When and where is Uefa Super Cup?

The Uefa Super Cup will take place in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday, 13 August at 20:00 BST when Paris St-Germain face Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25,000-seater Stadio Friuli – home to Serie A club Udinese – will become the 13th venue to host the fixture since it switched away from Monaco in 2012.

The annual match, which pits the Champions League winners against the Europa League victors, will have a new winner this season as former runners-up PSG face debutants Spurs.

PSG secured their place after a 5-0 victory against Inter Milan in the Champions League final, while Spurs booked their spot by beating Manchester United 1-0 in May’s Europa League final.

What is the Uefa Super Cup?

The trophy was devised by Dutch reporter Anton Witkamp to decide who was the top club side in Europe.

Ajax beat Rangers over two legs in the inaugural competition in 1972, but the concept wasn’t officially recognised by Uefa until a year later.

The Super Cup was first played between the winners of the then European Cup and the winners of the Cup Winners’ Cup.

After the latter was discontinued by Uefa in 1999, the fixture became an annual clash between the Champions League winners and the now Europa League victors.

Despite the addition of the Conference League in 2021, the winners of that competition do not compete for the Super Cup.

How do Uefa choose a stadium for the Super Cup?

The Uefa Super Cup was hosted by Monaco from 1998 until 2012, but has been played in 13 different locations since.

The venue is now decided by individual football associations bidding to host major Uefa matches, before the executive committee makes the final selection.

Uefa states that all member associations can bid to host finals, but bids can’t be made by FA’s that are suspended, excluded or dissolved, or have an affiliated club and/or national team suspended from participating in Uefa competitions.

In the initiating phase, Uefa invites members to declare their interest to host a final. A list of interested members is then reviewed.

If successful, bid requirements are then made available for associations, who can submit their bid dossier to Uefa by a specific deadline.

Once the dossier is examined and the proposed stadiums are visited by Uefa, they have to provide detailed information regarding requirements and format of the site.

What is the Uefa Super Cup prize money?

Winners of the trophy will receive five million euros (£4.3m) in prize money, while the runners-up get four million euros (£3.4m).

China, Brazil can be models of ‘self-reliance’ for Global South, Xi says

Chinese President Xi Jinping has suggested that China and Brazil set an example of “unity and self-reliance” in the Global South, Chinese state media has reported.

In a phone call on Monday, Xi told Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that China was ready to work with Brazil to be a model for other countries and build a “more just world and a more sustainable planet”, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

Xi told Lula that China-Brazil ties were “at their best in history” and the “alignment” of the two countries’ development strategies was making “smooth progress”, Xinhua reported.

“Xi also said that China backs the Brazilian people in defending their national sovereignty and supports Brazil in safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests, urging all countries to unite in resolutely fighting against unilateralism and protectionism,” Xinhua said.

Lula’s office said the two leaders agreed on the role of the Group of 20 and BRICS in “defending multilateralism”, discussed efforts to negotiate peace between Russia and Ukraine, and committed to expanding cooperation to sectors such as health, oil and gas, the digital economy and satellites.

“Both presidents also emphasised their willingness to continue identifying new business opportunities between the two economies,” Lula’s office said.

Lula also reiterated the importance of China for the success of the COP30 world climate conference in November in Belem, Brazil, his office said.

The two leaders held the discussion as United States President Donald Trump’s trade salvoes are spurring calls for greater cooperation among emerging economies, including China and Brazil.

In an interview with the Reuters news agency last week, Lula said he planned to contact the leaders of the 10-member BRICS group, which includes India and China, to discuss the possibility of a coordinated response to US tariffs.

Trump last month announced a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods, and on Monday he signed an executive order extending a pause on a 145 percent tariff on Chinese goods until November.

David and Victoria Beckham’s heartbreaking response to Brooklyn’s wedding says it all

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz flooded their social media pages with cosy snaps of their vow renewal surrounded by family – but crucially nobody from Brooklyn’s side was invited to the nuptials

Brooklyn and Nicola looked more loved up than ever after they renewed their vows

David and Victoria Beckham’s son Brooklyn is sure to have driven a dagger to their heart with his latest stunt. The wannabe chef and his billionaire heiress wife Nicola Peltz stunned fans by sharing pictures of their extravagant vow renewal that they didn’t invite a single Beckham family member to.

The pair took to Instagram last night to flood their social media feeds with cosy photos of them enjoying their special day, with not a single person from Brooklyn’s side in any of them. Bride Nicola was seen surrounded by her loved ones – and even wore her mum’s wedding dress to honour her – while Brooklyn’s mum was thousands of miles away in England.

Nicola’s dad Nelson also took a starring role as he officiated the ceremony as the young couple gazed into each other’s eyes in front of a collection of the actress’ carefully selected friends and family.

Brooklyn and Nicola opted to renew their vows just three years after getting married in a $3million bash at the Peltz family’s sea front estate in Florida. It’s understood that their estrangement from Brooklyn’s family was first sparked on their big day, with reports of disagreements with Victoria over the wedding gown and a song choice she was said to have ‘stolen’ from the couple.

Despite the distance between the parties, David and Victoria have maintained a stoic bond with their eldest son – regularly liking his Instagram photos and including them in their posts, even though they are not talking.

However, their response to Brooklyn’s latest uploads suggest that the feud may have hit an all time low.

Neither David, Victoria or brothers Cruz and Romeo have responded to any of the photos, choosing to neglect the supportive ‘likes’ they normally share on Brooklyn’s photos.

The sad move was not unnoticed by fans who said it was ‘heartbreaking’ to see the family falling apart before their eyes in the latest blow.

“Awful behaviour Brooklyn. Remember where you came from and who supported you in the early days. You’ve been brought up better than this,” one fan told him.

“Your father and mother do not deserve such treatment,” criticised another. “Disgusting treatment of two people who dedicated their lives to you. You will regret it someday,” fumed another.

While a third warned the wannabe chef: “When you have a child you will also realise that that child is forever yours as well. You would be heartbroken if that child decides that they are not forever yours.”

However, others took Brooklyn’s side amid the feud and praised him for standing by Nicola in the fallout. “I love how you always have your wife’s back first! As it should be,” said one while another praised him for breaking rank to support his wife, “A husband that stands by his wife no matter what is a REAL MAN.”

Sources have claimed that not only were David and Victoria not invited to the vow renewal, they didn’t even know it was taking place.

As a result, no one from Brooklyn’s side of the family was in attendance, leaving it entirely down to Nicola’s loved ones to support the pair.

On top of his family being snubbed from the event, all of Brooklyn’s UK-based pals were left out of the invite list for the event in Los Angeles on August 2.

Signs of a rift have steadily been showing between Brooklyn and the rest of the Beckhams, with cracks having already been spotted at the pair’s original wedding. Since then, Brooklyn has opted to shun his family, going as far as to snub his own father’s 50th birthday plans and his knighthood.

David and Victoria Beckham are said to be devastated after son Brooklyn, 26, failed to invite them, or any of his relatives, to his secret vow renewal with wife Nicola Peltz amid ongoing rumours of a family feud.

The couple, who first wed in 2022, married again on August 2 in Westchester County. Nicola wore her mother’s 1985 wedding gown, while her billionaire father Nelson officiated the ceremony. No members of the Beckham family were present, with relatives reportedly learning of the event from a US website instead of being told.

Brooklyn’s absence from David’s 50th birthday had already fuelled talk of a rift, but sources claim this latest move “was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria.” It comes after David, 50, made a huge gesture on social media towards son Brooklyn amid the family rift.

An insider has claimed that David and his wife Victoria, 51, have been left heartbroken after learning about the vow renewal online.

“Seeing Nelson having such a pivotal role at the ceremony was heartbreaking for David especially. Not one member of the 30-plus extended family knew about the wedding, or were invited. His grandparents are devastated too as Brooklyn has always been so close to them,” the insider said.

“It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that. This is a family who feel they have lost their precious boy – and see no way back.

“Honestly, they are now questioning why he even wants to keep the ‘Beckham’ surname – will he revert to Peltz? August 2nd 2025 – is this the day Brooklyn formally declared himself no longer a part of the Beckham family? It certainly feels like it,” the source told The Sun.

Not only were Brooklyn;s parents David and Victoria left in the dark, but so too were his three siblings Cruz, Harper and Romeo, as well as his grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Nicola, 30, posted a series of pictures of the event, including a family line-up as she announced the news that she and Brooklyn had renewed their vows. One picture appeared to show her billionaire father Nelson Peltz officiating the service.

A source told The Mirror: “It must have been very upsetting to find out this way.”

Brooklyn and Nicola had only been married three years before renewing their vows on August 2. Speaking about the ceremony at the weekend, Brooklyn said: “We just wanted a really beautiful experience – a really cute memory.”

“To be honest, I could renew my vows every single day with her. I think the most important thing that someone can do is find that person that they’re going to spend the rest of their life with. It definitely shapes you as a person. Yeah, it was really, really cute. It was really fun.”

While Brooklyn was tying the knot with Nicola again, his parents and his siblings were taking a trip around the coast of Italy on the £16million yacht.

Victoria posted a handful of holiday snaps of herself and David soaking up the sun with Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14.

Sources close to Nicola have previously insisted there is no chance of reconciliation with David and Victoria at the moment given the “highly charged atmosphere.”

Two dead, 10 injured in explosion at US steel plant in Pennsylvania

Multiple explosions at a US Steel plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania have killed two people and injured 10, according to the company and local authorities.

The blasts at the Clairton Coke Works – part of a sprawling industrial complex along the Monongahela River – took place just before 11am Eastern Time (15:00 GMT) on Monday.

Firefighters battled flames and heavy smoke that billowed out of the plant, which is owned by US Steel, a subsidiary of Nippon Steel.

Initially, two people were reported missing. One person was found and transported to a local hospital, said Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph at an afternoon briefing.

There was no word yet on the possible cause of the explosion.

The investigation into the explosion would be “a time-consuming technical investigation”, Joseph said.

David Burritt, president and chief executive officer of US Steel, said in a statement that the company was working with local authorities to discover the cause.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on X that there were multiple explosions at the plant and that his administration was in touch with local officials.

“The scene is still active, and folks nearby should follow the direction of local authorities,” he wrote at the time the employee was missing.

The severity of the injuries was not known, but news accounts said several people were taken to hospital burn units.

Steel sector in decline

Clairton Mayor Rich Lattanzi said it was a horrible day for the city, about 32km (20 miles) south of Pittsburgh, long known as the US Steel City.

US Steel has produced steel in the area since the late 19th century, but in recent decades, the industry has been in decline, leading to plant closures and restructurings.

In June, Nippon Steel, Japan’s biggest steelmaker, closed its $14.9bn acquisition of US Steel after an 18-month struggle to obtain United States government approval for the deal, which faced scrutiny due to national security concerns.

While air quality monitors did not detect a dangerous rise in sulphur dioxide after Monday’s explosions, residents within 1.6km (1 mile) of the plant were advised to remain indoors, close windows and doors, set HVAC systems to recirculate, and avoid activities that draw in outside air, said Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato at the briefing.

The Clairton Coke Works is the largest coke manufacturing facility in the US, employing about 1,300 workers. It operates 10 coke oven batteries, which produce about 4.3 million tonnes of coke a year.

These eight players will help you win FPL

Have you settled on your Fantasy Premier League team yet, or are you still at the tinkering stage?

Either way you may want to consider one of these players in your team, according to our FPL experts.

Headshot of FPL expert PrasBBC Sport

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool, defender, £6m

Picking defenders in FPL has always been about three things – clean sheet potential, attacking threat and reliability of starting consistently. The new rules around defensive contribution points gives us an important fourth aspect to consider.

Van Dijk starts almost every game and Liverpool kept the most clean sheets in the league last season. But it’s the defensive contribution points where the Dutchman also shines. Of all the defenders priced at £6m this season, he would have gained the most defensive contribution points (22) in 2024-25.

Attacking threat? He has that too. Last season, Van Dijk was joint-top among defenders for headed efforts (21) and joint-sixth for shots in the box (23).

He is the perfect ‘set and forget’ defender to enable using the free transfers elsewhere.

Dominic Solanke, Spurs, striker, £7.5m

New Spurs manager Thomas Frank has history of setting his team up to ensure his leading striker gets big chances consistently. Ivan Toney and Yoane Wissa hit 20 and 19 goals respectively in recent seasons.

Add to this the fact that Son Heung-min’s departure has left a big gap of goalscoring duties and potentially penalties for Solanke to fill. It doesn’t get better than a home game against the promoted Burnley in gameweek one.

Headshot of FPL expert FPL HeisenbergBBC Sport

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United, midfielder, £9m

Fernandes is a great option this season for his consistent output and durability – he’s rarely injured and usually plays 90 minutes. In a struggling Manchester United team last season, he still combined goals (eight) with assists (12) and he should improve on those numbers this campaign.

The Portuguese midfielder has many routes to points – penalties, set-pieces, open-play assist threat and decent goal threat too. This season we can also have defensive contribution – he would have earned 22 extra points last season.

Iliman Ndiaye, Everton, midfielder, £6.5m

Ndiaye is an exciting budget pick this season – he’ll be looking to beat last season’s Premier League goal tally of nine.

Priced at £6.5m, he offers excellent value with Everton’s favourable early fixture run. Five of their opening seven fixtures provide Ndiaye with the potential for attacking returns as they face Leeds, Brighton, Wolves, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Importantly, Ndiaye has been reclassified as a midfielder this season – but his role in the team will be to support the centre-forward as much as possible.

He’s also on penalty duty for the Toffees, which is hugely important in FPL.

Headshot of FPL expert Holly ShandBBC Sport

Chris Wood, Nottingham Forest, striker, £7.5m

Wood looks like he could be great value once again this season, with Nottingham Forest having excellent opening fixtures against Brentford, Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Promotion to the Europa League means no midweek fixtures for his side in August, and keeping Morgan Gibbs-White, one of Forest’s best creators, in this window is another key positive.

Wood scored 20 goals last season, making a fast start to the campaign. A full pre-season will help him, after injury hampered the latter stages of 2024-25.

Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa, midfielder, £7m

Rogers has increased in price this season but should remain great value after amassing 19 goal involvements last campaign.

He is a reliable player, who regularly completes 90 minutes. Villa have enticing early fixtures, extending across the opening eight gameweeks.

Headshot of FPL expert Gianni ButticeBBC Sport

Murillo, Nottingham Forest, defender, £5.5m

Both Nottingham Forest centre-backs are excellent options again this season and, even with price rises to £5.5m, they no doubt will both reward owners early on with their favourable fixture run.

While Nikola Milenkovic has the higher ceiling with his greater goal threat, Murillo has the higher floor. The Brazilian is better than his team-mate for both bonus points and the new defensive contribution points, where based on last season he would pick up the addition two points in over half his games.

Only a handful of defenders in the league can match Murillo’s combined totals for tackles, blocks, interceptions and clearances.

Florian Wirtz, Liverpool, midfielder, £8.5m

The German is the new chief creator at Liverpool and has impressed pre-season, playing as the number 10. He’s combined well with Mohamed Salah and appears to be on all set-pieces other than penalties.

In the past two seasons in the Bundesliga he’s picked up an impressive 46 goal contributions (21 goals, 25 assists) in 63 matches, and has equally impressive stats in the Champions League and at international level.
