Sinner retires from Cincinnati final against Alcaraz with illness

Six days before Jannik Sinner, who was emotional, had a bad illness that prevented him from winning the US Open title.

World No. 1 Sinner lost 5-0 after 23 minutes on another hot day after being out of sorts right away with the first point of the highly anticipated showpiece.

After going a double break down, he called the trainer after losing another two games and sat with ice on his head during the first changeover.

After a brief conversation, Sinner apologized to the officials and the umpire, growing teary as he explained to them that he “felt really bad” for the fans.

The Italian embraced Alcaraz, walked out of the court, raised his hands in protest of the crowd, then sat down, covered his head, and hid his head in his towel.

Sinner expressed his disappointment with the audience, “I’m so sorry. I thought I would improve but after yesterday, I didn’t feel great.

I made an effort to come out, at least to make it a small match, but I was unable to get any further.

“I apologize a lot to everyone. I’m so sorry, because I’m aware that some of you had to work or do something else on Monday.

Alcaraz won his seventh overall championship in Cincinnati, which is his first since then, but as he later admitted, he didn’t want to win.

You don’t know anything, I can’t say. Alcaraz told Sinner, “You will come back even stronger than you always do.”

“You are one of the true champions,” they say.

The US Open mixed doubles on Tuesday in New York will feature Iga Swiatek, Alcaraz, and women’s finalist Iga Swiatek, but it’s unlikely that Sinner will join Katerina Siniakova as planned.

Sinner can find some consolation in the knowledge that illness, not injury, kept him from completing the match despite his obvious disappointment.

Before the final, he had not lost a set in Cincinnati and was on a 26-match winning streak on hard courts.

Regardless of the defeat, Sinner will continue to be world number one, but Alcaraz is on pace to take the top spot and will continue to be Sinner’s biggest rival for the US Open title.

Sinner is defending more ranking points than Alcaraz, who lost in the second round last year, and the pair can only compete in the final in New York.

Alcaraz won twice on clay in their previous meeting at Wimbledon, and Sinner won once more in their previous final. This was the pair’s fourth meeting of the year.

Sinner’s lack of movement and early attempts to escape trouble, however, gave the impression that something was wrong.

Alcaraz made just one unforced error from Sinner’s nine, scoring 21 of the 29 points on offer.

MSNBC reveals new name as part of corporate divorce from NBC

As part of its corporate divorce, MSNBC announced that it would switch its name to MS NOW, or My Source News Opinion World.

The TV network made the announcement on Monday, which has a roster that includes Rachel Maddow, Ari Melber, and Nicolle Wallace, and is intended for liberal audiences. As part of the change, which will take effect later this year, it will remove NBC’s peacock symbol from its logo and establish its own independent news division from NBC News.

NBC Universal, which spun off cable networks USA, CNBC, MSNBC, and E! in November, requested the name change. Versant, a division of Entertainment, Oxygen, and the Golf Channel. None of the other networks’ names are changing.

As a result of a partnership between Microsoft and NBC, MSNBC was given its name when it was founded in 1996. It was a confusing moniker to many even back then. However, it persisted even after the NBC/MSD partnership ended.

In the spinoff’s early stages, Versant CEO Mark Lazarus stated that MSNBC would remain, giving Monday’s announcement an unexpected turn-around.

Name changes always come with a risk, and according to MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, it’s difficult for employees to imagine the network operating under a different name. In a memo to the staff, she stated that this decision did not occur quickly or without much discussion.

During this period of transition, NBC Universal decided that its brand needed a fresh, distinct identity, she said. As we continue to create our own modern newsgathering organization, we now have the freedom to chart our own course and assert our independence.

Kutler claimed that the network’s editorial direction will remain unchanged. While our name will change, she said, “Who we are and what we do will not.”

It should be noted that CNBC’s business channel has chosen to discontinue “NBC.” According to MSNBC, CNBC has always maintained a greater separation and is less likely to cover many of the same subjects because of its business focus.

Tension has long been a result of a news division’s association between one that emphasizes objectivity and one that doesn’t conceal its liberal bent. The cable network is referred to as “MSDNC,” for Democratic National Committee, by US President Donald Trump.

In a recent episode of Pivot, Maddow pointed out that MSNBC will no longer be able to report content from outside the field in a way that rivals NBC News’.

We can use our own instincts, queries, and priorities to obtain information from reporters and correspondents in this situation, Maddow said. “And so it’s going to be better.”

New Morecambe owners sack manager Adams

The club’s manager was fired the day after being acquired by new owners Panjab Warriors in Morecambe.

Adams, 50, was appointed in June 2024 and was in his third year as the club’s manager.

Prior to joining the Shrimps in February 2022 and June 2021, The Scot had previously led them through the play-offs and from November 2022 to November.

Adams had stayed with Morecambe despite a turbulent pre-season with uncertainty surrounding the club’s long-term plans.

He leaves, however, after overseeing their relegation from League Two for 14 months.

In a “testing chapter,” the club expressed gratitude to Adams for the “leadership and steadiness he brought to the club.”

His return “instilled direction and purpose, helping guide Morecambe into League One for the first time in their history [in 2021] and stabilized the team under tremendous pressure,” it continued.

Morecambe to make outstanding wages

Morecambe announced Adams’ departure after the team revealed they had received funds from former owners Panjab Warriors to pay off outstanding wages and football creditors.

Following a turbulent summer during which Morecambe was suspended from the National League, Panjab Warriors completed their acquisition of the team on Sunday.

The club claimed that funds were also provided to pay all taxes to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in a statement on Monday.

By Wednesday, the club had promised to pay off its employees, liabilities, and football creditors.

Although Panjab Warriors’ original goal was to challenge for English Football League (EFL) promotion, “the events and circumstances of the past couple of months” would make it difficult to do so this season.

After receiving a three-game suspension from the National League, Morecambe were forced to postpone their opening three games. However, the league approved the deal, which gave them the go-ahead to begin the season against Altrincham on Saturday.

The club claimed that the transfer embargo would be lifted once those outstanding debts were settled, and that it had been set to continue until all football creditors, including players, staff, and HMRC, were paid.

The deal comes almost three years after Jason Whittingham’s ownership of Morecambe was terminated after his appointment as CEO in May 2018.
