BBC workmen ripped apart Steve Wright’s old studio in week he died, Jeremy Vine reveals

Jeremy Vine, a presenter for BBC Radio 2, described how workers showed disrespect toward older staff members and ripped apart Steve Wright’s former studio.

BBC workmen ripped apart Steve Wright’s old studio in the very week that he died. The Radio Two presenter passed away in February last year aged 69 from a ruptured stomach ulcer.

Two years prior, he had been fired from the station’s wildly popular weekday show, which irritated his audience. He had continued to host his Sunday Love Songs program.

Now details have emerged that when the BBC moved out of Wogan House in London in the spring last year, their timing for tearing out rooms and removing equipment could not have been worse.

Radio 2 host Jeremy Vine has revealed: “Steve Wright – what an amazing man. “His studio was torn out in the week he died very sadly because they were changing offices and of course the way they tear these things out is not particularly respectful of the history of all the machines that were in there because Steve had asked for them.. that microphone was Steve’s microphone!”

When word got out that “Whitney” had passed away, according to Vine, who also hosts a Channel 5 daytime show, the station staff were crying.

And he had to comfort a newsreader who was close to him in particular, but a workman’s lack of compassion prevented that from happening.

He continued, “When he passed away, there was a particular news reader who was very close friends with him, and she was very upset because she was in the newsroom and she discovered that he had passed away because she had seen the script for it. Terrible .

We left, and I said, “Let’s go and talk about it.” We ignored the fact that this was all part of this significant office relocation, and there was a sign outside (his old studio) that read “Do Not Enter.”

We enter the studio, talk to each other, hug each other, cry, and then appear on camera as a man opens the door and says, “Excuse me, can you not read this sign?”

“I apologize, but I can see that my friend is about to launch a ballistic missile.” She responded, “This is our church! ” which is a fantastic line. How deep all this runs, I thought.

Vine, a former Strictly contestant, acknowledged that the BBC employs many younger employees who are unaware of the station’s history or the legendary radio presenters who contributed to the organization’s development. Vine also acknowledged that this was a depressing sign of the times. And he soon realized how easily well-known DJs can fade away as a result of a recent incident.

At the Bath Literary Festival, the author, who just released a murder mystery called Murder On Line One, explained that one of his producers, who are currently 22 or 23, had reportedly pulled this enormous lump of metal out as they were clearing out the desks in the former Wogan House.

“And it was a bronze bust,” the people asked, “Who the hell is this?” A man was wearing a collar and a tie. And I responded, “Look at the name!” And they turned it around and said, “Jimmy Young.” Who’s that? ‘

Guys, he’s been running the show for 29 years, I said. However, it served as a reminder of the generational gap, which is always present. And I suppose a lot of broadcasters are concerned about that.

On the same weekend that Steve tragically passed away, Radio 2 moved out of Wogan House and all the studios were shut down, according to a BBC spokesman. Steve’s microphone was saved, mounted on a stand, and prominently during the recent BBC celebration of his career. The event was captured on camera and will be broadcast later this year.

Russo Leads Arsenal’s Quest To Slay Barcelona Beast In Champions League Final

Barcelona will face Arsenal in the Champions League final on Saturday, but Alessia Russo, the team’s current striker, thinks the “world class” Gunners can defeat the all-conquering Catalans.

At Sporting Lisbon’s Jose Alvalade stadium, Barcelona have won their fifth successive Champions League final, defeating English champions Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the final four games.

Arsenal are the only English club to have ever captured the title in 2007 with the UEFA Women’s Cup.

The London side’s return to the forefront of women’s soccer, with their 60,000-capacity home at Emirates Stadium, has been confirmed by famous victories over Real Madrid and Lyon.

Just a few months after the Red Devils rejected a damals women’s world record bid of £500,000 ($671,000), Russo left Manchester United and joined the Arsenal project in 2023 on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old had risen to fame and had won the hearts of England with her displays in England’s Euro 2022 trumph on home soil.

She also distinguished the Lionesses’ line as they reached the World Cup final a year later.

However, Russo struggled to live up to the hype surrounding her arrival in a difficult first season, where Arsenal failed to advance to the knockout stages of the Women’s Super League (WSL) and finished third overall.

However, Renee Slegers’ appointment as Arsenal’s new manager injonas Eidevall has sparked a change in both the club and Russo’s fortunes.

After netting 12 goals for Manchester City, she was named the football writers’ women’s player of the year earlier this month.

However, Russo has really shined in the Champions League, scoring seven times as Mariona Caldentey, teammate, and second-place scorer in the final.

That included a quick-fire double against Madrid, helping Arsenal defeat a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Lyon 3-0 in the semi-final second leg.

Every forward will claim that they have, at some point, not scored as many goals as they would have liked, and that being a striker is frequently judged on your goals, Russo told talkSPORT.

I’ll say it all the time, “I want to score more, I want to keep pushing.”

It’s my job to just get on the end of it, even though it’s never really seems like I’ll be satisfied, but it’s been nice and it’s been good to get some consistency. ”

Arsenal faces a team that has defeated them before in the previous five years, and that will now face an acid test.

Russo continued, “We know how good they are, and we know how consistent they are on the highest level.”

I believe that our ball-handling abilities are outstanding when we perform at our best. We have a lot of different play and attack styles, so I believe we can be world-class when we’re on it, and we certainly have shown that this year. ”

Five Dramatic CAF Champions League Finals

The CAF Champions League — previously called the African Cup of Champions Clubs — has produced many dramatic two-leg finals since its inception 61 years ago.

AFP Sport recalls five of them ahead of the first leg of the 2024-2025 final between Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and Pyramids of Egypt in Pretoria on Saturday.

1976

Mouloudia Alger became the first African champions from Algeria by staging the greatest second-leg comeback in the history of the competition.

Trailing 3-0 after the first leg against title-holders Hafia of Guinea in Conakry, Mouloudia won the return match by the same score thanks to a 90th-minute goal from Omar Betrouni.

Aggregate equality meant the final went straight to penalties. The home team converted three consecutive spot kicks to win the shootout 3-1 as the visitors missed three of four attempts.

ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast were so confident of overcoming Orlando Pirates of South Africa that the government declared the first working day after the second leg a public holiday.

But the newcomers to Africa from Soweto had other ideas and a breakaway goal from Jerry Sikhosana in the second half gave Pirates a 1-0 win in Abidjan and a 3-2 overall triumph.

The match in the Ivorian commercial capital was one sided with Pirates ‘ Nigerian goalkeeper Williams Okpara and centre-backs Gavin Lane and Mark Fish repeatedly defying rampant ASEC.

Hearts of Oak became the second club from Ghana after arch rivals Asante Kotoko to become African champions, beating Esperance of Tunisia home and away for a 5-2 aggregate victory.

Esperance were leading 1-0 in the second leg in Accra after 75 minutes when goalkeeper Chokri al Ouaer deliberately injured himself and claimed he had been hit by an object from the crowd.

The bloodied shot-stopper wanted the match to be abandoned, but the South African referee waved play on and Hearts scored three times in the final seven minutes for a 3-1 second-leg victory.

2007

Tunisian club Etoile Sahel pulled off the greatest shock in the history of the competition by defeating Al Ahly of Egypt 3-1 in Cairo after a goalless first encounter.

Then president Hosni Mubarak was among the capacity 70, 000-plus crowd and no one outside Tunisia gave Etoile a chance against arguably the greatest Ahly team yet to compete in Africa.

A couple of added-time goals sealed success for Etoile and reduced Ahly icons like Essam el Hadary, Wael Gomaa, Mohamed Aboutrika, Mohamed Barakat and Emad Meteb to tears.

2010
Democratic Republic of Congo giants TP Mazembe inflicted on Esperance the heaviest defeat in one leg of a final by winning 5-0 in mining hub Lubumbashi.

Ngandu Kasongo and Zambian Given Singuluma each scored twice as the ‘ Ravens ‘ ran riot against opponents traditionally renowned for defensive strength.

Shattered Esperance changed goalkeepers for the return match, but could manage only a 1-1 draw and Mazembe celebrated back-to-back titles after edging Heartland of Nigeria the previous year.

Made In Chelsea’s pregnant Tiffany Watson rushed to hospital weeks before due date

Tiffany Watson, the star of Made in Chelsea, has been taken to the hospital with concerns for her newborn. The TV star’s ten-day-old daughter has a high heart rate and the pregnant woman has been battling the flu.

She revealed that she had been drained on social media. She was dehydrated during a routine appointment, according to doctors.

Due to the baby’s size and high heart rate, Tiffany, 31, said, “We went to get tested for gestational diabetes once more this morning.”

I simply can’t stop this flu I have. It’s been ten days, roughly. My entire pregnancy went smoothly, but it’s turning out to be very difficult at the end.

Tiffany shared a picture of herself in the hospital bed (tiffanyc_watson/Instagram).

Hope I’ll be better soon, she continued. When doctors became concerned for Tiffany and her baby while she was receiving treatment for gestational diabetes in a hospital.

The reality star revealed her pregnancy to the Mirror in January, telling it that she and husband Cameron were considering having a second child.

Jude, their son, was born in June 2023, and they are already proud parents. Tiffany learned in October that she was anticipating once more. Tiffany made the joke that, “My period was late, so I peed on stick, ran down, and told my husband,” back when she found out.

The soon-to-be-mom-of-two claimed that she and her 29-year-old husband, a professional football player, “absolutely wanted another one” and that they were actively trying to “expande their family.”

Tiffany added that she has given Jude, her son, as much information as she can. We do say that Jude can say the word “baby,” and he frequently lifts my jumper up, stroke my stomach, and kiss it, according to Tiffany. I’m not sure if he is aware, though.

She and husband Cameron are expecting a boy.

Excited Tiffany and her husband Cameron have already discovered the gender of their second child, a boy.

The couple were able to choose a name for their child after learning about it from their partners, but it wasn’t simple for her and her husband Cameron to agree on.

I kept going through lists of names, and my mother would constantly send me ridiculous names, and Cameron said, “You’re just forcing this, you need to stop,” she said.

We weren’t reaching an agreement on any, though. He had two names: one he loved and the other two I didn’t like, and the other two I adored. Then, once we learned the gender, we could concentrate on one side, for example.

However, Tiffany has a name that we haven’t yet discovered. On January 1st, we made the decision, but we hope to stick with it because we both enjoy it and don’t change our minds much. Because we don’t appear to share the same taste, I believe we must stick with this one.

Oasis reunion tour sparks fan frenzy with strict new entry rules and safety measures

As the band prepares to make their first tour in more than a decade, the band is gearing up for one of the most eagerly awaited reunions in music history.

Fans heading to Oasis’ highly anticipated reunion gigs at Manchester’s Heaton Park this summer have been issued new guidance regarding crowd management and ticket access.

The shows include four back-to-back sold-out dates at Heaton Park between July 11 and July 20 as part of a highly anticipated tour that kicks off in Cardiff on July 4 at the Principality Stadium.

Richard Ashcroft and Cast are among the supporting acts. Despite the fact that the majority of the tour’s stops are in traditional stadiums, Heaton Park’s standing-only, open-air layout has prompted organisers to implement additional safety measures.

The Safety Advisory Group has recommended that the venue be divided into two designated areas: a general admission area and a front standing area closer to the stage in order to accommodate the anticipated 80, 000-capacity crowds. Ticketholders are now invited to indicate their desire to use the front section.

An official message sent to attendees reads, “The Safety Advisory Group for the Heaton Park shows have divided the concert arena into two areas, each with a dedicated ticket and entry gate issued in advance.

Organisers claimed the move was made “to ensure fan safety and enhance the fan experience when entering the site.”

The email contains a link that enables ticket holders to request front standing access. Tickets will be chosen randomly from the applicant pool if the number of opt-in requests exceeds the number of available tickets, the email added. Applications close at 12:00 PM on May 30; final placement announcements should be made by June 20.

“Please take note that you cannot split up your orders if you opt in. You don’t need to do anything if you’re content to stay in the general admissions area, the message stated.

Noel Gallagher also recently described the band’s preparations in a TalkSPORT interview: “I’m in the studio just noodling around. In about three weeks, rehearsals will begin, and yes, we’ll see what happens.

Oasis Live’s 25-date reunion tour, Oasis Live’25, is scheduled for July 4, 2025 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, and it will wrap up on November 23, 2025 at Brazil’s Estádio Morumbi in So Paulo.

Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin are the venues for the UK and Ireland leg. Notable events will take place between July 11 and July 20, at London’s Wembley Stadium, and at London’s Heaton Park, which will stage six shows from July 25 through August 3.

In August, Dublin’s Croke Park and Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium will both host three concerts. The band will play in North America, including Mexico City, Chicago, New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Toronto following the European dates.

The tour will then extend to Asia and Oceania, with stops in South Korea, Japan, and Australia, before concluding in South America with performances in Argentina, Chile, and Brazil.

US investment Firm RedBird to buy UK’s Daily Telegraph newspaper

The publisher of the 170-year-old Daily Telegraph newspaper in the United Kingdom has agreed to pay about $674 million (500 million pounds) to a consortium led by US investment firm RedBird Capital Partners.

Redbird announced on Friday that it had reached a definitive agreement to become the Telegraph Media Group’s controlling shareholder, ending the conservative-leaning newspaper’s lengthy takeover saga.

The sale, according to Gerry Cardinale, the founder and managing partner of RedBird, “beginns a new era for The Telegraph as we look to grow the brand in the UK and internationally, invest in its technology, and expand its subscriber base.”

The Barclay family’s former home, The Telegraph Group, was sold two years ago to pay the family’s debts. The Spectator, a weekly newsmagazine and the Daily and Sunday Telegraph, are all closely related to the UK’s Conservative Party.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family and vice president of the United Arab Emirates, was the recipient of an offer to purchase the publications in 2023.

The UK government, which introduced legislation to enact laws to restrict foreign government ownership of the British press, led to the consortium’s withdrawal last year.

IMI, an affiliate of Abu Dhabi, will become a consortium member with a minority stake of no more than 15% in the Telegraph. British authorities must approve the sale.

RedBird has invested in the football team AC Milan, the parent company of the Liverpool football team, and Skydance, a film production company.

“RedBird Capital Partners have exciting growth plans that build on our success,” according to Telegraph Media Group CEO Anna Jones, who also will unlock our full potential across the breadth of our business.
