British Grand Prix

Venue: Silverstone Dates: 4-6 July Race start: 15:00 BST on Sunday

Lewis Hamilton said he and Ferrari could “dream of a strong weekend” at the British Grand Prix after challenging McLaren in Friday practice.

McLaren’s Lando Norris set the pace at Silverstone, 0. 22 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, with Hamilton just 0. 079secs further adrift.

Championship leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren was fourth, 0. 470secs off the pace.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, complaining over the radio of a lack of front grip through Silverstone’s high-speed corners, was fifth fastest.

Hamilton said: “It was a really good day. Great to see the crowd, amazing to be out on track in a Ferrari here at Silverstone.

“And also the Red Bull and McLaren have an upgrade, so for us to be in the mix still given they have had a step today is really positive.

“Definitely feel we can dream of having a strong weekend but putting it all together and extracting it is another thing.

We have a bit of work to do – Norris

Hamilton was fastest in the first session on a day when Ferrari’s pace caught the eye of championship leaders McLaren.

McLaren and Red Bull are two of a number of teams who have a new floor for Silverstone, while Ferrari are continuing with the new design they debuted in Austria last weekend.

Hamilton – who has had a difficult start to his first year at Ferrari but has won more times at Silverstone than anyone else, with a record nine victories – said he was finally becoming more at home in the car.

“I’m progressing a lot with the car and much more comfortable on knowing where it needs to be. By P2 we still weren’t where we needed to be so struggled a little bit more but definitely know the changes we need to make to the car. “

Leclerc, who was the fastest driver on the race-simulation runs at the end of the second session, said: “The day was good. We’ve been pretty strong so far. It’s positive.

“We still need to find some pace in qualifying. McLaren is once again probably the car to beat but in race pace I was happy, I am finding my way.

“I am changing quite a lot the car in weekends recently to try to find some pace in qualifying. For now I don’t seem to find the way for that but in the race I am very happy with where we are.

“We are very strong in the race but we have to do a step forward in qualifying. “

Norris, 15 points behind Piastri in the championship after his win in Austria on Sunday, said: “The Ferraris have been very, very quick today and they shall be tomorrow.

“We have a bit of work to do. It looked maybe a bit too good today. The Ferraris always catch up into P3 like they did last weekend, so pleased with today but nothing to be too proud about just yet. “

Idea of Verstappen in a Mercedes ‘nerve-wracking’

Off track, chatter in the paddock continues to centre around the possibility of Verstappen leaving Red Bull for Mercedes after this season.

McLaren Racing chief executive officer Zak Brown said: “Max in Mercedes definitely is nerve-wracking (as an idea) because they’re a team on the rise.

“Max Verstappen in a Mercedes, that’s a nail-biter. I think it would be a disaster for Red Bull if he were to leave there, because he’s clearly carrying the team. “

‘I’ve never heard that’: Trump denies knowingly using anti-Semitic term

United States President Donald Trump has professed ignorance about a term he used that is widely considered anti-Semitic, explaining that he did not know it had that meaning.

In the early morning hours of Friday, the Republican leader addressed the controversy around the term “Shylock”, which he used to describe unscrupulous bankers hours earlier.

The term, however, originates from the 16th-century play The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, which includes a depiction of a Jewish moneylender that some consider to be deeply anti-Semitic. The character’s name, Shylock, has been adopted as a pejorative for loan sharks, particularly those of Jewish faith.

“No, I’ve never heard it that way. To be Shylock is somebody that, say, a money lender at high rates,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One, the presidential plane. “I’ve never heard it that way. You view it differently than me. I’ve never heard that. ”

Trump used the term while visiting Iowa on Thursday for the kickoff of his “America250” celebration series, a string of events that will culminate in the 250th anniversary of the US in 2026.

While addressing a crowd at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, Trump played up his success earlier in the day with the passage of his signature budget mega-bill, which he refers to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill”.

The House of Representatives had passed a revised version of the bill in a final, party-line vote of 218 to 214, over objections that it would raise the national deficit and slash social safety-net programmes like Medicaid.

Trump, however, had played up the fact that the mega-bill would allow his 2017 tax cuts to continue, while also raising exemptions under the estate tax — the tax on property transferred upon the death of a loved one.

“Think of that: no death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker and, in some cases, Shylocks and bad people,” Trump told the Iowa crowd.

The Anti-Defamation League, a group established to fight anti-Semitism, denounced Trump’s use of the term on Friday, pointing to its long history as a slur.

“The term ‘Shylock’ evokes a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous. President Trump’s use of the term is very troubling and irresponsible,” the group wrote in a statement.

“It underscores how lies and conspiracies about Jews remain deeply entrenched in our country. Words from our leaders matter and we expect more from the President of the United States. ”

Thursday’s speech was not the first time Trump and his associates have faced accusations of anti-Semitism.

On the first day of Trump’s second term as president, then-ally Elon Musk gave a speech at a rally at the Capital One Arena that culminated with him slapping his chest and then extending his arm outwards with a flattened palm — a gesture that many people interpreted as a Nazi-style salute.

Trump himself has faced scrutiny for hosting a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago estate with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, both of whom have been accused of spreading anti-Semitism.

The president was also criticised for downplaying the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacist participants chanted, “Jews will not replace us. ” Trump described the rally and its counterprotest by saying there were “very fine people on both sides”.

Trump, however, has made combatting anti-Semitism a central theme in his campaigns against Harvard University and other academic institutions where pro-Palestinian protests unfolded. Critics have described Trump’s attacks as efforts to dampen free speech and academic freedom.

The Republican leader, however, is not the first president in recent years to use the word “Shylock” — and face a backlash.

His Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, who served from 2021 to early 2025, once used the term to describe bankers pursuing foreclosures against military members deployed overseas.

“People would come to him and talk about what was happening at home, in terms of foreclosures, in terms of bad loans that were being — these Shylocks that took advantage of these women and men while overseas,” Biden said in 2022.

Noel Gallagher’s ex-wife Meg Mathews makes Oasis Principality Stadium appearance

Meg Mathews is on hand to support her ex-husband, Noel Gallagher, on the first night of Oasis’ legendary tour. A source told the Mirror: “After posting about her ex-husband for weeks, Meg Mathews had a prime seat for watching the band. She was in great spirits before the set, watching Richard Ashcroft with pals. ” It comes just days after Meg was forced to deny that she and Noel had decided to give their relationship another go.

The 59-year-old has been sharing throwback snaps on social media, prompting fans to believe that they were back together following the breakdown of Noel’s second marriage. Meg denied the speculation but insisted that she would be attending the upcoming Oasis concert in London.

But despite engaging with fans about the huge reunion, Meg decided to throw a spanner in the works earlier today, revealing that she was in Cornwall, where she was meditating. But that didn’t stop her from getting involved in the Oasis hype.

Taking to Instagram today, sharing a slew of old snaps of her and Noel larking about in a club, she wrote: “TODAY IS THE DAY 4th July 2025 Finally here …. OASIS REUNION TOUR, Britpop was a British music and cultural movement that peaked in the mid-1990s, characterized by a revival of British guitar pop from the 1960s and 1970s, in contrast to American grunge.

“It was not just a genre, but a reactionary and patriotic cultural response, celebrating British identity, working-class roots, and everyday life. To everyone who’s there when they walk on the stage at 8. 15pm will be a piece of history. “

Referencing the photo, she added: “That night was a lot of fun can’t remember what after party gig it was . . back then there was always one which I was in charge of organising through @creationrecords money and fun had no limit back then. “

Throughout the week, Meg has been reflecting on her former marriage to Noel in the lead-up to tonight’s mammoth concert. Just yesterday, she marked the countdown with an adorable snap of herself and the rocker.

Alongside the pics, fans have been desperate to see them reunite. One wrote in the comments: “Please tell us you are back together again,” whilst another added: “So nice to see you still love and support your ex. So healthy to have that bond. Especially when you have a beautiful daughter together. “

A third shared: “Meg these pics are the best! ! You’ll always have a bond, you share an amazing child who is a credit to you both,” with a fourth writing: “The best era, and the best couple, wish you two got back together. ” But Meg said it was a firm “no” when asked if she and Noel were an item again.

The former couple tied the knot in Las Vegas back in June 1997, before they welcomed their daughter Anaïs, who is also in attendance. But they were married for just four years before they decided to split and go their separate ways.

Noel went on to marry Sara MacDonald, whom he split from in 2023 and has subsequently divorced.

The Lilacs star reveals cancer news and ‘takes step back’ for chemotherapy

An Indie music star has shared a devastating health update as he revealed he will be stepping back from his band duties. Sam Birchall of The Lilacs took to the band’s X, formerly known as Twitter, account to share the heartbreaking news after initially thinking he had received the all clear.

The guitarist shared a statement with his fans as he revealed he will be taking a step back from his role to focus on his health. It read: “Lilacs Fans, Friends, Family x.

“After recently hearing the news that my scans were looking clear from cancer, it is with utter disappointment to tell you that after just my first couple of check ups back, the cancer is infact showing again and remains present. “

He went on: “Perhaps a real reflection of what cancer is, it picks you up and drops you, plays with your mind and just when you think you’ve got it on the ropes it throws another swing.

“With this in mind I must again put my health first and will therefore be stepping back from the band for the coming summer months to complete chemotherapy and get this thing beat once and for all. This is certainly not a long term thing and I will be aiming to be back just in time for Manchester Academy in November and better than ever! “

He explained how recent gigs had been some of the best in the band’s last five years. Sets included an impressive Isle of Wight offering and supporting Sting at Cardiff Castle.

Sam went on to say that while cancer might think it is powerful, nothing is more powerful than music and its community.

Fans were quick to send messages in the comments section. One user wrote: “Hope it goes well, keep fighting & can’t wait to see u on stage at Manchester Academy. ” Another added: “You’ve got this, Sam. Thinking of you, mate, and wishing the fastest of recoveries. “

Olympic track athlete Mageean diagnosed with cancer

Inpho

European champion and two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean has been diagnosed with cancer.

The middle-distance runner, from Portaferry in Northern Ireland, said the diagnosis has “been a lot to take in”, but added she is “ready to face this with the same fight I’ve always brought to the track”.

Posting on Instagram, 33-year-old Mageean said: “To everyone who’s been part of my journey so far, I have some difficult news to share: I’ve been diagnosed with cancer.

“It’s been a lot to take in, but I’ve already started treatment and I’m incredibly grateful to be surrounded by the love and support of my family and close friends.

“Right now, my focus is on healing and taking things one day at a time. I kindly ask that you respect my privacy and that of my loved ones as we move through this together.

Mageean has won gold, silver and bronze medals at the European Championships.

After recovering from a serious ankle injury, she came third in 2016 and was a runner-up in 2022 before topping the podium in Rome for Ireland last year.

Mageean made her Olympic debut in Rio in 2016 and competed at the delayed 2021 Games in Tokyo, where her preparations were hampered by a calf issue.

She was set to race at the Paris Olympics last year as a reigning European champion but an Achilles injury ruled her out on the eve of her 1500m heat.

Mageean’s stellar career has also included a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, fourth place at the World Championships in 2023, and Irish records in the 800m, 1,000m, 1500m and mile.

She was named the 2023 BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year after an impressive year, in which she broke national records and was fourth in a competitive World Championships final.

European Athletics posted on X: “We’re all behind you, Ciara.

“Everyone at European Athletics sends their best wishes to Ciara Mageean following her recent cancer diagnosis. “

Portaferry GAA, who Mageean used to represent in camogie, said she is “truly an inspiration to so many people”.

“We are all behind you in this fight,” the club said.

“You and your family as always have our full support every step of the way.
