One woman was killed and two others remain missing after the remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska. The storm displaced more than 1,000 people, destroying homes and causing record flooding in remote coastal villages.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has restated his belief that the detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, can only be resolved through a political process.
Speaking during a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday following his public defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Mbah said his position on the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu has remained consistent since he assumed office.
He said. “It took barely a week after I assumed office that I had a meeting with the President, and I was very specific when I came out to address the press that I also raised the issue of Nnamdi Kanu with the President.”
Governor Mbah explained that he had always believed that resolving the matter politically remained the most sustainable approach.
“I believe strongly that the Nnamdi Kanu problem is going to be solved politically,” he said. “With this now, I think it is also an opportunity for the South-East to consolidate our position and make a very strong case for this to be resolved politically.”

The Enugu governor urged stakeholders across the South-East to embrace the concept of a political resolution and to work collectively in shaping a unified position before engaging with the federal authorities.
“First of all, we need to accept the concept that this is the right thing to do,” he said. “Then, the details of implementation will be worked out because there will certainly be details. It is not something you can possibly outline now, but it’s for us to even accept the concept that this is the way to move forward.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had also criticised the prolonged detention of the leader of Kanu, describing it as “an open sore on our nation’s conscience.”
Atiku called for Kanu’s immediate release, insisting that his prolonged detention represented a grave violation of the rule of law.
The IPOB leader has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria in June 2021.
His detention has been marred by legal controversies, including multiple court orders granting him bail orders that have not been complied with by the prosecuting authorities.

One happy buyer beams: “I have had this around four months now. I wasn’t sure if to bother – I’ve had an IPL before (many years ago) and it was c**p. I am so glad I did! After a month, on the highest setting, I noticed a difference, and after two months, I saved maybe twice. I haven’t used any other hair removal for over a month, and I have no hair on my legs. Great for the holiday season and hot weather. It has also meant no ingrowing hairs, and my skin’s dryness has improved. My underarms are now at their ‘no hair’ stage (started about a month later), and my bikini line is in the early stage, but it’s looking great so far. Do follow the instructions. Have the highest setting where possible. Answer the surveys truthfully and finish the course it sets. It’s not an overnight win, why would it, but it will change your life.”
Another shopper raves: “I’m genuinely impressed with the results! I started noticing less hair growth and smoother skin on my arms, legs, and underarms after just my second session on all three areas. I honestly can’t recommend it enough; it’s super easy to use, and the way it leaves your skin feeling is incredible. I’m so happy with my Braun Skin i·expert Smart IPL!”
And a third notes: “I honestly didn’t expect this to work as well as it did. It felt like it could be gimmicky and probably wouldn’t work like the products in salons. I was totally wrong! I used it religiously for 6 weeks straight, and I saw incredible results! So much so that my husband wanted me to use it on him! I travel a LOT, and not having to shave my armpits or legs anymore is a HUGE flex. Buy this yesterday!”

Though not everyone was thrilled with their experience, as one customer shares their disappointment: “used as directed, but haven’t noticed any difference. Pretty bummed, especially with how expensive it is.”
Britain’s Emma Raducanu struggled physically in a three-set loss to world number 219 Zhu Lin in the first round of the Ningbo Open in China.
Raducanu, 22, faded badly against the Chinese wildcard, losing 3-6 6-4 6-1 in two hours 26 minutes.
She had her blood pressure and vital signs taken during the second set and was given something to eat and drink by the physio.
She also had a medical timeout in the third set for treatment on her back, with her movement and service motion visibly hindered from then on.
Raducanu has two tournaments – the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and the Hong Kong Open – left on her schedule this year.
Francis Roig, who has an agreement to coach Raducanu until the end of the season, is not with her in Ningbo.
Raducanu has played 50 matches on the WTA Tour this year, the most since her breakthrough US Open triumph in 2021.
The physical demands may be starting to show, with Raducanu’s movement falling away as former top-40 player Zhu extended the rallies to keep her on court for longer.
Raducanu won only 51% of points on her first serve and 38% on her second.
She raced into a 3-0 lead and served out the opening set despite four breaks of serve in the final five games.
She and Zhu exchanged breaks early in the second set before Raducanu asked for the physio. She left the court after Zhu forced a decider.
Raducanu grabbed at her back early in the third set after running for a forehand, and she made more errors as the match went on.
‘Season not ending how Raducanu envisaged’

The season is not ending as Raducanu had envisaged.
In Ningbo it appeared she had not fully recovered from last week’s illness, and her lower back problem, which flares up from time to time, hindered her mobility.
It is only two weeks since she had three match points to beat world number five Jessica Pegula in Beijing. But since that deciding set, life has been a struggle.
Ningbo was Raducanu’s 22nd tournament of the year, which represents a very full schedule.
Striker Robert Lewandowski has a hamstring injury and could miss Barcelona’s game against Real Madrid later this month.
The 37-year-old, who scored for Poland in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win against Lithuania on Sunday, will not feature in his club’s La Liga game against Girona this weekend.
Barcelona then face Olympiakos in the Champions League next Tuesday before taking on Real Madrid in El Clasico at the Bernabeu on 26 October.
Barcelona have not indicated how long Lewandowski is expected to be missing for, but Spanish media have suggested it could be about four weeks.
“Robert Lewandowski has suffered a hamstring injury in his left thigh. He will be sidelined, and his recovery time will depend on how the injury progresses,” Barcelona said in a statement.
Lewandowski, who has scored four goals in nine appearances for the La Liga champions this season, joins Raphinha, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Joan Garcia on the sidelines.

A savvy shopper was gobsmacked after bagging a “holy grail” find in a charity shop for just £7.52, despite its actual worth being significantly higher. Charity shops are often treasure troves of discounted items, ranging from designer apparel and handbags to quirky trinkets, vintage games, and much more.
One bargain hunter got a pleasant surprise after popping into a charity shop and spotting a sought-after item they’d been on the hunt for for months – a Singer sewing machine, complete with all its components and accessories, original packaging, and even the receipt indicating exactly when it was bought.
Sewing machines are practical, efficient tools found in numerous households worldwide. They’re perfect for mending and altering clothes, as well as for creative pursuits and projects.
Singer sewing machines are a hit among both seasoned and beginner sewers.
On its website, the brand boasts: “Today many of the vintage models are collector’s items and very much [sought] after. Singer sewing machines have the history.”
The price tags on these machines can vary – for instance, a Singer M2105 Sewing Machine is priced at £159 at full retail price, while the Singer Quantum 9985 Sewing Machine comes with an £879 price tag.
One Reddit user couldn’t contain their excitement after managing to snag a Singer machine for a mere £7.52.
Sharing a series of photos on the popular social media platform, they revealed: “My mom needed a sewing machine and has been looking for one, I passed on a few of them the past few months because I didn’t recognise the brand.
“[I] did see one that wouldn’t have been bad but was missing some parts so passed on that too.
“After a few months of keeping my eye out, this guy comes out on a cart! It’s not brand new, it is used but the receipt inside shows it was bought recently in 2021.
“Originally $149.99 (£112.92) got it for $9.99 (£7.52)! Even came inside the original box and all the instructions, receipt, and parts, and even some extras! Immediately bought it, brought it home, and it does indeed work!”
They ended their post by expressing gratitude to the original buyer “Judith” for donating such a sought-after brand and machine.
In a subsequent comment, they added: “My mom was going to buy a brand new one at the store and I convinced her that I could likely find one at the thrift store, I’m glad she listened to me! I definitely didn’t want her to spend the full price!”
In the comments section, fellow Reddit users were eager to share their thoughts. One person exclaimed: “so jealous!!”
