Beaten Taylor won’t make ‘hasty decision’ on future

After being humiliated by Ekow Essuman, Josh Taylor says he needs to take some time to decide whether or not to fight.

After a strong first half of the fight in Glasgow, the former undisputed world champion faded and all three judges gave Essuman the win on the scorecards.

The 34-year-old’s first welterweight appearance was bitterly disappointing, with many believing that he is now ready to end his career.

In an interview the morning after the fight, Taylor said, “I’m going to take a little time to just think about what’s coming.”

“I’ll just sit back and take a few weeks to unwind,” he said. I’ll hang them up if I really believe I’m not doing anything.

After the judges’ decision was announced at the Hydro, Taylor abruptly walked out of the ring, skipping to do post-fight interviews.

Taylor simply stated, “I just want to congratulate Ekow on a good performance, doing a good job, and getting the win.” In the ring, I congratulated him.

“I just completely ruined myself, which is why I jumped out of the ring.” My emotions were everywhere. I regret saying something in an interview that I didn’t want to do.

I should have taken the time and opportunity to thank everyone who showed up and continued to support me.

“The people in the arena lifted the roof over the place,” said one witness. The atmosphere was once more unbelievable.

Taylor claims that his recent struggles have resulted in his devastation and that inactivity, which he hasn’t fought for more than once in a calendar year since 2019, has contributed to his devastation.

He said, “I need to get more active and go outside at least a couple of times a year, if I’m going to keep going.”

Taylor: Does it take too long to hold on? – analysis

At the end, Taylor’s bloody and brusqué face told a different story about a fighter who has been taking too many shots for too long.

The Tartan Tornado’s decision to hang up the gloves has been a hot topic for some time, and this defeat strengthens the case.

Few boxers are able to negotiate their own terms and execute their perfect exit. There are hundreds of others who waited too long in search of that final moment of glory, just like Joe Calzaghe and Lennox Lewis.

Another Slam, another big name – Fearnley faces Wawrinka challenge on day two

French Open 2025

Location: Roland Garros, May 25 – June

When Stan Wawrinka made his French Open debut in 2005, Jacob Fearnley, a British national, was one month away from his fourth birthday.

Twenty years later, Fearnley will face the 40-year-old former champion in a Roland Garross match.

World No. 55 Fearnley has the potential and youthful vigor to defeat 2015 champion Wawrinka despite the gap in his clay-related experience.

The Swiss veteran, who has dropped to 138th in the rankings, won the second major of the year on a wildcard and has only won two matches in Paris since 2020.

When your opponents have won a lot on such big stages and been successful for so long, “I think you have to give them a certain amount of respect,” Fearnley said.

“But I believe the difficulty is perhaps not treating them with too much respect, so that you enter the match feeling defeated.

Wawrinka has obviously accomplished incredible things, but I must keep in mind that I’m both here to win and to play a match.

“I will always approach each situation with respect and a sense of triumph.”

On court 14, Fearnley and Wawrinka play for about 14:00 BST, with three more Britons playing on the following day.

Emma Raducanu plays Wang Xinyu from China at 10:00 BST, where Jodie Burrage and Danielle Collins square off immediately after Jodie Burrage and Danielle Collins. This is her first French Open match since 2022.

I still feel starstruck.

Fearnley is starting to draw attention-grabbing shots at famous faces all the time.

The 23-year-old Scot rose to the occasion when he made his Grand Slam debut last year against Novak Djokovic on Wimbledon’s Centre Court, but a gloomy atmosphere prevented him from defeating Nick Kyrgios in the Australian Open first round in January.

On his final performance in Rome, he played veteran Italian actor Fabio Fognini, who like Kyrgios, a firebrand who rouses partisan fervor, in a more recent role.

Fearnley told BBC Sport, “I joked about it with my team because I knew Richard Gasquet would play in his final French Open.”

Wawrinka is about to end their careers but still has excellent tennis playing.

French Open day two highlights including Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek in action

Prior to last month, Fearnley hadn’t even played an ATP clay-court match.

He was unranked in the professional tennis game at the time last year, but he is still a member of the “brutal” United States college tennis system, where he developed his aggressive game.

He climbed into the professional ranks after earning his kinesiology degree at Texas Christian University, leading to one of the fastest rises in ATP Tour history.

Fearnley has climbed to the top 50, tying Cameron Norrie for the title of the British men’s number two, as he did with Cameron Norrie.

Fearnley remarked, “We had just won our first national championships at TCU a year ago.”

It’s pretty amazing to see the progression and then play the main draw at the French Open a year later.

“I’m very pleased with the progress, but I still have to believe it.”

Still a ” pinch-me ” moment when you have to face-to-face with the superstars in the locker room.

“I still feel star-gazed.” Fearnley continued, “Like in Rome, Jannik] Sinner approached and shaked my hand.

Grealish left out of Man City squad for final game

For Manchester City’s final Premier League game against Fulham, Jack Grealish will not be included in the squad, which will add uncertainty to his future.

The 29-year-old did not travel to London with City, and he has only made seven top-flight starts this season, ending the campaign with just one goal in each of the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

Grealish was a unused substitute for Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final and was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s starting England squad.

Manager Pep Guardiola responded to BBC Match of the Day by stating only that he had selected before kick-off by saying “selection.”

Shay Given, a former City goalkeeper, claimed that the player’s “writing is on the wall” and that they must “see what is out there” for their careers.

Is there a return to Grealish?

Boss Guardiola made the headlines on Tuesday when he claimed in a bombshell that he would “quit” City if he had a sizable squad to manage next year following his stunning win over Bournemouth.

He then made it clear in the news conference on Friday that it was a joke, but he also reiterated that he needs to collaborate with a smaller group of players.

Since City’s official website lists 32 players, there are likely to be numerous departures.

Will there be others, though, like Gulp?

The forward made a significant contribution to the club’s triple success in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup in 2022-23, but he has struggled to replicate his best form, and his days at the club now seem numbered after being cut short on Sunday.

Grealish has grown accustomed to warming the bench and has only scored four Premier League goals in the last two years, including one strike this term.

He was signed from Aston Villa for £100 million in 2021, but he didn’t play for the team at Wembley against Palace last Saturday, and Guardiola chose to make his surprise debut in the second half against Argentine teenager Claudio Echeverri.

Grealish was “absolutely heartbroken” that he was cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad last summer because he didn’t play a lot of regular games for City and that this has had an impact on his international ambitions.

Sabalenka races to French Open first-round win

Reuters

French Open 2025

Location: Roland Garros, May 25 – June

Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning world no. 1, dropped just one game to launch her impressive French Open campaign against Kamilla Rakhimova.

Russian Rakhimova defeated Sabalenka 6-1, 6 0 6-0 in Paris, in just one hour.

The Belarusian continued to excel throughout the match, winning nine games straight to seal the victory.

Sabalenka dominated the first day of play on Court Philippe Chatrier by hitting 30 winners, breaking her opponent’s serve five times, and dominating the second day’s play.

Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, has never reached the French Open final, which would be her best effort if she had made it to the semi-finals in 2023.

The 27-year-old is, however, using this evidence to support her claim to be one of the tournament favorites.

In the quarters, she might face Chinese eighth seed Zheng Qinwen, who defeated 2021 runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-3 in her opening match, and three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek, who is also in the semis.

After winning against Rakhimova, Sabalenka used a polaroid camera to capture photos of her bags and court, a custom she has continued to do this year.

Marion Bartoli, the former Wimbledon champion, posed the question to Sabalenka about the camera in an on-court interview, saying, “The idea was to take some positive moments in my life. I started in December and I already have a pretty big album.

When I’m sad, I go through the album and remember the positive events that caused me to feel good.

Mboko, 18, excels in his Grand Slam debut.

Victoria Mboko, a teenager, made her Grand Slam debut by winning over Lulu Sun, who was 45 at the beginning of the day.

The Canadian-born 18-year-old won 6-1 7-6 (7-4) against New Zealander Sun, who defeated Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon in July of last year. She made it through qualifying without losing a set.

Mboko, who was ranked 333 at the start of the year, is now up to 120 in the world after her 38th victory.

She said, “I didn’t expect the whole thing, to be honest.” “I mean, even playing, even the quallies,” I mean. For the first time ever, I was so excited to play in a Grand Slam.

“It’s a surprise in and of itself,” the entire thing is. I mean, I feel like I can use it and make the most of it right now that I’m here.

Elina Svitolina, the 13th seed in Ukraine, won 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, against Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey, one of the more well-known names.

Kohli & Rohit showed blueprint for future – Gill

Images courtesy of Getty

New skipper Shubman Gill claims that former captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have a “blueprint” for India’s upcoming Test victories.

After the 38-year-old and the contemporary great Kohli both retired from the sport, Batter Gill, 25, was announced as Rohit’s replacement on Saturday.

India won 40 of its 68 Test victories, while Rohit, who took over in his place in 2022, had the next-best win percentage as captain.

Gill said, “I have always been inspired by Indian cricket’s greats and legends.”

“It’s very fortunate that I get to play with a lot of them.

Both had a different style, but it was inspiring to see them work toward a common goal.

Gill was chosen as the team’s skipper, ahead of bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who had previously been Rohit’s vice-captain.

His first five-test series, which will debut on June 20 in England, will be highly anticipated.

Gill, the captain of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, said, “I’m looking forward to this exciting opportunity, and I think the upcoming series in England will be very exciting.”

I think that my performance and my ability to lead by example, not just through my work but also through my discipline and effort on the field.

A leader should be able to tell a captain when to intervene and when to make room for the players, according to the article.

Everyone has a different personality because everyone has lived and grown up differently.

India won series victories in Australia and England, going 2-2, and were unbeaten in home matches throughout Kohli’s tenure as captain.

Although Australia defeated them in the 2023 World Test Championship and New Zealand’s unbeaten run at home was ended by New Zealand last year, they made it to the final under Rohit.

Virat was “very aggressive and wanting to lead from the front,” Gill claimed.

You might not notice that Rohit was aggressive in his expression.

He was a tactful and attentive observer. He addressed the players in a very friendly manner.
