Sudan Doctors Network accuses RSF of ‘war crimes’ after 31 killed

According to the Sudan Doctors Network, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have executed at least 31 people, including children, in Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city.

According to the organization, the city’s Al-Salha neighborhood’s victims included children, making the killings “the largest documented mass killing in the region.”

Local doctors claimed that the victims had ties to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and that the paramilitary group had made an accusation against them.

In the Al-Salha neighborhood, activists posted videos on social media showing RSF uniformed men shooting at a group of people.

The RSF’s bloodshed was also referred to as “a crime against humanity” and “a war crime” by the doctor’s network.

It urged the international community to immediately intervene to save the remaining civilians by establishing safe passageways to allow them to leave Al-Salha.

The rebel group did not respond to the report right away.

According to a report from Khartoum, Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reported that the Barra brigade, which has been fighting alongside the army or SAF, was the source of the graphic video that started appearing on social media early on Sunday morning.

The Sudanese army has been conducting offensives to regain control of the RSF in southwest and western Omdurman, where the RSF also has bases, and she said the RSF is still fighting in southwestern Omdurman.

A statement from the SAF and the government has not yet been made.

In a brutal civil war that left countless people dead and one of the worst humanitarian crises ever, the RSF has been fighting Sudanese army forces for control of the nation since April 15, 2023.

According to the UN and local authorities, more than 20 000 people have died so far, and 15 million have been displaced.

Liverpool ‘truly deserve’ to be Premier League champions, van Dijk says

After beating Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 to claim their 20th top-flight title in front of a roaring Anfield, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk insists the club would never take for granted if it won the Premier League title.

With only four games left in the season, Liverpool won the Premier League title for the second time in the history of the competition, giving Arne Slot’s side an unassailable 15-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.

It’s unique, and we don’t take it for granted, she said. As the players circled the stadium in a lap of honor, van Dijk described it as “amazing what today was”.

“There are a lot of emotions before the game and throughout the week.” We accomplished what we were promised, and England is a proud nation.

The most stunning club in the world is “… We should get this, in my opinion. Let’s have fun and let it sink in for a few weeks.

Five years ago, Liverpool won the Premier League title as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the fans were prohibited from entering the stadium to celebrate their first league title in 30 years.

The fans sang the club’s anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone, while the players were crowded at Anfield this time, though.

Yes, I was desperate for them to be here, van Dijk said, “I was desperate for them to be here,” of course, for all the fans there, as well as for the fans here,” of course.

That’s still a good thing because we won two Premier League titles in five years.

With the title in their hands, Liverpool also defeated Spurs 3-3 in the reverse fixture in December, and manager Jose Slot declared they could not let their fans down as a sea of red welcomed the team bus at Anfield.

We knew we couldn’t lose this game, they said. Everyone on the bus remarked, “There’s no way we’re going to lose this game,” Slot, who won the title at Liverpool for the first time in his career.

They always discover a winning strategy. [I’m] incredibly proud of the players and the people in this place, including the staff members and the sport directors. A lot of applause should be given to them.

Pope Francis laid to rest in Rome after funeral attended by thousands

Rome, Italy – On Saturday morning as Pope Francis’ funeral procession broke out in the Vatican City, about 250 000 people in the city of Vatican City sat in a hushed silence.

The city-state’s loudspeakers echoed the church choir. In honor of him, some bowed their heads. In a silent prayer, others clasped their hands.

The pope’s coffin was removed from St. Peter’s Basilica shortly after 10 am (08:00 GMT). The majority of the crowd turned to the large screens scattered around St. Peter’s Square, which were too far away to see.

The gentle sound of a prayer song softened the tense morning into a moment of shared peace, prompting police officers, stewards, and military personnel to finally relax after directing crowds through cordoned-off streets since dawn.

Numerous groups of teenagers who had traveled to Rome as part of the Jubilee of Adolescents, a major Catholic celebration held every 25 years, sat down on the cobblestones of Via della Conciliazione, which leads up the piazza, as the readings began in various languages.

As they sought protection from the warm midday sun, others scurried to the edge of the street.

One voice of prayer and love

Pauline Mille, a French doctoral student who had met her parents early in the morning, described the ceremony as moving and said it was “nice to hear people singing in harmony and spending time together” as they honored the pope’s legacy.

Due to Francis’ passing on Monday, Elie Dib, a Lebanese American, traveled to Rome with his wife and young son.

Dib expressed his sadness at being a part of the prayer and the funeral service today to pray for his soul and was moved by the expressions of “love and prayer” from people of all nationalities.

A group of teenagers from Mexico who were holding hands on each other’s shoulders knelt and raised their heads in the center of the square.

As the ceremony came to an end, elderly people were greeted by Vatican stewards who distributed free water.

Francis’s burial was carried by the popemobile that was traveling from the city-state to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, which is a few kilometers away in the city.

Love messages that “fell a great weight” were still sent.

Tens of thousands of mourners made the roughly one-hour-long walk by foot to the pope’s final resting place as the roughly 50 heads of state, 12 reigning monarchs, and other VIP guests were ushered out of private exits in a section next to St. Peter’s Basilica.

Fiorello Maffei, 58, moved to Italy for the now-deferred canonization of Carlo, a Londoner himself born to Italian parents who passed away from leukaemia at the age of 15. According to Maffei, Francis’s funeral was “very touching” and full of “very meaningful” messages of love.

He claimed that this epitomized Francis, who kept his messages simple when communicating with people. He also expressed his satisfaction that world leaders like Donald Trump had to take note of these messages.

Two Benin priests who were there to mourn the funeral with South African clergy said they were hopeful and appreciative of the legacy Francis has left behind.

They claimed that Francis had preached a message of peace and inclusion and had welcomed immigrants and refugees with an “open heart” as they watched the pope’s coffin being driven through Rome on a large TV screen next to the Tiber’s banks.

Maffei said Francis would have enjoyed seeing Largo Magnanapoli’s uphill section of the city walk through Rome.

It’s challenging to walk like this. He would have desired that his time for reflection and reflection be as it were, Maffei said.

The pope, who visited the Basilica of Saint Mary Major more than 100 times during his 12-year papacy, began to dwindle as no formal ceremony or special occasion was planned for his burial.

The pontiff’s tomb was made accessible to the public on Sunday.

Liverpool net record-equalling 20th Premier League title by thrashing Spurs

On a fateful day at Anfield, Liverpool came back from a goal down to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 to win the Premier League title in style.

With only four games left, Liverpool were rocked in the 12th minute when Dominic Solanke headed Tottenham in front, leaving them with a point in the 20th English championship.

Before halftime, Liverpool responded with a Luis Diaz tap-in, an Alexis Mac Allister thunderbolt, and a Cody Gakpo shot. The title party was only briefly silenced.

Mohamed Salah scored a low shot past Guglielmo Vicario in the 63rd minute to end a six-game scoring drought and take a selfie with a fan to celebrate his 28th league goal of the year.

Destiny Udogie’s goal saw Tottenham lose 19 Premier League games this season, before scoring an own goal to cap a miserable afternoon.

Liverpool now has 82 points from 34 games, with Arsenal trailing with 67, which is now on par with Manchester United’s record for English titles.

Even though it was a formality before kickoff on Sunday, there was still the matter of Liverpool making sure the cake was iced in front of their own adoring supporters. Dutchman Arne Slot is only the fifth manager to have won the Premier League title in his debut season in English soccer.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an anti-climactic finale inside a deserted stadium five years ago when Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool put a 30-year wait for a 19th title on hold.

As the fans listened to their choir book of club anthems on Sunday, they more than made up for it.

Tottenham, who were 16th-placed in the Europa League semifinal on Thursday, made eight changes to their starting lineup with one eye before finally making a sacrifice when Solanke, a former Liverpool player, fired in James Maddison’s corner.

However, Liverpool only remained behind for four minutes.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s low cross was tapped in by Diaz for his 100th Premier League game, which was overturned following a VAR check, giving relief to everyone.

Eight minutes later, Mac Allister, one of the real unsung heroes in Liverpool’s midfield engine room, scored a special goal to give the game a first-half lead.

Tottenham attempted to play from the back, but the Argentine World Cup winner thumped a left-footed shot high past Vicario as he seized the ball.

The hosts started to riot as Gakpo slammed in his side’s third goal after 34 minutes as the visitors were now fully compliant with their role as Liverpool’s parade props.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar to settle Syria’s outstanding debt to World Bank

In the most recent effort to reverse the economic fortunes of a country that has been plagued by civil war, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have announced that they will pay roughly $15 million in debt to the World Bank.

Since President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in December, both Gulf countries have been instrumental in promoting diplomatic relations with Syria’s new interim government.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Qatar’s finance ministries jointly commit to paying roughly $15 million in outstanding arrears to the World Bank Group, according to a statement released on Sunday.

The statement was made just days after the first time in more than 20 years that Syria’s central bank governor and finance minister had attended the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

When the Syrian civil war broke out, operations at the World Bank had been suspended. It will be able to resume receiving bank technical assistance after its debt has been settled.

After being suspended for more than 14 years, the Saudi statement stated that “this commitment will allow the World Bank Group to resume support and operations in Syria.”

“It will also allow Syria to receive immediate financial support for the development of crucial sectors.”

Nearly 14 years of a ruinous civil war, which started with a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests during the Arab Spring in 2011, has destroyed a large portion of Syria’s infrastructure.

Syria’s new government has attempted to reestablish its diplomatic ties, including with international financial institutions, following Al-Assad’s ouster in a lightning attack by Islamist-led rebels in December.

The wealthy Gulf Arab states are a key player in funding Syria’s government’s reconstruction and revitalizing its economy.

The interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, wants to leave the corrupt system that presided over the al-Assad family’s control of key industries and gave al-Assad loyalists exclusive access to government contracts.

China’s Huawei develops new AI chip to compete with US’s Nvidia: Report

According to the Wall Street Journal, China’s Huawei Technologies plans to test its most recent and potent artificial intelligence (AI) processor in order to take the place of some of the company’s higher-end products, including those from US chip company Nvidia.

According to people with knowledge of the situation, Huawei has spoken with some Chinese tech companies to try to determine the Ascend 910D’s technical viability, according to a report from the US newspaper on Sunday.

The Chinese company anticipates receiving the first batch of samples from the processor’s first batch as early as late May because the most recent iteration of its Ascend AI processors will be more powerful than the H100, according to the report. 910B and 910C were the previous names for the system.

The chip is still in its early stages of development, according to the interviewees, and it will be subject to a number of tests to assess its performance before being used by the public.

Huawei’s advanced 910C artificial intelligence chip will be shipped to Chinese customers in large numbers as early as next month, according to a report from Reuters news agency.

Huawei and its Chinese competitors have struggled for years to create top-notch chips that could compete with Nvidia’s products for training models, a process that involves feeding data to algorithms to aid in learning to make informed decisions.

In an effort to slow down China’s technological advancement, especially advancements for its military, Nvidia has banned China from its most cutting-edge AI products, including its flagship B200 chip.

Before the H100 chip even went on sale in the US, US authorities halted its sale in 2022.

Huawei has managed to survive despite the US’s dominance in the technology sector and its attempts to stop Chinese development. As a crucial component of Beijing’s effort to establish a self-sufficient semiconductor industry, the Shenzhen-based company has created some of the country’s most promising alternatives to Nvidia’s AI chips.

Huawei released the premium Mate 60 smartphone in 2023, demonstrating its resilience against US restrictions despite being on a US trade blacklist for nearly six years. The US government was shocked when Gina Raimondo, then-Commerce Secretary, saw the phone and installed it during her visit to Beijing, which was powered by a domestic processor.
