How can Liverpool afford Isak after spending so much?

Liverpool have spent more than £170m on players this summer yet are interested in adding Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak to their ranks.

With a package to sign Isak thought to cost up to £130m, it would take their summer spending to £300m.

The Premier League champions’ spending is a significant jump up from last year, when they shelled out only £10m on Italy winger Federico Chiesa and £25m on Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer window.

BBC Sport understands that, while Liverpool have explored other centre-forward targets, they have made a move towards a deal for Isak in recent days.

Liverpool have signed midfielder Florian Wirtz in a potential British record £116m deal this summer and paid £40m and £30m respectively for full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

Can Liverpool afford Isak?

Liverpool’s income has been boosted this year thanks to several key factors.

They received £175m in prize money for winning the Premier League; last season was the club’s first full campaign with an expanded Anfield Road End and a higher capacity; and from 1 August they have a new kit deal with Adidas which some reports value at £60m per season, more than their current partnership with Nike.

Those factors, combined with comparatively low transfer spending in previous windows, mean Liverpool find themselves well within the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) which limit clubs to losses of £105m over three years.

“Liverpool are a super smart football club,” football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport.

“They’re in an incredibly strong PSR position. Out of the top six clubs, they’ve spent the least in this three-year cycle – only £325m – and that includes their signing of Florian Wirtz.

‘Liverpool’s model has been to ignore the noise’

Over the past three seasons Liverpool have had a net transfer spend of -£4m, £96m and £53m respectively according to Transfmarkt.

For context, Manchester United have had a net spend of £119m, £133m and £190m over their past three campaigns.

“Liverpool have been outside the top-10 spenders on player signings since 2019, but their model is a classic case of being smarter rather than bigger,” said Maguire.

“Liverpool’s model has been to ignore the noise and only buy a player if they truly improve the squad. It’s a Moneyball, more analytical approach.

“Chief executive Michael Edwards does a brilliant job and he never buys players because of external pressure. He doesn’t get jittery when fans call for more signings.

Who else could be interested in Isak?

Newcastle have maintained throughout the summer that their top players – and Isak is certainly one of those – are not for sale.

Indeed, like Liverpool, Newcastle – who are owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) – are in a comfortable PSR position.

Isak has three years left on his contract, so the Swede would most likely have to actively push for a move.

Apart from Liverpool, few other clubs in the market for a striker could afford Isak’s reported £130m price tag.

“As the most profitable club in Premier League history, Arsenal could easily spend over £200m in the window and have no PSR concerns,” said Maguire.

Despite Isak having been linked with a move to Arsenal, the Gunners are instead expected to reach a full agreement with Sporting for the 73.5m euros (£63.5m) signing of striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Manchester City are unlikely to be in the market for a striker, with Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush under lengthy contracts.

It seems doubtful that United would be able to afford Isak’s fee without significant player sales, having missed out on Champions League football next season.

Chelsea have bought strikers Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this window.

Sometimes the best summer staples are those that are effortless and easy to style, and can be worn in multiple ways. That’s why when Millie Mackintosh shared that she had just three wardrobe essentials to get her through summer, fans were quick to beg for details on her looks.

One of her standout pieces was a black broderie midi dress, which hails from LoveShackFancy for £446 – but it’s now completely sold out everywhere. However Millie offered up several alternative options on her LTK page which help you get the look for considerably less, including the Black Tiered Lia Midi Dress from Nobody’s Child that was our personal favourite.

Just like her designer version, the Nobody’s Child dress has puff sleeves and a subtle V-neckline which bares some skin whilst still being modest enough to wear anywhere from the office to a wedding. The V-neck features a feminine bow detail at the bottom, with a fitted waist that helps accentuate your shape.

Although Millie’s LoveShackFancy dress has a more streamlined midi skirt, the Nobody’s Child Lia Midi Dress has a tiered design, which gives it some extra volume and movement, making it extra flattering and adding a subtle touch of drama. It’s also much more affordably priced at £69, saving you almost £400.

The main difference between the two, however, is that the Nobody’s Child dress is missing the broderie details of her designer one. If you do want these extra details, we found some other great options like the Cutwork Detail Midi Dress from Boden, which retails for £130.

Boden’s midi dress has broderie-style cut out details along the hemline and neckline, and fastens with a tie belt around the waist. We also love the Black Broderie Midi Tea Dress which also hails from Boden, but is now on sale at Next down from £155 to £75.

Other great options include the Mango Broderie Gathered Cinch Waist A-Line Dress, which you can pick up for £79.99 at ASOS and has a more tailored, fitted silhouette with a flaring A-line skirt. We also spotted another Nobody’s Child option, with the £85 Black Broderie Anglaise Sophia Midi Dress having a comfortable shirred bodice, puff sleeves and broderie details throughout.

However the Black Tiered Lia Midi Dress from Nobody’s Child that Millie suggested also comes in three other colours; red, butter yellow and a ditsy floral pattern, all of which are perfect for summer. It’s also available in sizes four to 18.

It currently only has one review, which is a five star rating saying: “Lovely dress very comfortable.”

Buhari: NIPR Chair Ayetutu Calls For World-Class Hospitals In Nigeria

Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Lagos Chapter, Samuel Ayetutu, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s healthcare sector to end the country’s overreliance on foreign medical facilities.

Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, on Wednesday, Ayetutu reflected on the broader implications of Nigerian leaders seeking medical treatment abroad.

He noted that the late president’s passing has highlighted the inadequacies of the country’s health infrastructure and the need for decisive action.

Reflecting on Buhari’s death in a foreign hospital, he urged Nigerians and policymakers to seize the moment as an opportunity for critical reforms.

“It provides us with yet another chance to look at what is wrong with us. How come we’ve been able to throw so much energy behind ensuring we refine petroleum products in Nigeria with Dangote Refineries? Why can’t we throw that kind of energy behind developing world-class hospitals, institutions of higher learning, and research centres?” Ayetutu queried.

“When it comes to Nigerians using facilities abroad, whether in the medical area or education, regardless of whether the person is in government or a private citizen, there are reasons why that happens but the issue is As a nation, is it dignifying for us to be running helter-skelter in other countries to seek services which, in some cases, our citizens are the ones providing abroad?,” Ayetutu said questioning the dignity of such dependence, especially when Nigerian professionals are often at the forefront of providing these services overseas.

“That is not something I think many Nigerians have been happy with,” he added.

He acknowledged that citizens often hold the government accountable for such lapses, given its central role in shaping the nation’s systems.

“It is normal for people to put the blame at the doorpost of those running the system because the government controls the destiny of the people.

“I say to people, after God, the most important person is that person called the government. The only thing is that it is, to an extent, abstract,” Ayetutu observed.

Former President Buhari died at the age of 82 in a clinic based in London on Sunday, and was buried at his residence in Daura Katsina State on Tuesday.
