De Bruyne Departs, Rodri Returns As Man City Close In On Champions League

Manchester City gave Kevin De Bruyne a fond farewell in a vital 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday to boost their chances of Champions League football next season.

Goals from Omar Marmoush, Bernardo Silva and Nico Gonzalez lifted City up into third heading into Sunday’s final round of matches.

Mateo Kovacic’s red card 20 minutes from time could have given Bournemouth hope, but Lewis Cook was also sent off just minutes later for a lunge on Gonzalez.

There was further cause for celebration for City late on when Ballon d’Or winner Rodri made his first appearance since September as a substitute after suffering a serious knee injury.

City’s victory means a point when they travel to Fulham on the final day will be enough to secure a top-five finish thanks to their much superior goal difference compared to sixth-placed Aston Villa.

Just three days on from the disappointment of losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace, City had to raise themselves on an emotional night at the Etihad in De Bruyne’s final home match.

Earlier in the day City had unveiled a mosaic and named a road at the club’s training ground after the Belgian.

De Bruyne, who won six Premier League titles and the Champions League during his decade in Manchester, was greeted by a huge banner reading “King Kev” as he led the teams out.

 Marmoush makes amends

Marmoush saw a penalty saved in City’s defeat at Wembley on Saturday which ensured they will end the season without a major trophy for the first time since Pep Guardiola’s debut season in 2016/17.

Missing out on the Champions League would arguably be an even bigger blow for a club who have not failed to qualify for Europe’s elite competition in 14 years.

Marmoush made amends for his Wembley woe in stunning fashion when he crashed home a long-range effort off the inside of the post on 14 minutes.

The moment an expectant crowd had been waiting for looked set to appear moments later when Marmoush squared to give his captain an open goal.

Yet, De Bruyne could only spoon the ball onto the crossbar from point-blank range much to his own disgust.

That miss could have had more damaging consequences for City had Evanilson found the net rather than hitting the post with a great chance to level for Bournemouth.

Instead, Guardiola’s men doubled their advantage before the break.

Ilkay Gundogan’s clever reverse pass found Silva, who slammed home at the near post to spark jubilant celebrations from an animated Guardiola.

The City boss was furious when a slack pass from Josko Gvardiol played in Evanilson and he was brought down by Kovacic, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The red card hastened De Bruyne’s goodbye as he was replaced by Gonzalez to a standing ovation.

But the numbers were evened up just six minutes later as Cook caught Gonzalez on the shin with his studs.

The cheer for Rodri’s return came close to matching De Bruyne’s departure.

The loss of the Spanish midfielder has played a huge part in City’s decline this season.

Gonzalez was bought in January to mitigate Rodri’s absence but has struggled to hold down a place in Guardiola’s side.

The Spaniard curled in his first Premier League goal with a fine finish on 89 minutes before Daniel Jebbison pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time.

Defeat ends Bournemouth’s challenge to qualify for Europe for the first time as they remain down in 11th and now cannot catch eighth-placed Brighton.

Palace shrugged off the hangover after celebrating their first ever major trophy to beat Wolves 4-2 at Selhurst Park.

Eddie Nketiah made the most of a rare chance to start with a double, while cup final hero Eberechi Eze was also among the scorers.

Join South-East Leaders To Work With Tinubu, Umahi Tells Peter Obi

The Labour Party’s candidate for president in the South-East, Peter Obi, has been invited to join governors of the South-East to work with President Bola Tinubu, according to Works Minister Dave Umahi.

In a feature-review of a upcoming State House documentary about President Tinubu’s second anniversary, he made the call.

Despite their political affiliations, Umahi claimed that the regional governors backed the President.

Under President Tinubu, the region is experiencing a new wave of federal attention and infrastructure development, according to the minister.

Leadership is not about the individual; it is about the group. Support someone else if they are already pursuing your ideals. His Excellency Peter Obi, my brother, and I are requesting that they work together. According to a statement from the president’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, he stated, according to a statement from him.

He must attend this summit to support President Tinubu’s 2027 election campaign. The South East is content with the President, he declared boldly.

Umahi emphasized that leaders must work together to advance the country’s common good for the sake of the country.

The minister also made it known that Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be toll-free beginning in December, marking a significant milestone in one of the country’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

He emphasized that the area is experiencing a brand-new era of infrastructure development under Tinubu, with major projects under construction like the Port Harcourt-Enugu and Enugu-Onitsha corridors.

The South-East did not have a federal presence before. However, we are seeing actual projects right now. The President’s commitment to ensuring fairness in all sectors is demonstrated by the Second Niger Bridge alone, he added.

Umahi claimed that Section 1, which extends 47 kilometers, covers over 80% of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. The completion of 47 kilometers of the Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Junction is.

He noted that the project’s 10-year project would begin tolling in December.

Uganda confirms military trials for civilians despite Supreme Court ruling

Opposition figures and human rights organizations criticize the government for trying to silence its opponents, which the government denies. The controversial bill that Uganda’s parliament approved allows military tribunals for civilians has drawn condemnation from the country’s parliament.

The country’s top court rejected the practice in January, but it has since been practiced there for a while. The Supreme Court had determined that military tribunals lacked the legal authority to judec civilians and lacked fair trial standards.

The legislation, which allows civilians to be tried in military courts, was passed on Tuesday by lawmakers in spite of that ruling.

You showed today that you are fearless Americans! In a post on X, President Yoweri Museveni, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the head of the military and his son, said, “Uganda will remember your courage and commitment.”

After the party claimed the opposition activist had been abducted, Kainerugaba earlier this month claimed to be holding a missing opposition activist in his basement and threatened to use violence against him.

In response to concerns about alleged threats to state stability and armed opposition, Museveni’s government has frequently defended military trials as necessary for national security.

According to a spokesman for the military, the legislation will “defend decisively against armed violent criminals, deter the formation of militant political groups that seek to subvert democratic processes, and ensure national security is firmly founded,” according to Chris Magezi, a spokesman for the military.

However, critics claim that this action is a result of broader repression. During the debate on the bill, opposition MP Jonathan Odur told parliament, “There is no legal basis for the trial of civilians in the military court.” He called the legislation “shallow, unreasonable, and unconstitutional.”

Uganda has used military courts for years to prosecute opposition figures and critics of the government.

Bobi Wine, a popular politician who now leads the opposition, was accused of illegally possessing firearms in a military court in 2018. Later, the charges were dropped.

Former opposition figure Kizza Besigye, who has contested Museveni in numerous elections, was detained in Kenya last year and later returned to Uganda to face a military tribunal.

His trial was moved to a civilian court after the Supreme Court’s ruling in January. The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), his party, has refuted the accusations as politically motivated.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has previously criticized Uganda’s military courts for breaking international standards for judicial independence and fairness.

The Ugandan government has repeatedly used military courts to punish opponents and critics, according to Oryem Nyeko, senior Africa researcher at HRW, earlier this year.

George Wendt – who was best known for his role as Norm Peterson in the iconic sitcom Cheers – has died at the age of 76, his family has confirmed

Actor George Wendt, famed for his role as Norm Peterson in Cheers, has sadly passed away at the age of 76. The sitcom legend, who was the uncle of Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis, died peacefully in his sleep at his home earlier today.

George sparked health concerns earlier this year as he was pictured during a rare outing after keeping a low profile for several months. The actor was spotted on Wednesday, Jan. 29, stepping out of a car with his wife, Bernadette Birkett. He was dressed in a red and green flannel shirt, black shorts and white New Balance trainers.

As George exited the vehicle, he used a cane for support and also held onto part of the car. He was also photographed sitting in a wheelchair, donning a face mask, while Bernadette pushed him around. She was dressed in all black with a plaid scarf.

The couple shared a tender moment as they were seen holding hands. The specifics of George’s health issues remained private, but it was known that the late actor had a health scare in 2012. He was hospitalised with chest pains and was due to perform in a local production in Chicago when it was later reported that he had undergone coronary bypass surgery after doctors discovered a constricted artery.

George is survived by his wife Bernadette Birkett and their three children: Hilary, Joe, and Daniel.
