Explosion at mosque in Indonesia’s Jakarta injures more than 50, police say

Dozens of people have been rushed to hospital after an explosion at a mosque in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, local police said.

The incident happened during Friday prayers inside a school complex in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

City police chief Asep Edi Suheri said the cause of the explosion is still being investigated. Witnesses reported hearing two loud blasts around midday (04:00 GMT), just as the sermon had started at the mosque.

Fifty-four people, mostly students, have been admitted to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious and including burns, Suheri said. Twenty remain in hospital care, with three suffering from serious injuries, he added.

Suheri said an anti-bomb squad that was deployed at the scene found toy rifles and a toy gun near to the mosque.

“Police are still investigating the scene to determine the cause of the blasts,” he explained.

Rugby should relish animosity and aggression in soft society – Genge

Quilter Nations Series: England v Fiji

Venue: Allianz Stadium, Twickenham Date: Saturday, 8 November Kick-off: 17:40 GMT

England prop Ellis Genge says rugby’s confrontations and physicality are a key to its appeal now “society has gone quite soft”.

Genge, who will be England’s starting captain against Fiji on Saturday, was at the centre of an injury-time tussle that drew in most of the two teams in last weekend’s win over Australia.

“It was just a bit of a squabbling. We can’t whack anyone anymore. So, yeah, just a bit of argy-bargy,” he told Rugby Union Weekly.

“I enjoy the animosity of rugby. I enjoy that we’re an abrasive sport.

“I think we should relish it as opposed to shy away from it.

“Society nowadays probably enjoys coming to watch us play because I feel that society’s gone quite soft if I’m being honest.”

The view of Genge, who has played with images of legendary heavyweight boxers Mike Tyson and Muhammed Ali painted on his boots in the past, chimes with others in English rugby.

Genge says he finds one of the hardest things about modern rugby is the demands that it makes on his family life.

After spending six weeks on tour with the British and Irish Lions over the summer, the 30-year-old father of three had mixed feelings about returning to the England camp for the autumn internationals.

“It’s been good, but I’d be lying to you if I said I haven’t struggled,” he said.

“It’s quite daunting really. I don’t like leaving them [family] at home anymore.

“I said to Joe Marler [former England prop who retired from international rugby at the age of 28 to spend more time with his family before returning to the Test scene] the other day, ‘I actually understand why you packed it in a few times, because it’s difficult, packing up and leaving, packing up and leaving’.

“It’s been tough, but in the same breath, I always say to my missus, if I’m here, I’m all in. You’ve got to be unapologetically committed to the situation.”

With usual captain Maro Itoje on the bench, the meeting with Fiji will mark Genge’s third time leading England.

“Yeah, record-breaker,” Genge joked when his games as captain were brought up.

“I think the team grew, not that we did it on purpose. But the moments that we had in those horrible times, like the defeat by France at Twickenham, actually was a bit of a leapfrog for us.”

Genge, whose teamtalks were a feature of the behind-the-scenes footage from the Lions tour, says he focuses on motivating his team-mates through both words and action.

“I’m not much of a tactician. I appreciate that side of the game, but you wouldn’t ask monkeys to swim and fish to climb trees,” he said.

“So I’m not going to sit there with a whiteboard and tell everyone how to play the game. I’m good at the emotional and the physical side of the game. So I’ll stick to that.”

England coach Steve Borthwick says there are few better in that regard.

“Ellis has an unbelievable ability to give a message worth a thousand words with just a facial expression or with a look,” said Borthwick.

Caroline Flack’s final voicenotes and texts seen for first time in heartbreaking scenes

Caroline Flack heartbreakingly admitted that she ‘couldn’t see any way out’ before she took her own life, according to final voice notes and text messages that have now come to light

Caroline Flack said she ‘couldn’t see any way out’ in heartbreaking texts and voicenotes sent before her death.

The former Love Island presenter took her own life in February 2020 at the age of 40 as she was awaiting trial for the alleged assault of her boyfriend.

A coroner determined that her mental health had worsened following her arrest, with an inquest hearing that the presenter had been “hounded” by sections of the media. Now the star’s desperate final messages have been shared – with the permission of her family – in a brand new documentary.

The TV presenter’s mother Christine retraces her daughter’s steps before her tragic death as part of new Disney+ documentary Caroline Flack: The Search for the Truth. In the trailer, Caroline can be heard saying: “I’m just really going all over the place, my head doesn’t know what to think at any point.”

Mum Christine says the phone messages Caroline left behind tell the ‘real story.’ A new trailer for the documentary shows a message sent by the late Love Island presenter which reads: “I feel the lowest I’ve ever felt, I don’t see any way out of this.”

Revealing why she has decided to share the untold side of her daughter’s story, Christine admits: “I’ve got nothing to lose. The worst thing in the world has happened. My daughter has died. As a parent, we think our children are always gonna be there. I want justice for my daughter.”

And in the very last moment of the documentary trailer, the former Strictly Come Dancing star is heard saying: “I think I should make a documentary about all this! What do you think?” as she reflects on the trauma of her looming court case. Caroline was also replaced on her Love Island hosting job as she waited for her court trial.

Caroline was accused of assaulting her boyfriend, Lewis Burton following a row at her flat.

In 2023, the Metropolitan Police apologised to Flack’s family for not keeping a record about why they charged her with assault.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had recommended the former Love Island presenter receive a caution following an incident with her boyfriend but this was overturned after an appeal from the Met Police who instead charged her with assault by beating.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said the force was ordered to apologise to Flack’s family following a review by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which found there was not a “record of rationale” to appeal against the CPS decision.

Split into two parts, Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth will see mum Christine revisit the events that occurred prior to Caroline taking her own life in 2020. Both episodes will be released on the streaming platform on November 10.

Ahead of the release date, Disney+ shared an emotional scene from the documentary in which Christine visits her daughter’s grave with family as they discuss her mission to expose those who contributed to her daughter’s spiralling mental health. She later addresses the camera directly, saying: “I think Caroline would be pleased with what I’m doing. I wish I’d done it then, before she took her own life – and that’s my biggest regret, that I wasn’t shouting like this, then.”

She continues: “But now, I’ve got nothing to lose. The worst thing in the world happened with losing Carrie.”

A synopsis for the upcoming Disney+ documentary states: “After her arrest in 2019, she became the target of a relentless media storm. Vilified in the press and online, her world spiralled – ending in tragedy when she took her own life.

“This powerful two-part Disney+ documentary follows Caroline’s mother, Christine, as she investigates the truth about her daughter’s final months – uncovering new shocking details, asking difficult questions, and exposing the misrepresentations, pressures, and failures from institutions and decision makers that shaped Caroline’s final days.”

Hundreds of protesters descended on Birmingham to demonstrate at the controversial Aston Villa match against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Eleven arrests were made amid a huge police operation, with more than 700 officers deployed for the Europa League game.

A large number of pro-Palestinian supporters waved banners and flags outside Villa Park, while a smaller group of pro-Israeli campaigners marched towards the ground in the wake of the decision to ban away fans.

“We police football matches a lot. We police protests a lot. We deal with all sorts of public order scenarios, but certainly the level of interest, the level of concern around this match is pretty unprecedented.”

Among those arrested were five people on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences.

A man aged 34 and another, 29, were held in connection with abuse shouted towards pro-Israel demonstrators, while a man aged 32 was detained over abuse shouted towards a pro-Palestine group, police said.

In addition, racist abuse during a road rage incident near the stadium saw a 63-year-old man detained, and racist abuse of a police officer led to the arrest of a man, 67.

There were also arrests on suspicion of drugs and breach of peace offences, and a boy, 17, police said, was held for failing to comply with a dispersal order. They added a 21-year-old man was held for failing to comply with an order to remove a face mask.

One man, 21, was arrested after allegedly trying to throw fireworks into the ground.

A counter-protest by pro-Israeli campaigners marched down a road outside Villa Park. Five flatbed vehicles were also driven past the ground prior to kick-off, carrying electronic billboards showing messages opposing antisemitism.

On Thursday, numbers of officers from the West Midlands force were boosted by police from 10 forces across the country.

Ch Supt Joyce, Birmingham’s police commander, said police had prepared for the possibility of people turning up looking for a fight.

He told Sky News that “significant levels of hooliganism” among the Maccabi fan base was the reason for the ban.

Villa supporter Adam Selway turned up for the match wearing a half-and-half scarf in the colours of the home side and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The 48-year-old said he felt sympathy with fans unable to attend and simply wanted to watch a football match, but that he was not making any political statement.

Earlier, those living and working in the city near Villa Park saw shops and schools close early.

Jewish Villa fan Elliot Ludvig described his apprehension about attending the match.

Mr Ludvig, who was going to the game with his son, told the BBC: “I’m apprehensive about what’s going to happen. I’m apprehensive about the potential for violence for one thing.

‘Football unites us’

He said his other major emotion was “disappointment”.

“Is it worth going to a football game to potentially put myself at some sort of risk and or expose my son to to all sorts of unpleasantries which you might not want to?,” he asked.

Elliot Ludvig sits at home with a bookcase and pictures behind him. He is wearing a light blue shirt and his Villa fan shirt is next to him on a chair. He is looking at the camera with a concerned expression.

On Wednesday night, the chief executive of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Jack Angelides, said it was “incredibly sad” his side’s fans could not be there, adding: “Politics should never be drawn into football.”

As plans for protests were drawn up earlier in the week, Naeem Malik, chair of West Midlands Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said there had been national outrage over the hosting of the Israeli team.

Reuters Protesters hold signs outside the stadium before the match. They have Palestinian flags. Two signs say Reuters

Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War Coalition, Muslim Association of Britain, Friends of Al-Aqsa, Kashmir solidarity campaign and Palestinian Forum in Britain had called for the match to be cancelled and jointly organised one of the protests.

Independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, Ayoub Khan, was among the most vocal opponents of the game taking place and attended a demonstration outside Villa Park, leading a chant of Free, Free Palestine.

“We have a very diverse community here, we have children here, families that have come out to support the plight of the Palestinians,” he said.

“We have shown that we are a welcoming community, that we want to support footballers but we don’t support hooligans, and we don’t support genocide.”

In September, a UN commission of inquiry said Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza with reasonable grounds to conclude four out of five genocidal acts had been carried out.

Alan Carr’s bombshell statement as he finally responds to Paloma Faith’s baby news

The first series of Celebrity Traitors came to an end last night which saw iconic chat show host Alan Carr crowned the winner after a series of dramatic events

Alan Carr has released a baffling comment as he finally responds to Paloma Faith’s baby news after his Celebrity Traitors win. The chat show host was given the crown of the first ever celebrity series in last night’s episode.

The star managed to use deception to convince his fellow players that he wasn’t a Traitor, meaning that he was awarded all of the money to give to his chosen charity.

He has now finally addressed the news that his friend and fellow Celebrity Traitors star Paloma Faith is expecting her third child. In typical Alan fashion, he approached the exciting news with humour.

When Paloma initially revealed that she was expecting, Alan didn’t comment despite the pair being good friends. But now he has replied by joking that he is the father of the unborn child.

Alan appeared on Traitors spin-off show Traitors Uncloaked when he made the joke. Turning to Paloma, he said: “I am so sorry, you know I am. I want to tell everyone that I am the father of her child. We had a make up hug and one thing lead to another.”

The friends have been joking that they had fallen out due to the BBC show. Paloma was the first person to leave the show and it was all down to Alan.

The Traitors were given the task to “murder” someone in plain sight and unfortunately Paloma was the victim. Soon after, the singer had joked that she and Alan were no longer friends but it seems they have now made up.

Paloma went public with her boyfriend Stevie Thomas in March this year, having welcomed two daughters with ex-husband Leyman Lahcine.

Paloma previously welcomed her daughter in December 2016 and another baby girl in February 2021. She has been honest about her devastating fertility struggles over the years, having conceived both her children through IVF.

The Only Love Can Hurt Like This hitmaker had six rounds of IVF as she suffered an ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage.

Paloma had a traumatic labour with her first child as she needed to have an emergency C-section. She was left with fertility problems and post-partum psychosis.

Paloma opened up on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast: “After 21 hours in labour and no sleep for a week. I had 7 hours of sleep in 7 days…

“I had an emergency cesarean which later on caused me fertility problems as well, and then a bit of post-partum psychosis because of lack of sleep so I was, like, hallucinating. Probably depressed for a couple of years without realising…”

She added: “Later I wanted a second child and then I had 3 failed transfers. The fourth one worked and I was just so, kind of, headstrong about it.”
