United Nations says children make up 50 percent of gang members in Haiti

As gangs in Haiti continue to be roiling the Caribbean nation as a result of violence and political and economic instability, according to the UN, children now make up about half of the population.

As she and other officials pushed for more funding in Haiti, UNICEF’s (UNICEF) director, Catherine Russell, made the “alarming” statistics public on Thursday.

According to Russell, “children currently make up a shocking 50% of the armed groups active today.”

Children are being forced to play combat roles and engage in armed conflict. Others are being abused as domestic workers who use porters, lookouts, and couriers to carry weapons.

She continued, noting that there are more recruits in the pipeline. In comparison to&nbsp, the same period last year, child participation in gang activities, including recruitment, increased by 700% in the first three months of the year.

That was a result of Haiti’s increasing number of children who were the victims of human rights violations.

More than 2, 000 serious crimes against minors were reported by the UN in 2024, an increase of 500% from the previous year.

In Haiti, especially in the wake of Jovenel Moise’s assassination in 2021, criminal organizations and gangs have grown in size.

Nearly 1.3 million Haitians have fled their homes as a result of the violence, with half of them thought to be young people.

As much as 90% of the city is now under the control of gangs, according to a previous UN warning that the capital, Port-au-Prince, has been given “near-total control.”

As a result, roads are being blocked, public services are being cut, and food prices are skyrocketing.

Political corruption has long been cited as a motivator for the expansion of territorial control and power in Haitian gangs. However, gang violence has increased significantly because nearly 5, 000 people were killed in all between October and June alone.

The widespread bloodshed has been addressed by both the Haitian government and the international community.

UN Security Council approved a Kenya-led mission to assist Haiti’s police in October 2023, but those forces have struggled to gain traction and have been hampered by limited funding and resources.

Given the country’s disastrous history of colonial and military occupation, critics have also feared that foreign intervention might occur.

Dorothy Shea, the ambassador of the United States, stated at a UN Security Council meeting that Panama and her country would discuss a draft resolution to form a security force to combat gangs.

How the UN-backed security force’s current combination would be impacted.

However, the Haitian government has recently pressed for greater cooperation with private security companies, including Vectus Global, which is led by private military entrepreneur Erik Prince, who has links to US President Donald Trump.

In August, the UN reported that less than 10% of the Haitian crisis’s funding goal had been met.

Migrants and refugees fleeing Haiti’s upheaval have struggled to find safety in other nations despite the level of violence there.

Real Madrid to face Liverpool, PSG face Barcelona in Champions League draw

In the league phase of the current season’s league, champions Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona will square off against record-eighteen champions Real Madrid, who have already defeated them 15 times.

In theory, PSG’s league opponents will be matches against Athletic Bilbao and Newcastle United in England.

In a replay of their Super Cup victory two weeks ago, Tottenham, the Europa League champion, will also face PSG. Bayer Leverkusen, Atalanta, and Sporting Lisbon complete PSG’s eight-game schedule.

Real Madrid also received a challenging draw, which included a trip far east to Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty, which is located 6,420 kilometers (4, 000 miles) away from the Spanish capital.

Madrid faced Manchester City, whom it defeated in the knockout playoffs last year, and a return to Liverpool after defeating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield in the league phase last year. The pot of highest-ranked teams gave Madrid two English opponents.

In addition to its 2017 final victory, Madrid will face Juventus, two French rivals, Marseille and Monaco, where superstar forward Kylian Mbappe began his career.

Fans of Liverpool will welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold back from his Madrid return and make frequent trips to Inter Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt, Marseille, and Galatasaray’s vibrant stadiums.

Bayern Munich will face PSG, PSG, and Chelsea, the 2012 champion at home, in a rematch of the previous final, which it defeated in the 2020 final. Additionally, Bayern will travel to Cyprus to face Pafos.

North of the Arctic Circle, Manchester City will face Bodo/Glimt of Norway and former Manchester City fan Kevin De Bruyne’s new club Napoli.

Liverpool and Arsenal will host Inter Milan’s top two Premier League rivals last season, losing two of their final three games. Last season, Inter defeated Arsenal at the San Siro.

Club Brugge, Olympiakos, and Pafos will also be present at Kairat. To play at Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon, the team also has to travel four time zones west.

Juventus, Tottenham, and Monaco will also be playing against Bodo/Glimt.

Another long-haul journey east to Baku for Chelsea, Eintracht, Ajax, and Copenhagen is via Qarabag in Azerbaijan.

36 teams are ranked in a single-standings table and play eight different opponents in the second season of the league phase format, which runs until January 1.

Bodo/Glimt, Kairat Almaty, Pafos, and Belgian champion Union Saint-Gilloise are the only newcomers to the Champions League’s main competition.

Bodo and Almaty games have the potential to be the visiting teams’ longest-ever home games, and they also have the coldest winter games ever. Bodo plays on a heated artificial turf field.

Each team received two opponents from each of the four seeding pots in a computerized drawing. Teams are ranked based on their UEFA competition ranking over the course of five seasons.

Former World Cup winner Kaka pressed the button to reveal the opponents’ names while retired great Zlatan Ibrahimovic selected each team from its draw.

The final league matchday is January 28 and the games begin on September 16. All 36 teams play 18 games that start at once on that same Wednesday evening.

The final eight teams advance to the March 16th round. Eight knockout playoffs featuring teams ranked ninth through 24 will be held in their place in February. The top 12 teams have been eliminated.

Millions of children at risk across Africa as aid cuts impact food supplies

As a result of the drop in international aid, millions of children in four African nations are at risk of developing malnutrition in the next three months, according to Save the Children.

According to Save the Children, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan were all expected to run out of the so-called “ready-to-use therapeutic food” (RUTF), a nutritional paste that has a long shelf life and doesn’t require refrigeration.

Without access to medical care and nutrition assistance, the humanitarian organization predicted that 3.5 million children under the age of five who are suffering from severe acute malnutrition will be in danger alone in Nigeria.

Imagine having a severely malnourished child as a parent, said Yvonne Arunga, Save the Children’s regional director for East and Southern Africa.

Imagine that therapeutic food is the only thing that can save your child from the brink of death, and that food was once out of stock.

The UN’s humanitarian office described the UN’s humanitarian office as “the deepest funding cuts ever to hit the international humanitarian sector” just months after the organization made extensive programme cuts in June.

At the time, UN aid chief Tom Fletcher said, “We have been forced into a triage of human survival.”

“The results are heartbreaking, and the math is cruel. We will save as many lives as we can with the resources we have because too many people won’t receive the support they need.

Leading international donors, particularly the United States, have significantly reduced foreign aid, causing widespread concern that developing nations around the world will lose critical aid, including food and healthcare.

Congress passed a bill that reduced the nation’s foreign aid expenditures by about $8 billion in July as part of US President Donald Trump’s effort to reduce federal spending.

At least 652 malnourished children in northern Nigeria died in the first half of 2025 as a result of a lack of timely care, according to a report from Doctors Without Borders (also known as MSF).

According to Ahmed Aldikhari, MSF’s country representative in Nigeria, “We are currently witnessing massive budget cuts, especially from the United States, the United Kingdom, and other European countries,” which are having a real impact on the treatment of malnourished children.

One of its clinics in northwest Kenya, according to Save the Children, has been forced to use other facilities to provide food to malnourished children.

Sister Winnie, the facility’s director, said, “And if the children are not supported, I know we will lose them very soon.”

According to Save the Children, 105, 000 RUTF cartons will be required throughout Kenya by the end of the year, but only 79, 000 have been secured so far, with supplies anticipated to run out in October.

In addition to more than 2.3 million severely malnourished children this year, the group claimed that overall, nutrition funding shortages could prevent treatment for 15.6 million people in 18 different nations around the world.

US envoy says calling Lebanon reporters ‘animalistic’ was ‘inappropriate’

Days after his comments sparked outrage in the Middle East, American diplomat Tom Barrack regrets calling Lebanese journalists “animalistic.”

Barrack reaffirmed his call for Lebanese reporters to be “civilized” in a Thursday interview with Mario Nawfal, a social media personality.

He did acknowledge that his remarks to the reporters who yelled questions after his meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun earlier this week should have been more “tolerant.”

I didn’t use the word “animalist” in a derogatory way when I was writing. Simply put, I want to know: Can we relax? Can we exhibit kindness and tolerance? As the ambassador to Turkiye and special envoy for Syria and Lebanon, Barrack urged people to “be civilized”.

“But when the media is just doing their job,” the statement was inappropriate.

After meeting with Aoun at the presidential palace close to Beirut, Barrack, who is of Lebanese descent, addressed the remarks he made on Tuesday.

He was confronted by reporters in the briefing room, where he was reportedly irritated by a barrage of questions.

Barrack asked that you “please be quiet for a moment.”

“And I want to tell you something: We’re gone as soon as this starts to become chaotic, like animalistic.” You want to know what’s going on, then. Because of the regional situation, act civilized, kind, and tolerant.

Some critics claim that Barrack’s remarks best describe Washington’s subdued attitude toward the region.

Hezbollah being disarmed

Before or after diplomatic meetings, reporters frequently shout questions at officials. The act is referred to as a journalistic “spray” in the US.

In an effort to secure a deal that would force Israel to fully withdraw from the country and stop its daily attacks, Barrack has repeatedly traveled to Lebanon as part of a campaign.

The Lebanese government passed a resolution last month tasked the army with developing a strategy to end Hezbollah’s weapons supply by the year’s end.

Hezbollah criticized the decision, saying that it would treat the resolution as though it didn’t exist.

Israel, which receives billions of dollars in US aid, has continued to bomb Lebanon daily, effectively preventing south Lebanon’s citizens from returning to their border towns, many of which have been destroyed by the bombings.

Lebanon claims sovereignty over the disputed Shebaa Farms region, which the Israeli military still occupies, along with five other areas in Lebanese territory.

Despite Israeli violations, Hezbollah, which was devastated by the conflict from last year that left its top political and military leaders dead, has largely adhered to the ceasefire agreement.

However, it has rejected calls for disarmament, arguing that Lebanon’s weapons shield Israel’s expansionist objectives. The group has accused the Lebanese government of adhering to Israeli and US laws.

Hezbollah asserts that southern Lebanon cannot be defended by the Lebanese military alone.

However, the Lebanese government has argued that the only entity with weapons in the country must be the state, with the government insisting that only the Lebanese Armed Forces can protect all of its citizens.

Lebanon, which has endured years of suffering from security and economic crises, is at risk of internal conflict due to the impasse.

What was Hezbollah’s response?

Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc member Ibrahim Moussawi earlier this week criticized Barrack’s remarks, calling them “foolishness and arrogance” of the US approach to Lebanon.

According to Moussawi, “This envoy embodies the reality of the United States of America and the essence of the barbaric, aggressive philosophy upon which it was founded.”

He also criticized the Lebanese government for failing to take a strong stance against Barrack, including by calling the US ambassador to Beirut.

In response to protests over his statements, Barack had already cut short a trip to south Lebanon, where Hezbollah enjoys widespread support.

Barrack has also caused controversy in Lebanon before, though this was not the first time.

He suggested that Lebanon might join greater Syria, underlining the dangers the nation is facing.

Lebanon is referred to as our beach resort by Syrians. Therefore, we must proceed. And I am aware of how irate the Lebanese are. He claimed, “I find it irritable.

A Western official’s rare comment about the viability of Lebanon as a nation was made in response to the assertion.

In a later statement, Barack claimed that the US’s position is to support Syria and Lebanon as two “equal and sovereign” neighbors.

Israel launches latest attacks against Houthis in Yemen’s Sanaa

As a result of Israel’s ongoing conflict with Gaza, the Israeli military has attacked Sanaa, the Yemeni capital.

In a statement, the Israeli military said its forces struck a Houthi “terrorist regime military target in the area of Sanaa” on Thursday. No casualties were immediately reported.

Mount Attan, a prominent hill located southwest of Sanaa, was damaged, according to images obtained by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking unit. “Israeli aggression on the capital Sanaa,” according to a post from Al Masirah TV, which is affiliated with Al Masirah TV.

The defense minister and chief of staff were among the members of the Houthi organization, according to Houthi official Nasr al-Din Amer, who refuted reports in Israeli media that the strike had targeted the organization’s leaders.

He wrote on X that “because of their supportive stance toward Gaza, the Yemeni people are being targeted for civilian objects and the entire population.”

In order to show its support for Palestinians in Gaza, Israel has repeatedly attacked Houthi positions in recent months. The group has launched attacks on Israel and Western vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

It has asserted on numerous occasions that Houthi’s military support operations in Yemen will not be stopped by Israeli attacks on Yemen.

repeated Sanaa attacks

Health officials reported that the attack on Thursday came after Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa left ten people dead and more than 90 wounded.

The Israeli military claimed that Houthi militants targeted the presidential palace on Sunday.

Houthi officials refuted the claims, saying that Israel had targeted “civilians and civilian objects” instead. Israel was charged with “war crimes,” according to the Ministry of Public Health and Population in a statement.

Israel claimed it had intercepted a missile attack launched by the Houthis on Wednesday.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook sues Trump for his attempt to fire her

The lawsuit brought by federal reserve governor Lisa Cook alleges that the president has no authority to appoint her successor. This could set off a legal battle between the president and the central bank.

Three days after Trump released a letter&nbsp in which Cook was fired from her job, the lawsuit was filed on Thursday.

Cook contends that Trump’s attempt to remove her from her position violated federal law. Presidents may only remove a Federal Reserve governor “for cause,” as defined by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, with high standards for serious misconduct or dereliction of duty.

The Federal Reserve is regarded as independent from political subdivisions like the presidency or Congress because it is the nation’s central banking system. That theoretically enables it to determine monetary policy without using political maneuvers.

However, worries about whether Trump will allow the Fed to maintain its independence from the White House may have a negative impact on the global economy. After Trump first announced that he would remove Cook, the US dollar stumbled against other major currencies.

Former National Economic Council deputy director Sameera Fazili told Al Jazeera that “President Trump’s attempt to fire Dr. Lisa Cook is adding uncertainty and chaos to the US economy.”

According to Fazili, who previously worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, disruptions at the central bank would have a negative effect on US businesses.

Stable and predictable laws are necessary for the operation of an economy. She continued, “I applaud Dr. Cook for standing up and fighting for the rule of law,” noting that that is how you can get investors’ trust and raise money for your businesses.

A conservative majority has at least tentatively permitted Trump to fire officials from other agencies, so Cook’s lawsuit is likely headed to the Supreme Court.

However, the court recently indicated that a limited number of exceptions might apply to the Federal Reserve.

The Supreme Court argued in its May decision in Trump v. Wilcox that Federal Reserve governors are distinct from other federal employees because the bank “is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks of the United States.”

allegations of mortgages

Despite this, Trump, a Republican president, has argued that Cook should be fired from her position.

He charged Cook of mortgage fraud in 2021, one year before she became the head of the Federal Reserve, in his letter from August 25.

The members of the Federal Reserve tasked with setting policy and overseeing it must be able to have complete confidence in their honesty, he wrote.

They cannot and do not have such confidence in your integrity because of your deceitful and potentially criminal behavior in a financial situation.

The Federal Reserve Act does not specify what “for cause” means or establish any removal standards or procedures.

Trump has asserted that Cook’s actions constitute “gross negligence,” despite the fact that she has refuted the claims.

No president has ever removed a member from the Federal Reserve Board, and the legal framework for such removals has never been put to the test in court.

Before the lawsuit was filed, a Federal Reserve spokesperson stated on Tuesday that the bank would abide by any court order.

Former Democratic President Joe Biden appointed Cook to the Federal Reserve in 2022, making her the first Black woman to hold office.

William Pulte, a Trump appointee who is the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, first raised concerns about Cook’s mortgages in August.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi was given the opportunity to investigate Pulte.

When she was an academic studying and teaching economics, Cook took out the mortgages in Georgia and Michigan in 2021.

Three mortgages, two of which Cook held as personal residences, are listed on an official financial disclosure form for 2024. Mortgages on investment properties, which are viewed by banks as riskier, have lower interest rates than loans for primary residences.

Some experts have questioned whether Cook’s appointment to the Federal Reserve would have been a sufficient motivating factor. After all, Cook’s mortgages were already on the Senate’s 2022 vetted and confirmed records.

Trump has made numerous allegations of mortgage fraud against alleged political foes, including Democratic Senator Adam Schiff of California and New York Attorney General Letitia James, both of whom are Democrats.

Schiff and James have both refuted accusations of misconduct.

attempting to influence the Federal Reserve

For her part, Cook asserted earlier this week in a statement that “Trump has no authority” to revoke her from her job and that “no causes exist under the law.”

Trump’s attorneys have also claimed that the demands don’t have a proper legal foundation, proper process, or legal authority.

Criticism has been leveled at Trump by his supporters as he seeks to have broad powers beyond the presidency, across all branches of government, since he ran for a second term in January.

Despite federal regulations that protect their employment, he has attempted to remove inspectors general and the heads of independent agencies he thought were hostile to his policies.

The president must state clearly why he or she should resign from office. Those causes include inefficiency, malfeasance, and neglect of duty.

The Federal Reserve Act’s definitions of those causes could serve as a guide for courts in deciding whether or not Trump can fire Cook.

Cook’s attorneys argued in the lawsuit on Thursday that nothing she had done would constitute a “cause.”

Even if the President’s claims were accurate, which they are not, neither the type of offense the President cited nor the lack of evidence against Governor Cook would qualify as “cause” for expulsion, they wrote.

Even if a Federal Reserve Governor had smoking gun evidence while she jaywalked in college, “the President would not have ‘ cause’ to remove him.”

The president attempted to resign from her position without giving any notice, according to the lawsuit.

Trump has faced legal action in addition to the Trump v. Wilcox case.

Gwynne Wilcox, the first Black woman to serve on the board that hears labor disputes between the private sector, was the subject of that case.

Trump would be able to name his fourth pick for the bank’s seven-member board with Cook’s departure from the Federal Reserve, though.

Jerome Powell, the president’s chair, has been berated repeatedly by the president for allegedly handling a multibillion-dollar renovation project poorly and for not lowering interest rates.

Trump has since resisted making those statements even though he has previously threatened to remove Powell before his term expires in May.
