Bus crash in southern Iran kills at least 21, injures 34

According to state media reports, a bus overturned in the south of Iran left at least 21 people dead.

34 other people were hurt in the accident on Saturday south of Shiraz, the provincial capital, according to Masoud Abed, the head of Fars province’s emergency organization.

After the operation is finished and thorough investigations have been conducted, Abed stated that rescue operations are still ongoing, and that additional details and final figures will be made public.

The incident’s origins are being looked into.

‘Awkward’ Fab Four moment that sparked Harry and William split

Prince William, Princess Kate, Prince Harry, and Meghan once worked as a team, but a “cue” of an awkward public moment caused chaos in the now strained relationship.

Once upon a time, the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared to be a dream team, representing a younger, more modern vision of the Royal Family.

Then it all came crashing down, in a now widely forgotten moment that spelt the beginning of the end for the then-affectionately nicknamed The Fab Four. In February 2018, long before Prince Harry and Meghan upped sticks to Montecito, the two royal couples made their first official appearance together at the first Royal Foundation forum summit.

This ought to have set the course for a thrilling journey together. William and Kate were expecting Prince Louis, their third child, while Harry and Meghan were already making plans for their May wedding.

Unfortunately, things turned out so badly that it was decided that the quartet would never again appear on stage together again despite other major group royal engagements, like Trooping the Colour. It served as a harbinger of the future.

It was undoubtedly a very different time for the House of Windsor. Back then, before the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the subsequent coronation of King Charles, William and Kate were still known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Meghan, now 43, was still establishing herself as a newly appointed member of “The Firm,” with royal admirers enthralled by the Hollywood glitz that the former actress brought to life. Unfortunately, Meghan’s star power appeared to backfire during this ominous summit, which presumably didn’t go well with the upcoming Queen Kate.

Meghan, a mother-of-two, passionately spoke about movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, which encourage women to “use their voices,” at the central London-based summit, which was organized around the idea of “making a difference together.”

She continued, “I hear a lot of people talking about girls’ and women’s empowerment, and you’ll hear people saying that they support women’s voices.”

I completely disagree with that because people need to be urged to listen and women don’t need to be able to use their voices. There is no better time to continue highlighting women’s sense of empowerment and the support they have right now, with the proliferation of campaigns like #MeToo and #TimesUp.

Tina Brown, a writer, wrote an analysis of the Windsor feud in her 2022 book The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor, the Truth and the Turmoil.

This now-famous summit, which provided a compelling look into the dynamics between these four very different people, caught the former Vanity Fair editor’s attention before writing the 2007 bestseller The Diana Chronicles.

Ms. Brown noted that Kate, 43, spoke fluently on the then-hot topic of women’s empowerment, which was “surprisingly less articulate” than Meghan, who was able to speak fluently.

With blithe proprietorship, the astute author used a topic that was not even on the foundation’s agenda: women’s empowerment, which reached its fervid height with the rise of the #MeToo movement.

Women don’t need to have a voice, they just need to find one. They are heard. Meghan remarked as she spoke as Harry watched with admiration and his brother and Kate watched with expressionless awe as they both pleaded for them to feel empowered to use it. She was noticeably less articulate and brief when it was Kate’s turn to speak.

Few knew that it was her younger brother, James, who had been the main focus of the foundation’s mental health campaign after years of providing emotional support to him as he struggled with clinical depression, who had been the main influencer of the “awesome dynamic” she continued, “as few knew that it was she,” reflecting on the “awkward dynamic.”

It was developed with the assistance of Palace advisers, policy experts, and mental health professionals. Meghan was now promoting a fashionable cause that was endorsed by Hollywood and sure to garner media attention. It was a strange dynamic. Later, it was decided that the Fab Four would not play as a band together again onstage.

Meghan’s appointment as the fourth patron of the Royal Foundation was the subject of a formal announcement at the ceremony, which William said was “delighted” to have her aboard.

However, there were already some hints of growing tensions as the group joked about “healthy disagreements,” which Harry said “come thick and fast.” William sneered, “Is it resolved?” “We don’t know!”

Harry continued, “I think it’s really good that we have four different personalities and we all have that same passion to make a difference.”

We disagree on many things, but they work really well together. Of course, having a family does have its challenges. The fact that everyone is laughing demonstrates, in my opinion, how well versed they are in it. However, our lives will remain akin to a chain.

Love Islander revealed as former X Factor star with incredible link to Beyoncé

Yasmin Broom, the star of Love Island, may have only been there for a short while, but she has been busy and booked since.

Yasmin left the villa shortly after Casa Amor, and entered it shortly after.

She might have only popped into Casa Amor, but Yasmin Broom made a main character entrance – and left like the icon she is.

From X Factor girlbander to globe-trotting DJ, the Manchester native has been booked and busy since stepping out the villa (literally the next day). While her Love Island journey with Gio didn’t end in a fairytale, Yasmin’s not letting any man fumble her vibe. With sets for YSL, Prada Beauty and even Beyoncé under her belt, she’s proving she’s that girl – on and off the decks.

But it hasn’t all been glitz and glam. From being the only Black woman in a girlband, to feeling overlooked in the dating scene, Yasmin’s kept it real about navigating the industry – and the Island – as a Black woman. Here, she chats to about mic’d-up madness, her dream collab with Rihanna, and why the only “type” she’s entertaining now is husband energy…

Hello Yaz. What’s up with you? What has been like since the end of the world?

Not bad, at least it’s been a little hectic. Literally, it flew back on Friday before going on to go go go. I’ve been waiting for DJ bookings, which is crazy, but I really enjoy it.

What inspired you to pursue a DJ career?

I started in lockdown basically. I used to be in a band – Four of Diamonds – and during lockdown we couldn’t perform or do anything. So I thought, what can I do? I taught myself to DJ using YouTube. Then when we stopped the band, I was like, “I need to make some money.” I just went to clubs in Manchester and London like, “Let me DJ, please!” I couldn’t really DJ that great at the time, but they gave me a chance. The first club that gave me a shot was Tape in London. The fee wasn’t great, I had to pay for my train and hotel—but I was like, “You know what, I’ll do it.” And it spiralled from there! I started playing for YSL, Prada Beauty, Sol de Janeiro, L’Oréal…

What is the most bizarre place or company you have worked for?

For Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, it’s likely Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Since I’m a huge Beyoncé fan, I was enthralled when I received that call.

What inspired you to travel to Love Island, then?

I tried the dating apps – I met some of my exes on them and Instagram. But men don’t really approach in real life anymore. I mean, it didn’t work out with Gio, but overall, I did enjoy my time in the villa. It was surreal, and I made some amazing girlfriends—me, Emma, and Rio are planning to meet up when Emma gets out, have dinner and catch up.

Were you surprised Gio didn’t take you back to the main villa because you connected with him?

Yes, I was surprised. There were no other conversations that led me to believe it wouldn’t occur. Very last minute, I guess. But I believe he kept to himself because it was impossible to force him to feel the connection.

You assumed, “But you’re done,” were you?

100%! Even the girls were like, “Oh no, you guys are strong. We all said, “You’re returning to the main villa!” He simply entered by himself, though.

Yasmin, Caroline Alvares, Lauren Rammell and Sophia Saffarian of Four of Diamonds
On X Factor, Yasmin performed in a band called Four of Diamonds, which included Lauren Rammell, Lauren Alvarez, and Sophia Saffarian.

Do you believe that the boys have this pattern? Last minute change of minds?

Yes, they don’t take themselves seriously. They change their minds so quickly; it’s like a candy shop kid. They say, “Oh my God! ” when a new sweet arrives. But then they want to go back to their original sweets, like Harrison and Toni!

Why did you split up with Four of Diamonds while on X Factor?

After the initial lockdown, EMI dropped us. We made another attempt, but our teams were all spread out, with Birmingham and Manchester as our only financial options. We then halted.

Nicole Scherzinger, did she offer any advice?

We desired her to serve as our mentor, and she was lovely. She named us her favorite female band! Instead of getting Louis, we were gassed. He also excelled. So nice, Simon. Not what you’d anticipate; incredibly sweet off camera. She instructed us to silence the noise and carry out our four-way goals. That has remained with me ever since.

You work in music as a Black woman. How do you deal with the misconception that people don’t take you seriously as a DJ?

It is difficult. I’m a girl, and I’m not sure why some venues won’t let me play. Maybe it’s because of how I look or how I look. You are aware, though. With my backpack, I travel across the country without a label or assistance. Just me, folks.

That shouldn’t continue to happen in 2025. Do you think it has an impact on your relationship?

100%. I wasn’t anyone’s “type” in the villa; that’s what you get. Gio even inquired as to what kind of person I was. He said “yes,” but he continued. It’s challenging. However, my husband is present.

Has Simon ever discussed signing you?

No, because he wasn’t our mentor. However, Virgin reached out to our manager as soon as we left the show. They wanted us to be signed to a significant label, which was their intention.

What was the sensation like?

Amazing . That was everything we desired, like getting signed to a major record label, and they are one of the best because they helped us a lot, they taught me a lot, and I now have a lot of knowledge from the girl band, like DJ.

Can you tell us who you’ve collaborated with both solo and with the band because you’ve worked with a lot of artists? Yes ! We performed songs with Burna Boy, Saweetie, Mr. Eazi, and Jonas Blue when I was with the girls. I’ve also played for Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Kaytranada, Sabrina Carpenter, and others as a DJ.

Yasmin
Yasmin has represented Sabrina Carpenter, Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Kaytranada, and Ne-Yo.

You even performed before Love Island at the Parklife Festival, did you know? Yes! Before entering the villa, I actually completed Parklife. I just confirmed Parklife and hoped it would work out because I wasn’t sure what was going on with Love Island at the time.

Who has so far been the best celeb to work with? Ne-Yo is most likely. He is so genuine and sincere. He actually schedules time for you. When you meet celebrities, their behavior sometimes goes against what you expect. Not him, though. He excelled.

Who would you want to play for in your life? . . . Oh my goodness. I’ll be aware that I’ve made it if I play the drums for Rihanna. I’m obsessed! A Fenty Beauty event would be fantastic, and I’d love to do that.

Ben Ofoedu takes aim at ex Vanessa Feltz during wedding to parter 23 years his junior

Two years after revealing that he had fallen in love with his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Feltz, Ben Ofoedu and his fiance Vanessa Brown have since wed.

Ben Ofoedu, Vanessa Feltz’s ex-boyfriend, and Vanessa Brown finally got married in a lavish ceremony surrounded by celebrity family and friends.

Vanessa, a singer who is 23 years his junior, and the 52-year-old Phats and Small singer got married in a lavish Carlisle castle. Despite continuing to be devastated by his failed romance with TV star Vanessa, 63, he couldn’t help but criticize her when discussing his new love.

The music producer, who has been dating Vanessa Feltz for 16 years, said, “I know what true love is now.”

Back in February 2023, the This Morning star took to social media to shared with fans that her 16 year relationship with Ben was over. At the time, the TV and radio presenter had hinted at Ben’s infidelity but also mentioned in another interview a month earlier that her age gap became a subject of concern.

In the meantime, Ben’s main regret was that he had a bad idea about becoming a father. And so, it appears that Ben’s future plans to be a husband and father could be quite likely given that his new bride is younger than his years.

According to The Sun, he told guests at the wedding that he knew I would fall in love with this girl the first time I met her. The estimated cost of the couple’s wedding is estimated to be around £100,000.

He continued, “I told her that I knew I was giving her attention, but I had intentions with this girl,” which he claimed. I then told her on the second date that I wanted to get married to her and have children because I believed saying that would help us distinguish the wheat from the chaff.

However, his close friend, Dane Bowers, who also performs Another Level, interrupted his emotional speech, exclaiming, “That, and you’re really old. Everyone at the wedding reception erupted in laughter as a result of Dane’s outburst.

After separating from Vanessa and meeting his new wife, Ben now has a firm conviction that there was a reason for their split. He asserted that “everything happens for a reason.” I now comprehend that.

Ben did exactly that, although it’s not often that he mentions an ex at his wedding to another woman. He declared to the wedding party, “It’s no secret that I went through a really difficult two years.” Not everyone was aware of how difficult a situation I was in because I had a brave front to put up but was quite quiet behind the scenes.

Ben was grieving over the breakup of their relationship, but his younger brother’s sudden passing at the age of 47 brought on even more conflict. Ben delved deeply into his faith and explained to his guests how the conversation he had with God led to his getting a music gig and meeting his new wife.

He continued, “I was crying uncontrollably and breaking down in tears. I then prayed and fell to my knees. I questioned God, “Is this true? ” Do you still run your business? Will you accept my customer as my customer?

He continued, “I know it sounds funny, but it’s the truth.” I received a call two days later that completely altered my life. Then Ben was called to join Boyz on Block and make an unexpected appearance at the Elite Awards in Carlisle. Then, in April of last year, he met Vanessa.

After being forced to resign from Boyzone and Westlife, Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden were forced to do so.

After only 15 months since their first meeting, Ben took the chance to propose while in New York on Valentine’s Day this year.

Fact check: Does ICE have higher detention standards than prisons in US?

Democrats in Congress who witnessed the opening of Florida’s new immigration detention facility, Alligator Alcatraz, reported seeing dozens of people squabbling for help in metal enclosures, bugs and mosquitoes in bunk areas, and high temperatures above 80 degrees inside.

Republicans who also toured the facility tell a different story, describing the space as safe, clean and well-run. The state-run Alligator Alcatraz’s description of the conditions at the state-run facility has been called “false by the federal Homeland Security Department,” which regulates immigration detention.

During a July 13 interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem was questioned about Democrats’ accounts. She said the Florida-run facility is “held to the highest levels of what the federal government requires for detention facilities”.

Noem claimed that “our detention facilities at the federal level are held to a higher standard than the majority of our local or state centers or even federal prisons.” The requirements are “extremely high.”

White House border tsar Tom Homan also touted the nation’s immigration detention standards as being a cut above those for prisons and jails.

Homan defended federal facilities when a reporter inquired about a 75-year-old Cuban man who had spent 60 years living in the US before passing away in Miami in June.

He continued, “People die in immigration and customs enforcement] custody,” before claiming that ICE has “the highest detention standards in the industry.” I’ll compare an ICE detention facility against any state prison against any federal facility. Any of them will have me compete. People complain that the detention facilities are “horrible.” Go look for yourself then come back and talk to me”.

Nearly six months into Trump’s second term, Isidro Perez was the 11th person to pass away in ICE custody. During his final year in office, former president Joe Biden passed away in 12 deaths.

ICE detention centres have standards akin to prisons. For a few reasons, it’s difficult to compare blanket judgments about the standards of immigration detention to those in state, local, or other federal facilities.

  • It’s challenging to enforce ICE detention standards because they aren’t legally codified.
  • Different ICE detention centres are upheld to different standards based on the terms of their individual contracts.
  • There are no set of guidelines for local, state, and federal prisons and jails. Some standards must be codified into law, while others are not.

Several government watchdog agencies, advocacy organisations and news reports have long documented inadequate conditions at immigration detention centres.

At an El Paso detention center, the human rights organization Amnesty International reported “physical abuse by guards, use of solitary confinement, unsanitary and overcrowded living conditions, including dysfunctional toilets, insufficient medical care, and poor-quality, expired food.”

Homan’s statement was described as “very misleading,” according to Lauren Brinkley-Rubinstein, an associate professor at Duke University who studies the health effects of the criminal justice system.

“In most respects, ICE facilities operate with less consistent oversight and legal accountability than state or federal prisons or local jails”, Brinkley-Rubinstein said. “ICE detention facilities and the people who run them generally have a much lower level of transparency about their operations.”

Detention standards are established by ICE, but they are not standardized or widely used.

Several federal agencies and private companies run immigration detention facilities. All of its detention centers are required to adhere to standards set by ICE, the main organization charged with detained immigration.

For instance, facilities must have potable water and be sanitary. Detainees must have access to medical and mental healthcare, including getting prescription medications. Only when necessary and reasonable circumstances call for physical force, not as punishment. Additionally, attorneys must be able to speak with detainees in secret.

There are different sets of standards for facilities that hold immigrant detainees and other non-immigration-related detainees, such as local prisons, and for facilities that exclusively hold immigrants.

According to University of Michigan law professor Margo Schlanger, the standards for centers that also house non-immigrant detainees were based on “the most stripped down version of jail standards” and were based on “jail standards in use by many jails.”

What standards does Alligator Alcatraz adhere to, it’s unclear. The centre is state-run even though courts have repeatedly held that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. However, an ICE official, Thomas P. Giles, claimed in a court declaration that the agency had “toured the facility to ensure compliance with ICE detention standards.”

There is no timing coordination between updates to ICE standards and those to other facilities, even though both sets of immigration standards are periodically updated. Standards are individually negotiated and implemented in separate contracts leading “to varying degrees of protection across detention facilities”, a 2021 Harvard Law Review article about immigration detention said.

Detention standards are difficult to enforce because they are not codified into law. One immigration expert claimed that because the industry is largely self-regulated, detainees’ complaints about the facilities’ conditions have little legal backing.

“Standards are often merely guidelines and largely unenforceable. They are stiff and frail, according to Mount Holyoke College professor David Hernández, who has a background in detention and deportation policy. “Very few facilities lose their contracts because detainees die or other things go wrong.”

Government watchdogs, nonprofit organisation, news reports detail inadequate conditions at detention centres

Detention centers are largely governed by the Homeland Security Department’s responsibility for ensuring compliance with ICE standards. Government watchdog organizations and advocacy groups have questioned the viability of these investigations for years, citing a number of instances of facilities breaking ICE standards.

In 2020, Congress created the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman to conduct unauthorised investigations of detention centres and to allow immigrants to file individual complaints for the office to review.

The Trump administration attempted to close the office in March. The administration was sued by a civil rights organization. In response, DHS said in a declaration that the office would stay open but with a smaller staff. According to immigration experts, this decision severely limits the control of detention facilities.

Overcrowding and inadequate immigration detention conditions have been raised by news outlets and advocacy groups. The Trump administration is currently detaining&nbsp, about 60, 000 people –&nbsp, that’s 20, 000 more people than it has&nbsp, congressional funding&nbsp, to detain.

According to the external reports, detainees in various locations are denied medical attention, put in solitary confinement after complaining about conditions, denied legal assistance, and targeted because they are Venezuelan. Stacy Brustin, a professor of immigration law at Catholic University, called these “mirror accounts” that she and her students had witnessed while visiting various detention facilities.

“We heard shocking descriptions of overcrowding, sewage leaks, inoperable toilets, water running down cell block walls, insufficient access to water, spoiled or inedible food, inability to move freely in cell blocks for prolonged periods, and substandard medical care for individuals with serious, life-threatening conditions”, Brustin said. These conditions go against ICE detention guidelines.

For instance, according to ICE standards, facilities must offer detainees “a nutritionally balanced diet that is prepared and presented in a sanitary and hygienic manner.” Spoiled food is a violation.

differences between prison and ICE detention

Some states have codified requirements for the detention facilities, while others do not. Some facilities are accredited by the American Correctional Association, which has its own set of&nbsp, standards.

The 8th Amendment, which forbids “cruel and unusual punishments” in criminal cases, and the 14th Amendment, which protects people from being denied “life, liberty, or property, without a due process of law, must be adhered to by all facilities in the US Constitution. Additionally, prisoners’ access to religious facilities, prisoners’ rights to privacy, and people with disabilities must abide by federal laws governing sexual violence and prisoners’ rights.

“Courts have ruled that people who are incarcerated in these facilities have the right to care, safety, and humane treatment”, Brinkley-Rubinstein said.

Prison and jail standards typically include provisions similar to those for immigration detention, such as having access to legal and medical facilities, and other requirements.

Depending on the facility, oversight practices also vary. Some places are subject to independent oversight, others rely only on internal oversight.

Prisons and jails that don’t uphold standards also have a variety of consequences.

According to Andrea Armstrong, a professor and expert on prison conditions at Loyola University New Orleans, “the judge may require regular reports, appoint an independent monitor, a manager, or even a receiver to operate all aspects of the facility.”

Some places may lose their contracts depending on the severity of the situation, Schlanger said. Facilities may be subject to legal action in other circumstances.

Immigration laws apply to legal requests from immigrants who contend that detention facilities don’t uphold their standards. That’s because immigration detention is a civil rather than criminal form of detention.
