Russell ‘feels ready to fight for a championship’

After claiming a dominant victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, Mercedes driver George Russell declares that he is “feeling ready to fight for a championship.”

Following a triumph in Canada in June, Russell’s second victory of the season came on the same track where he had lost third place on the final lap while chasing a 2023 victory.

Lando Norris, who was third in McLaren’s championship, and championship leader Oscar Piastri, who was fourth, finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

“I am perfectly aware of what I need to do in particular circumstances.”

As you might expect, I was nervous before the race, but I didn’t experience any additional stress or nerves. I had a chance to win, and I was happy with that because it just felt like another race.

“I’ve been saying this for a while; I’m ready to fight for a championship. I’m prepared to proceed further.

Russell attributed his improvement to “experience, just knowing how to maximize every situation,” in his 2013 essay.

He continued, “I probably was driving a little more tense and probably over-pushing in circumstances when I shouldn’t have been.”

I just feel much more at ease right now. I felt at ease before today.

Russell said Singapore was “probably my most dominant weekend,” but he didn’t define it as his best win, calling Las Vegas victory from last year “pretty cool.”

Mercedes’ victory in the Singaporean Grand Prix was “so unexpected,” he added, noting that their second-place position in the constructors’ championship was in danger of losing.

He stated, “We need to sit down tomorrow and Tuesday to sort of comprehend why the performance was so good.”

Verstappen and Russell shared the pole position, but the Dutchman believed he could have snagged a win if he had not collided with Lando Norris’ McLaren’s dirty air on the final lap and slid wide at the final chicane.

Verstappen’s choice to start the race with soft tyres helped Russell’s race victory.

Verstappen struggled to challenge Russell once he held the lead at the first corner. And he held back Norris’ McLaren for the remainder of the race, which appeared to have the pace to challenge Russell.

Russell’s contract is anticipated soon.

Russell’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and Verstappen’s future at Mercedes was uncertain earlier in the season as team principal Toto Wolff pursued him.

However, Wolff and Russell have consistently claimed that it was only a matter of time before Verstappen made a new commitment to Red Bull following the firing of former team principal Christian Horner.

A new contract is still being worked out by Russell and Wolff, but it is anticipated to come in the next few weeks and possibly even before the United States Grand Prix on October 17 and 19th.

After the race, Wolff declared, “He’s been formidable this year.” I’ve never seen mistakes. He himself claimed on weekends that the race wasn’t a good race and that he could have done more.

However, any driver can experience this. When it merges, the driver is top of things and the car is in a perfect position. That becomes the main ingredient, as we have seen in this example.

This is why we tried to be gentle – Guardiola on Rodri injury

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

After he slowed off in the first half of Sunday’s victory over Brentford, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hopes Rodri won’t be sidelined for more than “two or three weeks.”

Rodri’s injury occurred within the first 20 minutes of play at Gtech Community Stadium, where he missed the majority of last season due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

As Nico Gonzalez took the place of the midfielder, he looked devastated as he left the field.

Guardiola reaffirmed that it is “muscular.” Because he is such a crucial player, “Of course I don’t want to lose him [at all].”

We made an effort to look after him, but it is still there.

Since the 2023-24 season, the Spain international has only played 15 games and missed last weekend’s 5-1 victory over Burnley due to knee pain.

Rodri told Sky Sports, “I did feel a little in the hamstring, but it seems like it’s not that much.”

Two days after retiring the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner from City’s 2-2 draw with Monaco in the Champions League, Guardiola was asked about the 29-year-old’s fitness at his pre-game press conference on Friday.

Rodri had already left after Eric Dier’s late penalty, but Guardiola claims Guardiola’s late injury on Sunday validated his decision to send him off at Stade Louis II.

“I was right, no”? he informed Sky Sports. You questioned why I didn’t play him 90 minutes apiece. Why do I replace him, the journalists always inquire.

We tried to play him for 60 to 65 minutes because of this.

‘Nowhere near our level’ but Celtic show ‘heart’ in landmark win

SNS

Brendan Rodgers was unwavering about the unconvincing standard of his team’s displays following his 200th victory as Celtic manager.

After his side came from behind to defeat Motherwell in stoppage time to settle a five-goal Scottish Premiership thriller, he said, “We’re nowhere near our level, I can be clear on that.”

Before a gift from visiting goalkeeper Calum Ward gave Benjamin Nygren the equalizer, a disgruntled home crowd watched as Celtic went ahead, level, and then fell behind.

Daizen Maeda’s 92nd-minute header changed the game, but the Parkhead club was on the verge of winning a third straight game.

The manager praised his players’ mentality as they continued to win the league without a win and fell back to within two points of leaders Hearts despite not meeting the demands of Rodgers.

It’s undoubtedly a very significant win for us, he declared. “The players displayed unimaginable heart,” they said.

winning goal “special feeling” for Maeda

Rodgers praised the impact of his substitutions, with Michel-Ange Balikwisha setting up Maeda for the winning goal and Nygren slamming in the 69th minute equalizer that was given to him.

However, the Celtic boss was eager to give individual praise to the winner of the game.

Maeda, a forward from Japan, has struggled to score in the 12 games that preceded this weekend, scoring just twice in total. Last term, he added 33 goals and added 12 assists.

The 27-year-old, who wanted to leave Glasgow in the summer, has been the subject of transfer speculation, according to Rodgers.

In a transfer window that sparked outrage among the supporters, a potential departure was ostensibly obstructed by the club hierarchy.

Following Sunday’s victory, the Celtic boss praised Maeda’s commitment despite the suggestion that the club’s mood is still in a bad way.

His hope is now that the dramatic winner and the subsequent wild cheers will set off a stellar run of form for the forward.

It’s enormous for him and his family, Rodgers remarked of Maeda’s triumphant moment. He would have been affected by everything in the summer without a doubt.

He has dedicated his life and soul to this club for four years. I completely respect that he experienced disappointment [in the summer].

Wigan clinch treble with Grand Final win over Saints

Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final

Wigan Warriors (4) 16

Tries: Davies 2, Jones 2

St. Helens (8) 12

Wigan Warriors won their first treble in the women’s game by coming from behind to beat St. Helens in the Grand Final at the Brick Community Stadium.

In front of a record crowd of 5, 018, Saints looked set to upset the odds at half-time, after tries from Dani McGifford and Phoebe Hook answered Anna Davies ‘ opener for the Warriors, who had already secured the Challenge Cup and League Leaders ‘ Shield.

After the break, however, Wigan stepped up a gear, with Molly Jones going over for two tries in the space of five minutes to turn the game on its head before Davies raced away for her second to give Wigan breathing space.

Saints were underdogs going into the game after being hammered 42-6 at Wembley in June, but the way they bounced back in Super League to earn a 22-22 draw and then narrowly lose 24-20 to push Wigan all the way indicated that this would be a tough encounter for both, and so it proved.

Wigan’s dangerous backs were up against Saints ‘ powerhouse pack, and that led to a tight, tense first half in which both sides defended with discipline and determination.

Grace Banks was denied an opening try for Wigan when a video review spotted an obstruction in the build-up, and then Rebecca Rotheram’s fine tackle stopped Jenna Foubister racing clear as Saints were on the back foot.

Winger Davies kept up her record of scoring in every game against Saints this season, bursting through two would-be tacklers and going over in the corner, but it was all square when Banks spilled a Faye Gaskin high bomb and Saints quickly moved it left to give McGifford her 20th try of the Super League season.

Saints took a half-time lead when they again shifted the ball quickly and Hook went over in the corner.

Wigan were facing only their second defeat of the season but reacted like champions, forcing Saints into a goal-line drop-out and then quickly shifting it left for Jones to level the score.

Five minutes later, Jones put in a repeat, scooting over after more slick handling and as the Saints defence tired the pace and power of Davies proved too much as the England player stormed down the right to score another in the corner.

‘ Our consistency has been outstanding ‘ – Betts

Wigan Warriors boss Denis Betts told BBC Radio Manchester:

“You could tell in the first half we looked nervy and edgy in our halves. You might recall that the first half saw that the first half had been taken away from the team that went to Wembley, and that we started to feel a little uneasy because we are a very young side.

“This year has been outstanding in terms of consistency given the group’s age.” They didn’t expect to be as good as they were.

The exciting thing is that they have learned from this, and they are aware of how to dig in and win a game. It can be as simple as working hard, which we have done a few times this year.
