Rodgers v Desmond: Analysing the Celtic fallout

SNS

The farewell and then the filleting are first.

Monday night brought two statements from Celtic Park, one from the club announcing that Brendan Rodgers had resigned, the other from major shareholder Dermot Desmond excoriating the now ex-manager in the most incendiary fashion.

Every story has two sides, and we are eagerly anticipating Rodgers’ interpretation.

“Celtic Football Club can confirm that football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation”.

No one had any idea that Brendan Rodgers would join Celtic next season, but neither did anyone else. He claimed during the week that he “was never more inspired during my time at Celtic.”

In the wake of the 3-1 loss to Hearts on Sunday he said: “I’ve never worked harder in all my time here. Therefore, we have the drive to try to reverse the current levels. It’s still very early, so that’s fine. I think that’s the key point in it all. We just need to concentrate on these performances, the outcomes, and hopefully our standards will continue to rise as the season progresses.

He left just over 24 hours later. It begs the question – the first of many – what changed? Desmond’s own statement is the source of the rest of these quotations.

“Both Michael Nicholson and Eddie Desmond both expressed to Brendan in June that they wanted to extend their terms of service by offering him a contract. He said he would need to think about it and revert. Brendan continued to make the same pitch in subsequent press conferences as evidence that the club had not made a commitment to offer him a contract. That was completely false.

All of this is open to interpretation. Only those present in the room are aware of what was said, but Rodgers’ version can be analyzed more fully. He claimed in August that he and the other three parties had a conversation about where we were and where it sits, and that I am very happy there.

Rodgers pointed out to the media that “when the club feels there’s that time to make an offer then they will do”. Rodgers stated in September that he hadn’t yet received an offer, and that he wouldn’t be so haughty to declare that he wanted to stay here for another three years. I might not want to join the club. I have to respect that. I carry on doing my job until there is something serious on the paper.

“Every player signed and every player sold during his tenure was done so with Brendan’s full knowledge, approval, and endorsement. Any other inference is completely false.

When two players, the striker Shin Yamada and the defender Hayato Inamura, were brought in during the summer, the “insinuation” occurred. Rodgers referred to them as “club signings”.

Rodgers did not say this outwardly, but people insisted that he had not been responsible for those arrivals after his remarks. Of course, the former manager might disagree with the interpretation, but Desmond certainly did so in this context.

The inference that players were being signed without his support caused disquiet behind the scenes and suspicion and rancour among the fans. The board and Rodgers’ distrust was at its breaking point, or it was the continuation of it.

A group of Celtic fans’ organizations called the Celtic Fan Collective met with some important club members last month to discuss whether Rodgers had the final say over all players. Chief executive Michael Nicholson said he had.

Nicholson was asked why Rodgers made reference to “club signings” then. Nicholson shook his shoulders in response. No words, but a further indication that all was far from well.

Later, a statement emerged from Celtic, and after reading it, the color is changed. The article stated that “a lot of what is reported in the media or online about our transfer dealings is inaccurate.”

It went on: “We also understand that this leads to frustration among supporters. In order to improve the clarity for our supporters, we are looking into ways to close the gap between speculation and reality while we are still in the ongoing negotiations.

“His (Rodgers’) later public statements about club operations and transfers completely out of the blue.”

Regrettably, his words and deeds have been conflicting, deceptive, and self-serving since then. They have contributed to a toxic atmosphere around the club and fuelled hostility towards members of the executive team and the Board. Some of the abuse directed at them and their families was completely unjustifiable and unacceptable.

A very serious charge. There’s no doubt that a toxic atmosphere has set in at Celtic but for Desmond not to accept the board’s own role in that is quite something.

Rodgers believes that if he had a role, Rodgers did as well because the club’s poor recruitment and inability to find new stars to replace them.

“One person’s desire for self-preservation at the expense of others is what has recently failed,” according to one person. Not our structure or model.

Desmond claims that there is no acceptance of responsibility for the club’s recent problems.

Celtic’s model has served them extremely well over the years, but most recently it’s faltered badly. At Celtic Park today, there are no mapped out players who perform below the standards. There is a lot of responsibility to bear on that front.

Kyogo Furuhashi, Matt O’Riley, Liel Abada and Nicolas Kuhn were X-factor operators for the club, but they don’t have that kind of quality anymore.

They’ve spent a lot of money, but have they done so wisely? If not, isn’t that an indictment of the Celtic process and execution?

“We all have the same goal: to ensure Celtic’s continued domestic success and European success.”

There’s no doubt that Celtic is full of people who want the best for the club, but Desmond’s line about “further progress in Europe” is highly debatable.

They recently suffered a Champions League exit from Kairat Almaty, and they have repeatedly failed to reach the old group stages, falling to teams with smaller budgets under the leadership of several different managers.

They have won 41% of all European games in the last ten years, while losing 45%.

Celtic is “more powerful than any single person.”

When Rodgers replies it will be interesting to see if he makes anything of this.

Celtic fans will be able to vouch for Desmond’s excessive influence over the club’s management and leadership.

Perhaps the fact that the club is not more important than any one person is indicative of the fact that it wasn’t the club’s chairman, chief executive, or the board as a whole that delivered that thunderclap to Rogers on Monday night. Desmond, the largest shareholder but a non-executive at Celtic, is.

Lead Counsel, Wahab Shittu, Withdraws From Mohbad’s DNA Case

Wahab Shittu, the attorney for Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has withdrawn from the investigation into the late singer’s DNA test, Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad.

According to Shittu, the firm’s founding leader, Shittu, the decision was made in a press release that was made available to the media and signed by him. This was in response to the “sustained falsehood being orchestrated on social media about alleged attempts to compromise the outcome of the DNA process.”

In recent days, this campaign of calumny has become extremely persistent without any support. Removing further involvement and providing legal advice to Mohbad’s family in relation to the alleged DNA proceedings is the path of honor, integrity, and professionalism, the statement read.

Further, the company added that, “We clarify that our firm has no personal interest in the outcome of the DNA process other than the desire for justice to solve the truth,” “For the avoidance of doubt, we state.”

Read more about Mohbad’s father’s request for prosecution of his daughter-in-law and other people indicted in the coroner’s verdict.

Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, more commonly known as Mohbad, is shown in a file photo.

The family of Mohbad has already been informed of the decision, according to the law firm.

The family was also informed in the decision that the DNA process must be conducted transparently, using renowned DNA laboratories both domestically and abroad, to prevent the process from being compromised, according to the statement.

The statement stated that “this withdrawal relates only to the DNA proceedings and does not affect our involvement in or our handling of other family matters.”

Following Noel Hunt’s departure over the weekend, Reading appointed Leam Richardson as their new manager.

The 45-year-old has a one-year, half-year contract with Select Car Leasing Stadium through 2027.

Richardson previously led Wigan Athletic between 2020 and 2022, when they won the League One title. Prior to that, Richardson most recently served Rotherham United.

Reading terminated Hunt’s contract on Sunday following a subpar season that had put the Royals 19th in the League One standings.

Owner of the Royals, Rob Couhig, stated, “I have admired Leam for a while.”

He is a coach and leader who embodies the qualities we seek in Reading: “he is a leader who has a relentless focus on improving players.”

He was humble, determined, and he built strong, honest cultures, which I know the Royals’ fans value and respect. He was promoted from League One in extremely difficult circumstances.

“Leam is familiar with this division, he is aware of how to create a winning dressing room, and he is aware of the requirements there.” He is determined to advance this football team with his energy, ambition, and determination. He will be greatly welcomed to Reading, in our hearts.

Danny Schofield and James Beattie, both of whom played for Southampton, will also be joining Richardson.

Following a subpar start to the Championship season, Richardson was fired from Wigan in 2022. The Millers did the same after their promotion to the Championship in April 2024.

Prior to joining the two clubs, the former defender transitioned from a player to a coach at Portsmouth, Chesterfield, and Accrington Stanley as assistant manager of Paul Cook.

Expectations should be modest, according to analysis.

Tim Dellor, a reading commentator for BBC Radio Berkshire,

The best thing Richardson did was extinguish Wigan from League One and return to the Championship in 2022.

Reading fans hope he can emulate Noel Hunt’s success in the next 18 months, but he will need a little more luck and time to do it.

His first game in charge will be against Carlisle on Saturday in the FA Cup first round, followed by Wigan and Rotherham, both of his former clubs, in Stevenage.

Prior to this, Reading chose the Spaniard, Serbian, and Portuguese smooth-talking, culturally adept options, an ex-international superstar player, a legendary Reading player, and the club’s director of football.

Richardson is not one of the things above, which would be a good place to start. Over the past few years, they have tried all kinds of managers.

To bring the current squad to the championship this year, he will need to work miracles.

Governor Otu Presents ₦780.6bn “Budget Of Inclusive Growth” For 2026

Bassey Otu, the governor of Cross River State, described the state’s budget as a “Budget of Inclusive Growth,” referring to it as the “Budget of Inclusive Growth” that the state legislature will be hearing from the state legislature in 2026.

Governor Otu cited the proposal as a “sacred social contract between government and the governed” as it aims to consolidate the gains of his administration’s People First agenda.

He claims that extensive consultations with citizens, civil society organizations, private sector stakeholders, NGOs, and citizens led to the creation of the 2026 budget.

He made a policy switch, moving from Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the Human Development Index (HDI), promising to concentrate on improving rural communities’ access to electricity, healthcare, and education.

The governor made it known that the Cross River Social Investment Programme (CRSIP) would be run in a non-political, multi-sectoral manner to empower the elderly, women, youth, and other vulnerable groups.

A 17 percent increase over the proposed budget of 2025 results in a 519.6 billion (67%) allocation to capital expenditure, while a 260.96 billion (33%) is designated for recurrent spending. The economic sector receives 421 billion dollars, 163 billion for social services, 164 billion for general administration, 28 billion for law and justice, and 33.6 billion for regional development.

Following improved revenue inflows and prudent resource management, Governor Otu noted that the “Budget of Sustainable Growth” for 2025 was revised from 538 billion to 642 billion. He claimed that the adjustment provided funding for crucial initiatives like maternal and child health initiatives like road repairs and rural electrification.

The governor cited the success of the People First policy, which helped Cross River rank first nationwide in routine immunization coverage at 95%, underlining the year’s performance. He cited completed and ongoing projects, including the Yahe–Ebo–Wanakom–Wanikade Road and the Esuk Utan–Depot dual carriageway.

Otu also mentioned improvements to healthcare and power, including the completion of the Ikom General Hospital and the installation of solar streetlights in rural areas. He added that the state’s nursing schools are now fully accredited.

The governor disclosed that negotiations are raging for the Bakassi Deep Seaport while the governor provided updates on the infrastructure.

In terms of governance, Otu announced the full implementation of the national minimum wage, the expansion of fiber optic connectivity across MDAs, and the partial approval of retirees’ gratuities. He also confirmed that Certificates of Occupancy have been issued again, and that the state’s land administration system has been reworked.

Lebanon’s Aoun calls for end to Israeli attacks in meeting with US envoy

Israel’s nearly daily-lethal strikes on Lebanon have been called into question by President Joseph Aoun and American envoy Morgan Ortagus at a meeting in Beirut.

Israel has repeatedly bombarded Lebanon in a flagrant violation of the November 2024 ceasefire, which aimed to end the country’s a year of hostilities that turned into months of full-fledged war with Hezbollah, with impunity. More than 20 people have been killed in Lebanon as a result of Israeli strikes alone in October, according to the country’s Ministry of Public Health.

Aoun had insisted to Ortagus on the necessity of “activating the work of the Cessation of Hostilities Monitoring Committee,” especially with regard to halting the ongoing Israeli violations, in a statement released by the presidency on Tuesday.

The implementation of the truce is supervised by a five-member committee made up of France and the United States. Ortagus is scheduled to attend this week’s committee meeting.

Aoun added that “the need exists to allow southerners to return to their homes and repair damaged ones, especially as winter approaches.”

Excavators and bulldozers have been targeted by Israeli strikes in recent weeks. According to Lebanoni officials, these strikes are intended to stop any reconstruction efforts in the south of the conflict. Without providing any proof, Israel claims to be attacking Hezbollah.

The UN human rights office announced on Tuesday that it had verified the Israeli forces’ killing of 111 civilians since the Lebanon ceasefire.

Israeli troops were ordered to leave southern Lebanon in accordance with the ceasefire agreement last year, and Hezbollah was ordered to retreat north of the Litani River and destroy any military installations there.

Only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers are authorized to station in the south of the nation, according to the agreement.

An Israeli attack that hit UN peacekeeping personnel in southern Lebanon on Sunday was condemned by France and the UN.

According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the attack on UNIFIL troops, which included an Israeli drone dropping a grenade in the vicinity of a patrol and a tank opening fire on peacekeepers close to the border town of Kfar Kila, was “very, very dangerous.”

In contrast to the ceasefire, Israel has been launching nearly daily attacks in southern Lebanon, occupying five positions, and still holding onto the position five times.

The Lebanese government has begun disarming Hezbollah, who have declared they will not lay down arms as the country’s main resistance to Israeli attacks and occupation in the south, under the pressure of the US.

Israel has maintained troops in five strategic border locations despite the truce’s terms.

With the most recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Israel’s attacks in the Middle East haven’t stopped.
