World champion Luke Littler beat veteran Paul Lim 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Bahrain Masters.

On his first trip to the oche since retaining his world title at Alexandra Palace on 3 January, Littler put in a statement performance.

The 19-year-old had an average of 106 as he brushed aside 71-year-old Singaporean Lim.

“Not a chance! I will say it now,” England’s Littler replied when asked if he will still be playing into his 70s.

“He’s just class and I wonder when is he going to retire? He still goes very strong in the practice room as well.”

Littler faces Wales’ Gerwyn Price, who saw off Motomu Sakai 6-3, in the last eight. Price was last year’s runner-up in Bahrain after beating Littler in the semi-finals.

Second seed Luke Humphries is also through after a 6-0 win against Abdulla Saeed, while World Championship runner-up Gian van Veen defeated Man Lok Leung 6-2.

US says ‘all options on the table’ if Iran protest killings continue

The White House says “all options remain on the table” for the United States to take military action against Iran, reiterating that Tehran would face “grave consequences” if the killings of antigovernment protesters continue.

During a news conference on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said US President Donald Trump and his team had communicated to Iran that “if the killing continues, there will be grave consequences”.

“The president understands today that 800 executions that were scheduled and supposed to take place yesterday were halted,” Leavitt told reporters, without providing any evidence to back up the claim that the executions were stopped.

“The president and his team are closely monitoring this situation, and all options remain on the table for the president,” she added.

Her comments come just hours after Trump appeared to soften his tone after several days of threats against Iran, with the US president saying his administration would take military action against Tehran if more killings were carried out.

Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets since late December last year in mass demonstrations that were sparked by soaring inflation and the steep devaluation of the local currency.

The protests have spread to cities and towns across Iran, and activist groups say more than 1,000 demonstrators have been killed in the unrest.

The Iranian government, which describes the protesters as armed rioters backed by the US and its major regional ally, Israel, has said more than 100 security officers have been killed in attacks during the demonstrations.

Al Jazeera is not able to independently verify these figures.

Softened rhetoric

After days of heightened tensions and fears of a US military attack on Iran, Trump on Wednesday dialled down the rhetoric, saying he had received assurances that the killings of demonstrators had stopped.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also denied that Tehran planned to execute any protesters. “Hanging is ‌out of the ‌question,” he told the Fox News broadcaster.

The foreign minister had earlier this week said Iran is ready for war if the US wants to “test” it.

“If Washington wants to test the military option it has tested before, we are ready for it,” Araghchi said in an interview with our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic on Monday.

‘Great deal of uncertainty’

It remained difficult on Thursday to get information about what was happening on the ground in Iran as a nationwide internet blackout hit the one-week mark, according to online monitor NetBlocks.

But a resident of the Iranian capital, Tehran, said that security had been heavily reinforced amid continued uncertainty.

“There is a big military presence on the streets of the capital and elsewhere,” said the resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“There is a great deal of uncertainty. A lot of people are worried,” they said. “There is a lot of death, sadness and anger.”

A commander in Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also said the country’s armed forces remained on high alert.

IRGC Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Karami said the military was “ready at the highest possible level”, Iran’s state-run Press TV reported.

Separately, Iranian Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh warned that the government would use all its capabilities to “suppress the savage armed terrorists” it claims are behind the unrest.

In comments broadcast on Iranian state television, Nasirzadeh reiterated previous claims by the government that the demonstrations were orchestrated by the US and Israel.

The “designers and executors of the riots should know that we are monitoring them”, he added.

Meanwhile, despite Trump’s softening tone, Washington issued fresh sanctions against Iran on Thursday morning over the protest crackdown.

LIV ‘haven’t signed anyone who moves the needle’ – McIlroy

Rory McIlroy says the return of Brooks Koepka to the PGA Tour could suggest that the rival LIV Golf tour is in decline.

Koepka, 35, is back on the PGA Tour after controversially joining the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV series in 2022.

He has agreed to make a $5m (£3.7m) charitable donation as part of his return, will forego any payment from the FedExCup Bonus scheme during the 2026 season and will be ineligible for the Tour’s player equity programme between 2026-2030, which could amount to between $50-85m.

Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith have all indicated they will remain with LIV Golf but the lack of any new signings suggests that the power may be shifting, according to McIlroy.

“It’s not as if they made any huge signings this year, is it?” the Northern Irishman told The Daily Telegraph.

“They haven’t signed anyone who moves the needle and I don’t think they will.

“I mean, they could re-sign Bryson for hundreds of millions of dollars, but even if they do, it doesn’t change their product does it?

“They’ll just be paying for the exact same thing. And they’ve lost Brooks.”

Former US Open champion Wyndham Clark, who played in the 2023 Ryder Cup alongside Koepka, says he is “torn” on his compatriot’s return to the PGA calendar after turning down an approach from LIV himself.

“I personally really like Brooks, and I think it’s ultimately really good for the PGA Tour, but also, you know, a guy that had an opportunity to go to LIV, it’s kind of frustrating that he’s able to get the cake and also eat it,” Clark said.

Players need social skills for World Cup – Tuchel

Getty Images

England manager Thomas Tuchel says players will need the right “social skills” and personality to make his World Cup squad.

Tuchel only has two friendlies in March, against Uruguay and Japan, before naming his squad for the finals – where England will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in the group stages.

The former Chelsea manager has not been afraid to leave out big names such as Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden since replacing Gareth Southgate – and recalled experienced Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Tuchel says he needs the right balance in his squad – and not necessarily just the best players.

“When the players had the feeling that the right group is in camp, that they knew their role, why they are in camp, what is expected of them, and they had the feeling that the tournament could even go on for another four weeks and they would be happy to be together, then they were successful.

“It will be very important that we don’t select just for talent, but also for what we need from a player.

“What the social skills are of a player, is he a good team-mate? Can he support if his role is maybe the supporting role? So, this is where the focus is.”

England have reached the past two Euros finals and were World Cup semi-finalists under Southgate in 2018.

They face Croatia in Arlington, Texas on 17 June, at the start of what could potentially be a long tournament.

“We will have a lot of players out there who hopefully play until May for international titles, they will play for national titles and we will demand – the World Cup will demand a lot out of them,” Tuchel said.

“Then we will be hopefully six to eight weeks together if we make it until the very end.

“It will demand a lot of our social skills, how we are together as a group and we need to get the nomination right.
