CBS cancels Colbert’s Late Show amid pending Paramount-Skydance merger

In May 2026, Stephen Colbert, the president of the United States, approved of the comedian’s decision to stop airing The Late Show.

The show’s cancellation was announced by CBS on Thursday in preparation for a looming merger between its parent company Paramount and Skydance Media.

The comedian also made the comment after Paramount apologized for their $ 16 million settlement with Trump. Trump claimed in a lawsuit that Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic challenger, and CBS’s flagship news program, 60 Minutes, had a doctored interview during the presidential campaign in 2024.

Due to the pending merger, which requires approval from the Department of Justice and is valued at $8 billion, Colbert, a long-time critic of the president, described the decision to settle as “a big fat bribe.”

The president wrote in a post on Truth Social, which read, “I absolutely love that Colbert was fired.”

Before going after Colbert’s other two rivals Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, saying they are next, without any supporting evidence, he continued, “His talent was even less than his ratings”.

Contrary to what the president claims, Colbert is performing well, earning 2.42 million viewers in the second quarter of 2025, making his show the highest rated late-night program in the industry.

The long-running late-night series, which replaced Pat Sajak on television in 1993 and was first hosted by David Letterman, was also terminated by the cancellation.

financial strains

“This is purely a financial choice against a challenging late-night setting.” According to a statement from CBS to Al Jazeera, the show’s performance, content, or other issues happening at Paramount are unrelated.

After a two-year run, CBS previously ended its late-night program After Midnight, which was hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson.

Experts think that assertion has merit.

The reality is that the late-night entertainment industry does not have any viable alternatives to the exorbitant salaries this talent earns and the costs associated with these productions. In the end, late-night production will largely be consumed on YouTube, according to Andrew Rosen, the founder of the media strategy firm Parqor.

According to reports from the outlet Puck, the show reportedly costs $100 million to produce each year and loses about $40 million in revenue.

Rosen continued, citing Paramount’s efforts to cut costs as it focuses on merging with Skydance, saying, “They’ve just maxed out the model for as long as they can and for a variety of reasons that I think probably have more to do with the economics of the merger with Skydance than they do with Trump.”

As of 1 p.m. in New York (17:00 GMT), Paramount’s stock is up 0.2%.

political planning

The Department of Justice is considering the merger as the news of the show’s cancellation comes. Despite having economics in mind, the decision is also perceived as being political.

Its timing raises a lot of questions. Rodney Benson, professor in the New York University’s Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, told Al Jazeera that the politics surround it, especially for broadcast legacy media.

The administration claims that the coverage is biased, including the $ 16 million lawsuit that Paramount settled with Trump, and the administration has pursued news organizations and their parent media companies. Disney-owned ABC News settled a defamation lawsuit in December by paying for Trump’s library with a $ 15 million settlement and apologizing for inaccurate on-air remarks. The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) use and cuts to the public media also pose a threat to their broadcasting licenses’ future.

The FCC regulates broadcast networks, according to the FCC. The government can pursue them for what they perceive as news distortion if they need their licenses renewed, which they can be. They have already raised that, Benson continued.

Democrats have criticized the network for its alleged political justification for the show’s cancellation.

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren claimed on the social media platform X, which was formerly known as Twitter, that CBS canceled Colbert’s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $ 16 million settlement with Trump, which appears to be bribery.

The timing suggests that if it were just financial, they would have wanted to wait a little, Benson continued. The optics are simply terrible, so there must have been some pressure, according to Benson.

David Ellison, the son of Larry Ellison, the CEO of Oracle and a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, is in charge of Skydance, the company that is preparing to buy Paramount.

David Ellison, former confidante Elon Musk, health and human services secretary Robert F. Kennedy, and Ted Cruz, among others, fought for the UFC in April.

Matthew McConaughey’s forgotten thriller with a ‘sense of mystery’ is now streaming for free

You might have missed Matthew McConaughey’s leading role in this coming-of-age drama, but he is one of the most well-known actors of his generation.

Unsolved thriller by Matthew McConaughey available for streaming free.

A highly acclaimed dramatic thriller starring Matthew McConaughey can be streamed for free this weekend.

Fans of the Oscar-winning Hollywood heavyweight must watch it on BBC iPlayer starting on July 19th.

McConaughey, who was well-known for his roles in Interstellar and True Detective, first gained notoriety as a charming lead in romantic comedies, co-starring with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson.

Before winning an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club and making his way to the cosmos with Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, McConaughey co-starred in a lesser-known but highly praised coming-of-age drama that Jeff Nichols directed.

In Mud, McConaughey plays a fugitive on the run who forms an unlikely pact with two young lads while concealed on a secluded island, reports the Express.

The duo who stumble upon Mud hidden in a abandoned boat and agree to help him reunite with his beloved Juniper (played by Reese Witherspoon) are Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) and Jacob Lofland (Landman).

Despite receiving glowing reviews and a stellar 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, McConaughey’s more notable roles frequently eclipsed this 2012 gem. It is now receiving a second chance at being recognized by UK viewers via BBC iPlayer.

A fervent five-star reviewer wrote, “Loved this movie, watched it with my teenage son, this film has a rich spiritual universe that is contained within this well-made and brilliantly acted movie.”

There is a depth, authenticity, and mystery to this film that aren’t often found; there aren’t enough intelligent soulful films that can simultaneously appeal to both older and older teen audiences. As satisfying as a thick, juicy steak, it is both mythical and simply entertaining. Watch it with a loved one.

Another viewer praised “Drey with a touch of poetic licence,” and I found it to be quite captivating. keeps you guessing until the very end.

A different enthusiast wrote, “I would highly recommend the views on the river for older children and young adults.

It addresses many of the issues young people find difficult to understand while still maintaining the sense of mystery and adventure. It is heartbreaking and warm-hearted at the same time. I enjoyed it a lot. McConaughey’s gorgeous looks do not hurt.

Another five-star review of Jeff Nichols’ Mud states, “Mud is a beautiful coming of age film. It’s beautiful, as are compelling, heartfelt, and well-rounded, and it’s also compelling.

A final supporter praised the final half-hour of this as some of the best filmmaking in a while. I adored it, goddamn.

“Tye Sheridan, man, he is great,” says McConaughey, who has done it once more.

Don’t miss out on this weekend’s free streaming opportunity to watch Mud.

Brentford attempt to open contract talks with Wissa

Yoane Wissa is believed to prefer a departure from the club this summer despite Brentford’s attempts to strike a deal with him.

The Bees are focused on resolving Wissa’s future with Bryan Mbeumo, who is expected to join Manchester United.

The DR Congo international has strong interest among Newcastle, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest.

Brentford have begun negotiations to end the 28-year-old’s contract with the club after his 2021 move to West London from French club Lorient.

However, sources have suggested Wissa has no desire to discuss improved terms and has made it clear in private that he wants to look into options elsewhere.

In light of this, Brentford’s future is emerging as a result of his assessment of Wissa.

With Mbeumo turning 29 in September, Brentford’s desire to lose both Mbeumo and Wissa this summer will likely be weighed against the possibility of a depreciating asset, which could cost upwards of £40 million, if not more.

Another factor to consider is that he only has 12 months left on his current contract despite having the option to renew it by another year.

There seems merit in finding a resolution, whether through a sale or a contract renewal, sooner rather than later.

The Gtech Community Stadium has experienced a summer of upheavals: Thomas Frank joined Spurs, Mark Flekken left for Bayer Leverkusen, Christian Norgaard joined Arsenal, and Mbeumo, the current star forward, is preparing to join Old Trafford.

With an unsuccessful £35 million offer to Ipswich for attacker Omari Hutchinson, Brentford have already begun the process of restocking their forward options.

Last season, they watched Bournemouth forward Dango Ouattara closely.

Oasis lost trio of unheard songs found as band continue on tour in Manchester Heaton Park

Although Oasis continue to play to sold out crowds on their tour, they have some intriguing options for new music.

Three lost and previously unheard Oasis songs have been discovered. The trio of tracks date back to the Be Here Now era and were found on a DAT tape marked “B-sides” from when the band were releasing All Around The World as a single in 1998.

The songs are all performed by Noel Gallagher and one track, referred to as “I’m Alive”, has been described as one of the best tracks Noel has ever written by one fan, who would love to see it released. It differs from B-Side Alive released in the Nineties

Another song makes contact with a bridge section, which was eventually released as Go Let It Out’s number one single in 2000. Kyle Dale, a member of the Oasis Collectors Group, found the tape and played it to Paul Bonehead Arthurs, a band member currently touring with the band on the Oasis Live’25 shows, who confirmed their rarity.

Kyle said, “I just knew this was different when I first appeared on the Oasis Podcast last month. This tape only lists B-sides; it was supposed to be seven minutes long, but it’s actually 55 minutes long.

Liam and Noel Gallagher

This one, I am aware, was not in the archive. Noel has lost more gold than we can even imagine, and he has not received everything. This has been lost for 20 years, I can assure you. I do think that time was wasted on that.

The story would be that Noel would tape them and send them round the band, where they would listen to them and then return to it as I played them to Bonehead. He says, “Oh, I remember that song when I play him one.” Next one: “I’ve never heard that before in my life.” Bonehead must have thought that was excellent. He stopped what he was doing and listened to the third one, which we’ve called I’m Alive. This is the era, which dates back to 1997.

That is one of Noel’s best compositions, in my opinion. It is incredible. I was like, “F***ing hell. ” when I heard that song there. It really struck me as a time capsule, I must say.

“I’m Alive. It would start to take off if that was made public right away. People are bringing back memories of earlier times.

The Rolling Stones’ Street Fighting Man and Flashbax, both of which were used as B-sides on the single release, are also included in the tape. Tomorrow Never Knows is a cover of the Beatles’ song, and Flashbax is a cover.

Collector Kyle has received a $20, 000 reward for the lost tape, but he instead returned Noel copies of the songs.

The tracks, however, appear to be in a very long way. Noel previously stated in a statement on The Matt Morgan Podcast that he had received a USB stick from a fan, and that he might as well have been sending me a f****** microchip. With a USB stick, I don’t do what he asks of me to do. I don’t own a laptop. The USB stick is still in the jiffy bag he sent it in, but I haven’t heard it. He can put them on CD if he wants me to listen to it.

I have no idea what these songs are, so I’m skeptical that there will be any complete albums there. When everyone would go to bed, Owen Morris would turn the microphones on and I would sing a verse or chorus of some tunes, as I recall during Be Here Now. There will undoubtedly be a song called If We Shadows on the site. Beyond that, I’m not interested in it. I appreciate you sending it and everything. I haven’t even heard it in a while. If I’m being honest, I don’t care about it, but if you do, send me a CD with the link to the album.

Hamas says Israel rejected ceasefire deal releasing all captives in Gaza

Israel rejected a ceasefire agreement that would release all of the prisoners held in Gaza, according to the military wing of Hamas, and it is said the organization is prepared for a protracted conflict if a deal is not reached.

The Qassam Brigades’ long-time leader, Abu Obeida, claimed in a nearly 20-minute prerecorded video that the organization had in recent months offered a “comprehensive deal” that would release all captives at once, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right ministers rejected it.

Hamas supports a deal that allows the Israeli military to withdraw, the release of humanitarian aid, and the entry of besieged Palestinians, he said, adding that it has become clear that the government of the criminal Netanyahu has no real interest in the captives because they are soldiers.

According to Abu Obeida, Hamas cannot guarantee a return to any partial agreements, including a 60-day deal currently being discussed that would result in the release of ten captives if Israel resigns from this round of indirect talks held in Qatar.

In Gaza, Hamas is still holding 50 people, with 20 of whom are reportedly still alive.

Abu Obeida added that Hamas fighters are “ready to continue a long battle of attrition” and will keep up ambushes throughout Gaza with the intention of capturing or killing Israeli soldiers in his first video message since early March.

He criticized the governments of the Arab and Islamic countries for their actions in response to Israel’s “genocide,” stating that “your necks are burdened with the blood of tens of thousands of innocent people who were betrayed by your silence.”

The comments come as the Doha talks have failed to produce any conclusions because Israel insists on maintaining and expanding military dominance over Gaza, including the Morag Corridor and the new Magen Oz Corridor, which set Rafah and Khan Younis apart from the rest of the enclave, respectively.

Israel is moving forward with plans to construct a concentration camp on the ruins of Rafah as soldiers continue to block humanitarian aid to the besieged population and slaughter Palestinians who are starving at GHF-run sites, despite international criticism.

According to medical sources, Israeli forces killed at least 41 Palestinians on Friday, according to Al Jazeera.

Since Israel broke the last ceasefire in March, more than 58, 667 Palestinians have died and 139, 974 have been injured, including at least 7, 843 of whom have been killed and 27 993 have been injured, according to the most recent figures released by Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Real Housewives’ Teddi Mellencamp says doctors failed to spot stage 4 cancer spreading

Teddi Mellencamp, the reality TV star from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, has spoken about receiving cancer treatment for melanomas that had spread to her brain and lungs.

Reality TV star Teddi Mellencamp has said that doctors didn’t realise that her cancer was spreading to her brain and lungs. She’s also opened up about having not requested scans that could have spotted the metastasized tumours.

Teddi, 44, who is best known for having been on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, shared that she had been diagnosed with skin cancer in 2022. She’s since said to have had 17 spots of melanoma removed from her back.

Then, earlier this year, she claimed that doctors hadn’t realized the cancer had spread. She announced that doctors had discovered stage four tumors in her brain and lungs, adding that they had been growing for at least six months.

Teddi, who competed on the US version of Celebrity Big Brother the same year that she shared her initial diagnosis, had emergency brain surgery, radiation and immunotherapy treatment after the secondary cancer was found. She’s continued to share updates with fans since then.

Whilst interviewed by her pal and former RHOBH co-star Kyle Richards for Glamour magazine recently, Teddi spoke about having not questioned why she didn’t have certain scans after the initial melonamos were identified. It came after Kyle suggested that she would ask for scans to detect potential spreading if she had “that much” skin cancer and it’s “that aggressive”. She however said “that wasn’t ever brought up” to Teddi.

Teddi said, “When you go to a doctor, you just assume that’s it.” She admitted to not researching herself initially because she didn’t want to know “the bad things,” and told Kyle that she thought she was doing what she was supposed to do.

Teddi, who’s the daughter of singer John Mellencamp, added in the interview published earlier this week: “I never really thought about it because I was like, I go to a doctor every three months. Why wouldn’t they get me checked?”

She claimed that stage one of her “highest” melanoma was on her shoulder. Teddi claimed that because she “didn’t have” anything above stage one on her body, she was informed when she “finally followed up on it.”

Teddi also gave fans advice in the interview, including telling them to trust their gut feeling while saying she’s “patiently” awaiting the day she’s been told she’s “cancer-free.” She recalled not feeling well for “a long time” before turning to the doctor, who later admitted she had “self-diagnosed” rather than sought medical attention.

Her comments come after she announced in February that her cancer had metastasized to her brain. She said at the time: “For the last several weeks I’ve been dealing with severe and debilitating headaches. Yesterday the pain was unbearable and required hospitalisation. After a CT scan and MRI, doctors found multiple tumours on my brain, which they believe have been growing for at least 6 months.”

Teddi explained to the audience that the two tumors would be surgically removed, and that the remaining smaller ones would be treated with radiation. She continued, “I am blessed to be surrounded by my children, family, friends, doctors, nurses, and surgeons who are attempting to restore my health to its best level.”

Teddi then announced that two more tumors had been removed than “expected” two weeks later. She then claimed in March that she also had two lungs and that several tumors in her brain couldn’t be removed with surgery. She said, “My melanoma has metastasized to all of these.” The doctors are optimistic that immunotherapy will treat them well.

Teddi told supporters that “every tumour stage 4 (metastasized melanoma in my brain and lungs) shrunk or disappeared, so I need to go through six or seven more weeks of immunotherapy, and doctors believe I’ll be healed if everything stays on course.”

In her own words, she wrote in April: “It’s been 76 days since I went to the ER with unbearable headaches and quickly discovered I had multiple stage 4 tumors in my brain and lungs that are the size of plums.” We had no idea that the mammal had metastasized there and had been there for “6 months to a year.”
