Messi signs new deal with Inter Miami to keep Argentina star in MLS to 2028

Inter Miami has confirmed that Lionel Messi has agreed to an extension to his contract that will allow him to play in Major League Soccer (MLS) until the end of the 2028 season.

The simple caption “He’s Home” reads, “He’s Home,” and a video of Messi signing a contract was posted on Inter Miami’s X feed, which is currently being constructed in Miami, Florida, in the US.

In a club statement, Messi, 38, stated, “It makes me really happy to stay here and continue with this project that has also turned out to be a dream and has turned into a beautiful reality – playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park.

Messi continued, “I’ve been very happy since I arrived in Miami, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.”

David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter Miami, said Messi’s decision to stay extended was in line with his “commitment to the city, the club, and the game.”

Beckham remarked, “He still wants to win and is still as committed as he has ever been.” We consider ourselves fortunate as owners to have a player who loves the game as much as he does, who has contributed to the game’s advancement as he has, and who can inspire the next generation of young talent as he does.”

The 2025 MLS season’s current contract expires at the end of the World Cup winner’s reign.

After club sources told AFP last month that the franchise had reached an extension agreement, the new agreement had been seen as a formality.

The United States, Canada, and Mexico host the World Cup in 2026, but Messi’s contract guarantees that he will continue competing until the end of that year.

After a turbulent time at Paris Saint-Germain, Messi left for Inter Miami in 2023, and he has since had a transformative impact on the league, generating record attendances and generating ticket sales.

As he welcomed the news of Messi’s contract extension, MLS Commissioner Don Garber said on Thursday, “When Lionel Messi made MLS his league of choice, it marked a turning point for Inter Miami as well as for our entire sport in North America.

After graduating from the Spanish giants’ youth system in 2004, Messi spent the majority of his stellar career at Barcelona. He played there from 2004 to 2021.

He won the La Liga title ten times at Barcelona and four times the UEFA Champions League title.

He led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, and he wants to try to keep the trophy the following year.

He has won the Copa America twice with Argentina in 2021 and 2024 and has 114 international goals.

Although Messi could be matched by Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi could compete in a sixth World Cup next year, which would establish a new all-time record.

The eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or has 16 career World Cup goals, just three goals short of Miroslav Klose’s.

Argentina comfortably advanced to the finals of the following year, coming in nine points clear of South America.

In what may have been Messi’s final competitive game against Venezuela two weeks ago, he finished with eight goals, including a brace.

Even though Inter Miami did not make the playoffs, he was named the MLS’s most valuable player in the 2024 season.

He became the fastest player in MLS history to score 40 goals in 2025.

After finishing third in the Eastern Conference this year, Messi has resurrected Miami and placed it in contention for the playoffs.

Lockyer returns to football after cardiac arrest with Bristol Rovers deal

After agreeing to a one-year contract with Rovers of Bristol, Tom Lockyer will soon be able to play again after suffering a cardiac arrest during a game.

The 30-year-old Wales defender has returned to fitness after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing for Luton in a Premier League game against Bournemouth in December 2023. He has been training with the League Two club.

Six years after leaving Charlton Athletic, Lockyer makes his professional debut at the club where he first started.

Although Lockyer’s victory at Wembley was marred by a collapse Lockyer sustained during the game, he helped the club advance to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2023.

Before experiencing cardiac arrest against Bournemouth, he later made a second return to action that year.

Once again playing for Rovers of Bristol, Lockyer stated on the club website.

“I’ve been training here for a while, and I’ve made an effort to avoid thinking too much or getting too excited about the ifs, buts, and maybes.

However, it was simple for me to decide whether to return home once I realized that Darrell [Clarke, Rovers of Bristol head coach] wanted to accomplish something.

It’s difficult to explain, but it’s what I’ve been working so hard for the past two years.

“I hope a football shirt will have many, many more positive memories. I just want to enjoy the little victories that have been returned from a football field. Without this, I wouldn’t be doing it.

What better place than Rovers of Bristol for me to play football than here because I love it and have that overwhelming desire to do so?

“Tommy is back with us, I’m delighted,” Clarke continued. I have a lot of admiration for him, which has only grown stronger with the stress his and his family have endured recently.

“I always believed that Locks could achieve success in every way possible, and he demonstrated that by playing for Luton Town in the Premier League and exemplifying everything the fans in our team appreciate.”

Carol Vorderman’s love life from divorces to ‘special friends’ and request from Pete Wicks

Carol Vorderman has two previous marriages and has been single for the past 15 years, but she still has a number of “special friends.”

Carol Vorderman has spoken out about Pete Wicks’ “crush” comments whilst discussing her romantic life. The 64 year old former Countdown star revealed she has “basically been single” for 15 years following her split from journalist Des Kelly.

Carol, who has had two weddings, revealed her disapproval in 2022. She now favors having several “special friends” for informal gatherings.

The TV personality claims this lifestyle has given her a far “freer” way of living, reports Wales Online. However, in a recent chat with Yours magazine, Carol refused to disclose exactly how many special friends she currently enjoys.

She continued, “I’ve been basically single for about 15 years, despite having what I call medium-term boyfriends for a year or so.”

My two children, my family, and my closest friends make up the family. We have a mutual love. Because of how much I have to offer my life, I don’t need love.

Here we examine Carol’s romantic history over the years, including a cheeky remark from former The Only Way is Essex star Pete Wicks.

the two marriages of Carol

At the age of 24, Carol marries for the first time. Although the union only lasted for a year, she wed Christopher Mather from the Royal Navy.

Carol admits to doing “unfavorable” things during the wedding ceremony.

Speaking on BBC Wales, she said: “I was wearing a dress, right, you know the days when you had the white dress for the day, for the big thing itself.”

When co-host Owain Wynn Evans enquired whether she changed outfits, Carol responded: “And I found a frock to wear at night time – it was like something they now wear in Strictly Come Dancing. It was entirely mesh with sequins in the right places.

So I performed It’s Raining Men on the stage while having something that was probably inappropriate for a bride.

Four years after her divorce, Carol and Patrick King, a management consultant, wed. Before splitting in 2000, the couple welcomed their second child, Katie and Cameron.

After splitting with Des, Carol and Des began a five-year romance. Before reuniting for a while, the couple ultimately decided to end their relationship.

Carol is “freer” with “special friends.”

Carol has revealed that she feels more comfortable keeping special friendships than engaging in a monogamous union.

During a 2022 appearance on This Morning, Carol explained: “Our mothers told us that we should marry when we were still 18 or 19 or 20, so we grew up with that convention that you should find one partner for life. My view is not quite like that.”

She continued, “I live my life in chapters, and you have said this chapter since I was about 50. So, I’ve lived a much more libere life for the past ten or so.

Carol’s separation from two of her “special friends” was confirmed last year.

She stated to The Times, “Life has moved on.” It is impulsive. Although there is no ownership, it functions.

Pete Wicks’ “weird crush”

Former TOWIE star Pete Wicks, who co-hosts the Pride of Britain red carpet with his mate Sam Thompson, has previously labelled Carol as his “weird crush”. On his Staying Relevant podcast, Pete cheekily said: “Carol let me know when you’re free.

I’m anxious to meet with you so we can talk math, drink tequila, and have a delicious breakfast prepared by yours truly!

I didn’t know who he was then, but he’s lovely, Carol exclaimed to Heat magazine.

Not just Carol’s ex-Strictly Come Dancing contestant is in love with her either. Melvin Odoom from BBB Radio One has also expressed his admiration for the actress.

NBA related arrests rise above 30 in FBI crackdown on illegal gambling

In connection with two separate but interrelated federal gambling investigations that involved the league and the Mafia, more than 30 people were charged on Thursday, including Chauncey Billups, a former NBA Hall of Fame player and head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Terry Rozier, a Miami Heat guard.

At a press conference in Brooklyn on Thursday, FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the schemes, one of which focused on insider sports betting and another that rigged poker games nationwide, spanned years and involved tens of millions of dollars in illicit gains from wire fraud, money laundering, extortion, and gambling.

Rozier allegedly worked with their criminal partners, who allegedly used straw bettors to place multiple bets based on the tips, according to authorities, and was one of several National Basketball Association insiders who allegedly provided non-public information about upcoming games to them.

For instance, Rozier told associates in advance that he would leave a game early with a presumptive injury, which would have allowed them to wager more than $200, 000 that he would not meet his anticipated statistical goals for the game, according to officials.

Patel remarked, “This is the NBA’s insider trading saga.”

According to officials, Billups was accused of aiding in a separate case in helping to rig poker games so that unknowing players could be tricked into playing against famous people. In addition to the x-ray tables and card shufflers, the defendants also used cutting-edge technology to fix the games in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and other locations.

According to officials, Bonanno, Gambino, Lucchese, and Genovese organized crime families in New York, which operated some of the underground poker games there, were also involved in the rigging. According to the prosecution, the families allegedly laundered money using cryptocurrency and other means, including extortion and robbery, to collect unpaid debts and use extortion and robbery to pay off the profits.

Brooklyn US Attorney Joseph Nocella said that while the arrests were the result of two separate indictments, some defendants, including former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach Damon Jones, were also charged in both cases.

Sports betting strikt

Rozier and Billups were given a leave of absence, according to the NBA, and they would continue to cooperate with authorities.

The statement read, “We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game continues to be our top priority.”

James Trusty, Rozier’s attorney, claimed that prosecutors “appear to be relying on actual evidence of wrongdoing rather than taking the word” of spectacularly unbelievable sources. The NBA cleared Terry, and these prosecutors reopened the case.

The number of arrests is likely to raise questions about how closely connected online sportsbooks and professional sports leagues are, which both have benefited from a significant increase in legalized betting and have also tried to protect fans and gamblers by ensuring the integrity of the game.

Some lawmakers are concerned about the proliferation of bets that could be most easily manipulated by players, such as prop bets, which allow bettors to speculate whether a particular player will hit or miss particular statistical totals in a particular game.

Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, stated to ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday that he favors more federal sports betting laws and that some betting partners had asked them to impose prop bet limits on more marginal players.

Players are punished

In recent years, several players in the “Big Four” North American men’s leagues have been punished for gambling. These include the NBA, the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Hockey League.

Jontay Porter, a former NBA player, was charged with manipulating his performance to win wagers on his play, and he was given a life ban and a 2024 plea deal.

Pete Rose, the all-time leader in hits, was suspended from the MLB in 1989 after being caught betting on games while managing the Cincinnati Reds.

Rose was posthumously removed from the MLB’s permanently ineligible list earlier this year, making him eligible for the Hall of Fame after US President Donald Trump repeatedly called him.

Billups, 49, is the head coach of Portland for the fifth time. In addition to the New York Knicks, he played for seven other teams during his NBA career, and in 2004 he was named Most Valuable Player of the Finals with the Detroit Pistons.

On Thursday in Portland, he was scheduled to make his first court appearance.

Rozier, 31, is entering his 11th NBA season with a career-high of 13.9 points per game. According to the sports contract tracking website Spotrac, his 2025-26 salary is $26.6 million.

Sanctioned Russian ex-general back in FIA fold

Images courtesy of Getty

Former Russian general, who has been banned by the US and the UK, has been invited back to the FIA, the body that regulates motorsport.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Victor Kiryanov resigned from his position on the FIA World Motorsport Council.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the body’s president, reinstated him for the meeting on June 11.

Former Russian deputy minister of internal affairs, Kiryanov, as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Switzerland, are all on the list of countries that have sanctions against him.

According to HM Treasury documents, the sanctions list “allows the freezing of funds and economic resources of some individuals, groups, or organizations engaged in destabilizing Ukraine, compromising or threatening Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, or independence, or obtaining benefits from or supporting the Government of Russia.”

He is described as an “involved person” under EU sanctions because the person claims to have been “involved in obtaining a benefit from or supporting the Government of Russia by working as a director, manager, or equivalent position” of a government-affiliated organization, Rostec, which is owned by the government of Russia and conducts business in a sector of strategic significance to the government of Russia, specifically the defense sector.

Kiryanov serves as the head of the Russian Automobile Federation, which is a significant aspect of his involvement with the FIA.

The FIA World Council and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) set up a number of guidelines for Russian nationals’ participation in sport following the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian and Belarussian officials were required to temporarily resign from their positions and responsibilities as elected officers and commission members.

Kiryanov resigned from his position on the world council, which he voluntarily did insisted at the time by Ben Sulayem and David Richards, the chairman of MotorsportUK.

The IOC’s position on Russia has not changed, but on May 12 the FIA world council approved the reinstatement of Russian and Belarussian officials “in the interests of fairness.”

Kiryanov has since attended World Motorsport Council hearings in June and October. Multiple sources have reported to BBC Sport that at the first, he personally thanked Ben Sulayem for inviting him back to the world council.

He is not eligible to serve in the next presidential election, which will begin in December, according to the list of members.

Due to a misunderstanding of FIA regulations, Ben Sulayem is unable to compile the necessary list of vice-presidents for sport, making Ben Sulayem unopposed in the election.

A senate-elected senate is in charge of the FIA, according to a FIA spokesperson. The world motorsport council elects and serves as individuals.

The FIA has a long history of support for maintaining neutrality in motor sport.

Its decision to allow all elected officials to serve their terms, regardless of nationality, is in line with the practices of other international sports organizations.

The spokesperson referred BBC Sport to the FIA statutes, which state that the organization will “promote the protection of human rights and human dignity, and refrain from manifesting discrimination in the course of its activities and from taking any action in this regard.”
