We Must Go Beyond Hope, Work Toward Credible Elections In 2027 — Clement Nwankwo

Clement Nwankwo, the organizer of the Civil Society Situation Room, has emphasized the necessity of deliberate action to ensure 2027’s credible elections, warning that any effort wasted.

Nwankwo, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said, “If I say I’m hopeful but don’t, nothing happens.” We don’t act when I say I’ve lost hope. I’ve witnessed unconstitutional rule and dictatorship in action. Nothing can prevent our democracy from surviving.

He emphasized that Nigeria needs to actively pursue electoral reforms rather than just optimism.

Nwankwo also criticised political party internal structures, claiming that there is still a lot of internal democracy and fairness.

Arlene Phillips reveals ‘tough’ Strictly exit after finding out about axe on radio

Arlene Phillips, a former Strictly Come Dancing judge, described her exit from the BBC dance competition as “tough” and compared it to the most recent scandals.

Arlene Phillips has admitted she found her Strictly Come Dancing exit “tough,” after being suddenly replaced without warning. The dancer and former judge, 82, saw her departure from the hit BBC competition spark an ageism row as Alesha Dixon, then 30, took her place.

Despite having decades of experience as a dancer and choreographer, Arlene found out about the bosses’ decision through the radio rather than being told directly. Controversy has continued to surround the dance competition over the years, with actress Amanda Abbington sparking a bullying row.

Giovanni Pernice, her dance partner, denied bullying during their time together in 2023. Wynne Evans was kicked off the tour this year because of his behavior, and the drama off stage persisted once more.

Since then, Arlene has revealed details about both her exit and the subsequent scandals. She stated to The Sunday Times, “I loved my time on Strictly, and it was difficult leaving.”

Although some of the dancers were accused of bullying, I wasn’t there when I began teaching. The dancer credits her children with helping her learn to communicate without losing her composure.

She admitted that she didn’t want to lose her temper when I was younger because I didn’t want to talk to people in a different way. Without shouting, there are ways to persuade others to do whatever they want.

Last year, Arlene admitted she ‘kicked, screamed and sobbed’ when she found out she was getting the boot from her beloved show. She had joined Strictly in 2004, but after the show wrapped in 2008, Arlene found out she’d got the chop.

The decorated Dame openly admitted how she handled the news when she spoke about the axe in a conversation with the Mirror. She stated, “I gave myself 48 hours to kick, scream, cry, and sob, and then I forced myself to wake up and get on with it.”

After learning the news, Arlene went on to say that she thought she hadn’t asked the appropriate questions and that she had later had more time to reflect. She continued, “My manager died, and I was very fragile.”

“I wanted to know the exact reason behind their decision to let me go, but they kept me waiting for so long with the possibility that there would be five judges.”

Arlene was rumored to have been fired because BBC thought she was too old at the time. She claimed she was still unaware of the reason behind her dismissal and was replaced by Alesha, who had never critiqued a dance show but who was later declared Strictly champion.

Arlene exuded elegance when describing the abrupt conclusion of her time on the show, saying that because she was grown up, you just get on with it when things don’t go your way.

However, the former judge was unwavering when asked if she was considering returning to the show and said, “I would never think about it, so I would never think about it.” It’s not even an option.

Alcaraz Survives, Sabalenka Cruises On Wimbledon’s Hottest Opening Day

Aryna Sabalenka kept her cool on the hottest opening day in the history of the tournament while Carlos Alcaraz outlived a major scare in his opening match on Monday.

The All England Club’s average temperature on Monday was 32 degrees (89.6), breaking the previous record of 29.3 degrees set in 2001 for the start of the competition.

In a grueling four hours and 37 minute fight on Centre Court, Alcaraz defeated Fabio Fognini, 38, to claim 7-5, 7-5, 2-6, and 6-1.

A defending champion had to be in the fifth set for the first time since Roger Federer’s 2010 defeat to Alejandro Falla.

As the world number two fought back from the heat, Alcaraz shrugged off a consistent display, including 62 unforced errors.

“Fabio’s last Wimbledon is probably his last one because his level shows he can play for three or four more years,” said the Spaniard.

“Playing on Center Court is never simple when you play in a tournament.” The experience of Wimbledon is unique. I made an effort to play my best, but I think I could do better.

As medics arrived to the woman’s aid during the match, the 22-year-old immediately gave a bottle of water to the collapsed spectator who had rushed to the aid of the spectator.

Alcaraz faces British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in the second round, who has never lost in a Grand Slam first round.

The five-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Novak Djokovic, and five-time champion Bjorn Borg, is attempting to become the fifth player to have won at least three Wimbledon titles in a row.

Former England captain David Beckham and former England manager Gareth Southgate watched the action from the royal box as the crowds and players sought shade during the London heatwave.

Sabalenka, the top female qualifier, defeated Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine on Court One, 6-1, 7-5, to beat the heat.

The 27-year-old Belarusian won three Grand Slam titles in 2014, but he lost in the Australian Open and French Open finals three sets.

The world no. 1 missed the previous year’s tournament with a shoulder injury and has never gone beyond the Wimbledon semi-finals.

“I had a fantastic time. Marie Bouzkova, the 48th world number, will next face Czech world number 45 Sabalenka.

Ons Jabeur, a two-time Wimbledon champion, cried before resuming her first-round encounter with Viktoriya Tomova for an unnamed reason.

When Jabeur’s clash with the Bulgarian world number 111 came to an abrupt conclusion, Tunisian was 7-6 (7/5), 2-0.

Daniil Medvedev, a former US Open champion and past-winning semi-finalist, lost to France’s Benjamin Bonzi in a meltdown.

The fuming Russian slammed his racquet against his chair at the end of the match to claim 7-6 (7/2), 33-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2).

Additionally, Stefanos Tsitsipas retired with an injury, while Danish eighth seed Holger Rune lost to Chilean world number 143 Nicolas Jarry, who had previously won the title, and former champion Matteo Berrettini crashed out.

Sonay Kartal, a British tennis player, defeated former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 2-6, and 6-2.

Madison Keys, the reigning Australian Open champion, defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-7, (7), 7-5, 7-5, 7-5, 7-5, but British Open champion Katie Boulter, the ninth seed, lost in three sets to British Open champion Madison Keys.

Emma Raducanu, the former US Open champion, defeated fellow Briton Mimi Xu 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round with Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion.

Due to Wimbledon’s curfew at 2300 local time, third seed Alexander Zverev and Arthur Rinderknech and fifth seed Taylor Fritz and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard were both suspended.

In order to protect the players’ health, Wimbledon has a heat rule.

Xu ‘loved’ Wimbledon debut despite loss to Raducanu

Despite falling to Emma Raducanu in straight sets in the first round, Mimi Xu, a teenager, “loved every single moment” of her senior Wimbledon debut.

Xu, 17, who had earned a wildcard for the Championships, defeated Raducanu 6-3, 6-3, to seal the match.

Xu hopes the experience will motivate her to play in SW19 as the first Welsh player to do so in 20 years.

Xu told BBC Sport Wales, “I loved every second of it.”

“I wouldn’t claim that it was my dream debut because it was undoubtedly my dream debut,” he said.

However, I feel truly honoured and happy that this was my debut.

I don’t believe I could have asked for more than that to play against a fellow Brit who is a Grand Slam champion on a big court.

The atmosphere, the court, and the crowd are all there. It wasn’t for me to stop.

Earlier this month, Swansea-born Xu had won notable titles at the Birmingham, Ilkley, and Nottingham Open.

She defended her 2021 US Open champion, saying, “I’ve come so far even from last year.

“It’s obvious that my game is different from Emma’s, but I genuinely believe I can succeed there.”

“I was telling people that this was my best grass season ever, even before Wimbledon.”

Everything else was a bonus because the last three years I’ve played on the women’s side included only one victory and one defeat in my first competition.

My good stuff is really good, in my opinion. She continued, “It’s just fine tuning and cleaning a few bits here and there.”

“But I sincerely believe that I am so capable that this is what has ignited my inner fire.”
