Brazil’s Lula slams Trump, says there is no ‘logic’ to US tariff threat

By 234Radio in News, World News
After US President Donald Trump threatened Brazil with 50% tariffs and demanded that Jair Bolsonaro’s trial be overturned, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has stated that his nation will not comply with American instructions.

President Lula stated in an interview with CNN on Thursday that the tariffs have no “logic,” but that he does not believe there is currently a “crisis” between his nation and the US.

It surprised me, Lula said, “not just the value of that tariff, but also the manner in which it was announced.” “We cannot let President Trump forget that he was elected to rule the US and not to be the world’s emperor.”

Foreign leaders like Lula have expressed anger over the US president’s overt stance on economic relations with other nations, which he sees as Trump’s attempts to impose on Brazil on matters of trade and domestic judicial proceedings.

Former Brazilian president Bolsonaro, who has ties to Trump and his family, is currently facing a trial for allegedly trying to oust Lula’s victory over him in the 2022 election.

Trump called the trial a “witch hunt” and demanded that it end. He also faced legal issues as a result of his efforts to stay in office after losing an election. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, and other right-wingers have recently done the same.

Brazil’s judiciary branch is self-governing, according to the statement. Bolsonaro, the president of the republic, is not being judged personally, but rather by what actions he attempted to organize a coup d’etat, according to Lula, who claimed that Bolsonaro “is not being judged personally.”

Brazil will face higher tariffs if it continues to participate in the BRICS, a group of developing nations that has been promoting alternatives to the US-backed global financial system.

Trump has threatened to impose higher tariffs on any member nations who are associated with the bloc and attacked the organization for “anti-Western priorities.”

Trump’s threats and direct use of US economic leverage have sparked outrage in Latin America, where the US has a long history of heavily involving itself in various nations’ domestic affairs.

Lula remarked that Brazil should take care of Brazil and the Brazilian people, as well as not to take care of other people’s interests.

Police Arrest 11 Students Over Killing Of Colleagues In Kano School

By 234Radio in News, Nigeria News

Following the brutal murder of two of their fellow students, authorities in Kano State have confirmed the arrest of 11 students at the government-run boarding secondary school in Bichi.

The Kano State Police Command is looking into the incident, which shocked the neighborhood.

The two deceased students, Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, are alleged to have been attacked by their peers using locally produced metal “Gwale-Gwale” objects.

The students are currently being interrogated to determine their roles in the killings, according to the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, who confirmed the arrests on Thursday.

In a message to Channels Television, Haruna stated that “eight students were detained over the incident, and the investigation is still pursuing the level of their individual involvement.”

He assured the general public that the command is committed to bringing justice to the victims and their families.

“We take this issue seriously,” we say. Once investigations are finished, the culprits will be charged, he added.

This unfortunate event has deeply sadden the Ministry of Education. Mohammad stated during the visit that we have launched an immediate investigation and will cooperate with security forces to stop this from happening in the future.

It’s heartbreaking, they say.

Under the condition of anonymity, a teacher at the school described the incident as “the most disturbing” in recent memory.

“This is something we never expected.” The teacher said, “It’s heartbreaking to lose such young lives in such a violent way.

Parents and guardians in the community want more security measures and swift justice for school buildings.

The bodies of the deceased students were being deposited at the Bichi General Hospital morgue at the time of this report, and a post-mortem examination is anticipated to be performed.

Spain’s Bonmati ‘Grateful’ For Euros Bid After Meningitis Scare

By 234Radio in News, sport-news

After recovering from a brief bout of viral meningitis that briefly threatened her tournament, Aitana Bonmati is feeling well ahead of Spain’s quarter-final match against Switzerland at Women’s Euro 2025.

As World Cup winners Spain fight for their first-ever women’s European Championship victory, two-time Ballon d’Or winner Bonmati will begin in Bern on Friday.

She made her debut appearance of the tournament last week with a 3-1 victory over Italy, which secured top spot and nine points in Group B. Due to her illness, she made substitute appearances against Portugal and Belgium.

Read more about Arsenal signing Liverpool’s Smith for a women’s world record deal.

“From one day to the next, I was feeling great, and then, bam, something brand-new, a negative, and uncomfortable experience.” And you must endure, Bonmati told reporters on Thursday.

“Fortunately, I can say I can play in the quarter-finals today.” I must be appreciative.

I’ve had a difficult few weeks, and I want to enjoy myself because I haven’t been able to do much, I said. I’m hoping I can deliver.

Noelle Maritz, a Swiss defender, hopes that the Swiss will reach the final four of a significant international women’s tournament for the first time thanks to fervent home support at Wankdorf Stadium.

Although playing in front of so many people in such a large stadium is truly special, we all anticipated a positive atmosphere. Aston Villa defender Maritz told reporters, “The energy of the fans really pushes you on.”

“We had a really special moment when we won Group A and faced Finland, and the crowd cheered us.” Our fans had a wonderful time, and it was great to share such an original experience. Tomorrow will be filled with lots of energy, according to me, thanks to the fans.

Switzerland have a tough task ahead of Spain, who scored 14 goals in their three group games but is still under less pressure to win than their rivals, who are the favorites to win the trophy later this month.

Coach Pia Sundhage said, “I think the pressure is on now, and we have a chance,” and it’s a quarter-final.

We stood up and said, “This is so much better than it was just a few weeks ago,” during our five-versus-five training session.

“And I think a portion of that is that we are able to deal with the pressure because there has been a lot of pressure.”

On Wednesday in Zurich, the winner of the match from Friday will face either France or Germany in the semi-finals.

2024 WAFCON: History At Stake As Nigeria’s Super Falcons Face Zambia

By 234Radio in News, sport-news

The Super Falcons will want to stop the Nigerians from making the final four of the competition for the first time when they face Zambia in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The third-place match at the 2022 edition of the championship was recreated in the Friday blockbuster game. The Super Falcons were defeated by the Zambians in that year, guaranteeing that Nigeria would not finish on a podium.

With seven points, Nigeria advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition. Before drawing with Algeria, they first won their first two games.

The 2018 WAFCON winners have scored no goals in three games this year, demonstrating an unquestionable defensive record in Morocco. They have been unimpressive in front of goal, enjoying the majority of possession in games but being unable to make that count, in part because their defense is water-tight.

In their final group game against Algeria, Nigeria had 24 shots on target, with only two of those coming.

The Copper Queens, however, have one of the tournament’s deadliest attacks, unlike their foes. They scored six goals to place them second in Group A, earning both analysts and fans praise.

However, the third-place finishers in 2022 have conceded three goals so far, a flaw that the Super Falcons would like to exploit.

Watch the matches between Zambia and Nigeria on ESPN.

The Super Falcons display a mix of young and experienced players, as is customary for multiple-time champions.

Even though Asisat Oshoala has received criticism for her performance in Morocco, she is one to watch for her one goal so far in the competition. If Nigeria wants to beat Zambia on Friday, the six-time African Women’s Player of the Year must rise to the occasion.

Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo is another player worth watching in addition to her. The Pachuca striker has scored twice, including the late winner against Botswana, in the search for the Golden Boot.

When the game begins at Casablanca, Morocco’s Stade Larbi Zaouli, she will be relying on her to perform the same magic.

Given their pace, strength, and finishing ability, the trio of Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, who have three goals each, will be a struggle for the Nigerian defense.

The women’s player of the year award is currently held by Banda. In the women’s continental competition, her pairing with Kundananji has become one of the most feared attacking pairs so far.

Head-to-Head Record for Zambia and Nigeria

Nigeria and the Copper Queens have faced off three times at the WAFCON. In the group stage, the Super Falcons defeated them 6-0 in 2014 before a 4-0 defeat in Ghana in 2018. The Southern Africans, however, won the bronze medal game with a 1-0 victory over their rivals in 2022 with the final laugh.

‘Tool of a tyrant’: Former FBI head James Comey’s daughter fired by Trump

By 234Radio in News, World News

President Donald Trump was immediately fired from her position as a federal prosecutor in the United States, according to Maurene Comey, the daughter of James Comey, the former FBI director.

Comey stated in a memo to coworkers that “fear may permeate the decisions of those who remain” if a “career prosecutor can be fired without reason.”

She urged people to “do not allow that to occur.” Fear is a tyrant’s tool for preventing independent thought, according to the saying.

The Department of Justice’s assistant US attorney position in New York was terminated one day after Comey was given the memo.

Comey’s firing is not yet being explained by the Trump administration. However, her association with her father, who oversaw an investigation into alleged collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election, had long been seen as vulnerable.

Trump quickly removed the elder Comey from his first term, but the former FBI director has remained the subject of the president’s concern.

James Comey has criticised Trump’s “unethical” and mafia-like leadership in both congressional testimony and a 2018 book. Additionally, he claimed that Trump’s decision to fire him was an attempt to derail the Russia investigation.

Trump and his allies have urged the Department of Justice to remove all employees who had been tasked with handling matters he disagreed with since taking office for a second term.

Prosecutors who assisted special counsel Jack Smith in the prosecution of Trump’s two federal criminal indictments, one for withholding confidential information while he was in office, and the other for trying to sabotage the election of 2020, are included.

When Trump won the re-election in November 2024, both cases were dropped. The Justice Department’s policies prohibit the prosecution of a sitting president.

More career prosecutors and support staff members who were involved in Smith’s indictment were terminated, according to a report from The Associated Press earlier this month.

The Justice Department’s independence has been undermined by the Trump administration’s decision to fire these employees, claim critics. Many people also point out that career civil servants, regardless of political party, do not pick their cases and instead serve under whatever presidential administration is in power.

Maurene Comey urged her fellow prosecutors to use their current situation to further their cause by utilizing the rule of law’s fair and impartial approach in her message to colleagues.

Let this moment fuel the fire that is already burning in this location, she wrote, “instead of fear.”

“A fire of righteous disgust at power abuses.” of commitment to bring the victims’ justice. “Truth is the foundation of all belief.”

a seasoned attorney

Prior to her dismissal, Maurene Comey had worked for the Southern District of New York, which was frequently regarded as one of the nation’s top prosecution offices.

Most recently, she had prosecuted Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was found guilty of transporting marijuana for the purposes of prostitution but later found innocent of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.

Prior to now, she had participated in Ghislaine Maxwell’s successful prosecution of sex-trafficking allegations involving Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of underage girls.

Attorney General Pam Bondi’s firing comes as a result of the base of Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) campaign’s criticism of her for disclosing more information about Epstein, including a detailed account of his alleged “client list.”

In a 2019 Manhattan detention center, Epstein committed suicide.

Laura Loomer and other prominent right-wing internet figures have voiced their opposition to Bondi and demanded that Comey be fired.

Additionally, according to US media reports, James Comey and John Brennan, a former CIA director, are being investigated by the Trump administration for their investigation into Russian election interference.

The US intelligence community came to the conclusion that Russia had a role in the election, but there was insufficient evidence to support the claim that the Trump campaign had a collusion with Russian agents.
