Lagos Fire Service Blames Alaba Market Fire On Negligence

A power surge was responsible for the heinous inferno that destroyed a section of the Alaba International Market, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

No casualties or injuries were reported, though, according to the report.

The organization reported a fire outbreak at 155 Olojo Drive, opposite Tantalizers and Alaba International Market, in the state’s Ojo Local Government Area at 7:18 p.m.

The Ojo and Ijegun-Egba fire stations were immediately dispatched to the scene, according to the statement.

The incident involved several lock-up shops of various sizes, all located in a two-story building that occupied roughly 648 square meters and a five-hectare-long larger market space.

A statement dated October 22, 2025, signed by Maria Fadairo, the agency’s senior public affairs officer, partially read, reads, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started on the building shortly after the electricity was restored, due to negligence on the part of some shop owners.

The affected areas were difficult to access because the majority of shops were closed for the day, requiring forced entry to repress the fire, which had been confined to the floor due to the delay.

Furniture Stores and Other Businesses Are impacted

The state’s fire and rescue service added that a law office was primarily present in the stores that were primarily engaged in the sale of furniture and alternative power equipment.

According to the report, staff from the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Ojo Police Division worked together to bring the firefighting operations to a successful conclusion at 10:10.

Margaret Abimbola Adeseye, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service’s Controller General, praised the cooperative action of all parties involved, according to the statement.

Adeseye also stressed the importance of the public strictly adhering to fire safety measures, particularly in commercial areas, to avoid unnecessary fire incidents.

On Tuesday night, videos obtained by Channels Television showed several plazas in Ojo town completely engulfed in flames close to the Ojo Local Government Secretariat.

Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were also seen working to contain the fire in video.

Along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, a market is known for its sale of household goods, including furniture, building materials, and electronics.

One of West Africa’s largest commercial trade centers is also there.

One month prior to the incident at the six-story commercial complex Afriland Towers in Lagos Island, at least ten people were killed in the Alaba market fire.

‘Everything is good’ – Mateta & Zaha resolve rift

After an alleged falling-out during the international break, Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta claims to have no issues with former teammate Wilfried Zaha.

The 28-year-old made his France debut on October 10 with a 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in the world cup’s qualifying match before drawing 2-2 with Iceland three days later.

However, Mateta claimed that Zaha, a former Palace winger who is currently playing for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer, was one of his former teammates who “were laughing” when he expressed his desire to represent his nation.

Mateta claimed that any misunderstandings had now been resolved.

The striker, who has made 35 Premier League goals in 80 appearances since Zaha left the Eagles for Galatasaray in 2023, said, “I spoke with him.”

“Everything is good,” he says. We had a private conversation, that is all.

Mateta, who has seven goals in a season for Palace so far this year, stated that he was not thinking about his future ahead of Thursday’s Conference League game against AEK Larnaca. He has a contract until the summer of 2027.

Hearts facing ‘toughest challenge’ – McInnes

Hearts vs. Celtic in the Scottish Premiership

Location: Tynecastle Park, Edinburgh, on Sunday, October 26; 12:00 GMT

According to Derek McInnes, Hearts and Celtic will face “the toughest challenge” on Sunday when they square off against defending champions.

Regardless of the outcome in Edinburgh, McInnes’ team will remain top despite the fact that the teams are tied by five points.

Hearts are only down two points in the league this season, while Celtic lost their first Premiership game since May at Dundee on Sunday.

The toughest challenge lies ahead for us, according to McInnes.

“Celtic always present the toughest challenge,” says one reader. We are anticipating taking the test. We think we’re going to do it well.

    • 18 June 2023

In addition to winning the Scottish Cup and League Cup finals four times, McInnes’ Aberdeen side also placed second behind Celtic in the Premiership. In the Premier Sports Cup and the 2023-2024 season, he won against Brendan Rodgers’ side at Kilmarnock.

When playing Celtic, you must be on point and must play really well, McInnes said.

“I’ve played against Brendan’s teams frequently,” he said. Top players are everywhere in Celtic. Because of the demand, they invest the money in the squad they have, and they have a very good, top-level player.

“So we’ve got to work hard on Sunday to get a result. We’re just trying to be their toughest adversary, and I’m concentrating on making sure our performance gives us a chance. Whether my opponent is strong or weak, I can’t rely on them.

We think our performance is what will determine the outcome.

McInnes claimed that a victory in the top spot and an eight-point lead would be good shooting from us.

He continued, “We could only be two points clear.” We are aware that Sunday will be our final eight or nine games. I believe winning will give us great confidence and belief. We’ll just keep trying to believe and be confident in our work going forward if we don’t win. That won’t stop us.

Chess, monks & Nasa – Wembanyama’s unusual pre-season

Victor Wembanyama’s last appearance on an NBA court was the 2025 NBA All-Star Game in February.

The French forward, age 21, had deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder for the rest of the season and was declared out for the season three days later.

It can threaten both an athlete’s life and their career.

The San Antonio Spurs take on the Dallas Mavericks in their third game, which will be played on October 2024.

Wembanyama has been predicted to pick up from where he left off in February and is returning to the league as a transformed man.

Physically, he has experienced a growth spurt, reaching a height of 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 meters), which is one inch taller than the previous season. He’s believed to be closer to 7’5″ in some circles.

Wembanyama also has a listed weight of 16 t 11 lb (106. 6 kg), which has dropped two pounds since 2023, but he claimed to have gained “probably 30 pounds” while playing in the NBA.

Wembanyama himself and Spurs officials have downplayed the growth in size and power, but it has only increased the excitement surrounding the French star’s return.

Wembanyama’s popularity has remained high throughout an off-season that started two months earlier than expected due to injury.

Wembanyama made the most of his time off the court to become the NBA’s fastest player ever to amass a total of one billion social media likes and likes on posts across platforms.

Wembanyama went one step further by training with monks at a Shaolin Temple in Zhengzhou, China, for 10 days while athletes typically take vacations during their downtime.

His travels continued there. In Costa Rica and Tokyo, he was captured on video playing football with locals.

Wembanyama, who is also known as “the Alien,” also made a trip to Nasa’s Johnson Space Center, hosted a chess and basketball game on his own court in Le Chesnay, France, and met Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe.

Wembanyama is also a keen reader, frequently found absorbed in a book in the days leading up to a game.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson praised him for his “very intentional” efforts to improve both as a player and person.

It is constantly attempting to push himself to the limits of his comfort and discover new things.

Wembanyama was invited to a private training session with him in one of the sport’s most exclusive camps by the 1994 NBA MVP and 12-time NBA all-star Hakeem Olajuwon. LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kobe Bryant’s passing were previous guests.

On the way to Wednesday’s eagerly awaited return, he also trained with Kevin Garnett, a legend of the sport.

Wembanyama put his return to full basketball fitness above all else, thanks in part to Olajuwon and Garnett’s time, despite the fact that he claimed all of his extracurricular summer activities “deserved respect.”

No one has trained as much as I did this summer, the French singer said.

a chance to make up for time that was lost

Wembanyama’s absence caused him to miss the final 30 games of the Spurs’ season. Only 11 victories were won at that time.

He made more blocks than any other player for the second straight season despite missing 36 games overall last year.

The Spurs had a record of 23 wins and 29 losses prior to his season-ending injury, which gave them the least chance of reaching the post-season since 2021-22.

However, there are some promising young stars for the Spurs. Their roster combines Harrison Barnes, De’Aaron Fox, Kelly Olynyk, and Stephon Castle, who was the 2024-2019 NBA Rookie of the Year, with their youth. Dylan Harper, Carter Bryant, and Jeremy Sochan, the 2025 first-round draft pick, are just a few examples of the talent that has emerged.

Wembanyama’s in-game statistics, which included back-to-back victories over Indiana Pacers and Eastern Conference champions, remain at a level that shows promise for the new campaign.

He is one of the early contenders to win the league this year’s MVP. Although he may not be quite of his own time, he has unquestioned his talent.

Prince Harry’s red-hot fury over Palace’s Prince Andrew decision after Meghan promise

It took much longer for disgraced Prince Andrew to happen before Prince Harry and Meghan were quickly removed from the trappings of royal life when they stepped back as working royals.

As Prince Andrew is still rife with controversy, Prince Harry’s vile remarks about his disgraced uncle are returning to haunt him.

When Meghan first joined the Royal Family after marrying Harry, there was excitement in the air – with the Sussexes, along with Prince William and Princess Kate, swiftly dubbed the ‘Fab Four’.

Things weren’t quite as rosy as they could have appeared, though, behind closed doors. Meghan later revealed she had experienced mental health issues and even suicidal thoughts while Harry and Meghan were taking their public duties seriously during their official engagements.

Harry even admitted before their exit from the UK that he and his brother were going “different paths” in terms of how things were also going with some other senior royals. The news shocked everyone when they announced they wanted to stop performing their royal duties on a full-time basis.

With the late Queen and her advisors deciding there could be no ‘half-in, half-out’ option for the couple, many of the trappings of their royal life, including their police security, were swiftly taken away – standing in stark contrast to the disgraced Prince Andrew, who is once again under renewed scrutiny for the many scandals he has been embroiled in.

Meghan and Harry faced the same high “threat level” as the late Queen, Harry claimed in his memoir, and so it came as a total surprise to the Duke of Sussex when he received the news that their taxpayer-funded security was to be removed in 2020.

Borders were rapidly closing in Canada as the couple and their young son, Prince Archie, attempted to stop the spread of the Covid pandemic. The couple felt like “sitting ducks” because their location had been made public, but luckily aid arrived unexpectedly from them.

Tyler Perry, a billionaire, intervened and gave the Sussex family access to both his private security team and his mansion while they searched for a safe haven.

However, Harry revealed in his memoir, one of the main reasons he had assured Meghan that there was no way their security would be pulled was the case of his disgraced uncle, Prince Andrew.

Andrew announced on Friday that he will voluntarily give up the use of his duke title and his royal honours, after a 10-minute phone call with his “weary” elder brother, King Charles, but he has not been a working royal for six years.

The King’s errant younger brother stepped back from public duty in 2019, after he undertook a sit-down with Newsnight discussing allegations of sexual assault made against him by Virginia Giuffre, which he categorically denies, and his long-term friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Despite being mired in scandal, he still maintained his police security. Nobody had suggested removing Harry’s security, as he famously claimed in his memoir, “Despite being involved in an embarrassing scandal and accused of having sexually abused a young woman, and having been involved in a scandal,” according to Harry, who was clearly upset about the decision. Although there are many grievances against us, none were sexually repressed.

The late Queen continued to pay his private security bill even though it wasn’t until 2022, according to reports.
