Northern Ireland captain Magill out of play-off

Press Eye

Injured Northern Ireland captain Simone Magill is one of several absentees for the Nations League promotion play-off with Iceland.

There is a return for experienced defender Sarah McFadden, fellow defender Toni-Leigh Finnegan, and forwards Kerry Beattie and Casey Howe.

San Diego-born forward Leyla McFarland, who plays for Durham, has earned a first senior call-up, as has Glentoran midfielder Mia Moore.

Laura Rafferty and Ellie Mason join Magill in missing out through injury, while fellow key defender Rachel Dugdale announced her retirement from football in September.

Burnley midfielder Brenna McPartlan is also missing for the play-offs, while the Irish FA said Glentoran’s Demi Vance and Cliftonville defender Kelsie Burrows “both confirmed they were unavailable” for the play-off.

Tanya Oxtoby’s side secured a shot at reaching League A for the first time by finishing second in their Nations League group behind Poland.

Iceland, on the other hand, were third in a League A group containing France, Norway and bottom side Switzerland.

Losing Magill is a blow to Oxtoby, with the Birmingham City forward picking up a hip injury after a strong start to the WSL2 season.

Magill played a key role in Northern Ireland’s second-place finish in their Nations League group and had scored two goals in as many matches for the Blues this season.

After the retirement of Dugdale, and injuries to Rafferty and Mason, McFadden’s return to the Northern Ireland set-up is timely after a long-term injury and the birth of her second child.

The 38-year-old, who has won 106 caps, will provide valuable experience in a youthful defence for the play-off.

Her Durham team-mate McFarland, 25, has earned a first senior call-up after she represented Northern Ireland on several occasions at youth level.

Midfielder Moore, 18, scored 12 goals as Glentoran won the Women’s Premiership title on the final day against rivals Cliftonville.

Left-back Demi Vance, who was a key part of Northern Ireland’s journey to Euro 2022, had fallen out of favour under Oxtoby and had not featured since September 2024.

In May, Vance had said she was “always be fit, ready and available to play” if recalled by Oxtoby, but the IFA said the 34-year-old, along with Cliftonville captain Burrows, had made themselves “unavailable” for the play-off.

Oxtoby said the youthful make-up of her squad for the Iceland play-off was “exciting”.

“We have a very young group this time around who are all very excited to be part of the set-up,” said the Australian.

“We’ve done a lot of work in the background to make sure they feel ready when they come in.

HFN Fixes Dates, Venues For 2nd Phase Of 2025 Ardova Handball Premier League

The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has confirmed that the second phase of the 2025 Ardova Handball Premier League will take place in Lagos from November 26 to December 6, 2025.

According to a statement signed by the HFN General Secretary, Monica Otumala, on Friday, the top-tier league—proudly sponsored by Ardova PLC—will be staged at two venues: the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Institute of Sports, Surulere, and the Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba.

Teams are expected to arrive in Lagos on Tuesday, November 25, with a crucial Technical Meeting scheduled for the same day. Matches will kick off on Wednesday, November 26, and run through to Saturday, December 6, when the season’s champions will be crowned. Teams will depart on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Otumala urged all participating clubs to begin preparations early and ensure completion of all documentary registrations ahead of the competition.

“The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) is pleased to inform you that the 2nd phase of the 2025 Ardova Handball Premier League will take place from November 25 to December 7, 2025, in Lagos State,” she said.

“Participating teams must make all necessary arrangements to plan their arrival and departure within the stated period, and all documentary registrations of players must be completed on or before November 10, 2025,” Otumala added.

The Safety Shooters and Safety Babes, both owned by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), currently lead the men’s and women’s divisions respectively after the first phase of the league, which was held in Benin City, Edo State, in July.

In the men’s category, Safety Shooters sit atop the table with 28 points and a +97 goal difference, narrowly ahead of COAS Shooters, who also have 28 points but a lesser +50 goal difference. Rima Strikers of Sokoto occupy third place with 25 points, while defending champions Tojemarine Handball Club follow in fourth with 24 points.

Yamal Set To Return As Wounded Barca Start Clasico Countdown

Hansi Flick’s side were hammered 4-1 by Sevilla before the international break and must regroup before facing Real Madrid on October 26.

Midfielder Pedri Gonzalez said Barca’s performance in Seville was the team’s worst under Flick, and since then Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo have suffered injuries to deepen their plight.

However Yamal and Fermin Lopez returned to training this week and are expected to be fit to face Girona, while Raphinha is also nearing a return.

Teenage star Yamal missed the thrashing by Sevilla and then Spain’s World Cup qualifiers with the recurrence of a groin problem, but should feature against Girona in a derby clash.

Yamal’s expected return is a welcome boost for Barca ahead of a busy period, with a Champions League match against Olympiacos following on Tuesday ahead of the Clasico.

Joan Garcia, Gavi and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are longer-term absentees and Flick’s options remain thin, without much room for rotation.

The coach was careful not to further reduce the morale of his players after their collapse at Sevilla.

“It’s one match and we lost it, and we have to keep going on,” said the coach, praising his team’s second half display after an especially poor first period.

It was Barcelona’s first defeat of the season, leaving them two points behind leaders Real Madrid, but not their first bad performance.

Barca drew 1-1 at Rayo Vallecano in August, after which Flick blasted the team and suggested they had got too big for their boots after winning a domestic treble last season.

“Ego kills success,” warned the German coach, hoping to refocus his players’ minds.

It seemed to work as even without teenage star Yamal, they secured several wins, but then after he got hurt again against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, came their heavy defeat at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

Barca started last season superbly but then collapsed in November and December, allowing Atletico Madrid to overtake them at the top of the table.

Flick will be keen for his team to avoid a similar backslide this season, and hosting Girona, 18th in a derby, is a good opportunity for his team to get back to winning ways.

The game will take place at the Olympic stadium on the city’s Montjuic hill, with Barca’s rebuilt Camp Nou home not yet ready to open amid a series of delays.

“I’m really looking forward to going back to Camp Nou, with all our fans,” said midfielder Frenkie de Jong, after renewing his contract until 2029 on Wednesday.

“I don’t know the date, but we can’t wait.”

Real Madrid face Getafe on Sunday, hoping in-form striker Kylian Mbappe has recovered from an ankle problem.

Villarreal, third, host Real Betis while Atletico Madrid welcome Osasuna.

Player to watch: Luis Milla

Getafe midfielder Milla has been his team’s key weapon this season, providing five assists — no player in the top flight has more. The Madrid minnows host rivals Los Blancos in a derby clash and if they are to take anything from the game Milla will likely have to play an important role.

Teachers say there’s one gift they don’t want to receive for Christmas—and it’s not stationery

With Christmas fast approaching, parents looking to gift school staff a festive gift at the end of the Winter term should know that there’s one gift teachers like the least

Schools across the UK will break up for Christmas sooner than you think, as we’re already drawing closer to the last half-term break before the festive season. But the holidays aren’t just time off for students; they give teachers a much-needed break.

Whilst it’s not compulsory, many parents opt to give their child’s teacher a small festive gift as a gesture of gratitude. However, selecting something appropriate for someone who isn’t a mate or relative can prove challenging.

From homemade cards and chocolates to candles and even Stanley Cups, teachers often find themselves heading home with a car boot crammed with presents.

Of course, an affordable and simple option that can be just as meaningful as a gift and personalised to be as unique as you’d like is a touching thank you card, but if you’re looking for suggestions of something more material to bestow before the festive period, we’ve listed six that are sure to be a hit.

Is there something you shouldn’t buy? According to our Editorial Director’s teacher sister, while they massively appreciate any gifts from their students and their families, there is one thing you may want to avoid gifting teachers – chocolate, because apparently they get given so much of it.

Meanwhile, The Mirror reported that one teacher has warned parents against getting certain gifts for school staff, as receiving the same present from 30 kids in the class can end up being quite repetitive.

Lucinda Chambers, a seasoned teacher with over 15 years of experience, shared her insights with Mamma Mia, suggesting that a simple thank you is often enough. But for those who wish to give something more, Lucinda offered some advice on what to avoid.

One thing she advises against is gifting mugs, as teachers tend to receive them far too often. Instead, she suggests considering a reusable drinks bottle or coffee cup as a thoughtful alternative.

Additionally, Lucinda warns that lotions and other skincare products aren’t typically favoured by teachers. She explained: “A beautifully scented hand cream or shower gel is a lovely thought, but what ‘smells good’ is highly personal, not to mention that some teachers may have highly sensitive skin.”

And finally, although it might seem like a classic gift, she concurs that many teachers prefer not to receive chocolate or sweets as presents. As surprising as that might sound, some teachers simply aren’t keen on these treats and some are gifted them so often they don’t get through them.

Some top recommendations for gifts include:

  • Reusable water bottles – e.g. Stanley Quencher or similar alternative
  • Scented candle – maybe lavender or other stress-relieving scents
  • Personalised stationary
  • Wine, beer or other favourite beverages
  • Festive hamper – M&S has a wide range of sweet and savoury hampers
  • Something homemade – from a handmade card or homemade treats

Harry Potter’s Emma Watson’s mystery man revealed as millionaire tech tycoon

Emma Watson is best known for finding fame playing the role of Hermione Granger in the iconic Harry Potter film franchise

Harry Potter’s Emma Watson’s mystery man has finally been revealed as a millionaire tech tycoon.

The pair have been spotted together as they enjoy the Italian sunshine in Pisa as we enter autumn. Emma dressed in leggings with a jumper tied around her waist as she enjoyed a day out with her rumoured new partner to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The mystery man is said to be Camila Cabello’s ex-boyfriend who is known as Austin Kevitch. He certainly won’t be intimidated by Emma’s fortune has he quite the net worth himself. Austin works as a relationship guru as he is the CEO of the dating app Lox Club.

The Daily Mail reported that Emma’s trip with her new man comes soon after it was thought that she might announce that she was engaged to her long-term boyfriend Kieran Brown.

Meanwhile, Emma’s rumoured new beau Austin used to date Camila for eight months, with the pair being together in early 2023.

In a turn of events, Austin and Emma’s reported ex Kieran both went to the University of Cape Town in South Africa back in 2013, but it is not known if they were friends. Emma and Kieran are said to have split up earlier this year after she met him studying part time for a masters degree at Oxford University.

It is unknown if the new couple met through Austin’s dating app or not. Lox has a membership committee that carefully examines each application and limits the number of swipes a user can make to between six and 12 in each eight hour period so as to help people make “real connections”.

Just earlier this month, fans thought Emma could be engaged to her ex-boyfriend as she was seen wearing a vintage-style diamond ring on her wedding finger at Paris Fashion Week. She was first linked with Kieran a year ago when they were spotted kissing in Oxford.

This is where Emma is studying for her creative writing degree and he is an economics and literature lecturer. However, the actress spoke on The Jay Shetty Podcast where she confirmed she wasn’t engaged and added she would not be pressured into tying the knot as it’s seen as the conventional thing to do.

Speaking about the ring she said: “I did a ritual with, I guess just a day of celebrating with my friends and chosen family. They each bought me this ring, which has 22 petals on it, and each of them bought one.”

She added: “I’ve just never owned anything so valuable in my life because to me it represents the life that I’ve built, which was the one that I really wanted, which was one that was made up of community and my roots and faith and trust. I’m just so happy not to be divorced yet. That sounds like a really negative answer, but I think that we’re being pressured and forced into this thing that I believe is a miracle.”

Emma has been open about her feminist views over the years as well as her support of trans rights. She also mentioned in the interview that her public support for trans rights did not mean she had turned against Harry Potter author JK Rowling who has spoken out about trans people in the past.

Five things to watch in EFL – managerial musings and basement battles

In case you wanted to mark it on your calendar, there is only one more international break until Christmas.

After a second interruption, the Championship returns this weekend and there is a full programme in League One and League Two.

We have the Gary Rowett and Liam Manning ‘derbies’ to look forward to in the Championship along with a fixture which has been going for more than 130 years.

Manning’s Norwich nightmare

Norwich's Josh Sargent with his hands on his head and a grimacing Jovon MakamaGetty Images

Local lad made good, comes back to take his throne.

That’s how Liam Manning’s appointment at Carrow Road was billed in June when he became the first Norwich-born boss of the Canaries.

Four months down the road, the crown is looking a little battered and the subjects are becoming restless.

If overseeing the first time in Norwich’s history that they have lost their opening four home league games was not bad enough, becoming the first Canaries head coach to suffer defeat by East Anglian rivals Ipswich in 16 years might have the camel’s back straining under the weight of the straw.

“If we win games, the relationship with the fans is recoverable,” Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk.

“I had it early on at Bristol. Rightly, the fans are on us, we have to accept it, but the only way to change it is by delivering, and that’s what I’m focusing on.”

So, this might not be the best time for his former club, Bristol City, the ones he guided to the play-offs last season, to come rolling into view.

The Robins were enjoying life under new boss Gerhard Struber but a four-match winless run has somewhat put the brakes on.

Rowett’s past and present facing similar challenges

Oxford boss Gary Rowett wearing an Oxford United baseball capRex Features

When Oxford boss Gary Rowett and Derby’s John Eustace meet up on Saturday they can compare very similar notes.

No home wins, one away victory apiece and only two points apart.

Unlike Eustace, however, Rowett has seen the upside as a Derby manager, having guided them to the play-offs in 2018 and the Rams faithful were hoping after avoiding the drop last season this year might offer something a bit more positive.

Three successive draws in which they have had to come from behind may be the green shoots they are looking for.

“You can see the group is growing, the bench is getting stronger so we just keep going,” Eustace told BBC Radio Derby.

A game for the ages

West Brom and Preston contesting the 1954 FA Cup finalGetty Images

Whenever West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End meet there is quite a lot to unpack.

This is, after all, a fixture which goes back to the very first EFL season in 1888-89 with two FA Cup meetings in the years preceding, including a final which is one of two won by the Baggies against the Lancastrians.

Oh, it’s also seventh against fourth if we wind forward to the present day.

For the record, this will be the 123rd time these two have met with Albion holding the advantage, 53 victories to Preston’s 41, but Paul Heckingbottom’s side will rock up to The Hawthorns as the Championship’s surprise package so far.

A final-day relegation scrap last term hardly had Deepdale fans skipping into this campaign, even less so when last season’s second-top scorer Emil Riis left for Bristol City and the squad was overhauled.

But, here they are in fourth place, beaten only once and with notable wins over Leicester and Ipswich.

“I’m pleased with our levels of performance – we’re hitting levels of consistency and no matter who’s put in front of us we can give them a game,” said Heckingbottom.

The Preston boss has been there and done it but in the opposite technical area will be Ryan Mason, a man still relatively new to the management lark and possibly facing his first real test.

An unbeaten start with 10 points from his opening four games has been followed by four points from the subsequent five, culminating in a 3-0 loss at Millwall.

Wilshere seeks to lead Hatters in the right direction

Dejected looking Luton players after relegation from the Championship is confirmedRex Features

Rookie boss Jack Wilshere has been handed the keys at Luton Town to try to get a club stuck in reverse motoring once again.

The memories of a warm afternoon at Wembley and promotion to the Premier League have dimmed following successive relegations and a second managerial change in the space of nine months.

Wilshere’s senior coaching career consists of six months as first-team coach at Norwich City and two games as caretaker – hardly a record to read much into but, with experienced assistant Chris Powell, not a gamble according to Luton chairman Gary Sweet.

“The model is the one we feel is right – where we have energy, enthusiasm, different ideas, nimbleness, boldness, bravery – but stabilised by Chris, who will give a tap on the shoulder and a little bit of advice here and there,” Sweet said.

Down among the muck and nettles

Cheltenham boss Steve Cotterill coaching from the sidelinesGetty Images

First, the bad news for Newport County and Cheltenham Town as they prepare to meet in Saturday’s League Two basement battle.

For the past two seasons, the sides occupying the relegation places after 12 games have gone down.

Now, the good news.

The Exiles and the Robins still have 34 matches to prevent making it a hat-trick.

Newport fans have seen worse, let’s not forget they ceased to exist in 1989 before reforming and fighting their way back from the Hellenic League to rejoin the EFL in 2013.

Under first-time head coach David Hughes, they had taken just one point from 27 before last weekend’s timely 1-0 victory at Accrington stopped the rot but they are yet to win at home.

Mind you, Cheltenham have not won away – but, under the returning Steve Cotterill, they have managed a win and a draw from his two games in charge.

Records are always there to be broken but the losers at the weekend may already start to feel the trapdoor to non-league football creaking open.
