Ronaldo breaks unique record but Al Nassr lose Saudi Super Cup to Al-Ahli

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 100 competitive goals for four different clubs, though Al Nassr lost to Al-Ahli in a penalty shootout after the Saudi Super Cup final ended 2-2.

The first half strike at Hong Kong Stadium on Saturday took the 40-year-old to his century for the Saudi Arabian club, which he joined in December 2022.

It adds to his 450 goals for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United and 101 for Juventus and moves Ronaldo ahead of the three players who had scored 100 times for three clubs: Isidro Langara, who played in Spain from 1930 to 1948, as well as Brazilian stars Romario and Neymar.

Ronaldo, who has yet to win a major trophy in Saudi Arabia, is also the leading international goalscorer with 138 goals for Portugal.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner put Al Nassr ahead after 41 minutes with a penalty, though Franck Kessie quickly equalised for Al-Ahli.

With seven minutes remaining, Marcelo Brozovic restored Al Nassr’s lead, but there was still time for Brazilian defender Ibanez to head home a corner and take the game into a penalty shootout.

Ronaldo scored once more from the spot, but his teammate Abdullah al-Khaibari did not, and Al-Ahli won 5-3 to lift the first trophy of the Saudi Arabian season.

The Last Dinner Party boycott Victorious Festival in solidarity with The Mary Wallopers

The Last Dinner Party have pulled out of Victorious Festival in solidarity with The Mary Wallopers after the latter’s set was cut short due to them displaying a Palestinian flag

The Last Dinner Party have pulled out of Victorious Festival hours before their set after The Mary Wallopers’ set was cut short due to their pro-Palestine message. On August 22, Irish band The Mary Wallopers’ set was stopped only a few moments into their first song after there a dispute over their displaying the Palestinian flag on stage.

In a statement, they wrote: “Yesterday, a famine was declared in Gaza, where at least 65 people were killed by Israeli attacks, all the while Israel pushed ahead with plans to split the West Bank in two. These are the important facts about yesterday. We are uploading this video so everybody can see @victoriousfestival cut our gig short for having a Palestinian flag on stage.

“The festival have released a misleading statement to the press claiming they cut our sound because of a discriminatory chant and not the band’s call to Free Palestine. Our video clearly shows a Victorious crew member coming on stage, interfering with our show, removing the flag from the stage and then the sound being cut following a chant of “Free Palestine”. The same crew member is later heard in the video saying “you aren’t playing until the flag is removed”.

“We completely reject Victorious’ portrayal of today’s events and request that they retract their statement immediately. We know this is getting some attention and we don’t want another distraction which takes attention away from the genocide that is happening in Palestine. FREE PALESTINE.”

Their post was in response to the festival’s initial statement, which the band called “misleading”. The festival wrote that it was the “artist’s decision to stop the song”, claiming the sound was only cut “after the band used a chant which is widely understood to have a discriminatory context.” The festival also claimed the band had warning of their no-flags policy.

In a newer post, Victorious said they ‘didn’t handle the explanation of our policies sensitively or far enough in advance to allow a sensible conclusion to be reached’ before they apologised to everyone concerned.

They added: “We accept that, although mics remained live for longer, sound for The Mary Wallopers’ audience was cut as described in the band’s video, and that comments after that were not audible to the public. We are sorry that this situation has come about and will be making a substantial donation to humanitarian relief efforts for the Palestinian people.”

In solidarity with The Mary Wallopers, The Last Dinner Party announced they were ‘boycotting’ the festival as they pulled out of their performance. They hit out at the festival’s “political censorship” as they added: “As Gazans are deliberately plunged into catastrophic famine after two years of escalating violence, it is urgent and obvious that artists use their platform to draw attention to the cause.

“To see an attempt to direct attention away from the genocide in order to maintain an apolitical image is immensely disappointing.”

The Brit Award-winning band said they’ve used their concerts to urge their fans to donate “even a drink’s worth of money to Medical Aid for Palestinians, and today we urge you more than ever to do the same.”

In response to The Last Dinner Party pulling out, the festival said they ‘regret not being able to reach a positive conclusion with them’, adding they ‘respect their decision and their ongoing support for Palestinian humanitarian causes’. They also shared a donation link to Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Getdown Services said that considered pulling out of the festival, but have decided to play and donate their entire fee to War Child, before deeming the festival “spineless, pathetic idiots.”

Another band, Cliffords, also pulled out of the festival as they shared a statement on social media. Along with a picture of them holding up a Palestinian flag, they wrote: “Following the ongoing genocide and in light of the recent declaration of famine, we refuse to play if we are to be censored for showing our support to the people of Palestine. We were not made aware of a “no flag” policy when we agreed to play Victorious, and while we understand their predicament, we have no intention of playing if this is how artists are treated for speaking out against genocide.”

The Academic have also withdrawn from Victorious, writing on social media: “We’ve taken the decision to pull out of Victorious Festival. We can’t in good conscience stand up and play at a festival that silences free speech and the right to express your views. We stand in solidarity with the other Irish acts here this weekend. FREE PALESTINE.”

Strictly star Vicky Pattison ‘repulses’ fans after controversial act with her dog

Former Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison has shocked her fans by getting too close to one of her dogs – leading some to brand the reality star ‘disgusting” for her actions

Vicky Pattison has repulsed some of her fans by allowing her dog to lick her lips and face. The reality star provoked a backlash while promoting a dog food brand on social media.

The 37-year-old former Geordie Shore star featured in a short video clip for a brand called Butternut Box. Sitting on a platform, Vicky was chatting to a spokesperson for the brand while joined by her black Labrador.

The TV star and former I’m A Celeb winner is the proud owner of two dogs, named Max and Milo, who she adopted with her husband, Ercan Ramadan. But fans felt Vicky went too far when she allowed her pet to lick inside her mouth.

While chatting to her co-star in the video clip, Vicky opened her mouth wide while her dog enthusiastically licked around and inside her chops. Called out immediately, Vicky was told she was “gammy” – and she sheepishly agreed, saying: “I know. I’m so sorry. The thing is, I do it too… it makes them happy.”

Fans were not happy, however, with many accusing the star of going too far. One repulsed followers reacted to the post, writing: “I love my dogs like my kids but nooooooo I couldn’t.”

And another typed: “This is so disgusting. Then you kiss your partner and kids after that, spreading bacteria.” TV fans will soon see Vicky in a new light – as a contestant on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing this winter.

She is among the 15 stars taking part in the glitzy reality contest – with actress Alex Kingston and TV presenter Ross King among others taking part.

Speaking to 2023 contestant Angela Scanlon, Vicky said in an episode of the podcast Get A Grip that she is not concerned for the alleged Strictly curse – signing up to the show a year after getting married to The Only Way Is Essex star Ercan.

She said: “No, so obviously I’m newly married, and the press are just, like, wild, aren’t they? I feel like the whole, like, chemistry between couples can easily be, like, misrepresented.”

She added: “For that side of things, I would absolutely really love a gay partner, just because I don’t want any of the rumours. But, like, you can’t go around requesting things like that.”

Vicky has proudly discussed her marriage to Ercan, sharing photos from their big day after they tied-the-knot in Marylebone Town Hall in London. She took to Instagram, saying: “I have honestly never felt happiness like it – the most special day of our lives.”

Vicky’s involvement in Strictly 2025 comes after she suffered a trapped nerve after taking part in a charity trek in Iceland. And earlier this week, a source shared concerns that this could come back to end the MTV star’s Strictly dreams.

The source told The Mirror: “She was desperately worried that this wasn’t only not going to go away but that it could get worse.”

They add: “Vicky isn’t a complainer, so when she says something feels bad, she means it. But she’s also a really tough person and has already shown that she can cope with pretty much anything – one thing she’s not, is a quitter. She needs to make sure she looks after herself though, that will be the most important thing.”

They went on to say, “Strictly has been the number one show on her wish list for years, especially after she went to watch her bestie Pete [Wicks] on it last year. This would be her time to shine and she knows that second chances don’t come around often.”

Vicky previously told her fans on Instagram all about her agonising condition. She explained: “It happens mostly in the winter when I’m cold and all hunched over and tight. “It obviously happened in the trek last week. And I’m just feeling it now because my body has relaxed for the first time in a week. But I can barely bloody move.”

Emma Corrin films with Jack Lowden in first-look at new Pride and Prejudice

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any actress playing Elizabeth Bennet must risk catching a cold in a frock on a blustery moor. Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana in The Crown, looks fitting as the spirited sister in this first look at Netflix’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice.

Jack Lowden, star of Slow Horses, plays love interest Mr Darcy, following Colin Firth on the BBC in 1995 and Matthew Macfadyen in the 2005 film. The pair had to battle the elements as they filmed scenes for the upcoming series in the Peak District.

Netflix is hoping the six-parter, written by best-selling author Dolly Alderton, will bewitch fans of the classic 1813 novel. Olivia Colman also stars in the latest adaptation, alongside an impressive line-up.

Non-binary Emma, 29, called it “a once-in-a-lifetime role.” They said: “To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

In the Jane Austen novel, Elizabeth and her four sisters face pressure to marry rich. Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman will play Elizabeth’s pushy mother, Mrs Bennet.

In the 1995 telly version, Colin Firth played Mr Darcy and Jennifer Ehle was Elizabeth. Then there was the 2005 movie starring Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightly in the lead roles, which put its own spin on the story.

Netflix’s latest offering promises to stay true to the book. Writer Dolly said: “Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.

“The book is a gift to adapt — packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm. In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship, and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice.

“With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”

Rufus Sewell, who last year played Prince Andrew in Scoop, will star as the ever-patient Mr Bennet, while Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw has landed the role of Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Stath Lets Flats favourite Jamie Demetriou plays the obsequious Mr Collins, while Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders) takes the role of Mr Bingley – the love match for eldest Bennet sister Jane, who is played by Freya Mavor.

Heartstopper’s Rhea Norwood takes the role of headstrong Bennet sister Lydia while Louis Partridge is set to play the handsome but hopeless Mr Wickham.

Trump administration seeks to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda

Immigration officials in the United States say they intend to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, according to a court filing, in what the man’s legal team describes as an act of “vindictiveness” by US President Donald Trump’s administration.

The court filing on Saturday said the idea of sending Abrego Garcia to Uganda came after he declined an offer to be deported to Costa Rica in exchange for remaining in jail and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges.

He has pleaded not guilty and asked the judge to dismiss the case, claiming that it is an attempt to punish him for challenging his deportation from the US to El Salvador earlier this year.

Abrego Garcia’s case has become a flashpoint in Trump’s hardline, anti-immigration agenda after the Salvadoran national was mistakenly deported in March.

Facing a court order, the Trump administration brought him back to the US in June, only to detain him on human smuggling charges.

The Costa Rica offer came late on Thursday, after it was clear that Abrego Garcia would likely be released from a Tennessee jail the following day.

Abrego Garcia declined to extend his stay in jail and was released on Friday to await trial in Maryland with his family.

Later that day, the US Department of Homeland Security notified his lawyers that he would be deported to Uganda and should report to immigration authorities on Monday.

“The government immediately responded to Mr Abrego’s release with outrage,” Saturday’s filing by Abrego Garcia’s lawyers reads.

“Despite having requested and received assurances from the government of Costa Rica that Mr Abrego would be accepted there, within minutes of his release from pretrial custody, an ICE representative informed Mr Abrego’s counsel that the government intended to deport Mr Abrego to Uganda and ordered him to report to ICE’s Baltimore Field Office Monday morning.”

The filing also accuses US officials of “using their collective powers to force Mr Abrego to choose between a guilty plea followed by relative safety, or rendition to Uganda, where his safety and liberty would be under threat”.

“It is difficult to imagine a path the government could have taken that would have better emphasized its vindictiveness,” it says.

Although Abrego Garcia was deemed eligible for pretrial release, he had remained in jail at the request of his lawyers, who feared the Trump administration could try to immediately deport him again if he were freed.

Those fears were somewhat allayed by a recent ruling in a separate case in Maryland, which requires immigration officials to allow Abrego Garcia time to mount a defence.

Questions on due process

Abrego Garcia had been living in the US under protected legal status since 2019, when a judge ruled he should not be deported because he could be harmed in his home country.

He then became one of more than 200 people sent to El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison as part of Trump’s crackdown on migrants and asylum seekers in the US.

But Department of Justice lawyers admitted that the Salvadoran citizen had been wrongly deported due to an “administrative error”.

Abrego Garcia – who denies any wrongdoing – now stands accused of involvement in smuggling undocumented migrants from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and other countries into the US between 2016 and earlier this year.

His trial in his human smuggling case is set to begin in January 2027.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a lawyer at the American Immigration Council, said in a social media post on Saturday that “no matter what you think about Mr Abrego Garcia, if you believe in due process, you should be infuriated” by the effort to send him to Uganda.

“The Trump admin is threatening to dump him in Africa as punishment for not pleading guilty to criminal charges they brought to avoid complying with a court order,” Reichlin-Melnick wrote on X.

The Trump administration has defended its policies, saying the US president was elected on a promise to carry out the “largest deportation operation” in the country’s history.

But Washington’s push to deport people has drawn widespread criticism, with removals to third countries, in particular, fuelling fears that those being sent abroad could face human rights abuses and other dangers.
