Morata criticises Galatasaray as loan ends early

Alvaro Morata says he had “no choice” but to give up part of his salary in order to leave Galatasaray, as the club failed to honour certain commitments.

The 32-year-old Spain captain joined the Turkish Super Lig club on loan from AC Milan in February, with an option to buy for 10m euros (£8.6m), but his contract was mutually terminated earlier this week.

Morata is now on the verge of securing another loan spell, this time with Italian Serie A side Como, who are managed by his former Chelsea team-mate Cesc Fabregas.

After thanking Galatasaray fans on Instagram for their “affection, warmth, and support”, Morata wrote: “Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about my experience with the club.

Morata signed for Milan last summer from Atletico Madrid on a four-year contract but was sent on a year-long loan in February to Galatasaray until January 2026.

The ex-Juventus and Real Madrid striker said he also had to forego other contractual rights he had already earned through his work, adding the figure Galatasaray published in their statement was not accurate.

“For me, in life and in work, there are principles that should never be broken, such as respect for each person’s rights,” added Morata.

“Failing to recognise and compensate what has been earned is, to me, unacceptable and contrary to the values of fairness and professionalism I believe in.

“I know these matters are often not spoken about openly, but I believe it is right to give the fans the real explanation of what happened.”

River Island’s £35 ‘Taylor Swift’ dress that was £85 matches new ‘Showgirl’ era

Swifties can now match with their favourite singer with this sparkly orange dress

Taylor Swift fans have been thrilled today, August 12, after the hit Eras Tour star announced that her 12th studio album will be coming out soon. Talking on her boyfriend and his brother’s popular podcast, New Heights, early this morning, at 12.12am, she said her new record is called The Life Of A Showgirl.

She kept the album cover hidden, and the rest of the artwork has yet to be revealed, but we know this upcoming ‘Showgirl’ era will have a colourful theme of orange and green. Taylor Swift’s current profile picture on her social media accounts is a glittery orange padlock on top of a green background.

The official Taylor Swift store is already teasing fans with pre-orders, and the aesthetic features a warm, orange, autumnal glow with a hint of glitter. To mark the news of her upcoming album, numerous fashion retailers have dropped the price of their orange and green coloured garments. For instance, River Island has reduced the cost of several orange shirts, tops, dresses and shoes.

One particular piece of clothing perfectly matches Swift’s glittery orange padlock, and it has dropped in price considerably. The high-street store’s Orange Sequin Embellished Slip Midi Dress was £85, but it can now be purchased for just £35.

The dress features all-over sequins to create a glittery effect, much like the promotional art for ‘TS12’. Its bright shade of orange is also a fantastic match. The slip dress finishes just above the ankles and includes a cowl neckline.

Sizes vary from a UK size six to a 16. The model wearing the Orange Sequin Embellished Slip Midi Dress in the pictures online teams the gown with black strappy heels, a thick gold bracelet and gold earrings.

If you are looking to match Taylor Swift’s latest album, there are plenty of other orange and green items to consider besides River Island, such as this Never Fully Dressed sequin tank top co-ord that’s available on ASOS for £79. New Look is selling this AX Paris Green Printed Slit Hem Maxi Dress for £48. Another option for something a bit different is this rose gold plated Philip Jones Padlock Necklace with Zircondia Crystals for £9.99.

If you like the look of River Island’s £35 Orange Sequin Embellished Slip Midi Dress, it can be bought online and delivered to your door for an extra £4. However, delivery is free on orders over £65. There aren’t any reviews for the dress on River Island’s website, but for those keen for customer feedback, reading through reviews on Trustpilot may help.

On the website, one shopper who left a five-star review said: “Love River Island staff members and managers are so helpful and friendly l love their clothing and accessories brillant store hope the survive as the best shop on high street for great quality clothing shop nowhere else.”

Another said: “River island shoes and clothes are true to size and I only shop from River Island. I shop from River island at least twice a month.” A third put: “Great range of quality clothing. Sizing is accurate and store staff are always helpful. Love shopping here!”

However, some unimpressed shoppers left comments. One wrote: “Sizing is awful!!! I’m a size 10 normally so I ordered some high waisted shorts in a 10. Couldn’t get them to do up at all!! Ordered a 12 and the exact same thing!! Went straight back.”

A second said: “Products arrived in good order but I paid for a specific delivery day and this was not honoured.” A third claimed: “I used to like River Island but the last couple of times I’ve ordered clothes they have been sent stuffed into bags that are too small for the items and have had strong smells.”

UFC £5.7bn broadcast deal may be ‘terrible’ for fighters

Retired MMA legend Georges St-Pierre says the UFC’s new broadcast deal with Paramount could be “terrible” for fighters.

The UFC announced on Monday it had signed a seven-year deal with Paramount which would bring most pay-per-views to an end in the US – with events appearing on Paramount’s streaming service or on CBS TV network.

The deal is reportedly worth more than £700m a year, or £5.7bn in total, an incredible increase from the £370m five-year deal the UFC had with ESPN previously.

St-Pierre, a two-weight UFC champion and an all-time great, questioned where the deal leaves fighters – especially those who negotiated a cut of pay-per-view sales.

“It could be good for the UFC, as a promoter, [but] terrible for the fighters because when I was competing I was able to have a great argument to negotiate on my contract,” St-Pierre told Covers.

“I could tell the UFC, ‘hey, if you want me to do all the promotion, I want to become a partner. I want a piece of the pie to negotiate a part of the pay-per-view revenue’.

“Because if I’m doing all the promotion, I’m helping you, but you need to help me. You need to make me a partner.

“So it might be a bad thing for the fighters in a way that they have less leverage [to negotiate more money].”

Jake Paul, who has publicly feuded with UFC president Dana White over fighter pay since swapping YouTube for boxing, said athletes now have a “clear picture” of what the UFC’s revenue is.

“No more PPV excuses. Get your worth boys and girls,” he added.

Most UFC fighters have either a flat fee per event or a show and seperate win fee, while there is also a cut of the UFC’s sponsorship deal with their clothing partner Venum.

UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall said on the Ariel Helwani Show he was not sure how the new model would affect fighters.

Manchester fighter Aspinall will headline a PPV event, UFC 321, in October.

The new broadcast deal will kick in at the start of 2026 and after initial reports stated the PPV model would end completely, White said there was still the possibility of a few standalone PPV events each year.

This deal only applies to the US, with TNT Sports the UFC’s broadcast partner in the UK.

The UFC has used PPVs as a revenue generator since its first event in 1993.

But reports indicated PPV sales have been decreasing in recent years. The UFC staged 14 PPV events in 2024 in the US that were about £60 each.

Fact-checking Trump’s claim that crime in Washington is out of control

US President Donald Trump said he is deploying 800 National Guard soldiers to Washington, DC, and taking control of its police department after claiming that crime was “out of control” in the capital city.

The nation’s capital is “becoming a situation of complete and total lawlessness,” Trump said at an August 11 news conference as he invoked the Home Rule Act to take federal control of the city.

“Washington, DC, should be one of the safest, cleanest and most beautiful cities anywhere in the world, and we’re going to make it that.”

But many of the details Trump cited do not stand up to scrutiny.

Trump’s actions are a step towards making good on his threat of a federal takeover of the district after carjackers severely beat a former Department of Government Efficiency employee.

In a news briefing after Trump’s announcement, Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser said the district would cooperate with the federal government and added that she speaks with Trump often about the city’s progress on crime.

“In fact, my first meeting with him after he was elected the second time, we went over the crime trends; we went over how we are seeing decreases, so the president is read in on our efforts,” she said.

So why did Trump decide to take DC under federal control, and did he falsely claim that the crime rate had spiked in the capital city?

Can Trump invoke a federal takeover of Washington, DC, under Section 740 of DC Home Rule Act?

Trump cannot take over the city without congressional approval. He is using an emergency provision to temporarily oversee the district’s police force.

The US Constitution created the District of Columbia as a seat of the federal government. In 1973, President Richard Nixon signed the Home Rule Act, enabling district residents to elect a mayor and city council. The law gives the district autonomy for local governance, but the city still answers to Congress on matters including budgetary oversight and the ability to overturn local legislation.

Section 740 of the Home Rule Act allows the president to temporarily take control of the city’s police department during an emergency.

In an August 11 executive order, Trump invoked Section 740, citing crime in the district as an emergency. The executive order says federal use of the district’s Metropolitan Police Department is needed to maintain law and order; protect federal buildings and monuments; and ensure “conditions necessary for the orderly functioning of the Federal Government.”

Trump delegated operational control of the department to US Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The emergency powers cannot extend past 48 hours, the law says, unless the president notifies Congress in writing about the reason and the time period needed. If he notifies Congress, Trump can extend the emergency for up to 30 days.

Did Washington, DC, homicides reach the highest rate ever in 2023?

Trump said, “Murders in 2023 reached the highest rate, probably ever. They say 25 years, but they don’t know what that means, because it just goes back 25 years. Can’t be worse.”

The city’s Metropolitan Police Department data showed 274 homicides in 2023, the highest number over the past 20 years. Trump omitted that the department’s preliminary crime data shows homicides have declined 32 percent since 2023, to 187 in 2024.

The homicide rate continues to decline. This year, through August 11, homicides decreased by 12 percent compared with the same time period in 2024.

Jeff Asher, an analyst for AH Datalytics, told PolitiFact that the homicide rate increased substantially after 2020, peaking in 2023 at 39 per 100,000 people.

That was the highest rate since 2003, but far below the 1991 peak of 81 per 100,000 people. The falling rate matches national trends, Asher said.

White House spokesperson Steven Cheung said on X that the city police statistics are not as they seem. Cheung attached a July WRC-TV story about a district police commander’s May suspension after he was accused of altering crime statistics.

Fraternal Order of Police Chairman Gregg Pemberton told the TV station that union members and management said the command staff want to “make sure that these classifications of these reports are adjusted over time to make sure that the overall crime stats stay down.”

A police spokesperson told PolitiFact that Commander Michael Pulliam is on administrative leave and the department can’t comment on active internal investigations. The union did not respond to our request for comment.

Have violent crimes such as carjacking increased in Washington, DC?

Trump said, “The number of car thefts has doubled over the past five years, and the number of carjackings has more than tripled.”

Trump is correct that the number of these crimes increased, but he did not mention a recent decline in carjackings.

The city’s dashboard shows carjackings rose from 2020 through 2023 before declining in 2024. This year, through August 9, there have been 188 carjackings compared with 299 during the same time period in 2024, and compared with 607 in 2023, a police spokesperson told PolitiFact.

The city’s preliminary car theft data shows a 25 percent drop from 2023 to 2024, and car thefts are essentially flat year to date in 2025 compared with the same period last year.

“Auto theft increased a huge amount in DC after 2020 before surging again in 2023 following the video being posted showing how to steal certain models of Kia and Hyundai cars,” Asher said. The “Kia Boyz” phenomenon happened nationwide.

Overall, the city’s data shows that, through August 11 this year, compared with 2024, violent crime in the district declined by 26 percent. Washington, DC’s violent crime decrease is part of a nationwide trend in major cities.

Does implementing cashless bail affect crime rates?

Trump said, “The radical left City Council adopted no cash bail. By the way, every place in the country where you have no cash bail is a disaster … Somebody murders somebody, and they’re out on no cash bail before the day is out.”

“No cash bail” or “cashless bail” allows certain defendants awaiting trial to be released from custody without paying bail. Even with cashless bail laws in place, defendants accused of violent crimes, such as murder, can still be detained if judges determine they are a public safety threat or flight risk.

Misdemeanour charges typically result in higher rates of release, according to the district’s Pretrial Services Agency.

In 2024, 89 percent of defendants were not rearrested during the pre-trial period, the agency said.

Proponents of eliminating cash bail say a cash requirement harms low-income people. Those who support cash bail say it ensures defendants appear in court, and removing it threatens public safety. Washington, DC, was a pioneer in pretrial reform, largely eliminating cash bail in the 1990s.

There’s a lack of expert consensus on the impact of cashless bail on crime rates.

A 2024 report by the left-leaning Brennan Centre for Justice at NYU Law said researchers found “no statistically significant relationship” between bail reform and crime rates. The study looked at crime rate data from 2015 through 2021 for 33 cities across the US, 22 of which had implemented some type of bail reform.

The Prison Policy Initiative, a nonprofit that supports reducing the prison population, measured public safety before and after pretrial reforms in four states and nine cities and counties, including Washington, DC. In general, researchers found that releasing people pre-trial did not put communities at risk for more crime.

The Trump administration has cited a 2022 report from the Yolo County, California, district attorney’s office as evidence that cashless bails cause increased crime. The report explored the effects of California’s temporary bail suspension during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding that 420 out of 595 people — 70.6 percent — were rearrested after being released from jail under this system.
