Israel’s turn to ‘comply’: US envoy after Lebanon moves to disarm Hezbollah

After Beirut approved a plan to disarm the Hezbollah organization by the end of the year, US special envoy Tom Barrack demanded that Israel halt its involvement in Lebanon’s military exercises.

“The Lebanese government has done their part,” he said. “There is always a step-by-step approach. The first step was made by them. After meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Barrack said to reporters in Beirut, Lebanon, that what we need now is that equal handshake.

As Israel’s military halts ground, air, and sea operations and withdraws its troops from Lebanon’s south, according to the US-backed plan, which provides a four-phase roadmap for the Hezbollah organization.

Despite Hezbollah’s outright refusal to disarm, the Lebanon’s cabinet approved the plan on August 7 despite the country’s cabinet’s approval of it. This raises the possibility that Israel might launch more attacks on Lebanon even as it violates the November truce it signed with Hezbollah to end its conflict.

Israel has continued to attack Lebanon in the weeks that have passed the cabinet’s plan.

Barrack said the US was “in the process of discussing their position with Israel” and that the cabinet’s decision was a “Lebanese decision that necessitated Israel’s cooperation,” but he gave no further details.

The US envoy responded to a question from reporters about whether he anticipated Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanese territory, saying “that’s exactly the next step.”

“Every side cooperates,” he says. Nobody should be intimidated by us. He added that Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Israel will all benefit from the positive outcomes.

Following a meeting with the president of Lebanon at the Presidential Palace in Baabda on August 18, 2025, US Special Envoy Tom Barrack holds a joint press conference.

An economic proposal

After months of diplomatic tussle between the US and Lebanon, the US envoy added that Washington would request an economic proposal for post-war reconstruction in the nation.

Following the meeting on Monday, Barrack expressed optimism and said that a “return to prosperity and peace is possible.” In the upcoming weeks, I believe there will be improvement in a number of areas.

According to Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem, who is based in Beirut, “the American envoy is making his first trip to Lebanon since the Lebanese cabinet mandated the Lebanese army to examine how to disarm Hezbollah.”

Given that Hezbollah refused, there are still many questions about how this process will proceed.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem warned of “no life” in Lebanon if the state attempted to confront or overthrow the group on Friday, citing the threat of civil war.

Aoun said “other parties” now needed to commit to the roadmap’s contents in a written statement following his meeting with Barrack.

Additionally, Barrack will meet with Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who frequently negotiate with Washington on behalf of Hezbollah.

A “return to peace and prosperity”?

The Lebanese government will announce a decision in phase one of the US-backed plan that will require Israel to stop conducting military operations in Lebanese territory and commits to Hezbollah’s full disarmament by the end of the year, which it currently has.

Within 60 days, Lebanon would begin implementing the disarmament plan, and the government would approve troop deployments in the south. Then, Israel would begin removing Lebanese prisoners and resuming its military presence there.

In phase three, which should occur within 90 days, Israel will leave the final two border positions and funding would be secured for reconstruction in Lebanon.

Lebanon’s allies will hold a conference to support the country’s economic recovery in phase four, during which Hezbollah’s last heavy weapons will be destroyed.

Hassan Nasrallah, a long-time leader, was killed in a massive Israeli attack on Beirut last year, which severely weakened Hezbollah following its 14-month conflict with Israel. Hezbollah was regarded as having better weapons than the Lebanese army prior to the war.

The organization has long argued that its weapons must be kept in order to protect Lebanon from attacks, but critics have accused it of using them as political leverage.

Hezbollah has stated that it won’t discuss its arsenal until southern Lebanon is overrun by Israel’s attacks. Both Aoun and Salam want to end Hezbollah, and they’ve also demanded that Israel stop its attacks and resign.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, drones could be overheard in the towns of Wadi Zefta, al-Numairiyeh, and Wadi Kafra as a result of Israeli attacks that just happened on Monday, including one that involved a house bombing in Meiss el-Jabal and a sound bombing in Dahra border town.

Prince Philip ‘whispered four brutal words’ to Queen at Harry and Meghan’s wedding

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wed more than seven years ago, but a new book claims that the senior royal made an x-rated comment as the ceremony ended.

Prince Philip didn’t hold back his true feelings after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, according to a new book.

The Sussexes married in a grand ceremony at Windsor Castle back in May 2018 in front of the whole Royal Family, including the late Queen and her husband.

The ceremony at St George’s Chapel had all of the hallmarks of a royal wedding, as well as the addition of a performance of Stand By Me by a gospel choir as well as a 14-minute sermon by Bishop Michael Curry. Once the service concluded, the newlyweds went on a carriage ride around Windsor and the rest of the royals filed out of the chapel to head to the castle for a formal reception.

And as Harry’s grandfather Philip turned to the Queen and said, “Thank f*** that’s over,” said former royal butler Grant Harrold, as they left the church.

His claim comes in his new book, out later this month. Harrold worked for King Charles at his Highgrove estate for seven years between 2004 and 2011.

Before he and his partner Jack Stooks were invited to watch the royal party leave the chapel and welcomed the royal staffer as his guest, Harrold had been providing punditry for a broadcaster the day of the wedding.

According to The Telegraph, in his upcoming book, called The Royal Butler: My remarkable life of Royal Service, he writes: “Once all the formalities were over, we watched as the happy couple, and then the other members of the Royal family, filed out of the chapel.

“When Prince Philip came out, he turned to the Queen and said, ‘Thank f*** that’s over.'”

The former Duke of Edinburgh had hip replacement surgery prior to Harry and Meghan’s engagement. According to the time, he claimed to have set himself the goal of arriving on time and walking by that day.

Meanwhile, during his time at Highgrove, Harrold got to know both Princes William and Harry, who were in their late teens and early 20s.

In a new interview, the former butler also reveals that he first met Harry as a 19-year-old, with their first encounter coming when Harry hit him with a water balloon during a playfight. He says the pair even shared a takeaway in the time before the Duke of Sussex went off to Sandhurst Military Academy.

Harrold’s Highgrove days also coincided with Charles and Camilla’s engagement announcement and marriage.

Harry and his now-divorced brother William begged their father not to marry their then-wife in his bombshell memoir Spare. We support you, he told, “We said it.” We said we support Camilla. Just a reminder, don’t marry her. Pa, just be together. He didn’t respond. But she responded. Right away .

And he claims that Harry’s memoir, which he saw, was a far cry from what he saw. He stated to The Telegraph, “The four of them, I promise you, got along so well. And that’s why I really don’t understand what Harry has said.

“because I saw them,” I said. I witnessed them having dinners together, drinking drinks together, and attending parties with others.

He also recalls that neither the royal family and the King used to act as a puppet for William and Harry, laughing and giggled.

Trump-Zelensky meeting: What’s the schedule, what’s at stake?

On Monday, high-stakes peace talks will take place at the White House between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Trump of the United States.

Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday and discussed a possible peace deal before it could be reached on Sunday if Zelenskyy cedes eastern Ukraine’s Donbass region to Russia. Despite high hopes leading up to the summit, there was no peace agreement at the conclusion.

Numerous European leaders will be present in Washington, DC, to back Ukraine’s position and demand that any peace deal be supported by US security guarantees.

When will the meeting take place then? Who will be present? What will be said, then? All you need to know is this:

What time and place will the meetings take place?

The White House in the capital of the United States will host the meetings.

Around noon will be brought in for delegations, and meetings will last for a while. The schedule is as follows:

  • At Noon (16:00 GMT), European leaders arrive at the White House.
  • Zelenskyy arrives at the White House at 1 p.m. (17:00 GMT).
  • Meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in the Oval Office at 1:15 p.m. (17:15 GMT).
  • Trump greets the leaders of Europe in the State Dining Room at 2:15 p.m. (18:15 GMT).
  • 2: 30pm (18: 30 GMT): A “family photo” taken in Cross Hall.
  • A multilateral meeting took place in the East Room at 3 PM (GMT).

Who will be present?

Trump and other confirmed participants at Monday’s meeting are:

  • Alexander Stubb, the president of Finland,
  • Emmanuel Macron, the president of France,
  • Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor,
  • Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy,
  • Keir Starmer, the prime minister of the United Kingdom,
  • Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission
  • Mark Rutte, the head of NATO, is the secretary-general.

What will they discuss?

Putin’s demands for a territorial partnership in Ukraine will be one of the most significant topics on the agenda. Zelenskyy has to date refrained from taking into account the possibility of granting Ukrainian territory in order to bring about peace.

However, if US guarantees of Ukraine’s future security were included, accepting Russia’s de facto control of Ukrainian territory, particularly Donbass, would be easier to swallow.

As well as having to develop their principles and procedures, these security guarantees are likely to be on the agenda.

According to special Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, Putin has agreed to provide Ukraine with future security protections similar to NATO’s Article 5 self-defence pact, according to Witkoff’s CNN report on Sunday. An attack against a NATO member is regarded as an attack against all members of the military alliance, according to Article 5.

Von der Leyen applauded the US’s suggestion of providing security guarantees in the manner of NATO, noting that “the coalition of the willing, including the European Union, is ready to do its share.”

Trump is anticipated to provide in-depth information about his discussions with Putin.

What position does Ukraine hold?

Russia has long pressed for NATO membership, a scenario that Ukraine has vehemently opposed. Analysts see the security guarantees between Europe and the US as a potential substitute for easing Ukraine’s desire for security.

After the meetings’ conclusion on Monday, more clarity is anticipated.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy described Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and subsequent invasion of eastern Ukraine as a cautionary tale, suggesting that Ukraine should cede its land to Russia.

According to Zelenskyy, the current situation is “not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and a portion of our East, part of Donbass,” and Putin merely used it as a springboard for a new attack. … [Crimea] should not have been abandoned then, just as Ukrainians did not abandon Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv in the 2022 world.

What worries Europe?

Brussels has been concerned about Ukraine giving up land and its repercussions for Europe since Russia began to invade Ukraine in February 2022, specifically about the possibility that Russia might try to expand its borders beyond Ukraine.

Leaders of Europe will reiterate their opposition to any land swaps that favor Russia and reiterate their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Starmer praised Trump for making “the necessary steps” to end Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine, adding that Ukraine would not allow for the “path to peace” to emerge.

Additionally, he suggested that additional sanctions should be “squeezed” against Russia.

What position does the US hold?

Trump has increased pressure on Ukraine to accept a resolution to end Russia’s war after meeting Putin in Alaska, claiming that Zelenskyy would choose to end the conflict “almost right away.”

He also warned that any negotiated agreement would not allow the Ukrainian to accede to NATO and the Crimean peninsula.

“Remember how it began,” you ask. Obama didn’t get back Crimea (12 years ago), with no one else attempting to shoot it! NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things “do not change,” Trump stated on Sunday on his Truth Social platform.

Trump’s statements may sputter on the nerves of European diplomats who were trying to stop Zelenskyy from being publicly humiliated during his most recent White House visit in February, when he and US Vice President JD Vance accused him of disrespect and ingratitude.

Putin cups his hands around his mouth to speak at a media appearance.
On August 15, 2025, in Alaska, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Putin met.

Russia’s goals are unknown.

That isn’t entirely clear.

No arrangements were made for follow-up, working-level meetings, as would have been expected if any fundamental agreements had been reached, as previously mentioned, and no peace deal had been reached at the summit in Alaska.

As they discussed achieving a long-term peace agreement, Putin has also rejected Zelenskyy’s demands for a ceasefire.

Why is British horse racing going on strike?

British horse racing will hold a one-day strike in opposition to the proposed tax increase for betting on the sport.

Following four rescheduled meetings by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which claims a tax increase would hurt revenue and jobs, no fixtures will be held on September 10.

Contact us.

What scheduling changes have been made?

The following meetings have been changed to Wednesday, September 10th, making it a blank day.

Lingfield Park (afternoon) – 8 September (afternoon)

Carlisle (afternoon) – evening (9 September)

Uttoxeter (afternoon) to (evening) 11 September

What will happen on September 10th?

Leading jockeys, trainers, and owners will attend an event in Westminster where they will lobby MPs, but there won’t be any racing in the country.

The four-day St Leger meeting in Doncaster, which Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer attended last year, is on the eve of the event, which is the first time in modern history that the sport has voluntarily declined to compete.

What recommendations does the government make?

The Treasury wants to combine the Treasury’s existing online gambling obligations.

This could align with online gaming, such as casino and slot games, which are currently taxed at 21%, and raise the 15% rate paid by bookmakers for racing.

To reduce bureaucracy, a Treasury official stated: “We are consulting on aligning the treatment of online gambling with other forms of gambling.”

How would horse racing be impacted by tax increases?

With more than 1,400 matches played annually, horse racing is the second-largest spectator sport in the world after football.

The sport’s leaders are concerned that lower odds and customer bonuses will result in lower customer engagement, which could make betting on racing less appealing and potentially entice people to the black market.

Pricing checks for punters, which aim to reduce problem gambling, have already reduced betting turnover.

Reduced turnover has a knock-on effect because major bookmakers are required to donate 10% of racing profits through a levy, which raises more than £100 million annually and is used to fund race prize money and other charitable causes.

Increased taxes, according to activists and some MPs, could fund welfare programs and combat bad gambling.

According to an economic analysis conducted by the BHA, the industry could lose £330 million in revenue if the industry is aligned with the current tax rate paid by bookmakers to racing in the first five years.

What was the strike’s response?

Nicky Henderson, a renowned trainer of jumps, is one of the participants in the backseat.

Although I don’t necessarily support using strikes as a tool, he said, “the message needs to be sent that this tax could cripple.”

It’s not a weapon to which I’d ordinarily advise using, but given the circumstances, I would say we’re likely to have few options.

The BGC, which represents bookmakers, online gambling companies, gaming companies, and casinos, claims it was not asked to participate.

The decision to reschedule matches was made without consulting the betting companies, whose support for the sport’s funding is crucial, the statement read.

Will the sport suffer as a result of the strike action?

The fixtures will be changed, but the change will cost around £200, 000 in lost revenue on the day, according to estimates.

It’s certainly not a decision we have taken lightly, BHA CEO Brant Dunshea told BBC Radio 5 Live.

The industry is united in their conviction that cost is a small price to pay to ensure government communication is delivered in a loud and clear manner.

The sport thinks racing betting should be treated differently from online chance games with fixed-profit margins offered by operators, where punters study their form and use their knowledge to place bets.

Is this a one-time strike?

As things stand, there are no more strikes planned.

The action aims to promote the BHA’s “Axe the Racing Tax” campaign. Around 10,000 people signed the petition against the proposed tax increases when the strike was made public on August 16th.

Sophie Turner left ‘retching’ after ‘vile’ snog from A-List star while filming

Reuniting with her former Game of Thrones co-star Kit Harington was more than awkward, according to Sophie Turner, who was retching.

Film star Sophie Turner says a snog with hunky co-star Kit Harington left them both feeling physically sick.

The Game of Thrones colleagues have what they call a sibling-like relationship, forged after playing brother and sister Jon Snow and Sansa Stark in the show. But when the script dropped for upcoming gothic horror movie The Dreadful, things got a little awkward.

Sophie, a producer on the film, thought Kit was perfect to play the male lead. But there was one issue – she was playing his potential love interest and the stars were left with a funny feeling after the snog. It comes after reports of Victoria Beckham’s four-word comment to Geri Horner amid Spice Girls ‘feud’.

While on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the 29-year-old confessed: “We put it out of our minds, and then when it came to shooting, we were both retching. It was vile. Honestly, the worst.” This comes as Sophie issued a savage response after she was mum-shamed over her kids.

Sophie explained that their friendly, close relationship had persisted even after Game of Thrones had ended. Due to their familiarity, the romantic scenes in the Dreadful were almost insurmountable.

When Natasha Kermani, the director, inquired about making the male lead for The Dreadful, Kit seemed to be the right choice. However, the reunion also had its problems, as she noted on the show how things started to get a little strange.

She recalled that Kit responded with the script, saying, “Yes, I’d love to, but this is going to be really weird, Soph. ” Then I went over the script once more, and it’s just kiss, kiss, sex, kiss. And I realized right away that my brother is here.

Their first encounter involved kissing, so the awkwardness quickly developed. Even a scene from her thriller Trust, in which cockroaches and rats crawled over her, didn’t compare to that scene. She acknowledged that “Kissing Kit was still worse.”

The Dreadful takes place in 15th-century England, set against the backdrop of the Wars of the Roses, and follows Anne, played by Sophie, as her fragile relationship with her mother-in-law Morwen unravels when a man from her past appears and causes a dangerous sequence of events.

Oscar-winning actors Laurence O’Fuarain, Jonathan Howard, and Marcia Gay Harden also make the cast. Although a release date has not yet been determined, the movie is already generating positive publicity thanks to its well-known lead actors.

Although Jon Snow’s true Targaryen heritage was later revealed, viewers still had a strong connection to Sansa’s family, which makes the idea of a relationship between the two particularly unsettling. Before joining Vogue, Sophie once said, “Sorry guys, it’s weird for everyone.”

This comes after her recent confession that she once accidentally broke up a celebrity couple at a Comic-Con afterparty. A simple wave to an actor her friend admired spiralled into chaos when his fiancée confronted Turner for “flirting” with him.

The pair’s engagement was ended the same night. Turns out, because of my [wave], they broke off their engagement that night. I didn’t realize I had this influence.

‘I went to the Topshop runway show – it was more than just a comeback’

I attended Topshop’s runway show in Trafalgar Square, and it was more than a comeback: the brand truly felt like itself once more, from the crowd to the clothes, the atmosphere, and the atmosphere.

The show truly felt like a blast in the past(Image: Dave Benett)

Over the weekend, Topshop took over Trafalgar Square, marking their return to the fashion industry.

Topshop unveiled their most recent collection at an open-air fashion show in central London for the first time in seven years. After years of being a part of ASOS, the event also celebrated the launch of the brand’s standalone website.

Following the demise of Arcadia Group, Topshop became a part of ASOS since 2021. Topshop’s identity has frequently felt hidden in plain sight because ASOS has more than 800 brands in stock.

But this year, they’re stepping forward and doing it boldly. In May, they hosted a exclusive pop-up with Defected Records – where they showcased a new collection inspired by Ibiza fashion, followed by another campaign pop up at Tottenham Court Road’s Outernet, this time featuring an exclusive live DJ performance by Wes Nelson.

It was a blast from the past, a reminder of when Topshop was more than just a store, but also a fashion mecca, for me and many others who attended. a place that stylefully brought people together.

Trafalgar Square was packed; from loyal Topshop fans to supermodel Cara Delevingne and even London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Speaking to Sky News, Cara said: “It was like nostalgia mixed with something eclectic but also something brand new. For me, it really brings back a time of exploration of my own fashion sense because I think for me at Topshop I got to discover so much.”

A live DJ played music that was on point with the fits coming out, and the energy was high. Standout pieces from the collection include structured leather jackets, oversized tailoring, dramatic coats, and a strong focus on denim, which so many people have missed. Additionally, the brand’s renowned range was showcased in slick eveningwear and layering knits.

The decision to stage a physical runway show for the company signaled confidence in their relaunch. From the clothing to the music, the atmosphere was unstoppable. This one stood out because I attended all three of their events this year. It had a powerful and nostalgic feel. Not many companies can resurrect after years of silence and still do so.

The absence of a dress code helped the crowd, who was diverse, stylish, and expressive. That choice allowed the event to feel true to the values that Topshop has always embodied: individuality, self-expression, and a sense of style without restrictions. I had no idea what to wear at first, but I soon realized there was no wrong choice, which was lovely.

It was refreshing to see that the brand was acknowledging its roots while also looking forward, as Denim had always been a defining component of Topshop’s identity.

This Topshop event felt different from the previous one I’ve attended this year. It was a clear indication that Topshop is stepping out of the shadow of ASOS and reintroducing itself on its own terms. It was loud, bold, and hard to miss.
