Action icon Tom Cruise has revealed a traditional English breakfast is the key to daredevil antics. The Hollywood legend says he scoffed a dozen eggs a day with his fry up to provide him energy for his death-defying Mission: Impossible stunts.

Actor Tom, 62, is a huge fan of the UK, shooting many of the film’s franchises here, where he also has a home. He was in London at the weekend for good friend David Beckham’s 50th birthday party. And it would seem anglophile Tom has grown accustomed to our cuisine too. Asked how he prepares for the dangerous scenes in upcoming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the Top Gun star confessed: “I actually eat a massive breakfast.

“The amount of energy it takes – I train so hard for that wing-walking. I’ll eat, like, sausage and almost a dozen eggs and bacon and toast and coffee and fluids.

“Oh, I’m eating! Picture: It’s cold up there. We’re at high altitude. My body is burning a lot.”

Tom’s not the first actor to devour multiple eggs as a pre-filming diet. Mark Wahlberg, 53, once admitted to eating 12 eggs a day in order to pile on the pounds for movie Stu. And Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, 53, previously boasted about eating 12 whole eggs and eight egg whites as part of his post-workout meal.

A trailer for his eighth MI film shows Cruise as agent Ethan Hunt risking his life on the wings and body of a 1940s biplane mid-air. Cruise, whose desire to entertain audiences has seen him risk his life in insane stunts for three decades, dreamed of the scenes since he was a kid.

“I remember seeing old footage of wing-walking,” he explained to US magazine People. “Those aircraft were only traveling at, I don’t know, 40, 50 miles an hour. This aircraft is up to over 120 miles an hour. Going out there, I was realising that it takes your breath away.”

Director Christopher McQuarrie, who directed and co-written the last three films, added: “He’s basically a one-man film crew: operating the camera, acting and flying.”

Co-star Simon Pegg said his friend was crazy for putting his life on the line for film stunts so often. The Shaun Of The Dead star said: “I’ve said, ‘You’re absolutely nuts’ many times to him. But he just cares that much about it.”

Tom told how he showed his late mother Mary Lee footage of the stunt before she passed away in 2017 – but didn’t tell her about his plans to recreate it.

Fans will see Cruise say farewell to Ethan Hunt in what he insists is the last ever installment, The Final Reckoning, which comes to UK cinemas on May 23.

Tom confirmed his relationship with actress Ana De Armas, 37, at the weekend when they attended David Beckham’s celeb-packed party at Core by Clare Smyth in Kensington, West London.

Bill Gates says he will give away 99 percent of his wealth by 2045

Tech billionaire Bill Gates has said that he will give away 99 percent of his wealth in the next two decades, funding his philanthropy the Gates Foundation long enough for it to close in 2045.

In a statement published on Thursday, Gates also firmly criticised the way his fellow centibillionaire – Elon Musk, an adviser to US President Donald Trump – is pushing to slash United States funds for essential things like food and medical assistance in poor countries.

“The picture of the world’s richest man killing the world’s poorest children is not a pretty one,” Gates told the Financial Times, referring to Musk’s work with the Trump administration to dismantle the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Gates, who has a current estimated net worth of about $108bn, has long been among the most recognisable figures in the field of philanthropy, with an emphasis on medical assistance in poor countries.

He has also become a symbol of the enormous influence that such wealth can have on everything from politics to global health.

Pandemic vaccine criticism

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gates was a vocal opponent of loosening patent protections around COVID-19 vaccines in order to allow poorer countries to manufacture their own versions and distribute them to their populations more quickly, arguing that doing so would harm innovation and intellectual property rights.

Critics accused him of promoting a vision of “vaccine apartheid”. They have also questioned whether Gates, through his substantial funding of groups such as the vaccine group Gavi and the World Health Organization, wields disproportionate influence in the field of global health without the same oversight and accountability that a public institution would face.

Over the years, Gates has stated that he is determined to give away most of his enormous fortune. While he is currently worth about $108bn, he expects the foundation to spend a total of around $200bn by 2045, depending on inflation and markets.

“People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that ‘he died rich’ will not be one of them,” the 69-year-old co-founder of Microsoft said in a post on his website.

“There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people,” he added.

Gates also lamented that the US has pulled back from involvement in global health and humanitarian assistance around the world, offering a subtle rebuke of the Trump administration.

“It’s unclear whether the world’s richest countries will continue to stand up for its poorest people,” he said.

Kate Middleton’s emotional VE Day tribute as Kensington Palace issues new update

The Prince and Princess of Wales joined the King and Queen for a moving VE Day service at Westminster Abbey today, with Kate paying a touching tribute to those who died in the Second World War as she left the ceremony

The Princess of Wales made a moving gesture at the end of a special service at Westminster Abbey to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Kate and husband, Prince William, had joined the Royal Family, including the King and Queen, for the service of thanksgiving honouring the sacrifices of those who brought peace to Europe 80 years ago.

A national two minutes silence was observed before the simple ceremony, and among the congregation were veterans of the conflict who helped to defeat fascism on the continent during a war that lasted almost six years. At the end of the ceremony, all of the royals, including Kate, spent time with veterans and their families as they made their way out of the Abbey.

The princess, in an Alexandra Rich dress and earrings that belonged to Princess Diana, crouched down to meet one woman, holding her hand as she chatted to the veteran, who was wearing medals and sat in her wheelchair. William was seen warmly placing his hand on one veteran’s shoulder as he chatted to the former serviceman who stood to speak with the prince and Kate.

Then, as is tradition, a young girl presented Kate with a posy of colourful flowers as she made her way out of the building. But in a moving tribute, she left the flowers at the large circular slate Innocent Victims’ Memorial outside the abbey on departure, as did the Queen.

The blooms were picked yesterday within the walls of Windsor Castle and the surrounding estate. They included rosemary for remembrance, oak for endurance and bluebells, which traditionally represent gratitude.

Kate’s gesture comes as it has been revealed that both she and William will now join Charles and Camilla at Horse Guards Parade for a special concert tonight. The VE Day party, presented by Zoe Ball, will feature performances by The Darkness, Toploader, and classical singer Sir Willard White.

The likes of Samantha Barks, Fleur East, John Newman, Calum Scott and a host of other performers are also set to take to the stage, while the professionals of Strictly Come Dancing will also be performing.

Actor Timothy Spall began VE Day commemorations in London on Monday by reading extracts of then Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill’s victory speech to the nation on May 8 1945. Monday also saw a military procession and flypast in central London, as well as a street party held at Downing Street.

Pubs and bars have been granted permission to stay open for longer to mark the anniversary. Venues in England and Wales which usually close at 11pm tonight will be able to keep serving for an extra two hours to celebrate.

Churches and cathedrals across the country will ring their bells as a collective act of thanksgiving at 6.30pm, echoing the sounds that swept across the country in 1945, the Church of England said.

Five talking points from Lions squad announcement

Getty Images

So the first roar of the 2025 Lions has been heard – some old cats who have prowled this terrain before, some cubs who are experiencing this for the first time.

And Henry Pollock, a beast so rare it’s still difficult to find the right word for him.

Big-name casualties, especially at hooker

Some big-name casualties. No Jamie George of England and no Dewi Lake of Wales.

Many folk will have had both of them involved but their places have gone to Ireland’s back-up hooker, Ronan Kelleher, and England’s Luke Cowan-Dickie.

Dan Sheehan was always going to be selected and he’s the very clear frontrunner to start in the first Test.

Hopes will not have been high in Wales, but two Lions is by a distance their lowest-ever total.

There was mention of Blair Murray as a bolter at full-back and more talk of Taulupe Faletau possibly coming in for the desperately unlucky Caelan Doris, who misses out.

Marcus makes it but Farrell circus avoided

Marcus Smith is in at 10 and as cover at 15, with Blair Kinghorn likely to miss the first two or three games because of his commitments with French club Toulouse.

Elliot Daly is another who can deputise as 15. Scotland would have been hoping to get Tom Jordan picked in that utility role but it’s fallen to Daly instead.

There was a world of speculation around the 10s.

A big campaign had formed around Owen Farrell, sparked in part by Johnny Sexton, the Lions assistant coach, who said previously that he would pick him in his Test squad.

Through injury and lack of form in France with Racing, Farrell Jr – son of boss Andy – doesn’t make it. Wonder what Sexton made of that in the selection meeting. His man – out.

Farrell Sr may not have wanted the circus of having his son in the squad and, quite possibly, Owen wouldn’t have wanted to be part of it either. Intrigue there.

Ireland’s Sam Prendergast also had a bandwagon, but the wheels fell off in a disastrous display against Northampton on Saturday.

Back-row power leaves impressive standby list

There’s no getting away from it – the strength in the back row is immense and there were always going to be big names missing out.

Flanker Jack Willis is one of them. He’s been sensational at Toulouse but if Farrell was prepared to wait for Kinghorn, then he hasn’t afforded the same latitude to Englishman Willis.

Mainly because he doesn’t have to. He has more than enough artillery without him. Maybe the dramatic rise and rise of 20-year-old England back rower Pollock put paid to his chances also.

Hansen beats Graham in wing battle

Scotland will be very happy to have eight – one short of their all-time high – but the many fans of winger Darcy Graham will be crestfallen.

The wee man has X-factor and is in flying form. He was strong in the Six Nations, offers real pace and is as brave as a lion, only he’s not a Lion.

That’s an eyebrow-raiser because Ireland’s Hansen hasn’t played since the middle of April and doesn’t have the gas that Graham offers.

Williams wins scrum-half scrap

Ireland’s Jamison Gibson-Park was always a shoo-in and England’s Alex Mitchell was nailed-on to be the second scrum-half.

There was a lot of debate around who the third and final nine would be – Tomos Williams or Scotland’s Ben White? The Welshman has won the race.

England World Cup-winner Matt Dawson went White on a podcast during the week, reckoning that his style of play might best suit what Farrell is looking for. Williams, though, is a terrific player. Smart and dynamic.
