Bayern’s Kompany Still Hopeful Of Top-Eight Champions League Finish

Even though Bayern only has a slim chance of placing first in the Champions League top eight ahead of their most recent league game against Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday, Allianz Arena coach Vincent Kompany says, “anything is possible,”

In the new league phase, Bayern are currently 15th, need to beat Slovan, and need to avoid the knockout play-off round and advance to the last 16.

“We’re playing at home”, Kompany told reporters on Tuesday. “This is a special place for us and here, anything is possible…

” We’ve got no control over what happens in the other games, it’s all about our own performance.

“We won’t have an issue until the late in the game, and maybe we’ll learn that we need another goal or two, so we can take a little more risk.”

The six-time European champions have struggled for consistency in the Champions League this season, particularly away from home, losing on the road to Aston Villa, Barcelona, and Feyenoord.

Bayern are no longer a top team, according to Thomas Mueller, who insisted Joshua Kimmich’s comments had been taken out of context.

“What you look at the table, I know what he meant. The fact that you don’t need to play for a championship team in January but rather in May is nice in football.

Alonso Says Nigeria’s Victor Boniface In Talks To Leave Leverkusen

Victor Boniface is reportedly in talks to leave the club at the moment, according to Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Sky Germany have reported Boniface, 24, is set for a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, for a transfer fee in excess of 50 million euros ($52 million).

Boniface signed for 20 million euros in Leverkusen 18 months ago from the Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise.

In 49 games for the club, he hasn’t played since picking up a hamstring injury while on international duty in November, where he has scored 29 goals and added 11 assists.

Before Wednesday’s Champions League game against Sparta Prague, the Nigerian striker missed training.

“We need to wait while discussions with the club take place. We’re preparing without Boni”, Alonso told reporters Tuesday.

“We will see. Although we need to wait a little longer, the rest of our squad is already fit and ready.

” It’s the last Champions League game and that’s our focus. “

Alonso stated that Leverkusen was “looking forward to signing more players during the winter window” and that he was “very pleased with the squad and our quality… and will be” at the end of the window.

In Boniface’s absence, Patrik Schick has returned to form for Leverkusen with 13 goals in his past nine league games.

Schick said Tuesday a possible Boniface departure” doesn’t change very much… I’ve always been focused on myself and I’m not looking at anyone else.

Whether Victor is present or not, I’ll continue to go as I have.

The 29-year-old Schick, who attended Sparta Prague as a youth, expressed with a smile that he was anticipating some more personal attention from the visiting fans.

“I expect them to insult me from the stands,” I said. “It will be fun.”

FA Overturns Lewis-Skelly’s Controversial Red Card In Wolves Vs Arsenal

Arsenal have successfully appealed against the red card shown to Myles Lewis-Skelly in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Wolves, meaning the 18-year-old escapes a three-match ban.

At Molineux in the first half, Wolves broke clear from an Arsenal corner after tripping Matt Doherty.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was shocked when the VAR did not ask the referee to review the incident.

One of the outspoken critics of the call, former England captain Alan Shearer, referred to it as “one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in a long time.”

The Football Association stated in a statement that a “self-empowered regulatory commission removed Myles Lewis-Skelly’s three-match suspension and upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal.”

Lewis-Skelly, who has impressed in his breakthrough season with the Gunners ‘ first team, is now free to face Manchester City and Leicester in the Premier League, either side of the second leg of Arsenal’s League Cup semi-final against Newcastle.

Arsenal were nearly half-time a man down before Wolves’ Joao Gomes was also sent off, but they still managed to hold on to stay six points clear of Liverpool in the Premier League with a late strike.

Dortmund’s Nmecha Sidelined For ‘Weeks’ With Knee Injury

After the German midfielder injured his knee ligaments, Borussia Dortmund will need to be without him for “a few weeks,” according to interim coach Mike Tullberg on Tuesday.

Nmecha went down after a challenge and was subbed out 12 minutes into Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Werder Bremen.

One of only a few Dortmund players to have avoided criticism for its recent run of poor form has been the 24-year-old Manchester City youth product.

In Wednesday’s final Champions League group match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Dortmund takes on.

If other outcomes come in the way, the struggling side could still be in the top eight with a win despite having only won one of their previous ten games.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel stated to reporters on Tuesday, “It’s not a simple situation, but every club goes through challenging times, and the task is to overcome these challenges.”

“We just need to chalk up some wins and experience some success again,” says the statement of a great team.

Ex-Premier League Referee Coote Hid Sexuality Over Abuse Fears

Disgraced former Premier League referee David Coote says he hid his sexuality over fears of the abuse he would receive for being gay, apologising for the actions that led to his sacking.

Coote, 42, was suspended in November after footage emerged of him making derogatory remarks about former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in a video that was widely shared on social media.

Further photographs shared by the Sun newspaper in November, which the newspaper said were taken during Euro 2024, appeared to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled-up bank note.

He was dismissed by referees body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) last month.

In an interview with the Sun published on Tuesday, Coote revealed he is gay.

“I have received deeply unpleasant abuse during my career as a ref and to add my sexuality to that would have been really difficult”, he said.

He added: “I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well — a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that’s led me to a whole course of behaviours”.

Coote said he and his late mother had received death threats following decisions he had made on the pitch and cited his own example to show how relentless abuse from the stands and on social media could impact the mental health of officials.

‘ Escape route ‘

Coote told the Sun he had used cocaine as an “escape route”.

“I’ve had long&nbsp, periods&nbsp, where I’ve not used it -— but it was one of the escape routes I had”, he said.

“Just getting away from the stresses, the relentlessness of the job. It fills me with a huge sense of shame to say that I took that route”.

In a separate statement released late on Monday, Coote said he had been through one of the most difficult periods of his life.

“I take full responsibility for my actions, which fell way below what was expected of me”, he said.

“I am truly sorry for any offence caused by my actions and for the negative spotlight it put on the game that I love. I hope people will understand that they were private moments taken during very low times in my life. They do not reflect who I am today or what I think”.

Coote’s contract was terminated by the PGMOL in December following its investigation into the initial video, in which he used offensive language about Klopp.

His behaviour is under investigation by the Football Association and European governing body UEFA.

Former Aston Villa and Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger came out in 2014 after his career ended but there has not been an active out gay footballer playing in the Premier League.

Former international rugby referee Nigel Owens, who came out as gay in 2007, said he understands why Coote hid his sexuality.

“People wonder why we are still talking about this, why people are still needing to live the lie”, he told the BBC. “You just need to look at some of the comments on there (social media) which are totally unbelievable”.

Rashford Should Be ‘Banished’ From Man Utd Dressing Room, Says Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes claims Marcus Rashford should be “banished” from the dressing room because he let his teammates down.

The England international hasn’t played for United since December 12th, when manager Ruben Amorim left him out of the squad for every game since, with the exception of one where he was an unused substitute.

Amorim reportedly cited a lack of effort in his suggestion on Sunday that he would prefer to have 63-year-old goalkeeper Jorge Vital in his squad over the 27-year-old forward.

Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles with United, expressed strong views about Rashford on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“I think Marcus has let a lot of people down really, with his attitude, and I think that’s what the manager is trying to say”, he said.

“You think of the young players coming through the team, think of (Alejandro) Garnacho, they’re looking up to people like Marcus now — he’s 27 years of age, and he’s clearly not training properly.

” I remember years ago when I told the manager (Alex Ferguson) I didn’t want to play in that Arsenal game… he said to me ‘ The worst thing you did is let your team-mates down’, and that really stuck with me because I wasn’t really thinking about that — and now I think Marcus Rashford, he’s doing exactly the same.

“OK, he’s not refusing to play, but in the way he’s behaving and the way he’s training, in a way he is saying I don’t want to be involved with these.

So I believe that letting your team-mates down in that dressing room should be forbidding, really. If he’s in and around that and young people are seeing that as an example, the sooner he’s gone the better. “

Rio Ferdinand, a former United defender, made similar strong remarks on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, saying that Rashford had “no way back” after Amorim’s comments.

Two days after being exempt from the squad for the game against Manchester City, Rashford declared in December that he was prepared for a “new challenge.”

Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan have been linked with a move for the player, who has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United, during the January transfer window.
