WAFCON 2024: Nigeria defeats Zambia 5-0 to reach the semi-finals

In the final round of the tournament, Zambia defeated Nigeria in a third-place match, but the Super Falcons coach claimed Friday’s victory was not retaliation.

We didn’t consider it to be a revenge mission for us.
Instead, the gaffer said, “We needed to win it to move on to the next round of the competition.”

“Yes, because we lost out to them in the third place match in the previous edition, and we have now won,” which is quite gratifying. We anticipated a win, though probably not the score line. And we had that in mind.

The scoreline may be flattering, but we still came out on top, and we knew we had the players with the necessary skills and that the players were already prepared.

Nigeria now has four matches to play without conceding a goal, which is a record for the tournament’s 13th semi-final appearance.

Additionally, it ensured that the Super Falcons won the championship’s 13th semi-final game.

Zambia defeated the Southern Africans 5-0 on Friday to reach the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 quarter-final at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.

The Falcons won the tournament’s semi-final with goals from Osinachi Ohale, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Oluwatosin Demehin, and Folashade Ijamilusi.

The Super Falcons needed a spark, and it did so right away when Osinachi crossed over to give the nine-time WAFCON champion a deserved lead.

The Zambian side’s attack continued as the match progressed, with Barbara Banda, the 2024 African Women’s Footballer of the Year, spearheading the charge.

However, this time in the 26th minute, Nigeria doubled their lead thanks to Okoronkwo, who hit a half-volley in the opposition’s perfect half-volley to beat Zambian stopper Ngambo Musole.

Chinwendu, who was unable to stop a challenge and perfectly slot the ball into the left-hand side of the goal post, scored Nigeria’s third goal in the 45th minute.

The Super Falcons jumped out to a 3-3 lead in the second half and resurrended their winning ways with sharp passes before Musole denied them.

However, the Super Falcons’ persistent pressure paid off in the 68th minute when Demehin fired a close-range goal home.

Asisat Oshoala and Christy Ucheibe were traded in for Okoronkwo and Halimatu by coach Justin Madugu.

After that action, Madugu’s side’s Nigerian side quickly found another goal and the result was a new one.

Ijamilusi ran in the near-post after the captain’s cross found him, giving Nigeria a five-goal lead in the 91st minute.

With the 2024 World Cup, Nigeria has now won four games without conceding a single goal thanks to Friday’s victory. Additionally, it provided a record-breaking 13th semi-final appearance for the Super Falcons.

Fraud Probe Opened Into Mbappe’s Payments To Police Officers

An investigation has been opened into potentially fraudulent payments made by Kylian Mbappe to five police officers assigned to protect the French national football team, the public prosecutor’s office told AFP on Thursday.

The probe comes after a tip-off from the French finance ministry’s anti-money laundering unit, which reported “unusual financial transactions” benefitting the five police officers.

“Investigations, which are by their very nature complex in the case of financial transactions, are underway in order to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed”, the public prosecutor’s office said.

French investigative weekly Le Canard Enchaine on Wednesday reported that the France national team captain’s money was used to “pay under the table for private services”, to the tune of 180, 300 euros ($209, 000).

The Real Madrid striker’s entourage issued a statement saying “everything was done in compliance with the rules”.

It added that Mbappe had “always chosen to donate in full his bonuses” for playing for France at international level.

“It’s what he did after the 2022 World Cup, with complete transparency”, the statement continued, saying the money went to charitable organisations and security personnel that accompanied the team.

Former Liverpool, Man Utd Star Ince Banned For Drink-Driving

Former Liverpool and Manchester United star Paul Ince has been banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £7, 085 ($9, 524) after a drink-driving offence.

Ince admitted driving his black Range Rover while over the limit on June 28 in Cheshire.

The ex-England captain had a reading of 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when he was stopped by police, Chester Magistrates court heard on Friday.

Nigel Jones, prosecuting, said: “On the day in question, the defendant was witnessed by an off-duty police officer driving a vehicle perceived to be swerving across the road”.

He said the 57-year-old’s car swerved across the central reservation, hitting bollards and causing two tyres to burst.

Frank Rogers, defending Ince, said: “My client finds himself today facing the huge impact of a ban, but he accepts he only has himself to blame for that.

” He misjudged the fact he believed at the time he would be under the limit. “

Rogers said Ince had been at Heswall Golf Club and had not eaten before having two drinks in the clubhouse.

” He felt fine to drive, of course, we now know that he shouldn’t have done, “Rogers said.

District Judge Jack McGarva told Ince:” The message has got to be if you’re going to drive, you don’t drink at all. “

Ince, who also played for Inter Milan and West Ham, earned 53 caps for England, winning two Premier League titles among a host of trophies during his six years as a United midfielder.

He moved into management after retiring, with his most recent spell in charge at Reading ending in 2023.
