Why Israel wants US bunker busters to hit Iran’s Fordow nuclear site

In light of the growing hostilities between Israel and Iran, US President Donald Trump claims he is still considering options for military action.

Trump stated on Wednesday that Iran’s South Lawn would be “big” and that the next week will be “big”. He did, however, warn them when they reached out to him that “it’s very late to be talking.”

The US’s 30-pound (13, 000 kg) bunker buster bomb, which is thought to be the most powerful weapon ever built and carved deep into a mountain, is the only one that can demolish Tehran’s nuclear-armed Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant.

The only nation with these bombs, which B-2 bombers can deliver, is the United States. It would change a lot if it were deployed against Iran, moving away from intercepting missiles on Israel’s behalf and conducting active offensive strikes there.

Bunker bombs: what are they?

Bombs that can’t be used with conventional bombs generally serve as “bunker busters.”

The GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator is the US military’s most potent bunker buster. This precision-guided bomb is made of high-strength steel and can be penetrating up to 200 feet (61 meters) underground before exploding, weighing about 30 000 pounds (13.6 kg), including a 2, 700 kg (6, 000 kg) warhead.

The B-2 Spirit, a stealth bomber from the US, can carry two bunker buster bombs simultaneously, making it the only aircraft currently used to launch the GBU-57. Multiple bombs can be dropped simultaneously, either by the same aircraft or by several, allowing each strike to penetrate deeper, boosting the impact overall.

Israeli-made bunker busters, such as the GBU-28 and BLU-109, are typically dropped from fighter jets like the F-15. However, these weapons can’t penetrate deep enough to reach fortified sites like Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility because of their much shorter penetration range. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah reportedly perished in Beirut’s underground headquarters using several BLU-109 bombs in 2024.

How far away is Iran’s nuclear facility, Fordow?

To withstand air strikes and bunker buster attacks, Iran’s Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, which is located about 95 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Tehran, is constructed underground, reportedly up to 80 to 90 meters (260 to 300 feet) underground.

The Fordow facility’s construction is thought to have started in 2006 or so, and it went into operation in 2009, the same year Iran acknowledged it.

Iran agreed to stop enriching Fordow and turn the site into a research center under the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, known as the JCPOA. Iran resumed uranium enrichment at the facility after the US withdrew from it in 2018. Iran has argued that its nuclear program is intended for civilian purposes.

Iranian and Russian surface-to-air missile systems reportedly defend Fordow, despite Israel’s ongoing strikes having already targeted those defenses.

The campaign is being portrayed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a mission to end Iran’s missile and nuclear arsenal, which they call an existential threat. Fordow is a significant target, according to officials.

Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, said in an interview with Fox News, “This entire operation really has to be finished with the elimination of Fordow.”

Other nuclear facilities are the targets.

The above-ground portion of Iran’s largest nuclear site, Natanz, is thought to have been destroyed by Israel.

The resulting power loss may have also been harmful to the facility’s underground enrichment halls, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The extent of Natanz’s damage is apparent in both before and after satellite imagery.

The central Iranian Isfahan enrichment facility has also been damaged by Israeli attacks.

Potential chemical and nuclear contamination

The damaged Natanz site may lead to both radiological and chemical contamination, according to Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, on Monday.

Grossi stated at a Vienna-based IAEA meeting that radiation levels are still acceptable when traveling through Iran’s nuclear sites Natanz and Isfahan, both of which were directly affected by Israeli bombings. He did point out that a radiological release is more likely as a result of the military’s continued escalation.

With a population of roughly 1.4 million and a significant religious and political center, Fordow is located about 32 kilometers (20 miles) south of the city of Qom, Iran’s seventh-largest city.

US, High Court Sign MoU To Strengthen Terrorism Financing In Nigeria

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the US Embassy Abuja and its implementing partner, the National Centre for State Courts (NCSC), aimed at enhancing the capacity of relevant justice sector stakeholders to resolve cases involving terrorism financing, among others.

The “U.S. FUNDED PROGRAM TO STRENGTHEN NIGERIA’S CAPACITY TO INVESTIGATE, PROSECUTE, DEFEND, AND ADJUDICATE TERRORISM AND ATROCITY CASES” is officially launched in Nigeria with the signing of the MOU at the FHC headquarters.

According to NCSC Nigeria, the program aims to “strengthen the capacity of Nigeria’s judicial sector to investigate, prosecute, defend, and adjudicate terrorism, terrorism financing, atrocity crimes, war crimes, and crimes against humanity,” as well as ensure compliance with the rule of law and international best practices.

The program’s goal is to provide Nigerian justice institutions with the tools and expertise needed to handle and resolve complex terrorism and atrocity cases effectively and ethically through targeted training, stakeholder engagements, and technical assistance.

Enhancing case management and courtroom procedures in Nigeria are key priorities.

Financing of Terrorism

The project will provide participants with “the necessary tools to handle the complexities of terrorism, terrorist financing, and atrocity crimes,” according to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat M. Kereke-Ekun, in her remarks at the event.

The CJN, who was represented by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba of the Supreme Court, made it clear that the program will also improve inter-agency coordination and case management procedures, making sure that Nigeria’s justice delivery systems are both effective and credible.

The NCSC has been a reliable and reliable partner in the reform of the Nigerian judiciary for more than 20 years. It has significantly assisted in the creation of a custom case management system that is based on our local procedures and works closely with the National Judicial Council.

It has also advocated for court automation, supported digital tools, provided crucial training, and promoted institutional transparency through court monitoring initiatives, “Garba said, adding that this project has renewed energy and put a sharpened focus on one of the most pressing issues of our time.

Justice Tsoho, on his part, expressed deep gratitude to the court’s international partners, who have shown unwavering support for Nigeria’s justice system.

He continued, noting that the current training program has been implemented because of their unmatched financial and technical support.

This collaboration underscores the widespread scope of the fight against terrorism and atrocity crimes, and underscores the idea that no one country can solve these problems alone, he added.

INL Director Candace Spradley, the representative of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, stated that the project represents an act of justice and accountability.

Spradley assured that interested parties could help make the United States, Nigeria, and other countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous by facilitating prosecutions of terrorism and atrocities.

What Information You Need to Know

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) added South Africa and Nigeria to its grey list on February 24, 2024, with this development coming just months later.
According to the task force, nations on the grey list need to intensify their efforts to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.

According to the FATF, being listed on the grey list indicates that the country has a commitment to address identified strategic gaps within agreed time limits.

The FATF concentrates on preventing money laundering and terrorism financing as an intergovernmental policy-making body.

‘I watched 28 Days Later at the cinema – one major flaw distracted me’

I went to my local Odeon to watch the original film, 28 Days Later, before the upcoming release of the film. However, I was unable to take my eyes off of one major flaw.

As I watched the first episode of the zombie series, one thing got in the way of me.

With 28 Years Later set to land in cinemas on June 20, I decided to catch up on what had happened in the previous films, so I’d be perfectly up to date and ready for the action.

28 Years Later will see Marvel’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Killing Eve alum Jodie Comer star as survivors living in the UK almost three decades after the rage virus took over, resulting in terrifying attacks from the infected – aka zombies. This apocalyptic thriller will show Comer and Taylor Johnson find ways to survive in their respective groups as they discover a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.

But before 28 Years Later, there were two films that showed the effects of the rage virus on the UK. In 2002, the first film in the series, 28 Days Later was released and starred Peaky Blinders’ Cillian Murphy and Bond girl Naomie Harris. It showed the first month of survival following the accidental release of the highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus.

The movie was a huge success, received an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Stylus Magazine named it the second-best zombie film of all time in 2007.

The first sequel, 28 Weeks Later, stars Jeremy Renner and Rose Byrne as Brits attempt to flee the country after believing the virus has vanished, follows. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t.

When I first saw the trailer for 28 Years Later, I was immediately hooked as a huge fan of the zombie genre. I’d heard about the prequels, but I couldn’t watch them because they weren’t accessible through streaming services. I joined my local Odeon cinema to watch the 2002 film 28 Days Later, which was thankfully starting to promote reruns.

The movie started to play with a cup of popcorn on hand, a reclined seat, and trailers watching. But I had to ask my partner if this was a joke a moment later. The film’s first scene takes place in a dimly lit room as an unusually aggressive chimpanzee lab is invaded by animal rights activists.

I was unable to see anything because the movie looked so pixelated, not because the scene was dark. I realized that since the 2002 release of the movie, cinema hasn’t advanced as much as it has today.

By completing the survey below, help us make our content better. We’d like to hear from you.

For someone so accustomed to watching movies in IMAX or super HD, watching 28 Days Later on the big screen was a major culture shock because it allowed me to see every speck in an actor’s face. How much has cinema changed in 25 years, I was right away shocked.

Agian, Gunmen Attack Senator Natasha’s Family House

Gunmen have once more attacked Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s family home in Ihima, in the state’s Okehi Local Government Area, in the wake of the governor’s election.

Community vigilantes and concerned youths who prevented the attackers from vandalizing the house during the attack on Tuesday allegedly repelled them. The lawmaker’s home was previously attacked in April.

In connection with the attack, one suspect was taken to the scene.

The suspect admitted to the crime and that the recent attack was the third time the lawmaker’s family home had been attacked, according to sources.

After a cutlass and charms were recovered from the suspect, the suspect was reportedly handed over to the police for further questioning while other suspects with dangerous weapons were still at large.

Read more about Natasha’s plea of not guilty to a charge of defamation and receives 50 million dollars in bail.

The senator’s press release acknowledged the incident, saying, “We appeal to the public to keep things calm and steadfast in the pursuit of justice.”

“Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s unwavering support for her constituents and her honest representation should not be used as a weapon,” she said.

Southampton owner suggests VAR cost Martin his job as manager

Since becoming owner of Southampton, Dragan Solak has gone through two relegations, one promotion, and now five different permanent managers.

Solak, however, claimed in a detailed interview that he had “no plans” to sell the club and that Russell Martin “would definitely” still be the manager if the video assistant referee (VAR) had not “taken eight points” off the team.

In early 2022, Sport Republic, a 60-year-old Serbian business, bought a majority stake in the Saints.

However, only three and a half years later, in one of Solak’s few media interviews, has he made his first public appearance with BBC Sport.

When the clock struck a year ago, Southampton was still celebrating after the heartfelt Championship play-off victory over Leeds United at Wembley to advance to the Premier League.

However, the subsequent campaign had a negative impact on the club’s reputation because they were forced to return to the bottom after a season-record number of defeats.

“We have had some really great highs and enjoyable moments, but we also have devastating and sad periods,” Solak told BBC Radio Solent.

“But the good news is that all of this is just helping to grow my love, respect, and loyalty to Southampton.”

With the appointment of Will Still, Ralph Hasenhuttl, Nathan Jones, Russell Martin, and Ivan Juric will become Solak’s fifth permanent head coach.

Saints struggled to transition from the Championship to England’s top flight last season, which was hindered by Jason Wilcox, the director of football, leaving for Manchester United even before they were promoted.

Solak claimed that Saints “reluctantly” allowed Wilcox to leave after only six months in the position.

“I really liked working with Jason while he was here, but I now understand that if you get a call from Manchester United, you go,” Solak continued.

No selling plans, but potential market potential for investors

Rasmus Ankersen and Henrik Kraft founded Sport Republic, a British sports investment company, in which Solak is the lead investor.

Additionally, they play for West African side FC Mali Coura, Goztepe in Turkey, Valenciennes in France, and Valenciennes in France.

Solak refuted reports that suggested he might be considering selling Southampton.

Solak stated, “I never intended to sell the club.” We have a number of very exciting projects in the works.

I might invite some partners to join me if and when we are promoted to the Premier League because I believe there will be more [investment]needed.

Martin, the sacks Saints boss, was “unlucky.”

Solak claimed that Southampton’s former head coach Russell Martin was “unlucky” to be fired despite being “rooted to the bottom of the table” at the time in his extensive interview.

The Scot had won just one game and lost 13 games before losing to Saints in the Premier League.

After six months in charge, Martin, 39, has been ascended to the position of Rangers’ head coach.

Without bad luck, Solak believes he could have remained in charge of St. Mary’s.

In a setting like the Premier League, Solak said, “I really believe he was completely, fundamentally behind his idea of football,” Solak said. “That is not easy in a way like that.

“But to give him credit, we were quite unlucky,” Russell’s team said, “I don’t even know how to characterize some of the VAR decisions that we made,” but in my opinion VAR took eight points.

I believe he would probably lead the team the entire season if he had those eight more points in December.

Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton were the only three teams that came up last season, but all three of them went straight back and didn’t really put up much of a fight.

Bottom Saints finished 26 points adrift of safety, but the gap between the 17th and 18th positions was 13 points.

According to Solak, “the difference is too big, that’s for sure.”

The Championship and the Premier League will both suffer in the future unless the gap is narrowed in some way, according to the statement.

Still considered a very smart man by the new head coach?

Southampton boss Will Still poses for a photo Getty Images

Will Still, a former manager of Lens, made his first appearance as manager in English football in May as Saints’ new head coach after departing from Ligue 1.

When Reims, a Ligue 1 club, appointed him as the youngest coach in Europe’s top five leagues at the age of 30, in October 2022, he was 30 years old.

I spent some time with him, and I must admit that he is undoubtedly a very intelligent person, Solak said.

He believes it’s a wise decision for him to join a top-tier team in France because he believes his place in British football should be.

Saints under Solak so far

The south coast club’s ownership by previous owners Gao Jisheng and Hasenhuttl was acquired in the early 2022 season by Solak and Sport Republic.

In the Premier League, Saints finished comfortably safe in 15th place with 40 points despite a disappointing season that ended with four straight defeats.

However, Solak’s board decided to leave the St Mary’s for the following campaign after taking just 12 points out of 14 games.

Following Selles’ brief but brief interim caretaker position, they signed Luton manager Nathan Jones to a three-and-a-half-year contract.

After only 95 days in charge, Jones was sacked as the club’s shortest-serving manager, losing nine of his 14 games.

By that time, Saints were on the verge of relegation to the Championship, and Fulham’s home defeat in May sealed their fate.

The team quickly established itself as a top Championship side despite losing some key players in the first half of the following season.

Saints won the play-off spot and advanced to the final, beating Leeds at Wembley, after Martin’s possession-based football had gained notoriety.

However, Saints struggled even more, sacking Martin in December after Tottenham blew them up by five points to take safety.
