Hunger crisis in Gaza is ‘catastrophic’ despite ceasefire, WHO chief says

The UN’s health agency has issued a warning about the Gaza hunger crisis after international aid organizations demanded that Israel stop preventing humanitarian deliveries.

Aid organizations announced on Thursday that supplies to the besieged enclave are not meeting the population’s nutritional needs, while the UN’s World Food Programme reported that supplies to Gaza are still far short of the 2, 000-ton daily target because only two crossings into Palestinian territory are available.

According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, “the situation continues to be catastrophic because there is not enough food,” adding that “there is no dent in hunger.”

The UN warned on Wednesday that at least a quarter of Gaza’s population, including 11,500 pregnant women, will be starving, citing “generational” effects from malnutrition.

According to Andrew Saberton, UNFPA’s deputy executive director, 80% of newborns are premature or underweight before October 2023.

Malnutrition will have “generational effects,” he added, “not on the mother, but on the newborn, which will likely lead to ever-more-long-lasting care and issues throughout the baby’s life.”

In Gaza City and its environs in August, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported that more than 500 000 people in the Gaza Strip were “catastrophic conditions” when they were declared a “catastrophic condition”.

On October 10, a US-brokered ceasefire became effective. The UN wanted to have about 2, 000 tonnes of humanitarian aid entering every day as part of the ceasefire agreement. Because only two of the Israeli-controlled crossings into Gaza, known as Kerem Shalom and Kissufim in Israel, are operational, according to the WFP, which only allow 750 metric tonnes of food to enter the Gaza Strip each day.

Even two weeks after the ceasefire began, Bahaa Zaqout, the Palestinian NGO’s director of external relations, said, “The situation in the Gaza Strip continues to be catastrophic.”

Zaqout cited instances where commercial trucks allowed in items like seeds and olives while also preventing people from entering items like soda and soda.

He continued, noting that while some fruits and vegetables are imported into Gaza, they are exorbitantly expensive. “Unfortunately, these do not respond to the minimum nutritional values for children, women, and the most vulnerable groups,” he continued.

He claimed that one kilogram (2. 2 pounds) of tomatoes now cost about 15 shekels ($4.50).

On Thursday, 41 aid organizations, including Oxfam and the Norwegian Refugee Council, published an open letter accusing Israel of “arbitrarily” delaying aid deliveries into Gaza, alleging that the Israeli government has consistently blocked their requests to begin humanitarian efforts seriously.

The letter stated that “99 requests by international NGOs to deliver aid to Gaza were rejected while six requests submitted by UN agencies were denied” between October 10 and October 21. “Tents and tarpaulins, blankets, mattresses, food and nutrition supplies, hygiene kits, sanitation supplies, assistive devices, and children’s clothing are all items that Israeli authorities should not restrict during the ceasefire,” he said.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on Wednesday that Israel must meet the “basic needs” of Gaza’s population. Israel allegedly broke international law by refusing to provide aid to Gaza between March and May, according to Palestinian ICJ lawyers and Palestinian ICJ representatives in April.

Since then, humanitarian organizations have requested more aid from Israel and demand that it be given in addition.

Aid organizations stated in an open letter on Thursday that supplies are packaged, staff are trained, and ready to respond on a scale. Access is what we currently require. The terms of the ceasefire agreement and international humanitarian law must be upheld by Israel’s authorities.

Lionel Messi Signs New Inter Miami Contract

Inter Miami has extended Lionel Messi’s contract, which will allow the Argentine superstar to play for the next two years until the end of the 2028 campaign.

The simple caption “He’s Home” appears in a video of Messi signing a contract while he is seated at a table in the middle of the team’s new Freedom Park stadium, which is currently under construction.

In a club statement, Messi, 38, stated, “It makes me really happy to stay here and continue with this project that has also become a dream and has turned into a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park.

Messi continued, “I’ve been very happy since I arrived in Miami, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.”

David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter Miami, said Messi’s decision to stay extended was in line with his “commitment to the city, the club, and the game.”

Beckham remarked, “He still wants to win and is still as committed as he has ever been.” We consider ourselves fortunate as owners to have a player who loves the game as much as he does, who has contributed to the game’s advancement as he has, and who can inspire the next generation of young talent as he does.”

The 2025 MLS season’s current contract expires at the end of the World Cup winner’s reign.

After club sources told AFP last month that the franchise had reached an extension agreement, the new agreement had been seen as a formality.

The United States, Canada, and Mexico host the World Cup in 2026, but Messi’s contract guarantees that he will continue competing until the end of that year.

The final will be held at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on July 19 and will begin the tournament on June 11.

After a disappointing time at Paris Saint-Germain, Messi left for Inter Miami in 2023, but his most successful career was spent there from 2004 to 2021. He played for Barcelona as a youth undergrad before joining the Spanish giants.

He won the La Liga title ten times at Barcelona and four times the UEFA Champions League title.

He led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, and he wants to try to keep the trophy the following year.

He has won the Copa America twice with Argentina in 2021 and 2024 and has 114 international goals.

Although Messi’s potential rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal could do the same for him at a sixth World Cup in 2017, which would establish a new all-time record.

The eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or has 16 career World Cup goals, just three goals short of Miroslav Klose’s.

Argentina comfortably advanced to the finals of the following year, coming in nine points clear of South America.

In what may have been Messi’s final competitive game against Venezuela two weeks ago, he finished with eight goals, including a brace.

Even though Inter Miami did not make the playoffs, he was named the MLS Most Valuable Player in the 2024 season.

He became the fastest player in MLS history to score 40 goals in 2025.

After finishing third in the Eastern Conference this year, Messi has resurrected Miami and placed it in contention for the playoffs.

He won the MLS’s Golden Boot award for his 29 goals in 28 games as he wrapped up Inter Miami’s regular season with a superb hat-trick last Saturday in a 5-2 victory over Nashville SC.

Sugababes’ Mutya Buena says postnatal depression was a big reason for quitting band

Mutya Buena, a singer for the Sugababes, left the group at the end of 2005, just after giving birth to Tahlia-May. Amelle Berrabah took her place.

Sugababes star Mutya Buena revealed postnatal depression was one of the contributing reasons to her quitting the hit band. The 40-year-old musician left the girl group at the end of 2005, a few months after welcoming her daughter Tahlia-May, and was soon replaced by singer Amelle Berrabah.

Mutya later joined Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy on a tour and jointly record new music. Mutya revealed in a new interview that she would have left the organization if she had had more free time to “colllapse” while away from her job and how she would have stayed.

The actress revealed that when I left, it was when I had just my daughter.

Bandmate Keisha discussed the challenging experiences the group has had over the years in an interview with Glamour UK.

We had every reason to give up, but God said, “It’s your time,” but we were able to go through those trenches, to be told no, to be told who we should be, to experience those frustrations.

The Sugababes acknowledged earlier this year that they had “obstacles” to overcome during their comeback.

Fans were left speechless in 2011 when it became known that Mutya, Keisha, and Siobhán would be reunited for the first time since Donaghy’s departure.

The original members, however, formed MKS and performed a number of sell-out shows nationwide as well as releasing original music after Keisha left the group in 2009.

The band regained the legal rights to use their name in 2019, which helped them reach fame.

Siobhán said the legacy left behind the recognizable girl group was “amazing” after speaking with the Mirror for the first time during an exclusive conversation.

On the one hand, doing a show makes everything so much easier because everyone chimes along to every performance. Additionally, there is a lot of new music to live up to, so I believe that is good pressure and inspires us.

According to Keisha, “We have always been important to us, and I think one of the main things that led to our getting back together was that we wanted to pick up where we left off.”

Mutya continued, “And give back to the fans as well; I think we’ve had such great supporters from then until now.” They “deserved a different ending,” Keisha continued.

Springbok Wessels given nine-game ban for genital grab

Jan-Hendrik Wessels, the Bulls’ United Rugby Championship front-rower, was given a nine-game suspension for grabbing Josh Murphy’s genitalia in the win over Connacht.

Connacht forward Murphy was sent a 20-minute red card after striking Wessels on the head in the 18th minute of the Bulls’ 28-27 victory in Galway on Friday.

Television match official (TMO) Hollie Davidson, who found no conclusive video evidence, reviewed the incident after Murphy complained to referee Mike Adamson about Wessels.

Wessels did not start until he was substituted in the second half.

Wessels was found to have violated law 9.27, which states: “A player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship,” despite the URC confirming Murphy’s 20-minute red card had been rescinded by a disciplinary panel. Performing this includes grabbing, twisting, or squeezing the genitalia.

The panel determined that the incident complied with World Rugby’s red card requirements and warranted a 12-week suspension, the shortest ban in the sport.

Wessels’ suspension, however, was reduced by three weeks as a result of the player’s “good conduct prior to and at the hearing and good record.”

The 24-year-old will not be allowed to play in the Springboks’ autumn Tests against Japan, France, Italy, and Ireland, but Wessels and the Bulls have the right to appeal.

Additionally, he won’t play in the Bulls’ URC matches against Glasgow, the Lions and Sharks, and the Investec Champions Cup encounters with Bordeaux and Northampton.

Wessels was a member of South Africa’s rugby championship-winning squad over the summer and has already won ten caps.

No Russians or Belarusians at Winter Paralympics

Images courtesy of Getty

Despite the International Paralympic Committee lifting its ban on them, Russian and Belarusian para-athletes will not compete in the 2026 Winter Paralympics.

The Games are overseen by the IPC, but there are four distinct governing bodies in charge of the six competitions in Cortina d’Ampezzo and Milan.

Although Russia and Belarus are now permitted to play ice hockey, three of the country’s governing bodies decided to continue their bans on the two nations after it was too late to participate in qualifying.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, where Belarus was a close ally of Russia, both nations were barred from Paralympic competition.

In 2023, an exception to the partial ban, which allows athletes to compete as neutrals, was introduced.

At a meeting last month, IPC members voted to allow Russian and Belarusian para-athletes to compete under their own flags after the two countries’ suspensions were lifted.

However, the four international federations have now informed the IPC that no two athletes are likely to make it to March’s Games in reality.

World Paralympics has already decided which nations will compete in the qualifying competition for the two remaining spots at the Games while the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), International Biathlon Union (IBU), and World Curling have not lifted their bans.

We fully respect the decisions of each international federation regarding the sports they govern, according to IPC president Andrew Parsons, just as the IPC fully respects the IPC General Assembly’s decision to not suspend NPC Belarus and NPC Russia.

Due to the positions held by FIS, IBU, and World Curling, athletes and teams from Belarus and Russia are currently unable to compete in their division’s events, preventing them from qualifying for the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.

The six teams for November’s Paralympic Games qualification tournament have already been chosen, despite Belarus and Russia’s ability to enter Paralympics competitions at this late stage of the process.
