King Charles III arrives in Canada amid tension with Trump

In response to President Donald Trump’s calls for an annexation of Canada’s northern neighbor, King Charles III, the British monarch, has arrived in Canada for a two-day visit that officials claim will bolster its support for the nation’s sovereignty.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s party won the general election last month amid Trump’s threats, and the monarch’s trip, which started on Monday, invited him.

After gaining its independence from Great Britain in 1867, Charles is the ceremonial head of state in Canada.

The King will make his first “Speech from the Throne” address in Canada since 1977, which will be delivered by a British monarch on Tuesday.

Charles is expected to convey a message of support for Canada in response to Trump’s statements, despite the British monarch’s recent policy of not interfering with politics and continuing to be a symbol.

According to Ralph Goodale, Canada’s envoy to the United Kingdom, “the prime minister has made it clear that Canada is not for sale now, is not for sale ever.”

The king’s authority and strength will be strengthened by that statement.

As a result of the ongoing trade dispute between the two nations, Canadian officials have publicly refrained from making Trump’s comments that their nation should become the country’s 51st state. Carney told Trump that Canada is “not for sale” during a White House visit this month.

Since becoming king in September 2022, Charles will make his first trip to the former British colony with his wife, Queen Camilla.

The royal couple’s visit has “profound significance,” according to Governor General Mary Simon, the monarch’s ceremonial representative in Canada.

Simon, who is the first Indigenous person to hold the position, said in a statement, “it reaffirms the enduring constitutional bond that has shaped Canada’s journey to become a proud and independent nation.”

The king is unlikely to make any explicit statements against Trump during his visit, according to Justin Vovk, a royal historian at McMaster University.

“They are going to be disappointed if they are expecting to hear Donald Trump mentioned or “the 51st state” mentioned,” Vovk told Al Jazeera. The King is required to operate in a very small constitutional box.

He added that support for Canada will be “concerned in very generic terms.”

According to Buckingham Palace, the royal couple will visit an Ottawa park on Monday and meet with artists and vendors. After planting a tree in another area of the city, the king will perform a ceremonial puck drop to start a street hockey demonstration.

Russell Brand’s festival axed after rape charge as fans demand refunds

The planned “Community” wellness festival, which is the work of comedian and actor Russell Brand, has been postponed due to inclement weather and public outcry.

Russell Brand’s wellness-themed ‘Community’ festival has been cancelled amid declining ticket sales and rising demand for refunds, following the comedian’s recent rape charge. Brand, 49, was formally charged by the Metropolitan Police in May with multiple offences, including a charge of rape, indecent assault, and controlling or coercive behaviour. The alleged incidents involve four women and span from 1999 to 2005, during a period when Brand was active on television, radio, and in film.

On May 3, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard the allegations. Brand spoke only to confirm his name, birthdate, address, and bail conditions. He previously refuted all claims, claiming that he had never been a rapist and that all of his previous relationships were consensual. The festival, which was scheduled for July, was scheduled to last three days and feature performances by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, massage, meditation, and live music. Laura Gallacher, the wife of Brand, was also scheduled to address the gathering.

The festival, which Brand had previously referred to as “about personal awakening and social change,” was a result of his recent shift toward wellness and spiritual reflection. According to his website, it was a gathering for “camping, discussion on spirituality, wellness, healthy living, and our environment.”

Brand urged attendees to think about eco-friendly travel in a sustainability message, noting that “audience travel typically accounts for the most carbon footprint of an event.” Please take into account alternative modes of transportation that use less carbon: bus, coach, or public transportation.

The cancellation has not been formally addressed by Brand. However, ticket sales have been halted, and a message on ticketing platform The Ticket Sellers confirms: “Please note: this event has now been cancelled, more detail may be contained in the event text below. If you have purchased tickets for this event, then please contact us on 0121 472 6688 or email refunds@TheTicketSellers.co.uk.”

As part of Brand’s rebranding as a wellness advocate and spiritual commentator, the festival came after a comparable event that took place in Hay-on-Wye in 2023.

The criminal case includes four separate allegations. One woman alleges she was raped by Brand in a hotel room during a Labour Party conference in 1999. According to court testimony, the assault occurred after the woman returned from the bathroom and was pushed onto a bed.

In 2001, a second woman claimed Brand attempted to drag her into a TV studio men’s toilet after he grabbed her forearm and punched her.

A television worker Brand, who he met in Soho in 2004, claims he forced her to have oral sex and groped her breasts.

The fourth allegation involves a woman who worked at a radio station while Brand was presenting Big Brother’s Big Mouth. She alleges that he grabbed her face, kissed her, and groped her.

The allegations first came to light in September 2023, following a joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches. In response, Brand posted a video denying the claims and said he welcomed the chance to prove his innocence.

French Open 2025

Dates: 25 May-8 June Venue: Roland Garros

Britain’s Katie Boulter finally landed her first French Open main-draw victory at the age of 28 after Jacob Fearnley won on his debut against former champion Stan Wawrinka.

Boulter, ranked 38th in the world, overcame a tense start to win 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-1 against French world number 231 Carole Monnet.

“I’m really pleased with myself,” said Boulter, who could play reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the second round.

“I sometimes find it really difficult on this surface and I’ve kind of persevered and tried my hardest to bring some good tennis.

“This one is special for me and it’ll go in my books.”

Also playing in front of a partisan opposition crowd, 55th-ranked Fearnley made smooth progress with a 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-2 victory over the popular 40-year-old Wawrinka.

The pair were joined in the second round by Emma Raducanu, who fought through “feeling sick” to beat China’s Wang Xinyu earlier on Monday.

However, Jodie Burrage was unable to complete a British clean sweep on day two of the clay-court Grand Slam event.

Fearnley keeps cool to silence crowd

Fearnley was only three years old when Switzerland’s Wawrinka made his French Open debut in 2005, but had the benefit of youthful vitality – if not clay-court experience – over the three-time major winner.

Wawrinka beat Novak Djokovic to lift the trophy in Paris ten years ago but has since dropped to 138th in the world rankings.

Fearnley, meanwhile, had never played an ATP Tour match on clay before this year.

The 23-year-old from Edinburgh was ranked outside of the world’s top 500 just 12 months ago but has risen rapidly up the rankings to a career-high of 55.

After clinching the opening set via a tie-break, Fearnley broke early in the second and raced out to a 4-1 lead before serving the set out to love.

Wawrinka, who knocked Andy Murray out in the first round last year, dropped serve immediately in the third set but fought back to move level at 2-2 – much to the delight of the crowd on court 14.

Their joy was short-lived as Fearnley quickly restored his lead and won four straight games to wrap up victory.

On overcoming the pro-Wawrinka crowd, Fearnley said: “There were a lot of guys talking to me. It was mostly in French. They could have been saying nice things, but I doubt it.”

Fearnley has now won on his main draw debut at each of the three Grand Slams he has featured at so far – Wimbledon, the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

French Open 2025

Location: Roland Garros, May 25 – June

After Jacob Fearnley defeated former champion Stan Wawrinka in his first main-draw match, British star Katie Boulter, 28, finally won the French Open championship at age 28.

Boulter, who is ranked 38th in the world, triumphed over Carole Monnet, who is ranked 231 in the world, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

Boulter, who could face Madison Keys, the reigning Australian Open champion, said, “I’m really pleased with myself.”

“I occasionally find this surface to be very challenging, but I’ve persevered and made an effort to make this surface as good as possible.”

This one will go in my books because it is special to me.

In addition to winning in front of a partisan opposition crowd, 55th-ranked Fearnley advanced to a 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-2 victory over the well-known 40-year-old Wawrinka.

Emma Raducanu, who had earlier fought through “feeling sick,” to defeat China’s Wang Xinyu in the second round, joined the pair.

On day two of the clay-court Grand Slam competition, Jodie Burrage was unable to finish a British clean sweep.

Fearnley maintains a cool climate to avert unheard noise.

Fearnley had the advantage of youthful vitality, if not clay-court experience, over the three-time major winner when Switzerland’s Wawrinka made his French Open debut in 2005.

Ten years ago, Wawrinka defeated Novak Djokovic to win the title in Paris, but she has since fallen to 138th in the world rankings.

Fearnley, however, has never before this year competed on clay for the ATP Tour.

The Edinburgh-born 23-year-old has quickly moved up to a career high of 55 from where she was previously ranked outside of the top 500 just 12 months ago.

Fearnley broke early in the second and jumped out to a 4-1 lead before serving the set to love after clinching the opening set via a tie-break.

Wawrinka, who beat Andy Murray in the first set last year, fought back in the third set to keep the score at 2-2, much to the delight of the court’s audience.

Fearnley quickly restored his lead and won four straight games to seal the victory for them, but their joy was brief.

Fearnley remarked, “There were a lot of guys talking to me when I was able to get past the pro-Wawrinka crowd.” The majority of it was French. I don’t know if they were saying nice things.

Fearnley has already triumphed at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open, three Grand Slams in a row, as well as his main draw debut.

Prince Harry makes surprise trip to China just as Charles starts historic Canada visit

Prince Harry has made a surprise solo appearance in China after travelling on an unannounced trip to Shanghai. The Duke of Sussex has attended a global travel and tourism conference in the city, where he gave a keynote speech urging the travel industry to support sustainable travel and tourism and shared climate goals.

The trip is in his role as co-founder of Travalyst, an organisation promoting sustainable travel. His appearance in China came just as his estranged father King Charles was due to arrive in Canada for a historic visit, which has been dubbed a a sign of strength and support for the country amid a war of words with Donald Trump.

The royal couple are due to land in Ottawa this evening marking the first time that Charles has been on Canadian soil since he became King and head of state of the country. Tomorrow he will attend the country’s state opening of parliament.

It is the first time that Harry has visited China. Prince William has visited the country in the past travelling there in 2015 for the first royal visit to China in 30 years. The King has never visited the country.

During his address to the Envision 2025 Global Partner Conference today, Harry told the travel industry it needed to work together to achieve climate change targets before the 2030 deadline. He also added that the Asia-Pacific region is “strongly positioned to do this”.

Speaking at the conference, he said: “Climate change isn’t just an environmental challenge – it’s a critical business emergency, costing the global economy $143 billion dollars annually.

“Now is the moment for the industry to reaffirm its commitment to being a force for good. Challenges will undoubtedly rise, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my life, it’s that meaningful change never comes easily. The true measure of our commitment is how we respond when the path becomes difficult. We must never give up.”

Harry’s trip comes following reports that Harry will be launching his own commercial venture in the next few months and the same time as concentrating on his Invictus Games Foundation – and it will be one of the first tasks for the Sussex’s newly formed team of advisors.

In recent months, Meghan has basked in the limelight launching her lifestyle brand As Ever and Netflix show With Love, Meghan after the couple appear to have decided to pursue different career paths.

A source told the Mail On Sunday: “Harry is unkindly described as the ‘spare’ to Meghan’s endeavours. In reality, he has been giving her the space to flourish. Now it is his time to throw himself into exciting new work. Invictus will always come first, but he has also been working on commercial ideas of his own.” The Mirror has contacted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s representatives for comment.

News of Harry’s commercial venture comes after it was revealed he left a charity “completely gobsmacked” with an unexpected move that follows in the footsteps of his wife, Meghan.

It emerged that the Duke of Sussex has thanked a community project based in Nottingham by making a ‘significant’ donation to help fund its services. The charity, Himmah, says the undisclosed sum will fund more than 650 much-needed food parcels for vulnerable families in the city.

Harry’s donation comes four years after the Duchess of Sussex donated £10,000 with funds from The Royal Foundation for the charity to purchase equipment and fund the Salaam Shalom Kitchen, a joint Muslim and Jewish community project offering hot meals and groceries.
