Scepticism and hope for end to Gaza war before Trump-Netanyahu meeting

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting the United States on Monday, a visit analysts expect will focus on celebrating Israel and the US’s self-anointed victory against Iran and discussing a proposal for a ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza.

This is the third time this year Netanyahu will be meeting US President Donald Trump, who claims the US and Israel “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear programme during a 12-day war and that he would resume bombing Iran if it restarts nuclear activities.

Last week, Trump said Israel had agreed to conditions for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, which would allow all parties to work towards an end to Israel’s 21-month-long war on the besieged enclave.

On July 4, Hamas gave a “positive” response to Qatari and Egyptian mediators about the latest ceasefire proposal.

Is a ceasefire realistic?

On Friday, after Hamas’s response to the proposal, Trump said there could be a “deal next week” and promised to be “very firm” with Netanyahu to ensure a ceasefire.

Israel has since said that Hamas has requested changes to the proposal that it found “unacceptable”, but that Israeli negotiators would be going to Qatar on Sunday to discuss the proposal.

According to a leaked copy of the deal obtained by Al Jazeera, the ceasefire entails a 60-day pause in hostilities and a phased release of some of the 58 Israeli captives held in Gaza since a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 57,000 people, mostly women and children, in what United Nations experts, legal scholars and human rights groups describe as a genocide against Palestinians.

Many experts told Al Jazeera that they are not optimistic a temporary ceasefire will lead to a permanent end to the war.

“The way [the ceasefire talks] are being framed leaves me sceptical,” said Omar Rahman, an expert on Israel-Palestine with the Middle East Council for Global Affairs.

Rahman added that he believes Trump was focused on getting the Israeli captives released, but not on ending the war and the suffering of the people of Gaza.

Trump previously promised an end to the war after pushing for a ceasefire just days before he became president in January.

However, two months later, Trump did nothing when Israel unilaterally resumed its attacks on Gaza, killing thousands more people.

Mairav Zonszein, an expert on Israel-Palestine for the International Crisis Group, said that could happen again.

“It all rests on Trump and the US to sustain real pressure [on Netanyahu], but that is highly doubtful,” she told Al Jazeera.

“I’m optimistic there could be some kind of ceasefire, but longevity and the terms are highly questionable,” Zonszein said.

“It’s also possible we could see a ceasefire that does not last because … Israel still every so often just bombs something without repercussions [in Gaza],” she added.

Yaser al-Banna, a Palestinian journalist in Gaza, said many in the Strip are divided over whether a ceasefire will end the war. While everyone prays it will, some people cannot imagine Netanyahu sticking to a deal.

Netanyahu insists that the war will not end without a “total victory” over Hamas, a concept he has not defined.

“About half the people in Gaza are very pessimistic… The other half believes this time could be different due to shared interests among Israel, the Palestinians, Arab states and the US to end this war,” he said.

Glory and pragmatism

Many analysts believe that Trump is driven by his desire to strike grandiose deals in order to boast about his achievements in global affairs.

On Monday, he is likely to take credit for ostensibly dismantling Iran’s nuclear programme – even though that may not be true – and express his desire to retrieve the rest of the Israeli captives in Gaza.

He also wants to get the “Gaza issue” out of the way to pursue more normalisation deals between Israel and neighbouring Arab states, said Khaled Elgindy, an expert on Israel-Palestine and a professor of Arab Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

“Trump wants to be able to say that he got back the Israeli hostages… and got a Palestinian state… Then he can call himself master of the universe, but getting those things is much harder than he thinks,” Elgindy told Al Jazeera.

It’s unclear whether Netanyahu’s political calculations align with Trump’s ambitions.

Israel’s next parliamentary elections have to take place before October 2026, and Netanyahu could go to the polls sooner, riding on a likely wave of popularity if he succeeds in returning the remaining captives.

Like Trump, he would also tout what he terms a stunning victory against Iran to the Israeli public.

Those considerations are important because it is likely that Netanyahu’s frail far-right coalition, held together by pressure to prolong the war on Gaza, would collapse if a permanent ceasefire is reached, said Hugh Lovatt, an expert on Israel-Palestine with the European Council on Foreign Relations.

“At the end of [the possible] 60-day ceasefire, [Netanyahu] could go to elections by committing to a full end to the war and collapse his coalition; or he could go back to war to keep his [far-right] coalition together should he judge the time not right for elections,” he told Al Jazeera.

A possible, nearly unfathomable, outcome

Staying in office is particularly important for Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, who faces several domestic legal charges of fraud and bribery.

During his much-anticipated meeting with Trump, experts expect them to discuss Netanyahu’s trial, which many believe plays a large role in dictating his political calculations.

Netanyahu’s position as prime minister has enabled him to undermine the Israeli judicial system by appointing loyalists to high courts and delaying court hearings – an influence he would lose if his coalition unravels.

Trump is acutely aware of Netanyahu’s dilemma.

On June 25, he called on Israel to drop the charges against Netanyahu, referring to the trial as a “witch hunt”. Trump’s comments suggest that he is trying to pressure Netanyahu’s opponents to issue a pardon in exchange for ending the war on Gaza, said Georgetown’s Elgindy.

Elgindy referenced Trump’s recent social media post where he alluded to suspending military aid to Israel unless charges against Netanyahu were dropped.

“The United States of America spends Billions of Dollars a year, far more than any other Nation, protecting and supporting Israel. We are not going to stand for this,” Trump wrote on June 28.

That would be a major – almost unfathomable – decision to emerge out of the meeting between Trump and Netanyahu, said Elgindy.

“I don’t see him following through, but this is a typical [threat] that Trump would make,”  he told Al Jazeera.   “His [modus operandi] is to blackmail and coerce. That is his version of diplomacy. ”

Elgindy added that it was distressing that Trump would threaten to cut military aid to Israel to protect Netanyahu and not beleaguered, starving Palestinians in Gaza.

The decision to pardon Netanyahu lies with Israel’s President Isaac Herzog, but such a move would be unprecedented, and the president has not indicated that he plans to do so.

Analysts believe Herzog may be willing to pardon Netanyahu if he agrees to exit political life, but not simply to secure a ceasefire.

Zonszein, from Crisis Group, adds that there are lawyers and justices in Israel who have warned “for years” that it is in the public’s interest to reach a plea bargain with Netanyahu due to the power he holds over the country.

Their only condition is for Netanyahu to agree to leave politics.

Elon Musk launches the America Party as feud with Trump escalates

Billionaire Elon Musk has followed through on his pledge to create a new political party in the United States after President Donald Trump signed his controversial budget legislation, the so-called “One Big, Beautiful Bill”, into law.

Musk in a post on X on Saturday declared the formation of the “America Party“, to “give back” the people of the US their freedom and challenge what he called the nation’s “one-party system”.

He cited a poll, uploaded on Friday – the US’s Independence Day – in which he asked whether respondents “want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system” that has dominated US politics for some two centuries.

The yes-or-no survey earned more than 1. 2 million responses.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! ” Musk wrote on Saturday.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” he declared.

The move comes amid a worsening of the feud between the world’s richest man and Trump over the new budget law, which the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said would bankrupt the US.

Musk was Trump’s main campaign financier during the 2024 election, and led the Department of Government Efficiency from the start of the president’s second term, aimed at slashing government spending.

The two have since fallen out spectacularly over disagreements about the “Big, Beautiful Bill”.

Musk said previously that he would start a new political party and spend money to unseat lawmakers who supported the bill, which experts say will pile an extra $3. 4 trillion over a decade onto the US deficit.

“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk had said.

There was no immediate comment from Trump or the White House on Musk’s announcement.

Trump earlier this week threatened to cut off the billions of dollars in subsidies that Musk’s companies receive from the federal government, and to deport the South African-born tycoon.

“We’ll have to take a look,” the president told reporters when asked if he would consider deporting Musk, who has held US citizenship since 2002.

It is not clear how much impact the new party will have on the 2026 mid-term elections, or on the presidential vote two years after that.

On Friday, after posting the poll, Musk laid out a possible political battle plan to pick off vulnerable House of Representatives and Senate seats, and for the party to become “the deciding vote” on key legislation.

“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” Musk posted on X.

All 435 US House seats are up for grabs every two years, while about one-third of the Senate’s 100 members, who serve six-year terms, are elected every two years.

Made In Chelsea star ‘doesn’t recognise herself’ since leaving show

Former Made In Chelsea castmate Jessica Woodley opens up about her pregnancy journey – and swapping the show’s dramas for a quiet life in ‘magical’ Ireland with her filmmaker partner

Jessica’s life is a million miles away now from the posh Chelsea set(Image: Instagram)

Former Made In Chelsea star Jessica Woodley no longer recognises the version of herself that appeared on the E4 show about London’s exclusive social set a decade ago. Now aged 30, the reality star-turned-sculptor says she’s more self-aware and, as she prepares to become a mother for the first time, feels ‘‘more power as a woman”.

Jessica, who joined the reality series in 2015 — and dated Jamie Laing before quitting in 2017 — revealed last month that she was expecting a baby with her filmmaker partner, Mark Logan. Chatting exclusively to OK! from the Irish countryside they now call home, Jessica explains why life has changed so dramatically for her…

Jessica! Congratulations on your pregnancy. How have you been?

Thank you! My first trimester was tricky, and I am definitely experiencing nausea, even at 28 weeks, but it’s all teaching me newfound resilience. I feel like I’m gaining strength throughout this pregnancy. It can be hard at times, physically and emotionally, but Mark is so supportive. I don’t know if I could do this without him.

Have you always wanted to have kids?

Article continues below

I always hoped to be a mother. I wouldn’t say we were trying to get pregnant, but we were delighted. Pleasantly surprised. From that moment on, I’ve felt quite high.

Have you had any unusual cravings?

Salt and vinegar crisps are getting me through. And I love Medjool dates, they are heaven on earth. I also make masala chai every morning. It really warms my stomach, and actually soothes the nausea. I’m doing yoga and a bit of Pilates. And our dog, Bloom, gets me outside.

What kind of mum do you hope to be?

I’m very aware that this child is going to be my teacher, I really respect that we learn a lot from children. I’m excited by this feeling of nurture — it’s so strong. I worry less now, too, and I used to be such a worrier. I’d come up with hypothetical worries, make up scenarios in my head, and then get scared. I’ve learned how to self-regulate, and I hope that will help me as a mum.

Jessica and Mark are now based in Ireland(Image: Instagram)

How did you meet Mark? Was there an instant connection?

The second I met Mark, I felt like I remembered him. Like I had met him before, like he was already my best friend. I think I’d been searching for him for quite a long time. We both believe in devotion. So I’ve found love brings you together, but devotion keeps you together. I didn’t see him coming, but I am so glad he’s here.

And how has Mark been throughout your pregnancy so far?

He’s been so supportive and bought me all the salt and vinegar crisps I desire! He’s really cheeky and funny, which has helped me so much. Laughter has helped me and continues to help me. We’re living in Ireland now — initially I was nervous to move to another country, but I find Irish people quite magical, and it just feels right being here.

It’s quite a transformation from your Made In Chelsea days…

You know, I feel very grateful for that period of time because if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t have experienced solitude to the degree I did, and I wouldn’t have looked inside myself as much as I did. I’m really thankful for that time I perceived as difficult, but now I perceive as a gift. I actually don’t recognise myself any more. I’m less ignorant, I am more self-aware, and I have a deeper understanding. I feel much more in my power as a woman than I did then.

Do you keep in touch with any Made In Chelsea cast members?

I speak to Alex Mytton, I think he’s an angel, he’s just fab. And I sometimes speak to Jamie Laing, that’s it. We haven’t spoken since the pregnancy announcement [Jamie and his wife Sophie Habboo recently revealed they are expecting a baby], but I can’t wait to talk to him.

Would you ever do reality TV again?

I wouldn’t say no. If it was in alignment with where I’m at, then yeah, maybe…

How has it been navigating pregnancy at the same time as launching your sculpture collection, Gliffy?

We were really focusing on Gliffy and then I found out I was pregnant, and we were like, “This is actually really beautiful. ” It’s amazing to have these two things that I care about so much come about at the same time. I was slightly nervous about it, because I thought, “Oh, is the timing incorrect? Is this going to get in the way of anything? ” But actually, it’s been the total opposite. I found that they really complement each other, because my collection was kind of about the inner child, and it felt like my baby.

How did your journey into making sculptures start?

I would say I started this journey of self-discovery and self-inquiry in lockdown, because, like a lot of people, I was forced to be alone. I had to figure out what it was that made me happy and made me feel good, and it forced me into solitude.

I found that there was something inside me that was really childlike and playful, and I was suppressing that. I was really lucky to come in contact with an artist, and I was really inspired by the fact that this person was using their imagination to create form in the real world. I was like, “Yeah, I want to try that.” Having to overcome the fear of not knowing what I’m doing and the fear of failure was interesting. That in itself was a journey.

Brooklyn Beckham feels he ‘doesn’t fit into family’ as Harper’s ‘heartbroken’ over rift

As it looks like Brooklyn Beckham will be a no-show for Harper’s 14th birthday this week, a source explains why his loyalties are split between his family and his wife Nicola Peltz

It’s celebration time again in the Beckham household this week, but one particular member of the once tightknit family is expected not to be joining in the fun. Harper, the youngest of David and Victoria’s children, turns 14 on Thursday and a source claimed that, with talk of the family feud escalating further, Brooklyn is expected to be missing from the Beckhams’ festivities once again.

Talk of tensions between Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz with his mum and dad started in 2022 around the time of Brooklyn and Nicola’s wedding – and there are no signs of it ending any time soon. Brooklyn, 26, spent a recent weekend celebrating the birthday of Nicola’s billionaire dad, who she called “most loving father”, just a few weeks after missing his own dad’s star-studded 50th bash at Notting Hill restaurant, Core.

Our source said that while the family fallout is mainly between Brooklyn and his parents, his younger siblings – including birthday girl Harper – have sadly become collateral damage.

“Harper’s been particularly affected by what’s going on because she’s always been really close to Brooklyn,” claimed the source. “They’ve always had a lovely bond because Brooklyn was that bit older when Harper was born and the hope when Brooklyn married Nicola was that she’d become like a big sister to Harper in a house full of brothers.

“But obviously that hasn’t happened and it’s potentially going to be heartbreaking for Harper if Brooklyn doesn’t show up for her on her birthday. ”

As Brooklyn and his model and actress wife celebrated financier Nelson Peltz’s 83rd birthday with Nicola’s family in Bedford, New York, Victoria, 51, and David, 50, were back at home in the UK.

Nicola, 30, later posted a snap to her social media of herself with her dad and Brooklyn, and wrote a gushing tribute to Nelson which said, “I am so lucky to be your daughter, you’re the most loving and supportive father I could ever dream of… Thank you for always being there for us – our constant love and support. ”

If Brooklyn fails to acknowledge his little sister’s birthday in any significant way, it will become the latest in a string of family events that have so far failed to repair the Beckham rift. After missing David’s pre-birthday celebrations in the Cotswolds and Paris, Brooklyn and Nicola were also absent from his star-studded dinner party at the Michelin-starred west London restaurant.

David was joined by some of his closest showbiz pals, including Tom Cruise, Eva Longoria and Guy Ritchie, and was treated to a performance by son Cruz, 20, on his guitar, while Romeo, 22, was tasked with the job of carrying in David’s cake.

Given that Brooklyn also failed to acknowledge his father’s big milestone on any of his social media channels, our source claimed the chances of him “showing up for Harper” are looking pretty slim.

“A teenage birthday is a big deal for any child and in the past they’ve always tried to do things together as a family,” said the source. “Victoria would like nothing more than for Brooklyn to show up to celebrate with them all, but it’s not looking likely at all.

“He took a stand and missed his dad’s 50th so he’s not likely to suddenly do a U-turn and forget everything that’s happened, as much as he loves Harper. But if he did, it could a much-needed olive branch to start repairing things. An end to the family drama would be the best birthday present Harper – and her parents – could ask for. ”

There’s been plenty of family affection flying around on the Beckhams’ social media channels – just none from Brooklyn directed towards his own parents. He appeared to twist the knife further when he posted a birthday tribute to Nelson, after snubbing his own father’s special day.

Last month, Brooklyn also publicly marked the five-year anniversary of his marriage proposal to Nicola, saying it was his “best decision ever”. Our source claimed it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Brooklyn’s loyalties don’t lie with his parents and siblings, but adds that it isn’t surprising given he is now married.

“He didn’t want it to turn out this way and he’s always been really close to all his siblings, but he is a married man now and his priorities have to lie somewhere else,” said the source.

“He just doesn’t feel his family have treated Nicola well and now that he’s grown so close to her family in the States, he doesn’t really feel like he fits into the Beckham family right now. If Harper’s wish is to have her brother at home for her big day, sadly, she’s probably going to be disappointed. ”

Woman spots Gucci bag in charity shop and is floored by price tag

A woman popped into her local charity store and spotted a Gucci bag on display in a glass cabinet alongside some jewellery but was amazed after clocking how much it was being sold for

Charity shops are a firm favourite among fashion lovers looking for designer and sustainable options for less (stock image)(Image: SolStock/Getty Images)

A woman got lucky after spotting a Gucci bag in a charity shop for an absolute steal. Gucci is a prominent, world renowned, luxury design house founded in Italy in 1921. It offers an array of handbags, clothing and accessories, shoes and even home decoration.

Gucci also boasts a fragrance and cosmetics line under the name Gucci Beauty. Typically, the luxury retailer’s bag prices vary. The brand’s Ophidia mini bag, crafted in beige and white GG Supreme canvas, is currently priced at £610 to purchase directly from its website, for example.

On the higher end of the spectrum, its Diana medium tote bag – which comes in six colours and is constructed in leather – is available for £3,170.

Vintage Gucci bags can be especially expensive, particularly if they’re from a limited edition release or rare. On eBay, a limited edition Gucci Crocodile Bag is available from £24,086.72.

Many bargain hunting fashion lovers turn to charity shops on the hunt for stylish clothing and accessories at a fraction of the cost.

Those looking to make more sustainable fashion choices and avoid buying fast fashion similarly visit charity and secondhand shops when looking to pad out their wardrobes.

There’s plenty of options available which allow people to shop for less while supporting a good cause, or simply snap up some much needed bargains while the cost of living continues to rise.

Discount chain store Goodwill boasts more than 150 outlets across the United States and Canada, where it offers bargain hunters “hundreds of thousands of unique items up for grabs at any given time, including art, books, vinyl records, clothing, home décor, jewellery, musical instruments, sports, toys, and more”.

One woman ventured into her local Goodwill store in northern California and was amazed after spotting a Gucci bag for sale.

It wasn’t on the shop floor with the rest of the items, it was alongside the jewellery in a glass display case which led the woman to deduce “it was real”.

There are many fake copies of designer goods often sold as though they’re the real deal. If you’re buying a designer item from a secondhand source, make sure you have it authenticated before splashing the cash.

The woman shared her Gucci find on Facebook with the caption “Gucci crossbody found at Goodwill today”, where she declared the bag to be a genuine Gucci number after the serial number was checked.

It was on offer for just $49. 99 (£36. 82) but as the woman is a “regular” client, they allowed her to have a slight discount and sold it to her for $44. 99 (£33. 13).

Today’s horoscope for July 6 as Cancer is warned to choose their battles wisely

Today’s horoscope for July 6 sees one star sign encourage to leave others with their negativity on their own, while another has been told to try to avoid causing tension

Gemini (May 22 – June 21)

It’s a great day to meet up with people on the same wavelength and to choose activities you enjoy. Think about making it a full-day outing. Whether it’s hiking, spending time at the beach or even running a marathon, choose whatever brings you joy.
