Arsenal’s young talent stealing the show on tour

With the signing of six new players, including striker Viktor Gyokeres, to boost Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League, Mikel Arteta has had a busy summer.

However, one of the two 15-year-old academy players on their pre-season tour of Asia has caught the attention.

The squad’s youngest members are Marli Salmon and Max Dowman.

And attacking midfielder Dowman has shown in friendlies against AC Milan and Newcastle exactly why his potential is so high.

Dowman was a member of the senior squad that traveled to Dubai in January for their winter training camp despite having trained with the first team when he was 14 first.

The England youth international was even mentioned at the time about being called up to the side as a result of a medical crisis with key forwards Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus all having different injury issues.

In both pre-season friendlies, Saka was replaced by Dowman. While he showed some skill in the AC Milan game, his performance against Newcastle demonstrated why he has been touted for a Premier League season debut.

One of the standout moments of the game was a delightful dribble into the area that ended with Joelinton fouling Dowman for a penalty that earned Arsenal a 3-2 victory.

When asked about the youngster’s performance against Newcastle, Arteta responded, “It is special.”

What he did today against this team is undoubtedly not something a 15-year-old would see coming.

“Let them shine and have the right mindset.”

Martin Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal, says he will be able to share my experience with Dowman and the England Under-16 international defender Salmon because he left Real Madrid at the age of 16 after being courted by many of Europe’s elite clubs.

The Norwegian, 26, said, “I think the entire squad is really good at helping the young players.” You can see that the quality is obvious because I simply try to share my experience, point them in the right direction, and help them maintain the right mindset.

“Just trying to help them develop the right mindset, feel good about the team, and kind of let them shine and do what they are supposed to do.”

You can see the quality of their work on the tour, which they have been outstanding. In the future, it will be exciting to watch.

When Dowman scored in the win over the Czech Republic, Dowman became the youngest scorer in the competition and played for England’s Under-17s at the Euros over the summer.

He is three years older than his peers when he plays for Arsenal. In 23 games last year, he scored 19 goals and gave five assists, with 17 of those attacking returns coming in the under-18 Premier League South’s final seven games (14 goals, three assists).

Ex-NBA player Arenas arrested over illegal poker ring

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has been arrested and charged with allegedly running an illegal, high-stakes poker ring out of his home in the Los Angeles area.

Mr Arenas, 43, is charged along with five other defendants, including one Israeli man who prosecutors claim is a “suspected organized crime figure”.

Prosecutors have charged him with three federal crimes, including operating an illegal gambling business and making false statements to investigators.

Prosecutors used his nickname, “Agent Zero” which he acquired during his time as an All-Star point guard – in charging documents unsealed on Wednesday.

According to the indictment, between September 2021 to July 2022 Mr Arenas rented out his mansion in Encino to be used for illegal poker games.

Prosecutors say he directed his co-defendants to prepare the home for games, and to collect a “rake” – money taken from each pot which goes to the organisers.

Co-defendant Yevgeni Gershman, who officials label a “suspected organized crime figure from Israel”, was allegedly responsible for hiring young women to “serve drinks, provide massages and offer companionship” to players, in exchange for tips.

In return, the women were charged a “tax”, prosecutors say. Chefs, valets, and armed security guards were also allegedly hired by the defendants.

Mr Gershman is also facing separate charges of immigration and marriage fraud.

They are charged alongside Evgenni Tourevski, 48, Allan Austria, 52, Yarin Cohen, 27, and Ievgen Krachun, 43.

Mr Arenas made the NBA All-Star team three times, and played 11 seasons in the league. Throughout his career he played for the Golden State Warriors, Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies. More recently, he has hosted a podcast, Gil’s Arena, where he and other former players discuss basketball.

The indictment adds that Mr Arenas falsely claimed to know nothing about gambling in his home, and filed a petition to get the money back that was seized by federal agents during a raid on 20 July, 2022.

His trial is scheduled for 23 September. If convicted of all three charges, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Under California law, a poker match becomes illegal if someone running the game takes a house cut, or fee.

This is not his first time facing legal issues. In January 2010, he was charged with illegal gun possession after drawing a firearm during a card game in the Washington DC Wizards locker room.

Valiant but vulnerable – how Rangers escaped heat of Athens with hope

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

Russell Martin’s side finally got what they wanted on a blisteringly hot Athens night when Rangers had at times been desperately valiant and desperately vulnerable.

Panathinaikos was eliminated from the Champions League second round qualifier when the draw appeared to be the riskiest of the first step in the league phase, and Rangers drew their luck from Glasgow to Greece.

The character displayed by a team in the early stages of the new head coach’s overhaul was admired as they drew 1-1 on the night and advanced 3-1 on aggregate, despite some Greek wastefulness and Jack Butland heroics being to blame for their passage to the next round.

While other aspects of their game would have been troubling, Martin had instructed his players to be resilient in the face of the Panathinaikos onslaught.

“We will improve,” After the game, Martin predicted that the group would benefit greatly from this. His current task is to improve the quality of the character his team has demonstrated in these two testing encounters.

Russell Martin thrives on the training ground, according to former Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell, who spoke on BBC Sportsound.

“The better they will get, the longer he has with his players.

That’s how a team is built, according to the saying.

Djeidi Gassama’s second stunning and crucial goal in as many games will make headlines.

The hosts had only jumped out to the front on the night when VAR realized Filip Duricic was blocking Butland. There was still time to overhaul Rangers’ shrinking aggregate lead, and the dam had finally been burst.

However, Gassama appeared three minutes after starting that game and seven minutes later to slash a vicious shot into the post to halt the hosts’ momentum.

Few, though, could have captured the spirit of the Rangers team more than John Souttar, who stood tall in the defense when the Greeks were threatening to split the team.

According to Sudtar, “That’s how you build a team, surviving those difficult moments,”

It demonstrates our mentality, it says. There will be times when things won’t go our way. We can thank Butland because he was once more outstanding.

The play seems to be not really working, according to the statement.

The two legs’ recurring theme was that the ball wasn’t looked after. Rangers players frequently gave up possession cheaply in the first two legs of both legs.

Although they were fortunate not to face Panathinaikos, such sloppiness must be eliminated as they advance through the qualifying rounds and, as they hope, the Champions League league phase.

Former Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands on Sportsound: “If Gassama hadn’t scored then, I think Rangers could have potentially conceded the game because they were already dominating the entire area at that time.”

“Rangers don’t really have time,” he says. Right now, the play seems to be lagging behind. Before the following round, that needs to be cleaned up.

Rangers will face Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the following round. Another challenging test that Martin’s side must take better of.

If Rangers play like they’ve done over the two ties, they’re going to make it difficult for themselves, said former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday, who said “you would anticipate them to be weaker opponents than Panathinaikos.”

“Rangers are still developing, and their performance will undoubtedly improve.”

Norrie out of Canadian Open as he loses to Vukic

After suffering a surprise second-round defeat by world no. 99 Aleksandar Vukic, British number two Cameron Norrie is withdrawn from the Canadian Open.

The 29-year-old suffered a 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 loss to the Australian.

Norrie last won a singles title in 2023, reaching the finals of the Wimbledon tournament in early July, ranking him 39th.

While he won some good matches on the grass court this year, he has yet to carry that momentum onto the hard courts, quickly falling to 3-0 in the first set against Vukic, 29.

Norrie battled it out for the match’s goal, despite having his blood pressure checked midway through the second set.

However, he ultimately lost against his unseeded opponent because he failed to make any of his three break points in the rain-interrupted deciding set.

Iga Swiatek, the world’s no. 3, defeated Chinese qualifier Guo Hanyu six times in her first match to claim a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the women’s event in Montreal.

Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion, defeated Liudmila Samsonova, 6-1, 6-6, 8-6, 6-3, to earn her first victory in a row.

The 27-year-old rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the tie-break after surviving break points in the tenth game of the second set.

Osaka, the world number 49, defeated Karolina Muchova for the first time at the Australian Open in January to win the title.

Osaka broke Samsonova twice in the decisive set to win the match, working with Tomasz Wiktorowski after revealing on Monday that she had split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

After defeating Mexico’s Renata Zarazua 6-2, 4-6, and 6-2, she will face Jelena Ostapenko in the third round.

Emma Raducanu, the reigning world no. 1, defeated Peyton Stearns in straight sets to advance to the third round of the women’s draw.

Belinda Bencic, a Swiss national, defeated former Wimbledon champion Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 3 6-4 in their final competitive match before retiring.

The 31-year-old made the announcement in July that her final tournament would be the Montreal Open, held in her hometown.

When I was a young child, Bouchard said, “I remember sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I would one day play on this court.”

It feels like a complete circle for me to end my career here because I grew up playing on these courts and courts all around Montreal and nearby.

Brady queries Rooney’s ‘work ethic’ at Birmingham

Images courtesy of Getty

During Wayne Rooney’s time as Birmingham City manager, where Brady is a minority owner, NFL legend Tom Brady has questioned Wayne Rooney’s attitude.

In a new Amazon Prime documentary series that will debut on Friday, Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, says, “I’m a little worried about our head coach’s work ethic,” before adding, “I don’t have great instincts on that.

Following a visit to the club’s training facility in November 2023, Brady made his comments about Rooney. He also refers to Blues players as “lazy and entitled” in the series.

The former quarterback and his manager, Rooney, appear awkward on camera.

The former Manchester United and Everton striker tells his employer about some of the club’s cultural issues in one exchange.

Because we’ve all passed a ball, kicked the ball, and ran, Rooney claims, but it’s a focus that lasts 90 minutes. “They’re playing in the Championship, not the Premier League,” he says.

Brady is filmed watching a training session during the subsequent scenes, saying, “We have a long way to go.”

In August 2023, the retired quarterback, who is regarded as the best player in NFL history, became a minority owner of the organization following Knighthead Capital Management LLC’s (now owned by Tom Wagner) takeover of the same company last month.

After working with seven managers in ten months, the club was relegated to League One in its first year.

The Blues were ranked sixth in the Championship two months after Brady arrived in 2023 when John Eustace was controversiously replaced as manager.

Rooney only lasted 83 days in charge of St Andrew’s, the club then dropping to 20th in the table.

Fans of the Blues speculated during the series that the ownership wanted to “put a load of eyes on Birmingham City” by claiming that the appointment had been motivated by a desire to hire “one of the most recognisable English footballers of the last generation.”

What makes Wayne a good manager of Birmingham City, Collins asks? Nothing”.

Brady also considers the owners’ disastrous first season in charge.

He said, “You guys have time, listen, don’t go in there and make these big, sweeping changes,” according to the good advice I received.

Relegated players Brady: “lazy and entitled”

Birmingham dropped out of English football’s top two tiers for only the third time in their history as a result of their championship demise at the end of 2023-24.

Brady blames the players for the errors he makes throughout the series.

The players are actually the ones who are being affected, he says, “because we’ve already changed the coach.”

They were entitled, and when you’re lazy and entitled, you don’t have much of a chance to succeed.

There will be a lot of people leaving this summer, according to the saying, “We have to change all the people that are associated with losing.”

The club made an unprecedented $30 million in transfers during the summer, making it the highest transfer budget in League One.

Brady struggles to locate the Blues’ training facility.

Brady’s manager Ben Rawitz makes fun of the NFL legend trying to locate the Elite Performance and Innovation Centre on a map while traveling to Birmingham’s training facility during one scene.

Rapwitz later compared the facilities to a “high school,” saying, “That’s the owner right there, he doesn’t know where his training facility is.

Wagner’s ambition is “larger” than Wrexham’s.

The series makes comparisons to rival Championship club Wrexham, who have won three straight titles since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took control of the Welsh club for a fee in February 2021.

Wagner refutes the notion that the two clubs belong to the same class.

He claims that they did a fantastic job of bringing attention to a small club.

From our perspective, the club we have is a bit smaller than what we currently have because it’s already a very large club. More ambitious goals are being put forth for us in relation to what we’ll construct than Wrexham’s plans.
