‘I starred in iconic Christmas film but I never watch it for one reason’

The stars of one of the most popular Christmas films of all time says she hardly ever watches the movie despite being a popular choice for families over the festive season

One of the stars of an iconic Christmas film says she never watches her movie for one simple reason.

Kate Winslet starred in The Holiday in 2006 with Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black. The film, which has become a Christmas classic, sees two unlucky love woman – played by Winslet and Diaz – switch their homes on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite the huge commercial success of the film released almost 20 years ago, the Oscar-winning actress insists she hasn’t seen The Holidays for many years.

Speaking to the BBC, she admitted that she and her family “don’t sit down and watch films I’m in”.

The romcom shows Winslet, who plays Iris Simpkins, and Diaz arranging a transatlantic house swap over the Christmas holidays. Winslet spends the Christmas season in Los Angeles where she meets a love interest, played by Black.

Diaz’s character falls for Winslet’s on-screen brother, played by Law, when she stays in a cottage in the Cotswolds’ countryside.

The Holiday has become a popular move for families to watch at Christmas along with other seasonal films like Home Alone, Love Actually and It’s A Wonderful Life.

Winslet, who won the best actress Oscar for her role in The Reader while she has been nominated six more times, said she watches “almost everything” she has starred in just once.

She added: “When you watch the finished product, for most actors, that’s an excruciating experience. It’s something you kind of have to go through.”

Winslet also received best actress nominations for Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Little Children. She was put forward for best supporting actress for her roles in Sense and Sensibility, Iris and Steve Jobs.

The actress has recently gone behind the camera for the first time. Her directorial debut, Goodbye June, will be released on Netflix on Christmas Eve.

The film, written by her son Joe Anders, sees siblings navigating family tension as their mother, who is approaching the end of her life, undergoes palliative care during the holiday period. The screenplay was inspired by the death of Winslet’s mother, Sally, who died from ovarian cancer in 2017.

Explaining why she has decided to go behind the camera now, Winslet said: “Now is a time when I’ve felt that my children are grown up enough that I can be that little more absent, just mentally absent.

“I just don’t think I would have honestly had the time before now, because I’ve been a mum since I was 25 and that’s been my priority alongside acting, and that was already a bit of a juggle.”

Police Withdrawal: Don’t Deny Nigerians The Right To Extra Security — Rep Jimbo

A member of the House of Representatives, Clement Jimbo, has said that Nigerians who desire additional security personnel should not be denied access to such protection, insisting that the privilege must not remain exclusive to government officials.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, the Lawmaker representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency said “every single Nigerian is a VIP,” therefore, citizens who want security escorts or guards for their homes, travel, or events should be able to obtain them.

Jimbo anchored his argument on the Constitution, explaining that Section 14(2)(b) places welfare and security at the core of governance, while Section 214 establishes the Nigeria Police Force and Section 217 creates the armed forces, all designed to operationalise that mandate.

He said that in situations where government security resources are insufficient to cover the entire country, the President has the constitutional latitude to engage private security structures to support citizens who are willing to pay for personal protection.

According to him, many Nigerians, especially during the festive period, want to travel to their hometowns with properties and desire security personnel to accompany them.

He added that some citizens are ready to pay, but the federal government currently lacks the manpower.

Jimbo argued that with rising unemployment, the government has an opportunity to recruit able-bodied Nigerians into a special security pool that citizens can legally hire from.

He proposed the recruitment of 15,000 personnel, placed on a ₦150,000 monthly salary, saying Nigerians would subscribe to the service and generate over ₦2.2 billion monthly revenue, which he believes could fund police retraining, welfare, and broader reforms.

He noted that there were no immediate replacements for the security personnel who were withdrawn due to the large insecurity in the country.

“What gave rise to the withdrawal of some of these security personnel from some of us?

“It wasn’t because the country was totally safe, that okay, since the country is totally safe, we don’t need these personnel attached to you, again.”

“It is actually because of insecurity, and now you’ve withdrawn these people, and there is no immediate replacement. “

He urged the President, as Commander-in-Chief, to send an executive bill to the National Assembly to formalise the process, emphasising that no additional appropriation would be needed.

Jimbo concluded that Nigerians who want additional security attached to them should not be denied that responsibility, stressing that the right to personal protection belongs to all citizens, not only those in public office.

VIP Police Escort Withdrawal

His comments follow President Bola Tinubu’s reiteration of his order, on Wednesday, that police officers currently attached to prominent individuals be withdrawn and redeployed to areas ravaged by insecurity.

Addressing concerns raised over the security implications of the withdrawal, Tinubu directed the Minister for Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to work with the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to replace the affected police personnel with NSCDC officers.

“The Minister for Interior should liaise with the IGP and the civil defence structure to replace those police officers who are on special security duties so that you don’t leave people exposed.

“NSA and DSS to provide further information and form themselves into a committee and review the structure,” he stated.

Bonnie breaks silence on Bali arrest with dark plea as she learns her punishment

Controversial adult star Bonnie Blue has spoken out after her arrest with a defiant statement. Police and immigration officials have also issued a huge update on their investigation

Bonnie Blue has broken her silence with a brazen message after her arrest in Bali on suspicion of breaking strict ‘morality’ laws, as police and immigration officers decide her fate.

The controversial adult star was hauled into a jail cell last Thursday after furious locals told police that she had hired a truck to travel around the holiday island and film explicit content with “barely legal” students. Bonnie bragged about her lewd plans before flying over to Bali, encouraging lads who were in the country for “Schoolies” – an Australian post-high-school celebration – to come and join her.

As a Muslim-majority country, Indonesia takes a tough line on distributing, producing or publicly displaying adult content, and the star was potentially facing up to 15 years prison and a fine of about £270,000 if convicted of pornography offences.

Law enforcement found a slew of racy items in her rental studio, including “school Bonnie Blue” outfits, Viagra, condoms, cameras, flash drives and lubricant. Bonnie was arrested alongside 17 male tourists, but 14 of the men were released without charge while the adult star and three other men remained under investigation. The foursome were let out of jail but faced two days of questioning by immigration and had their passports seized.

The 26-year-old, real name is Tia Billinger, has since made her first statement since she was locked up. While walking into the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office in Jimbaran, south of Kutam, on Wednesday, she was quizzed on whether she planned on making more explicit content in Bali. Clearly unphased by the threat of prison time, Bonnie replied bluntly: “Subscribe and you’ll find out.” However, she was more coy about her when she was asked about whether she was heading home soon, reportedly remaining silent.

And now major update has emerged as police have provided fresh details about their investigation. Yesterday, it was confirmed that officials found no evidence of pornographic content, meaning Bonnie and three other men have escaped a conviction.

Aiptu Ni Nyoman Ayu Inastuti, Acting Head of the Public Relations Sub-Division of the Badung Police, said: “When they were raided, they were making collab content about a game where the winner would sleep with Bonnie Blue. No pornographic activities or acts have been found in the collaborative content.”

But that doesn’t mean she’s come away from the whole saga scot-free. Today, at a press conference outside the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office on Thursday, Immigration chief Heru Winarko confirmed that the adult star had breached her travel visa privileges, and would therefore be deported, Australia’s Daily Telegraph reports.

He explained: “They have misused the visa they have to make content in Bali. They will be black-listed from entering Indonesia for at least 10 years (that) could be extended. Once police has finished with the investigation, after that we will deport them and put them (on) the blacklist.”

At the same conference, Badung Police said that Bonnie and the three other men are now facing trial over the purchase of her blue “Bang bus” over its alleged lack of vehicle registration, local publication detikBali reports.

“One of the two British men in Blue’s entourage are also accused of not having an international driving licence while driving the open-back vehicle, seen in a slew of videos online,” the publication claimed. “While in Bali, BB (Bonnie Blue) should have been travelling, but instead she was creating content,” Police Chief Arif Batubara said.

The top cop added that the Bonnie’s purchase of a blue pickup truck for her content creation could be considered a violation, with the adult star and the British man Bonnie scheduled to appear in Denpasar District Court over the alleged offence on Friday.

It’s not the first time Bonnie has faced issued in a foreign country. She is also banned from Australia and Fiji after her plans to sleep with 18-year-old boys for content during ‘Schoolies Week’ infuriated Aussie parents. A 20,000-strong petition ensued, and her visa was revoked. However, last month, she brazenly bragged about the ban and insisted that she was still planning to go ahead with her controversial ‘Schoolies’ event despite the uproar.

“Every year the government and the middle-aged mums try to ban me from Schoolies,” she said in a video. “But this year it is impossible to ban me. With good lawyers, a lot of money, flights, villa, and the boys lined up, I cannot wait to do Schoolies 2025 bigger than ever.”

Israel prepares for Storm Byron, but not all citizens will get help

Israel is bracing itself for heavy downpours and flash floods that Storm Byron is forecast to produce, especially in the coastal areas.

The Israel Meteorological Service said on Thursday that rain is likely to cover cities from northern Israel to the Negev in the south, with floods possible in low-lying cities. Up to 150mm (5.9 inches) of rain is estimated in some coastal areas, with wind gusts of up to 90km/h (56mph).

The Israeli army chief, Eyal Zamir, issued safety guidelines for the military, cancelling all leave until 6am on Friday, prohibiting all outdoor training activities and limiting soldiers to “operational” and “essential” activities.

Israel has been on high alert. Cities across the country have taken measures to prepare for the storm, reinforcing emergency teams and opening shelters in case they are needed.

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Eli Cohen assessed the situation with various government bodies to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply during the storm.

In contrast, unrecognised Bedouin communities in southern Israel are bracing for disaster, hoping for a miracle. Close to 30,000 Palestinian citizens of Israel live in those communities without any basic services, including electricity, water, or infrastructure. Many of the homes and buildings in these communities are under demolition orders. They will face the brunt of the storm without recourse for help from Israeli authorities.

‘Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people’

Recognised non-Jewish towns in the Negev have a tense relationship with the state. On Wednesday, Omar al-Asam, head of the Tal al-Sabe Council, announced a strike to protest against the police blocking off the town’s only entrance and assaulting one of the residents.

“The police’s racist and aggressive conduct is unacceptable, and it goes to show the police’s racist attitude towards Arab citizens across the country, especially in the Negev,” al-Asam told local media.

This tension is a mainstay in Israel’s relationship with its non-Jewish citizens. In 2019, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Israel is not a state of all its citizens.”

“According to the basic nationality law we passed, Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people – and only it,” Netanyahu wrote on Instagram in response to criticism from Israeli actor Rotem Sela.

This attitude is part of Israel’s institutional discrimination against non-Jewish citizens, amounting to apartheid according to experts and human rights organisations. In the past two years, right-wing politicians have advocated for the expulsion of Palestinian citizens of Israel or conditioning nationality on loyalty. Some have repeatedly attempted to outlaw non-Jewish parties and expel members of Knesset, the Israeli parliament, most recently in June 2025.

Byron poses ‘lot of challenges’

Meanwhile, the occupied West Bank also faces serious challenges from the storm.

Youssef Abu Saadah, the head of the meteorological service in Palestine, told Al Jazeera, “The expected rain from Storm Byron is more than a third of the average yearly rainfall. This poses a lot of challenges.”

He clarified that flood warnings in the Negev are partly because of the downstream from the Hebron hills in the West Bank.
