Fluminense Beat Al Hilal To Reach Club World Cup Semis

Substitute Hercules struck a 70th-minute winner as Brazil’s Fluminense defeated Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal 2-1 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Club World Cup.

A fine left-foot finish from Matheus Martinelli had put the Rio club ahead in the 40th minute but Al Hilal’s Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo levelled six minutes into the second half before Hercules stole the show to the delight of the vast majority of the 43,091 crowd.

Rio club Fluminense could yet face an all-Brazilian semi-final if their rivals from Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, are able to overcome Premier League Chelsea in Friday’s other quarter-final.

Al Hilal had pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament, beating Manchester City 4-3, to reach the last eight and Simone Inzaghi’s side fought hard until the end to keep their adventure alive.

They bow out of the tournament having been unbeaten through the group stage, including holding Real Madrid to a draw, and having truly made their mark on the world stage.

There was a moment’s silence before the kick-off in memory of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva who died in the early hours of Thursday after their car veered off a motorway in Spain and burst into flames.

Al Hilal’s line-up featured two of Jota’s Portugal team-mates in Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo.

The first half was a tight and tactical affair with few chances until Martinelli opened the scoring when he picked the ball up from Gabriel Fuentes inside the box and span out to give himself space for a left-foot shot that rocketed past Yassine Bounou.

Al Hilal went close to a quick response when Kalidou Koulibaly’s header forced Fluminense’s 44-year-old goalkeeper Fabio into a fine save.

The Saudi side were awarded a penalty when Samuel Xavier was ruled to have brought down Marcos Leonardo in the box but Dutch referee Danny Makkelie was eventually sent to the monitor where he overturned his own decision after seeing there had been no contact between the two players.

After going in at the break trailing by a goal, Al Hilal came out strongly for the second half and drew level when Koulibaly headed a Neves corner down to Marcos Leonardo who poked home.

Al Hilal’s Brazilian full back Renan Lodi had a let off when his poor backpass fell straight at the feet of German Cano but the Fluminense striker’s attempt to round Bounou was denied by the smart work of the Moroccan keeper.

But the outcome was settled with 20 minutes remaining when half-time sub Hercules saw a shot from distance blocked but from the loose ball Samuel headed the ball back to the forward who raced into the box and fired past Bounou to make it 2-1.

Al Hilal produced a flurry of corners and some intense pressure in the final minutes as they desperately sought a way to keep their dream alive but the Brazilians were good value for their victory.

Liam Gallagher thanks Oasis fans ‘for putting up with them over the years’

Liam Gallagher took a moment to thank fans for their support before he performed the final song of the night at the first Oasis reunion gig on Friday

Liam Gallagher thanked the 70,000 fans who attended Oasis’ first reunion gig in Cardiff for ‘putting up with them over the years’. The singer and his brother Noel had been at loggerheads for 16 years, with fans giving up on the idea that Oasis would reunite for another tour.

However, they shocked fans when they made the announcement last year that they would be embarking on an epic tour all over the world. Cardiff was blessed with the very first gig on Friday night, with the brothers holding hands and raising them to the sky as they waltzed onto the stage.

The likes of Champagne Supernova, Supersonic, Slide Away and more were performed tonight, with Noel pausing for a few bars while singing Half The World Away to take in the scenes in front of him.

They returned to sing the likes of The Masterplan, Don’t Look Back In Anger and Wonderwall before Liam thanked fans for supporting them.

He said: “Thank you, beautiful people. This is it. Nice one for putting up with us over the years. We are hard work, we get it. ” He briefly paused before announcing the final song – Champagne Supernova.

“Nice one for coming out,” he added with his arms, as per usual, behind his back.

Liam made several cheeky comments throughout the night. Earlier, he appeared to indicate someone in the audience, he said: “I see you’re still on the glue down here then? ”

Referencing the dynamic price surges, Liam at one point asked the crowd: “Are you having a good time? Is it worth the £40,000 you paid for a ticket? “

The hotly-anticipated tour was the culmination of months of speculation, a feverish ticket sale and a long 16 year wait from fans.

A shock comeback was unveiled in August 2024, with the band declaring: “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”

A chaotic rush for tickets followed with 17 dates announced across London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Dublin before the band announced more concerts in North America, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Chile and Argentina – giving fans around the world the chance to hear the hits live again.

Leigh go third in Super League with fightback to beat Wigan

Betfred Super League

Leigh (0) 18

Tries: Niu, Ipape, Trout Goals: O’Brien 3

Wigan (8) 8

Leigh Leopards scored three unanswered second-half tries to fight back and beat high-flying neighbours Wigan Warriors to move up to third in the Super League table.

A well-worked early try from Jake Wardle and an Adam Keighran penalty just before the break put the visitors 8-0 up midway through the third ‘Battle of the Borough’ of the season.

Tesi Niu grabbed Leigh’s hard-earned response early in the second half before Edwin Ipape finished an audacious team move in greasy conditions to put the hosts ahead for the first time.

While the Leopards can be overtaken in third if Leeds Rhinos upstage leaders Hull KR on Sunday, this win has them within three points of defending champions Wigan.

The night had started with a major blow for Leigh, as head coach Adrian Lam confirmed full-back David Armstrong would be ruled out for nine months with a knee injury.

The Australian had been included in the 21-man squad for the game against Wigan despite struggling with the injury in their defeat by Leeds a week earlier.

Wardle pierced the Leopards’ resistance after just five minutes, taking a short cut-out pass from Jai Field to dot down for the first time since grabbing a try in Wigan’s last win against Leigh in May.

The score from the decorated centre came in a week that he was called up for an England squad get-together that has had national team boss Shaun Wane calling for greater intensity from Super League’s biggest names as they prepare to take on Australia in the autumn Test series.

The clash of regional rivals delivered on Wane’s demand for a “low-scoring” game which has “teams going at it”.

While Leigh were kept scoreless in the first half, they went close through Frankie Halton, who failed to ground his finish after racing onto a grubber kick from Ipape, while Charnley should have done better to link up with Hodgson when in a promising position after breaking clear.

Leigh finally got their chance to respond thanks to Harry Smith’s attempted 40-20 kick that went long and out on the full.

The hosts made the most getting the ball back inside Wigan’s half, with Tonga international Niu weaving his way over from close range following clever work from Ipape and Lachlan Lam.

Ipape then went over himself at the end of a free-flowing move, with the ball passing through multiple hands before Umyla Hanley sent him clear to touch down under the posts.

‘Awesome win for Leigh’ – reaction

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam told BBC Radio Manchester:

“It was awesome and great to be a part of as usual. Being in Wigan borough it’s important that we got that win tonight.

“We needed to have a really strong performance here tonight and I thought we were really good in patches.

“Wigan made a few errors [in the second half] and we were able to capitalise on that, but I thought the way we created some tries and some opportunities off the back of our skill is everything we want to be as a club. “

On Armstrong’s injury: “I’m broken-hearted for him, the club, for the fans and players – he is loved by all the boys. He didn’t really get into his groove and there is so much more of him to show and that is what we can look forward to.

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet told BBC Radio Manchester:

“It was an intense game and Leigh were worthy winners.

“Second half they built pressure through their kicking game, their chase was very committed, and in these conditions it is a massive weapon. And we didn’t find out flow in the same area.

“We started well physically and committed to the game plan, but it was just that spell when the game swung in Leigh’s favour that I expected us to be more resilient.

“I certainly got a few things wrong tonight and I will learn from that and hopefully be better next week.

Leigh: Hodgson; Brand, Niu, Hanley, Charnley; O’Brien, Lam; Ofahengaue, Ipape, Trout, Halton, O’Neill, Liu.

Interchanges: Hughes, Tuitavake, Davis, McNamara.

Wigan: Field; Miski, Keighran, Wardle, Marshall; Farrimond, Smith; Dupree, O’Neill, Thompson, Nsemba, Farrell, Ellis.

Interchanges: Harvard, Mago, Byrne, Leeming.

England midfielder Gomes joins Marseille

PA Media

England midfielder Angel Gomes has joined nine-time French champions Marseille after his contract expired at fellow Ligue 1 outfit Lille.

Roberto de Zerbi’s Marseille had already reached an agreement in principle to sign the 24-year-old, who announced in May he would leave Lille at the end of his deal.

Gomes earned his first four senior caps for England under interim manager Lee Carsley last year, but has yet to feature under current boss Thomas Tuchel.

The midfielder began his career at Manchester United but left in 2020 having made just 10 appearances in all competitions, after making his debut as a 16-year-old in 2017.

He spent the past four seasons in Ligue 1, after initially being loaned to Boavista in Portugal, scoring 10 goals and providing 19 assists in 134 appearances for Lille.

[VIDEO] ‘So What?’ Wike Defends Use Of Rolls-Royce

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says those questioning his source of wealth know little about his background and has defended his usage of a Rolls-Royce.

A former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, had questioned Wike’s source of wealth during Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today, especially when he was spotted with the luxury car.

However, a day after, Wike said he was born into a comfortable family before taking up political leadership.

“I have a Rolls-Royce. So what? Nobody gave it to me. Before harmattan, there was cold. I didn’t come from the same background as Rotimi Amaechi,” the FCT minister said on Friday’s edition of the show.

“As a student, I was using a Mercedes-Benz. My father was the general manager of many companies. I will not say [my family was] too rich like the Dangotes. ”
