‘Like revving a motorbike’ – Field Of Gold routs Ascot rivals

In the St James’s Palace Stakes at Ascot, Field of Gold won in a stunning fashion.

Ruling Court came third, three and a half lengths behind Henri Matisse, who is the 8-11 favorite for trainers John and Thady Gosden.

Field of Gold finished second in the 2, 000 Guineas before winning the Irish version, which was a decisive victory.

Keane, who took Kieran Shoemark off the horse after his Guineas defeat at Newmarket, was recently appointed the owners’ retained rider, Judmonte.

When you ask him, it’s instant, like a motorbike revving.

11 years prior to Field of Gold’s father Kingman’s victory in the same race.

The King Charles III Stakes was won by American Affair while Docklands won the Queen Anne Stakes.

Reaching High at Ascot was no fun for King’s runner.

Although Reaching High in the Ascot Stakes was not the royal couple’s horse, King Charles and Queen Camilla were present.

Alphonse Le Grande and Reaching High both had trouble before finishing eighth and ninth behind Billy Lee’s Rider Ascending, who won for Henry de Bromhead.

“Ryan]jockey Moore just said he didn’t get any runs,” Moore said. It’s disappointing because he’s finished running all of a sudden but still has no luck, according to Reaching High’s trainer Willie Mullins.

For Joseph O’Brien, Nurburgring, Comfort Zone, and Leinster were the horses of Irish descent who took the first four spots.

After Rosallion’s near-miss, James Doyle led owners Wathnan Racing to Haatem (8-1) with victory in the Wolferton Stakes, which provided some comfort for trainer Richard Hannon.

Doyle returned to the Gosdens in the same colors on French Master, a 7-2 favorite, for the Copper Horse Stakes.

In addition, jockey Frankie Dettori made an eye-opening return to Royal Ascot with his most notable public appearance in the UK since declaring bankruptcy.

The 54-year-old, who relocated to the United States last year, remarked, “Never say never.”

By a nose, Docklands wins the dramatic opener.

The 14-1 shot victory over favorite Rosallion in the opening Queen Anne Stakes was a dramatic victory for Docklands.

After Australian jockey Mark Zahra dropped his whip in the closing stages, the winner, trained by Harry Eustace, was just able to claim victory in a photo finish of the Queen Anne Stakes.

“Everyone kept frightening me with the whip regulations, so I thought it was just as simple to throw it away at the 200-meter mark,” said Zahra.

After rider William Buick lost his whip and struggled to find a clear passage, Cairo finished third with Notable Speech in the 100-point victory.

At the 2023 meeting, Docklands placed second behind the Queen Anne stakes, which she won.

Jim Goldie’s first Group One victory came at the King Charles III Stakes thanks to American Affair.

The 11-1 winner edged out Frost At Dawn by a neck thanks to Paul Mulrennan’s riggedness.

“Funnily enough, I had a good chance that he would succeed today,” he said. It means a lot, Goldie, who has been training since 1994, said.

The Coventry Stakes winner, which was 7-2 favorite Gstaad, came in third and third behind outsiders Do Or Do Not (80-1) and Coppull (66-1).

Moore’s mount ran his horse toward the end of the track, giving trainer Aidan O’Brien an 11th-place finish.

Royal Ascot prepared for the heat wave

Over the course of five days, the Berkshire track is expected to have around 270, 000 spectators.

Ascot is confident that it will handle a week of warm weather, with Saturday’s high temperature forecasts posing as high as 29C.

A course spokesman said that “roughbred racehorses can run in very hot temperatures, including in countries like Dubai.”

“We give them lots of water and ice whenever possible to make sure their welfare here at Royal Ascot.”

We have spent days at Royal Ascot exceeding 30C, according to the team’s dedicated efforts to cool the horses after they finish their races.

The going conditions are described as good to firm, with the ground being watered to promote safety for runners and riders.

Hezbollah watches on as Iran and Israel battle, for now

Beirut, Lebanon – When Israel attacked Lebanon in September 2024, Fatima Kandil left her home in Beirut’s southern suburbs, known colloquially as Dahiyeh. As the area sustained wide-scale Israeli air strikes, many Lebanese fled Dahiyeh for other parts of the country or, like Kandil, sought refuge in Iraq.

Nearly seven months after the November ceasefire between Israel and the armed Lebanese group Hezbollah – an agreement Lebanon says Israel has repeatedly violated – rockets are lighting up the night sky once again. But this time, Hezbollah is not involved. Instead, Israel and Iran are exchanging direct military attacks.

“We don’t know how this will all end, so we are undoubtedly tense,” Kandil, now back in Lebanon, told Al Jazeera. However, she added that she had a feeling of satisfaction seeing missiles rain down on Israel. “Our revenge is being taken,” she said.

While Kandil’s sentiment is shared by some in Lebanon, others – those who see Iran’s support for Hezbollah, a group that has dominated Lebanon militarily and politically for two decades, as nefarious – cheered on the Israeli attacks against Iran. Many people in Lebanon told Al Jazeera they hoped that stability would prevail and that their country wouldn’t be dragged back into a prolonged conflict or subjected to the ferocity and frequency of the Israeli attacks it suffered last year.

“People are taking precautions,” Karim Safieddine, a Lebanese political writer and academic, told Al Jazeera. “Some are readying their bags.”

No intervention … yet

Early Friday, Israel struck Iran and assassinated several top commanders in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) along with top nuclear scientists. Numerous civilians were also killed, including children, according to Iranian state media.

Hours later, Hezbollah released a statement condemning the Israeli attacks and offering condolences for the slain Iranian officers. But analysts say the statement was a clear sign that Hezbollah would not be entering the battle in support of Iran.

“Currently, there is no need for Hezbollah to intervene, as Iranian missiles are capable of confronting the Israeli occupation,” said Qassem Kassir, a Lebanese political analyst supportive of the group. “However, if the situation escalates into a full-scale war, nothing prevents the situation from changing.”

Hezbollah, founded amid the Lebanese civil war in 1982 with Iranian backing and funding, draws much of its support from Lebanon’s Shia Muslim community. The group began firing rockets at Israel on October 8, 2023, after the start of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Israeli attacks in Lebanon between October 2023 and November 2024 largely targeted areas where Shia live, killing around 4,000 civilians and fighters, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health.

Many Lebanese are still reeling from the damage left by Israel’s attacks. Some remain displaced from their villages in southern Lebanon, which was razed. Hezbollah’s priority is to ensure that homes and towns are built in the area.

While Israel is still hitting targets around the country, mostly in southern Lebanon but occasionally in the Beirut suburbs as well, any resumption of military activity by Hezbollah would likely draw an even more intense Israeli response and further disrupt reconstruction efforts.

Much of Hezbollah’s military arsenal was reportedly destroyed during the Israeli attacks, though analysts believe they have retained some arms, including ballistic missiles.

Still, Hezbollah’s lack of intervention in the current Israel-Iran conflict is “evidence of their lack of capacity”, Safieddine said. Hezbollah may not have the means to intervene militarily.

The Israeli campaign on Lebanon also left Hezbollah’s political leadership battered. Many of the group’s most senior military figures, including longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah, were assassinated. The group’s political hegemony is now being challenged by the Lebanese state, with pressure from the United States and Israel, as it moves to disarm Hezbollah and bring the use of force under the state’s exclusive authority.

For now, analysts believe there is a consensus and understanding between Tehran and Hezbollah that the group will not intervene.

“Domestic political circumstances make it extremely difficult for Hezbollah to join in Iranian retaliation,” Nicholas Blanford, a nonresident senior fellow with the US-based think tank Atlantic Council, told Al Jazeera. “And the Iranians recognise they can’t call on them.”

The battle within

While Hezbollah is sometimes referred to as an Iranian proxy, many experts say the group is more accurately described as a close ally of the IRGC and the Iranian government with shared interests and a similar ideology.

During Israel’s heavy bombardment of Lebanon between September and November 2024, Iran’s intervention was relatively limited. Israel invaded southern Lebanon, and while Israeli troops have pulled out of most of the Lebanese territory they entered during the war, they still occupy five points.

“There’s resentment and unhappiness toward Iran by Hezbollah because they feel Iran let them down in the recent conflict,” Blanford said. Iran reportedly asked Hezbollah not to use some of its more lethal weapons, which analysts linked to fears of an Israeli response on Iranian territory.

As for Israel’s attacks on Iran, there’s no indication that Tehran has asked Hezbollah to get involved yet, according to Kassir, the analyst thought to be close to Hezbollah. But that might change if a protracted war draws in actors from around the region.

Blanford said he doesn’t expect to “see Hezbollah joining in full scale”, but noted that if Israel starts to struggle in its fight against Iran, it could lead to “some activity along the Blue Line”, the line traversing Lebanon’s southern border. If that happens, Blanford said, Hezbollah may look to carry out operations in the Israeli-occupied areas of Lebanon.

Israel’s plans for Lebanon and Hezbollah remain unclear, but the sound of Israeli drones, an ever-present buzz during the most severe days of the war, has returned to Beirut’s skies in the last few days.

Zara Tindall’s trending aviator sunglasses from Royal Ascot are still available to buy

This summer chunky aviator sunglasses reign supreme as the must-have accessory, and Zara Tindall has nailed the trend with her go-to pair at this year’s Royal Ascot

The first day of Royal Ascot kicked off today and saw plenty of famous faces and royal family members descending on the racecourse for the world-famous event. Amongst the royal racegoers was Zara Tindall, who rarely misses the chance to attend an equestrian event.

For the occasion Zara opted for a figure-flattering blue midi dress which she completed with pale pink accessories, however the part of her outfit that most caught our eye was her sunglasses, which were perfect for nailing this summer’s trending aviator silhouette. Chunky aviators have become this year’s must-have style of sunnies, and Zara’s Ledbury Aviator-Style Sunglasses from Finlay & Co are the perfect example of how to execute the trend whilst still looking sophisticated and timeless.

Despite their chunky design, the Finlay & Co shades manage to look elegant, rather than edgy, thanks to their semi-transluscent frames. This stops them from looking too heavy or obtrusive on your face, with the soft beige colour ensuring they still look expensive and luxurious.

Whilst most trend-led sunglasses actually offer very little protection for your eyes, the lenses in Zara’s Ledbury Aviator-Style Sunglasses are equipped with Carl Zeiss lenses for 100% protection from UVA/UVB rays, and have a graduated design which stops the glare from getting in your eyes. Each pair is also handmade in Italy from sustainable biodegradable Mazzucchelli acetate, which makes their £150 price tag all the more reasonable.

We did spot some other similar styles to Zara’s chic sunglasses, including this limited edition pair of Le Specs Fortune Teller Aviator-Frame Sunglasses for £65. They have a slightly more square-shaped aviator design, with green-tinted lenses that also offer 100% UV protection.

Meanwhile this pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses (£139) have a more traditional rounded aviator design, and come in five colours. Meanwhile bargain hunters can pick up H&M’s £12.99 Aviator Sunglasses in four different colourways, although it’s worth noting that their lenses are “UV protective” tinted plastic, and may not offer the same protection as the 100% coverage other pairs do.

Boulter one of four Britons to win in Nottingham

Katie Boulter, a two-time defending champion, was one of four Britons who advanced to the Nottingham Open on day two.

In the first round, British champion Boulter defeated New Zealand’s Lulu Sun 6-2, 6-2, in 75 minutes.

Boulter, who qualified for Wimbledon last year as a qualifier, saved each of her four break points against Sun.

Leolia Jeanjean defeated French qualifier Kartal 6-3, 6-4, the British number three, behind Emma Raducanu and Boulter.

Following Xu’s 6-3, 6-3 victory over Katie Volynets and Jones’ 7-5, 6-4 victory over compatriot Harriet Dart, Xu claimed her first WTA Tour main-draw victory.

At least one British player will likely advance to the quarter-finals, with Boulter taking on Kartal on Thursday.

Boulter described playing her compatriot as “I’ve played enough of them now.”

Sonay is a fantastic tennis player, and I have a lot of respect for her. I’ve always assured her that she would not be able to lower her ranking.

We recently had a very close encounter on grass, so I’m confident it will be a real battle.

Across the board, Xu surpassed American Volynets, who is 254 places above her in the world rankings, in an impressive victory.

In a second set that included six break-of-service, Xu, 17, held his own as he battled the world’s number 96 to defeat Poland’s Magda Linette.

I had to put my trust in both myself and my game. I’ve been playing a lot of tennis on the grass, Xu said.

I enjoy playing above my ranking without feeling any pressure on myself.

2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova defeated world number six Madison Keys 7-5 7-6 (8-6) at the Berlin grass-court competition.

As Vondrousova recovers from a lengthy shoulder injury, her first victory over a top-10 player this year is her first.

Bianca Andreescu defeated Queen’s second-placed Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 6-3, to advance.

Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion, lost to Liudmila Samsonova 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in her first grass-court match of the year.
