Spurs captain Romero signs new four-year contract

Cristian Romero, the captain of Tottenham Hotspur, has agreed to renew his four-year contract.

The Argentina centre-back, 27, signed for Spurs from Atalanta in August 2021, initially on loan before being made permanent the following summer.

In the Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United, he led the team in eight goals and made 126 appearances for the club.

Romero was named club captain by new head coach Thomas Frank after being heavily linked with a summer move to Atletico Madrid. Under the terms of the contract, Romero will remain there until 2029.

Romero, who helped Spurs win the Europa League in the previous campaign, said he was “very happy” with the team and that he anticipated a “special season” for the team.

“We want to win,” Why won’t we possibly win this season? Everyone values an additional trophy presented by the club, Romero said.

Romero was referred to as a player who “sets the standards” both on and off the pitch, according to Frank’s statement last week.

The Spurs manager said, “His leadership qualities are what I like about him and why I chose him to be his captain.”

“He’s never had that kind of training,” the staff told me. He is performing very well. A player like this will want to take the team’s pressure and lead.

Following right-back Djed Spence, the former Belgrano defender has signed a new long-term contract. He had two more years on his previous deal.

Spence, 25, moved to Middlesbrough in 2022, but had to make up for his difficult start to his Spurs career and spent time on loan at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa.

He made 42 appearances for former boss Ange Postecoglou, scoring twice, and made an important contribution to his former side last season.

Air Canada strike continues, suspends financial guidance

The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has declared that the strike, which has resulted in the dismissal of 10,000 members of the cabin crew, is unlawful because the strikers ignored the workers’ orders to go back to work.

Following a previous directive that employees must return to work on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (18:00 GMT), the regulatory board made the call on Monday.

The airline’s cabin crew argued for a negotiated resolution, claiming that binding arbitration would relieve the airline of its pressure. According to workers, the proposed wage increases are insufficient to match the federal minimum wage and keep up with inflation.

The attendants are also asking for compensation for tasks like boarding passengers while working on the ground. They are no longer paid when aircraft are moving, which has sparked some vocal Canadian support on social media.

The cabin crews should be “compensated equitably at all times,” according to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Carney pressed for a resolution, noting that “practically hundreds of thousands of Canadians and visitors to our countries are being hampered by this action.”

The airline, which is a member of the global Star Alliance network, typically transports 130, 000 passengers per day during the airline’s current peak summer travel season.

Due to the fact that Air Canada’s aircraft were still grounded on Monday, the company suspended its third-quarter and annual profit projections.

The union vowed to keep on the strike and to “negotiate a fair deal” with Air Canada.

A nudge from the government

The government has two options right now: requesting an expedited hearing and requesting the court to impose the return order.

The minority government might also attempt to pass legislation that would require the consent of political rivals and approval of both the Canadian Parliament’s breaks until September 15.

According to Dionne Pohler, professor of dispute resolution at Cornell University’s Industrial and Labor Relations School, “the government will be very reticent to be too heavy-handed because the Supreme Court has ruled that governments must be very cautious when removing the right to strike, even for public sector workers who may be deemed essential.”

According to Pohler, encouraging bargaining might be a second option.

Requests for comment were not responded to by the government.

The CIRB ordered a binding arbitration order on Saturday, and Carney’s liberal government responded by putting an end to the strike. The order was requested by Air Canada, but unionized flight attendants objected to it, and the CIRB, an independent administrative tribunal that interprets and applies Canada’s labor laws, did so.

It is unusual for a union to defy a CIRB order, but the previous government, led by former prime minister Justin Trudeau, intervened last year to stop rail and dock strikes that threatened to cripple the economy.

Over the weekend, travelers at Toronto Pearson International Airport expressed confusion and frustration over the availability of their flights.

Francesca Tondini, an Italian who lives nearby and is a 50-year-old man, said she was in favor of the union despite not knowing when she would be able to return home.

She grinned and pointed to the striking attendants, “They are right.”

How airlines compensate flight attendants is a factor in the conflict between the cabin crew and Air Canada. The majority of them, including Air Canada, only pay them when aircraft are moving.

Flight attendants in both Canada and the United States have asked for pay for hours worked, including for tasks like boarding passengers, in recent contract negotiations.

The clock must be set for paying flight attendants when passengers board according to new labor agreements between American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

American flight attendants now receive pay for the extra hours that pass between flights. The cabin crews on United Airlines, who rejected a tentative contract agreement last month, also want a similar clause.

As of 12 p.m. (GMT) at 12 p.m. on the market, Air Canada’s stock had fallen 1.6%. Another Star Alliance member, United Airlines, which serves several important Canadian cities and does not have a striking cabin crew, is up 1.4 percent.

Trump’s changing stance on Ukraine war

NewsFeed

Even after promising to put an end to the conflict in his first 24 hours of office, US President Trump has repeatedly changed his mind regarding the Ukraine conflict. He and Russian President Putin are pushing for a peace deal that ignores a ceasefire eight months later, which puts them in conflict with Kyiv and its allies.

Wissa deletes all Brentford links on social media

As his uncertain future takes a new turn, Yoane Wissa has removed all ties to Brentford from his Instagram account.

The DR Congo forward wants to join Newcastle after being excluded from the squad for Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

This summer, Brentford turned down at least one offer for the forward, according to the Magpies.

Wissa threatened to not play or train for the club again if it did not approve of his protracted move to St James’ Park after arriving early from their pre-season camp in Portugal.

The 28-year-old returned to first-team training while continuing to make clear that he wanted to join Newcastle after there had been a minor thawing of relations since then.

After the west London side completed the signing of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth, Wissa has been anticipating that the Bees will approve his move to Tyneside this week.

However, according to sources, Brentford are still hesitant to let Wissa leave because they believe he is now worth more than the original £40m asking price.

According to reports, Brentford is now willing to pay £60 million for Wissa, who did not play for the team in the pre-season.

The forward has now removed all images of him training or playing for the club from his official Instagram page, causing the conflict between Wissa and Brentford to escalate.

Tottenham is also interested, but Newcastle’s move appears to be more recent. Will Brentford decide to let him go before the transfer deadline?

The Jam drummer Rick Buckler leaves huge fortune to wife and smaller sum to relative

Rick Buckler, the drummer for the Jam, tragically passed away in February of this year in a tribute show as his bandmates Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton.

The Jam legend Rick Buckler left a huge fortune to his wife and kids following his death back in February at the age of 69. The Mod icon passed away earlier this year after a short illness.

He had been a member of the iconic rock band, alongside Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton, from 1972 to 1982 and they spawned huge classic hits like Going Underground and Town Called Malice.

The rock star’s wife Lesley, who he married 40 years ago in 1985, and their two children, have now been revealed. He left £1 million in his will.

According to reports, Rick passed almost everything to Lesley in October of this year. Additionally, he requested that Jason and Holly, his two children, Jason and Holly, receive a portion of his beloved Jam memorabilia collection.

While just £1,000 was to be given to his brother Peter, another £1,000 to pal Ian Gardner and £5,000 to Sham 69 singer Tim Scargill, according to the will document obtained by The Sun.

Rick is said to have requested that his assets be distributed, as well as that he would like to be interred and cremated at Woking Cemetery. Before they started The Jam in the early seventies, he was born in Surrey, where he met Paul and Bruce.

His bandmates led the tributes, which included an announcement of his passing. “Rick’s passing shocked and saddens me,” Paul said. In my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking, I’m thinking back to all of us who are currently practicing. To all the bars and clubs we frequented as children, hoping to break records. What a journey ! What we created endured the test of time and far beyond our wildest dreams. My sincere sympathies to all P. W. x. family and friends.

Bruce responded, “I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good man and great drummer, whose creative drum patterns influenced the music we sang. I’m pleased that we got to work together as much as we did. In this difficult time, Leslie and his family are in my thoughts.

The news came shortly after Rick had been forced to cancel a recent spoken word tour due to “ongoing health issues”. On February 1, his team posted a message about the cancellation on Facebook, which read: “Rick and his team want all the fans of Rick and The Jam to know that due to ongoing health issues Rick has been advised to take a break from touring his spoken word events booked for the first quarter of 2025.”

It added Rick had been “really touched by the number of fans who have booked to see the shows, but presently he has been advised to rest, repair and build his physical strength in order to deal with touring up and down the UK.”

The post concluded with the statement, “Rick was really excited to bring his updated “in conversation” show to life in so many new venues and to both devoted fans and new audiences. Once more, I want to thank you for your ongoing love, support, and understanding. As time goes on, we’ll keep you informed. Rick anticipates seeing you all in the future.

A 2023 interview with Rick was resurfaced following his tragic death as he considered the split between the band and Paul Weller’s decision to break up the band.

In an interview with The Strange Brew, he shared: “The reason that Paul gave us was about why he wanted to leave the band in that initial meeting was rubbish, basically. He said that he really felt like he was on a treadmill, and that he wanted to get off.

We wanted to use this treadmill, though. We fought so hard to get on it because we always wanted to. So, to hear a member of the band saying, “Well, I want to get off now.” You conclude, “That’s crazy. That’s mad. “

Before the band’s official breakup, Paul resigned from Polydor Records and, in Rick’s opinion, just continued on the same treadmill. That made no sense, therefore, right away.

Alex Reid leaks bankrupt Katie Price counting cash video in latest twist in saga

The footage leaked by Katie’s ex Alex Reid shows her and daughter Princess counting cash and has been passed to her bankruptcy trustee, the Mirror understands. Reid has vowed that “the truth will now be heard”

Reality star Katie Price is facing fresh questions over her murky finances as a video emerges of her waving a wad of cash while bankrupt.

Lounging on a sofa the glamour model, bankrupted twice over debts totalling more than £3m, says that she is “enjoying counting” the pile of cash in front of her, saying “there’s loads here … I’m just sorting it out”. Asked by her daughter Princess if she would contribute towards her school fees and those of her second child with ex-husband Peter Andre, Price says “Your dad can sit on that” and lifting a middle finger.

Wearing white jodhpurs and sat next to a Christmas tree, she adds: “Does he go on about it a lot? Well it’s tough because I’m in bankruptcy to next May now.” Price also refers to a property – “my London flat” – which she claims to own but which does not appear to have been traced by her bankruptcy trustees.

The video was released today by Price’s ex, former cage fighter Alex Reid”, who said in a statement that “the truth will now be heard”. The Mirror understands that the one minute and 38 second video, believed to have been filmed in late 2020, has been sent to Price’s bankruptcy trustee who continues to “seek realisations from various third parties”.

Price has been celebrating the end of six years of “hell” after being discharged from two bankruptcies and claiming it is a ”great achievement”. But a source said: “A number of people have said that Katie deals in cash but this appears to be the first solid proof. There are lots of people owed a lot of money who now realise they are unlikely to ever get it. Katie gloating about it has stuck in the throat but this is not over.”

Price was bankrupted twice – first in 2019 over debts totalling £3.5m, including £970,639 to HMRC and then again last March over a second £761,994 unpaid HMRC demand for money earned while she was already bankrupt. Creditors include Alex Reid who is owed £175,000 in High Court damages and costs he was awarded after Price revealed a sex tape he says was filmed without his consent.

In the video, Price is heard claiming that she has “extended” the bankruptcy “because Alex Reid wants money from me and he won’t be able to get it … he’s an a***hole”. In a video statement released today, Reid said: “Over the years you have seen countless stories by Katie Price directed at me, Peter, Keiran and others. Today I want to be clear. I am spear-heading a campaign to expose the truth. This isn’t about gossip but about evidence. It’s not about rumour, it’s about reality. After years of silence, the time has finally come to reveal all.”

He is seen watching the leaked video of Price and reacting, with comments like “this is unbelievable”, “she just admitted she lied” and “has my legal team seen this?” Price said earlier this year on The Katie Price Show podcast: “I’m not bankrupt anymore! I’m out of it, I’m out of both of them. The last six years have been hell – mentally and personally – everything has been hell. I’ve worked so hard to communicate and get rid of what caused all the trouble and I’m out of it. It’s such a nice feeling not to be bankrupt anymore. I’m in control of everything now.”

Farheen Qureshi, who was made Price’s bankruptcy trustee in April 2023, told the Mirror: “You should be aware that, notwithstanding that Ms Price has been discharged from both her first and second Bankruptcies, both Bankruptcies are still live and continuing and, in my capacity as her Trustee, I am seeking realisations from various third parties for the respective Bankruptcy estates. I would not wish to prejudice in any way either the outcome of that hearing or the further investigations being undertaken.”

Alex Reid’s post today marks the latest escalation between Price and her exes. Last week, on Instagram, Peter Andre posted: “For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today.

He revealed that Princess and Junior, his children with Price, were put in his care by the family courts. He also cited court cases in 2011 and 2014 where Price had to pay damages over “false claims”. He added: “The same falsehoods are being repeated today. Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.”

In response, mum-of-five Price she would not be drawn into “tit for tat comments” but added: “I know I will always be seen as a sinner. That’s fair. I allowed myself to fall into a reliance on drugs and alcohol. At times I was not the mother I should have been while I struggled with mental illness. I have been at times a poor friend, an awful sibling, and an untrustworthy partner. I’ve self-medicated, been unfaithful, damaged myself and those that I love.”
