‘An icon of British sport’ – England netball great Mentor to retire

At the conclusion of the Netball Super League season, Geva Mentor, regarded as England’s greatest netball player, will retire.

The 40-year-old Leeds Rhinos defender won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games with 175 caps representing her country.

In her 24-year career, she won two awards for her contributions to the world’s best netball team, including more than 310 games at the club level.

Mentor, a 16-year-old woman who has represented her country at six World Cups, made her Vitality Roses debut in 2000 against New Zealand.

She became the first person to play netball at six Commonwealth Games and become the first English player to do so.

She has won four championships with her club, the ANZ Championship, and the Super League.

For her outstanding contribution to international netball, Mentor received a CBE in 2018.

Mentor, who also won two World Championship bronze medals with England, said, “The time has come to end my playing career.”

“I’m grateful for the people I’ve met along the way, the opportunities I’ve had the chance to travel, and the memories I’ll cherish forever,” she said.

Thank you for challenging me, allowing me to remain true to myself, and thanking my team-mates, coaches, supporters, sponsors, franchises, leagues, and sports.

She has been one of the game’s biggest superstars and an icon in British sport for more than 20 years, according to franchise director Dan Busfield.

It has changed the game for a young franchise like ours to have someone with the skill and professionalism of Geva playing for our club and working with our staff and young players.

Players joining rebel league R360 would risk England futures

Players from England who participate in the potential new breakaway league for rugby union run the risk of losing out.

A revolutionary franchise league that aims to attract the game’s biggest stars is in development.

R360, or R360, is expected to launch in the following year, with sponsors from all other sports reported to be interested in participating.

The new league will not clash with international rugby, according to organizers, who also claim players will be able to play for their nations in international competitions like the Six Nations.

However, any Premiership player who leaves to compete in R360 runs the risk of stifling their international career.

There is no intention to change the terms of the PGP’s eight-year deal, which was announced in September 2024 to much fanfare, according to sources who spoke to the BBC. One leading administrator claimed that there is “zero chance” R360 will launch or attract the players needed.

However, plans for the rebel league are developing in an effort to alter the world order of rugby union.

The franchise competition would be held in some of the biggest cities in the world, with names like London, Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and Cape Town included in the bid to attract the top 300 men’s and women’s players in the world.

With the inclusion of American superstar Ilona Maher on the promotional material, R360 has pledged to “unlock the potential of the women’s game.”

However, some senior industry figures believe the proposals lack substance and will struggle to obtain the necessary investment or approval from the governing bodies.

According to a source who spoke to the BBC, “It’s the world 12s again,” the game’s shorter format never materialized.

R360 intends to hold events in two blocks, April through June, and August through September, with overlap for both the southern hemisphere Rugby Championship and the women’s Six Nations, which would not conflict with the men’s Six Nations or the women’s Six Nations.

Mike Tindall, a former Bath captain and rugby director, and Stuart Hooper, a former World Cup winner, lead R360.

In the prospectus, Tindall claims that R360 is being introduced as a response to a “club game” that “failed to capture the same level of interest and investment as international rugby.”

The international game is putting pressure on clubs all over the world, Tindall continued.

Man Utd set to open talks over Mbeumo deal

Bryan Mbeumo is expected to start negotiations with Manchester United at Brentford.

Ruben Amorim, the head coach of United, has made the summer his top priority by signing more striking players to bolster his misfiring attack.

With the signings of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee for big money, the Old Trafford side only managed four and three Premier League goals last season, which is the fifth-lowest total in the league.

Matheus Cunha, a Wolves forward, has already signed a deal with United and will join Old Trafford once his international commitments with Brazil are over.

After receiving indications that this summer would be his first choice, United are confident in making a move for Cameroon international Mbeumo, 25, who scored 20 goals for the Bees last season.

According to what it is understood, Mbeumo’s contract does not have a release clause and still has a year to go, with the option to extend it by another year.

He has been omitted from the squad for his country’s upcoming friendlies against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea, just like United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is also in the squad.

Mbeumo, who left French club Troyes in 2019, is not a natural number nine, but he is viewed as versatile, dynamic, powerful, and quick, and Amorim wants flexible players.

Kyrgios to miss Wimbledon with new injury setback

Nick Kyrgios, an Australian, has experienced a “small setback” since his most recent injury-related return, and he says he will miss this year’s Wimbledon.

Due to a troublesome wrist that required surgery, Kyrgios, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2022 final at the All England Club, has played very little tennis in the last two years.

The 30-year-old won his first singles match since 2022 at the Miami Open in March, but he later missed the French Open due to a knee injury, which had previously been his intention to play men’s doubles.

The Australian’s recovery has suffered a minor setback, and sadly I won’t be able to return for grass season this year.

I’m sincerely sorry for your disappointment and I know how much you’ve been anticipating seeing me out there. However, this is just another setback, and I’m already working hard to recover from this.

Women’s Nations League: Scotland vs. Netherlands

Kick-off time: Tuesday, 3 June, 1:10 p.m. BST

Due to a technical issue preventing their charter flight leaving Edinburgh on Monday, Scotland will only be arriving in the Netherlands for today’s final Women’s Nations League Group A game.

The game in Tilburg, which starts at 19:30 BST and is streamed on BBC Scotland, BBC iPlayer, and BBC Sport’s website and app, was scheduled for Eindhoven on Monday.

After a problem on the flight brought their plane to Scotland, they were forced to spend another evening in Edinburgh.

The charter company was unable to find a replacement flight on Monday, but the Scottish FA claim they made an effort to find one but failed.

They added that they were “extremely disappointed” in a statement.

The association acknowledged the impact it would have on preparations but argued that “the safety of all passengers is important.”

Dortmund confident of signing Jobe Bellingham

Media PA

Borussia Dortmund are confident in completing Jobe Bellingham’s signing from Sunderland.

Sunderland’s return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 has attracted a lot of interest in the 19-year-old’s behalf across Europe.

However, the German club believes they are now in a good position to secure Bellingham’s signature.

Although they haven’t yet started discussions with Sunderland, there are strong indications Bellingham wants to follow his brother Jude’s example and believes a deal will emerge.

A strong season-ending has significantly strengthened Dortmund’s bargaining position.

Dortmund were 11th in the Bundesliga, 10 points off the pace of a top-four spot with eight games left.

Jude Bellingham joined Dortmund from Birmingham City in 2020, and he made 132 appearances for the club during his three-year, German Cup-winning team in 2021.

Prior to joining Real Madrid in 2023, he immediately fell short of the Bundesliga title. He suffered injuries and watched Mainz and the team draw on the final day of the 2022-23 season, which would have seen Dortmund declared champion for the first time in 11 years.

Five years after Jude won the award, Jobe Bellingham was named the Championship’s Young Player of the Year last month.

Bellingham might compete in the Club World Cup.

Dortmund would be eligible to compete in the Club World Cup, which includes Real Madrid, his brother Jude’s current club, if he agreed a deal before June 10.

Jobe Bellingham is a member of England’s Under-21 squad for the European Under-21 Championship, which will take place in Slovakia on June 11 through 28. Bellingham has made four appearances for the Under-21 team.

For the Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13, England’s U21 boss Lee Carsley announced to BBC Sport that they would release players.

He declared, “We’re supporting all the players.” When they need a medical visit or a club meeting, “We have room in our schedule to make sure that they get a chance.” We agree with that.

I “wish I could have them here in the ideal,” I would say. You want your strongest squad, but we must prioritize the players, which is exactly what we are doing.

We have been preparing for it, I believe. We were always anticipating a potential loss of two or three.

Fifa are said to have won more matches than our competitions. In that case, any player’s teams and clubs will always come out on top in that competition, with any exception.
