, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma, Destiny Udogie, and Dominic Solanke.

Tottenham only needed five more minutes to take the lead despite that blow.

Micky van de Ven headed the cross for Mohammed Kudus before sending it back across the net and past Bentancur, who had a skillful finish past Emiliano Martinez from eight yards.

In honor of his wife, who is expecting the couple’s second child, Bentancur celebrated by tucking the ball under his shirt to make a bump.

Matty Cash, a Villa defender, fired a quick strike into the area as the visitors attempted to stop the rain.

Wilson Odobert, a Tottenham forward, threatened with a low drive that Martinez palmed away.

However, after 37 minutes, Rogers was magnificent and level.

The wait for the England midfielder’s first goal this year was well worth it.

Guglielmo Vicario’s frustration with his outstretched arm was apparent when Rogers unloaded a stunning strike 20 yards from the goal.

Ezri Konsa blocked Odobert’s goal-bound rocket before Martinez denied Joao Palhinha as Tottenham attempted to lead in the second half.

However, Mathys Tel was forced to leave Tottenham with a large bandage around his knee as he limped off.

Villa capitalized on Frank’s problems in the 77th minute to make the most of them.

Lucas Digne was found by Cash’s cross-field pass, and he teed up Buendia, who fired a fine finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

In stoppage time, Tottenham should have been saved, but the on-loan Paris Saint-Germain striker scooped over with the goal at his mercy.

Medvedev Wins First Title In Over Two Years In Kazakhstan

In the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Almaty, Danil Medvedev defeated Frenchman Corentin Moutet 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to claim his first title in two years.

Read more about Medvedev’s $76,000 fine for Australian Open antics.

Medvedev, who is 14th in the world after winning in Rome in May 2023, has lost six finals, including the US Open that year and the Australian Open that year.

He dropped out of Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and Flushing Meadows this year after falling in Melbourne’s second round.

After the US Open, Medvedev collaborated with Rohan Goetzke, Thomas Johansson, Thomas Johansson, and other players.

His 21st career victory also increases his chances of making it to the ATP Finals, where he moves up three spots to 12th place, just 875 points behind Lorenzo Musetti, who is eighth and last.

It is fantastic, he said. Although I wasn’t particularly happy with my performance in certain situations of the match, winning feels amazing,” Medvedev said.

He continued, “In the most crucial points, I played well.”

Next week, the Russian will compete in Vienna’s ATP 500 to keep his upward trend.

Medvedev won the decider after two evenly matched sets.

Moutet saved four break points, the former world No., and was close to breaking at 2-1. At 4-3, the Frenchman was able to break him before deciding to end the match with his serve.

“I’m happy I won the title after the last game, which was incredible.

It is a continuation of my humorous 21 titles, “said Medvedev.

After falling short of Doha in 2020 and Mallorca this year, Corentin, 26, is still waiting for his first career title.

‘United Have So Much To Win’, Amorim Plays Down Anfield Record

Ruben Amorim, manager of Manchester United, has downplayed the significance of previous victories, insisting that his players have “so much to win” if they win against Liverpool as they gear up for a challenging trip to Anfield.

Only one victory came from a Wayne Rooney strike at Anfield in 2016, which was disappointing for United’s fans over the past ten years.

Before that, Juan Mata’s unforgettable brace was the difference-makers’ 2–1 victory.

When asked if he would keep his players motivated by those moments, the manager replied that his approach was more focused on the present than the past.

In a pre-game conference on Sunday, Amorim said, “You have so many things to use with our players, like winning back-to-back games, to have that moment, and that can completely change,” Amorim said. “When you win, the week was so different, and you can use that to have that moment,” Amorim said.

So we can use a lot of different techniques with the players. They don’t seem to recall those games, in my opinion. Unfortunately, today’s football players don’t watch as many games. Therefore, the hardest part is that we have so much to use.

I don’t need to refer to those games because there is so much to be won if we perform and win the following one. We just need to demonstrate to them what that might entail for our future.

However, the United manager claims that his players are ready to face the challenge head-on.

“We demonstrated last year. And he claimed that the environment is more important than the way we begin the game.

“The environment can change,” he said. They will, of course, have an opportunity to win. We are prepared to experiment with loud environments, but we are not afraid of that. And if you looked back last year, not this year, but last year, we still sometimes play better in that environment than the pressure at home.

In a stadium that generates early momentum, he stressed the importance of a strong opening.

We never know what will happen, therefore. It’s crucial to get the game started well, do a good warm-up, feel that the first few minutes will be difficult, he continued.

So I believe they are prepared, but I believe we need to get ready for the impact, particularly at the beginning of the game.

Scottish Champions Celtic Suffer First Defeat At Dundee In 37 Years

The Scottish champions’ shock 2-0 defeat to Celtic put a dent in their title defense on Sunday, sinking them to their first defeat at Dundee in 37 years.

Before the break, Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers scored an own goal just before the break after Clark Robertson’s first-half header caused Brendan Rodgers’ side to fall behind.

After a disappointing season that saw Celtic fans eliminated from the Champions League qualifying stages, Celtic fans had disrupted the game by throwing hundreds of balls onto the field.

Since Tommy Coyne’s goal in 1988 was the only goal scored for the Dark Blues, Celtic have lost in the league for the first time at Dens Park.

Celtic were booed off at the end, but they are still five points clear of surprise rival Hearts when they face them at Tynecastle on Saturday.

Celtic will face Sturm Graz in a Thursday Europa League game before the trip to Edinburgh.

Fans of Bombard Pitch

After the first whistle, when Celtic fans started throwing different colored balls at the pitch, which caused a delay while they were cleared, the game came to a quick halt.

Celtic’s striker Kelechi Iheanacho took a quick shot to the outside of the post, but Robertson’s unmarked header from a Cameron Congreve corner gave Dundee the lead in the 17th minute.

As Celtic continued to put pressure on, Kieran Tierney and Yang Hyun-Jun both made errors.

However, Congreve skimmed past Celtic centre-back Liam Scales in stoppage time before heading over to Joe Westley to skim the ball in off the helpless Carter-Vickers.

After the break, Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate fired wide from the edge of the area before Ashley Hay, a substitute for Dundee, curled home from 12 yards.

Iheanacho was thwarted by Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken twice, but Celtic was unfortunate.

Referee Matthew MacDermid immediately pointed to the spot after Hatate’s shot appeared to be blocked by Paul Digby’s arm inside the Dundee area.

Kane Scores Again As Bayern Beat Dortmund To Stay Top Of Bundesliga

Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at home on Saturday, marking their 11th victory from 11 games in all competitions this season. Harry Kane scored for the seventh straight game.

With 21 points from seven games this season, Bayern managed to stay five points clear of the top of the Bundesliga table thanks to the win.

“It was a big game,” he said. Kane, who scored his 104th goal for the champions, told reporters, “Dortmund were unbeaten for a while and we were too.”

“Those victories must be kept on track.” That’s how we’re faring so well.

Dortmund finished fourth, seven points adrift of Bayern, after the defeat.

Kane was named in the number 10 slot by Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, following Nicolas Jackson, who had just started for Chelsea.

In the first 10 minutes, Kane was quick to show off his creative prowess, threading passes for wingers Michael Olise and Luis Diaz, both of whom had excellent chances.

In the following 21 minutes, Kane scored his 400th goal at club level with a typical poacher’s goal from a corner.

The forward has now scored 19 goals for Bayern this season, including 12 league goals, in 11 of their 11 games this season.

Dortmund were better in the second half after the opening period’s one-way traffic and should have equaled when Bayern’s Serhou Guirassy teed up Karim Adeyemi, who slipped while attempting to shoot.

With 11 minutes left, Jobe Bellingham made a late substitution and hesitating in possession of his own box, hesitating Olise could score.

Kane claimed that he had spoken with his compatriot Bellingham about the error and that he had been told to “keep doing what you’re doing.”

The England captain continued, “He has a lot of potential.”

In the 84th minute, Dortmund put a stop to their late pressure, but Julian Brandt was able to convert a risky Julian Ryerson cross.

Kane stated to reporters following the victory that talks will take place about a contract extension with Bayern as his current contract expires at the end of the following season.

“There’s no hurry, but I believe things are going really well.” I’ve already expressed my happiness at Bayern.

Grimaldo at the double, and more.

As Bayern Leverkusen prepare to face reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in an international match, Alex Grimaldo scored twice as they won 4-3 at Mainz, ending an eight-game unbeaten run.

Leverkusen moved up to fifth place in the table, on par with Dortmund, with the win.

Leverkusen took the lead 11 minutes after Grimaldo’s spot-kick, and Christian Kofane doubled their lead midway through the second half, finishing off a clever team move with a low shot into the bottom right corner.

On the 34th minute, Lee Jae-sung scored after Loic Bade’s clearance hit his own player.

Leverkusen pressurized Mainz for an error before half-time, and Jonas Hofmann won the penalty and scored Grimaldo for tap-in, his sixth goal in ten games.

Leverkusen were 4-2, but Martin Terrier’s strike three minutes prior set up a nervy ending with Armindo Sieb’s strike shortly after.

Leverkusen eventually hung on, finishing with the first goal in each of their seven matches this year.

We’ve started gaining some points, Hofmann told Sky after a bumpy start to the season.

We want to continue that momentum and establish our footing with our still-new coach, Kamal Hjulmand.

Erik ten Hag was replaced in early September by Dane Hjulmand.

Christoph Baumgartner scored both goals for RB Leipzig at home against promoted Hamburg, either side of Albert Sambi Lokonga’s strike.

Leipzig lost to Bayern 6-0 in their opening game of the season, but they have since improved significantly with five victories and a draw.

Stuttgart also won 3-0 at Wolfsburg to advance to third place, with goals coming from Germany duo Maximilian Mittelstaedt and Angelo Stiller, both of whom were former Wolfs Tiago Tomas.

Promoted Cologne lost 1-1 to Augsburg at home, while Werder Bremen equaled Heidenheim with a draw of 2-3.
