Sabalenka powers past Paolini to reach Miami final

Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s number one, defeated Jasmine Paolini, of Italy, to reach the Miami Open final.

The 26-year-old Belarusian has yet to lose a set at the tournament, but she was strong as she won 6-2, 6-2, against Paolini, the sixth seed.

Mirra Andreeva defeated Sabalenka earlier this month at Indian Wells, making it two finals in a row. Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, lost to Andreeva in the Indian Wells earlier this month.

For the first time in Miami, Sabalenka will face American fourth seed Jessica Pegula or teenage wildcard Alexandra Eala of the Philippines on Saturday.

Sabalenka, the top seed, outlasted Paolini on Thursday with devastating serves and groundstrokes.

In a victory that was only one hour and 13 minutes, Sabalenka barely put a foot wrong with her two mistimed overheads and an ambitious “tweener” shot that did not have enough power to trouble her opponent.

“Super-happy that I had another chance, another final, and another chance to win,” Sabalenka said.

She is a fantastic player, so I was prepared to work hard for every win.

Because she hits flat, I focused on my serve and made an effort to hit as low as possible. I was so happy with my level.

NBA looks into starting European basketball league

The NBA and Fiba, the world’s governing body, are considering forming a European league.

A 16-team league would be in the works at the beginning, with 12 permanent teams and four candidates for playoffs annually.

The new league would be integrated into the current European basketball landscape, according to the NBA, with teams also playing in their respective national leagues as part of the plan being considered.

The top NBA team, which includes US and Canadian players, is the best in the world.

The EuroLeague, which was founded by Fiba but has been run by Euroleague Basketball since 2000, is where Europe’s top teams currently compete.

Adam Silver, the head of the NBA, stated, “We think this is the right time to move on to the next stage.”

Our club owners expressed fervent support for us to continue to explore this opportunity at today’s board meeting.

He continued, “Nothing has been agreed, and he did not specify which teams might be involved.”

Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow, and Panathinaikos, the current champion, are the three EuroLeague teams with the most success.

There are no teams in the United Kingdom.

Silver said, “Sometimes, the products that come with those existing clubs are massive global brands.

In some cases, those brands were created through global soccer, not basketball, but we now know that there is a lot of people who root for those teams, so that becomes very relevant as well.

Silver further stated that games would run 40 minutes, rather than the NBA’s 48.

Salford Red Devils wages late for second time

Due to ongoing financial problems, the Red Devils of Salford haven’t paid players or staff on time for the second occasion this year.

Before the start of the current campaign, the club received an early payment of their 2025 revenue share due to a turbulent off-season.

On the eve of the season, the Red Devils were acquired by a consortium led by Swiss investment banker Dario Berta, but their problems persist, leading to the RFL enforcing a sustainability cap that has had an impact on team selection.

Our payroll wasn’t delivered this morning as scheduled, despite assurances, the statement said, as many people will already be aware.

Everyone at Red Devils of Salford continues to struggle with this situation.

We, as players and staff, have continued to uphold our commitments with professionalism, keeping the club competitive both on and off the field, regardless of this. We’re now awaiting the same level of commitment from those in charge of maintaining our organization’s stability.

The unwavering support of our fans and partners during this difficult time is both inspiring and humbling, and it makes a difference for both players and staff.

Boss Paul Rowley resolutely stated that his squad’s resolve would remain unchanged despite his pre-game media commitments for Sunday’s game against Wigan Warriors.

Red Devils of Salford’ current state:

  • Due to financial difficulties, Salford and November 2024 request that their 2025 revenues be paid off sooner. Three days later, this is finally granted.
  • 15 January 2025 – The RFL orders Salford to sell players as their financial issues continue into the new year.
  • 7 February 2025 A consortium led by businessman Dario Berta passes a takeover on the eve of the season. The new owners will pay the club’s debt and pledge “additional significant investment for the future growth of the club,” according to Berta’s group’s approval of the RFL.
  • 13 February 2025 – Despite the agreement to the takeover, the club is still in the sustainability cap, and they have the option of fielding mostly reserve players for their season opener against St Helens.

  • The biggest winning margin in Super League history is 82-0, as witnessed by Saints on February 15, 2025, a heavily depleted Salford. In the wake of their team selection, the RFL investigates them.
  • The sustainability cap is lifted on March 4, 2025, but it is later reinstated because of ongoing financial problems that the club’s campaign campaign started to face.
  • 6 March 2025 – On the eve of their game against Castleford, which results in another defeat, they are eventually paid with wages for February still due.
  • 13 March 2025: Talismanic half-back Marc Sneyd leaves the team to join Warrington, launching a flurry of important squad players like Tim Lafai and Brad Singleton.
  • Salford won their first Super League game 20 March 2025, sealing their impressive comeback against the Huddersfield Giants.

RFU chief Sweeney survives no-confidence vote

At a special general meeting, Bill Sweeney, the head of the Rugby Football Union, voted not to be a member.

The motion, which was introduced by a group of clubs, was overwhelmingly opposed by 65% of the vote.

The motion’s supporter, The Whole Game Union, had cited a number of perceived governance errors in Sweeney’s administration.

Sir Bill Beaumont, the interim chairman, expressed his satisfaction at the outcome.

“I firmly believe that those who voted in favor of the motion will respect and respect the outcome.” Let’s work together and concentrate on the things we can accomplish.

The time has come for division, and now is the right time to work together.

Sweeney, 67, had received a lot of negative press for winning the RFU’s record-setting RFU title last year.

Just a few weeks after announcing plans to lay off more than 40 staff members in the most recent round of redundancies, the RFU announced last year that it had suffered operating losses of £37.9 million.

The game is “being let down,” it says.

Paddy McAlpine, the co-chair of the Whole Game Union and the president of Chichester Rugby Club, made the motion to oust Sweeney at the SGM.

“We bring this motion because we think it’s overdue and necessary,” McCabe said.

The people tasked with leading the game are letting it down. It is dangerously inadequate, not just having flaws.

This is a turning point, the chance to declare our desire for a better future for English rugby, according to the statement.

Before the vote was cast, various club members, constituent bodies, council and board members voiced their support or defense for the motion throughout the 58-minute discussion.

It’s “time for rugby to come together.”

RFU board member Wayne Barnes vehemently opposed the motion and asserted that Sweeney’s departure would leave a significant hole at the top of English rugby.

Former referee Barnes said, “He takes all of those relationships, that experience, and that influence with him.”

“An untrained eye would fill the void,” says one author.

Barnes also argued that the majority of referees did not support the motion despite the first-time motion being brought by the Rugby Football Referees’ Union (RFRU).

“Russell should now come together at this time,” Barnes said.

“I sincerely hope the game’s enormous advantages can be celebrated.”

Barnes, who spoke on behalf of the RFU board, stated that the powers-that-be would continue to listen in order to end months of unrest and repair the gaps in English rugby.

He continued, “Clearly, a lot of work needs to be done to rekindle our relationship with the community game.”

“We need to concentrate on restoring trust,” he said.

The RFU board made a second motion that advocated for community-based governance reform.

Saka could return to Arsenal squad against Fulham

Images courtesy of Getty

Bukayo Saka, a winger for Arsenal, might be chosen for the Premier League match against Fulham the following week.

The 23-year-old has been out since December because he needed surgery after suffering a hamstring injury in Crystal Palace game.

Saka is now back in full training and his recovery has gone as planned. The Gunners will make a final decision regarding his return as soon as Tuesday’s game is made, but they are still cautious with it.

The England attacker should be ready to face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals in April, with the exception of any unanticipated delays.
