Palestinians condemn Israel’s Ben-Gvir over Marwan Barghouti threat

Palestinian officials have condemned far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s taunting visit to the jail cell of long-imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti.

Footage of the visit shared on social media on Thursday showed the minister making threatening remarks to the 66-year-old.

In the footage, Ben-Gvir is seen telling Barghouti, who has been in prison since 2002, including years in solitary confinement: “You won’t win. Whoever messes with the nation of Israel, whoever murders our children and women – we will wipe them out.”

“You should know this, [this happened] throughout history,” Ben-Gvir added.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident “in the strongest terms”.

In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said Ben-Gvir’s actions were “an unprecedented provocation and organised state terrorism, falling within the framework of the crimes of genocide, displacement, and annexation faced by the prisoners and our people”.

It added that the Palestinian Authority will take the threat seriously and will follow up with the International Committee of the Red Cross, relevant states, the international community, and its specialised organisations and councils.

Barghouti’s wife, Fadwa, said he and other Palestinian prisoners are subjected to inhumane treatment behind bars.

“They are still, Marwan, chasing you and pursuing you even in the solitary cell you’ve been living in for two years, and the struggle of the occupation and its figures with you continues. The shackles are on your hands, but I know your spirit and determination, and I know you will remain free, free, free,” she wrote in a statement on Facebook.

“I know that the only thing that can shake you is what you hear about your people’s pain, and the only thing that crushes and wounds you is the failure to protect our sons and daughters. You are of the people; wherever you are among the people, you are one of them and part of them.”

‘Shocking’

Israel’s Channel 12 broadcast a video clip of Ben-Gvir’s visit at Ganot Prison in central Israel. The channel reported that the minister’s visit was intended to oversee stricter conditions for Palestinian prisoners.

The video marks the first time for years that footage of Barghouti has been published. His family and rights groups said he has been in solitary confinement since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023 after Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel.

Relatives of Barghouti who viewed the footage told Al Jazeera Arabic there was a “shocking” appearance in his features, apparently from “exhaustion and hunger”, and expressed fear that he would die in custody.

In October, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society accused Israeli prison staff of “brutally assaulting” and injuring Barghouti while he was being held in solitary confinement.

The claims that he has several times been beaten by prison staff have been denied by the Israel Prisons Service.

Japan minister visits controversial shrine to mark World War II anniversary

A Japanese cabinet minister was among thousands of people to visit a controversial war memorial in Tokyo as Japan marks 80 years since the end of World War II.

Agricultural Minister Shinjiro Koizumi on Friday paid his respects at the Yasukuni Shrine, a symbol of Japan’s militaristic past.

He was joined by dozens of national and local politicians from the far-right “Japan First” Sanseito Party, according to local media.

The Shinto shrine was built in the 19th century to honour Japan’s war dead, but it is best known for enshrining 14 Japanese “class A” war criminals and 1,000 others also found guilty by an Allied tribunal after World War II.

The Yasukuni Shrine is considered a political lightning rod in East Asia, where memories of Japan’s wartime atrocities are not forgotten, but senior Japanese leaders have continued to visit over the years.

But the shrine was just one site where Japanese people gathered on Friday to mark 80 years since Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s surrender in an August 15, 1945, radio broadcast.

Tokyo formally surrendered a few weeks later on September 2, 1945.

Japanese media reported that more than 4,000 people attended the National Memorial Ceremony for the War Dead in Tokyo, including Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

Ishiba spoke at the commemoration about the lessons Japan carried from the war.

“We should never repeat the devastation of war. We will never, ever make a mistake in choosing the path to take,” Ishiba said, according to Kyodo News.

Ishiba also spoke of Japan’s “remorse” over the war, marking the first time a Japanese prime minister used the term in more than a decade at a war memorial, the news outlet said.

Japan famously adopted a pacifist constitution after World War II, but wounds linger from decades of Japanese colonial rule in parts of Asia that lasted from 1895 to 1945.

The prime minister stopped short of directly mentioning Japan’s wartime aggression and the suffering it caused, a precedent set by past Japanese leaders, Kyodo said.

Japan’s Emperor Naruhito also attended the event, where he said he was “overcome with deep emotion” at Japan’s transformation since the end of World War II.

“It is my sincere hope that we carry on passing down the stories of the hardships endured during and after the war and continue in unity of spirit to seek peace and the happiness of the people in the future,” he said, according to Japanese media.

What prompted Peter Andre’s furious statement at ex-wife Katie Price

After Katie Price urged Peter Andre to have a sit-down chat with her about their kids, Peter Andre took to his social media page to release a statement

Peter Andre shocked fans when he released a brutal statement at ex-wife Katie Price after ‘staying silent’ for almost two decades. The Mysterious Girl singer, 52, took to his Instagram Stories this week to shed light on his tumultuous relationship with Katie after she made claims about their children’s ‘welfare’.

The singer shares Princess, 18, and Junior, 20, with the former glamour model but have been at loggerheads for years. After Katie slammed those producing Princess’ debut reality series, where the teen was seen with her dad multiple times but not so much with Katie, she asked Peter to sit down to end their feud.

Peter had enough of her comments and took to his Stories to hit out at her. He said: “For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today.”

“The latest comments about my children’s welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood.

“In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children.”

He continued: “In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases, found my ex-wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. The same falsehoods are being repeated today.

“Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.”

Not long before his post, Katie urged him to have a sit-down chat with her about their kids. She said on her podcast, The Katie Price Show: “There’s no reason why both parents just can’t be there to support her. Now this isn’t about me. I have to clarify this. I don’t care that I’m not in Princess’s show.

“I don’t need to raise my profile by being on Princess’s show, I do enough stuff. All what I want to do, is just whatever my daughter does, and it’s the same with Junior, I don’t care if I’m in the background, but I want to watch her do her photo shoots, I wanna watch her do her signings, because that’s what I did.

“And my mom and you and Nan used to come along and support, and I’m proud of her. And I just wanna be there with her because I now I feel that I’ve missed out on so much. It’s so not fair to bring Princess piggy in the middle. So I think it’s about time all of us adults just sit down and talk about what their beef is with me and just get over it.

She added: “Life would be more at peace because I don’t have a problem. I just think life would be a better place. Well, I’m not saying we all have to be best buddies, best friends, but come on. For the sake of the children, there’s room for everyone to support your kids. Do you know what I mean?”

Sophie, Katie’s sister, also urged her niece to ‘put her foot down’ and include the former glamour model in the TV show.

Mock the Week star Milton Jones reveals he is ‘cancer free’ after undergoing surgery

Mock the Week star, Milton Jones, thanked the doctors and nurses who had helped during his treatment for prostate cancer following his diagnosis earlier this year

Comedian, Milton Jones, has announced he is cancer free and will be extending his stand-up tour after cancelling several dates earlier this year following his diagnosis.

The 61-year-old, who is known for his appearances on cancelled BBC Two show Mock the Week, thanked the doctors and nurses who had helped him amid his treatment for prostate cancer and said he is “in a completely different place” now.

A statement from the popular comic read: “A few months ago, I had to stop my tour Ha!Milton because I needed treatment for prostate cancer. I’m glad to say I’ve had that treatment and am now cancer free!” It comes as singer, Jessie J, bravely revealed her hair was falling out following her surgery for breast cancer.

Milton continued to the PA News Agency: “So, many thanks to all the doctors and nurses who helped me get better – I couldn’t do their job (I tried, but apparently you have to be qualified).

“A big thank you to my family, friends, all those who helped reschedule things and the many others who have been so nice to me.

“Along with all those who have kept hold of their tickets for the shows that have been rescheduled and apologies to those whose shows we were unable to move.

“I have to admit there were a few dark moments when I wondered if anyone would ever see me again, but then I realised that I was leaning against the light switch.

“Thankfully I’m now in a completely different place, and if you look at my website, you’ll see that very soon I’ll be in lots of other different places on tour too – Milton Jones I hope to see you there.”

In April, Jones announced his diagnosis in an Instagram post where he explained he would be needing time to recover after undergoing surgery.

In the comments, Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, who has incurable stage four prostate cancer, said: “Really sorry to hear it mate, best of luck.”

The NHS says prostate cancer develops slowly, so there may be no signs for years, but says symptoms may include an increased need to urinate, straining while urinating and a feeling that the bladder has not fully emptied.

Jones rescheduled some gigs for the summer following his diagnosis and has now announced 20 more shows to take place across September, October and November in cities and towns that include Exeter, Guildford, St Albans, Newbury, Crewe, Wrexham and Bury St Edmunds.

His stand-up show, Ha!Milton, which is scheduled to end in November, is a play on words, making reference to the hit musical of the same name.

The star’s career has seen him perform on Live At The Apollo, Lee Mack’s All Star Cast and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

Man City sign Arsenal’s Wienroither until 2027

Getty Images

Manchester City have signed defender Laura Wienroither from Arsenal on a two-year contract following a positive loan spell.

The 26-year-old spent the second half of last season with City after joining initially on a short-term basis in January, making eight appearances.

Wienroither moved to Arsenal from Hoffenheim in January 2022 and played 51 times for the Gunners.

The Austria international said making a permanent move to City, who finished fourth in the Women’s Super League last season, was a “no-brainer”.

Wienroither said: “I really enjoyed the last six months. I feel like I settled in well.

“I really like the girls, I really like the staff. So, when the opportunity came up that I can stay, I didn’t have to think twice.”

She has committed to City until 2027 and expects to be challenging for silverware.

“This club is made to win titles, to win trophies, and I’m here to do that,” Wienroither said. “The team definitely has the qualities and potential to do that, and we do have a very successful future ahead.”

Wienroither suffered an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury in May 2023 and spent 11 months on the sidelines, making her return to the Arsenal team in April 2024 before signing a new contract with the Gunners two months later.
