Tom Cruise To Receive Honorary Oscar In Career First

Tom Cruise, a Hollywood veteran, will receive an honorary Oscar before the 2026 Academy Awards, according to the organisers on Tuesday.

Along with choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas, Cruise was chosen to receive a statuette for his contributions to film.

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which Dolly Parton won for her decades-long humanitarian work, will also be presented at the Academy’s 16th Governors Awards ceremony in November.

Despite achieving world notoriety for his roles in the action movies “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun,” Cruise, 62, has received four Oscar nominations but has never received the honorable distinction.

The Academy said in a statement that Tom Cruise’s extraordinary dedication to the film industry, the theater, and the stunt industry has inspired everyone.

It praised him as “one of the most admired and highest-grossing actors of all time” and praised his commitment to performing all of his own stunts.

Allen, 75, was honored for her five-decade career, which included working on films like the 1995 rom-comedy “Forget Paris” and choreographing the Academy Awards ceremony seven times.

Davido Releases ‘With You’ Video, Pays Homage To Bright Chimezie Who Inspired the Track

The music video for Davido’s chart-topping collaboration with Omah Lay, With You, features a surprise cameo from highlife legend Bright Chimezie, whose work served as the song’s inspiration.

The With You video, which was shot in Lagos and directed by Dammy Twitch, debuted on Monday and has already received over one million views in less than 24 hours.

Scenes of young revelry, with Davido and Omah Lay at the center of a celebratory, party-like setting, are featured in Polar Films Production’s production.

Chimezie dances his signature moves while wearing a Hamlet-style cap and a white bead necklace at the beginning of the video, which contradicts an earlier viral clip where he acknowledged Davido’s rendition of his song “Because of English.”

A brief appearance is also made by Cubana Chief Priest.

The artistic tribute honors its high-life roots. Chimezie mimics Davido’s dance steps in a moving scene, which many viewers claim best embodies the spirit of artistic integrity and cultural continuity.

One of the standout tracks from the highlife veteran’s eponymous 2018 album is Chimezie’s “With You,” which gives thematic and rhythmic inspiration to the song.

The song addresses a child’s punishment for not speaking English and raises further issues of linguistic marginalization.

In a now-viral FaceTime conversation a few weeks before their physical meeting, Davido said, “I used inspiration from your song, Because of English, for the most recent hit I just did with Omah Lay.” It’s “trending everywhere, the entire world”

As Davido expressed his gratitude to him in Lagos, Chimezie reacted, “Okay, that would be wonderful, that would be nice,” with Chimezie clearly elated.

The two artists eventually met on May 19 in Lagos, where they physically connected—a symbolic fusion of two generations of Nigerian music.

Many have attributed the renewed interest in Davido’s public tribute to Chimezie’s agreement to Sony Music Publishing West Africa.

Dikeh Dikeh, a content creator whose comic reenactments of Chimezie’s reaction to Davido’s song also went viral in May, further boosting the legend’s relevance among Gen Z audiences, recently heightened the interest in the legend.

On his fifth studio album, 5ive, Davido includes his song “With You.” It is one of 17 tracks.

The singer is also getting ready for his July 5ive Alive tour.

UN fact-finding mission says Sudan conflict escalating, aid weaponised

The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has warned that the use of heavy weapons in densely populated areas has become more prevalent as a result of the country’s civil war, with disastrous consequences for civilians.

The Sudanese conflict is still ongoing, according to Mohamed Chande Othman, the head of the UN Human Rights Council, on Tuesday.

“Human suffering is getting worse every day. An ever-deadlier crisis is being fueled by the fragmentation of government, the militarization of society, and the involvement of foreign actors.

According to UN data, the brutal conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in April 2023, which left tens of thousands of civilians dead and more than 13 million people displaced.

Sudan is currently experiencing the “worst humanitarian crisis” according to a previous UN statement.

According to the mission, both sides increased the use of heavy weapons in densely populated areas. Six civilians were killed in a May drone strike by an RSF-led attack on Obeid International Hospital in North Kordofan, and at least 15 were killed earlier this month by an SAF bombing in Al Koma.

According to the group, the SAF, which imposed bureaucratic restrictions, and the RSF, which looted convoys and blocked aid, were also using aid.

Additionally, the mission found that there is a significant rise in sexual and gender-based violence, most recently in RSF-controlled displacement camps, including gang rape, abduction, sexual slavery, and forced marriage.

What started out as a political and security crisis, according to Mona Rishmawi, a member of the fact-finding mission, has turned into “a grave human rights and protection emergency, marked by international crimes that stain all involved.”

She said, “It is unconscionable that this devastating war is now entering its third year with no sign of end.”

Since Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s long-time leader, was ousted in 2019 following months of anti-government protests, the country has experienced growing instability.

Abdalla Hamdok, the prime minister’s resignation in early 2022 was the result of the Sudanese military’s coup attempt in October of that year.

After the coup, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the army chief of Sudan, and his rival Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF’s leader, shared power, but in April 2023, they started fighting for state and resources.

The Sudanese Army accused Khalifa Haftar’s forces of attacking Sudanese border posts last week, marking the first time it had ever charged its neighbor in the northwestern region with directly engaging in civil war.

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz and British No. 1 Jack Draper, who defeated American Jenson Brooksby, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the last 16 at Queen’s, made it easy for the Brits.

Spanish world number two Alcaraz was well pushed by tenacious loser Adam Walton, who ultimately won 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

In a second meeting this year, Draper defeated Brooksby, 24, in Indian Wells in March.

In the first set, Draper had to go 4-1 up again, but this time, he broke Brooksby’s serve in the seventh game before taking the double break to tie the set.

When Draper and Brooksby entered the Andy Murray Arena, it was once more sweltering, and the weather was 26C. However, adding a gentle breeze would have made things more palatable for the players.

However, Draper was hesitant to spend too much time on the court.

After a pause in play for a medical issue in the stands, he broke Brooksby for a second break and won the game.

After finishing his television series, Draper will next face Australian Alexei Popyrin for a spot in the quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old hopes to win at Queen’s Club in the same way Murray did. This year, Murray won the venue’s center court in honor of his five-time singles title.

Draper made a joke about playing in the Andy Murray Arena, saying, “Can’t get rid of this guy. “Andy is a fantastic guy, a person I admire a lot, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him,” he said.

I’m terribly missing him on the tour. Thank you, Andy, this court deserves to be named in your honor.

Billy Harris, Draper’s compatriot, lost to Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6-1, 3 3-6, 6-4, in the quarter-finals last year.

Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, both of whom were in other theaters on Tuesday, both experienced shocks.

Third seed Fritz won the Stuttgart Open, but Corentin Moutet of France’s qualifier lost to him 7-6 (9-7) 7-5. Lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech of France stunned sixth seed Shelton 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-4)

After defeating Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina 7-6 (8-6) 6-4, Rinderknech will next face Reilly Opelka of the United States.

The signs of rust were present in this match, which included a two-year absence due to injury and suspension after missing three anti-doping tests. Brooksby only made a second professional appearance in January.

However, Draper did a remarkable job, making some errors in the first few games and putting on a commanding display that suggests he can succeed.

After getting his first break, Draper quickly avoided injury by crashing into the advertising rigs on his first set point, which he did, before sealing it on the third.

After being unsurprisingly defeated by Alexander Bublik in the French Open fourth round, he received the result he needed on his return to competitive action. He only lost four games overall.

Following the game, Draper revealed that he had fallen during Queen’s practice and was suffering from an injury scare.

He said, “I was training on the courts here, and I fell incredibly hard.”

Alcaraz defeats Walton with all his might

Top seed Alcaraz, a former champion at Queen’s, arrived on the court after Draper’s victory after having only just learned about his opening-round opponent.

The former world number one was scheduled to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, but he withdrew due to illness on Tuesday, so acquiescent loser Walton was called up for his main-draw debut.

Alcaraz’s inability to prepare for the player he would encounter, combined with Walton’s desire to impress, may have contributed to a surprisingly close first set of games.

Alcaraz’ lengthy seventh game was finally won by Walton when the Australian fired a shot into the net to give the Spaniard the break he needed.

Alcaraz capitalized on Walton’s lack of confidence to earn a second break and win the opener.

Walton bounced back from that disappointment and led Alcaraz in the second set flawlessly, but the five-time Grand Slam champion saved two set points before winning the tie-break.

Alcaraz took a break in Ibiza between the two tournaments, winning his first match since his epic five-set triumph over Jannik Sinner in the French Open final earlier this month.
