ICC Women’s World Cup, Colombo

England 133-9 (31 overs): Dean 33 (51); Fatima 4-27

Pakistan 34-0 (6.4 overs): Omaima 19* (18)

No result

England avoided a shock defeat by Pakistan at the Women’s World Cup, being saved by heavy rain in Colombo.

An inspired bowling performance from Pakistan saw England slump to 79-7 after 25 overs before the first heavy downpour began.

After a lengthy delay, the rain eased and play resumed at 31 overs per side, with England posting 133-9 after a useful stand of 47 between Charlie Dean, who top-scored with 33, and Em Arlott.

Pakistan were set a revised target of 113 and made a promising start by reaching 34-0 before the rain resumed and denied them a historic victory, which would have been their first one-day international win over England.

It was a fortunate escape for England who suffered their second batting scare of the tournament, after they recovered from 78-5 to beat Bangladesh, and a big wake-up call before their toughest challenges against India and Australia which come next.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s side were outplayed by Pakistan, who are winless in the tournament so far, as five wickets fell in the powerplay, including another failure for the opening partnership. Tammy Beaumont was the first to fall, bowled after leaving a superb delivery from Diana Baig which nipped back sharply.

Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana then starred with three wickets, bowling Amy Jones for eight, before claiming the two vital scalps of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight, bowled and lbw for four and 18 respectively.

Without their two most experienced players, England were exposed and caught between attack and defence.

Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey were lbw sweeping and Emma Lamb’s struggles at number six continued as she was bowled by spinner Sadia Iqbal for four.

Capsey and Charlie Dean withstood Pakistan’s array of spinners for 70 balls but only added 21 runs before the pressure told on the former, but Dean was proactive once play resumed by adding valuable runs with Arlott.

Pakistan openers Omaima Sohail and Muneeba Ali were confident at the beginning of their reply and England were sloppy with the ball, but it is another heartbreak for them having reduced defending champions Australia to 76-7 before that game also slipped from their grasp.

England now travel to Indore to face India and Australia before they conclude the group stage against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam, where flatter pitches are expected at both venues.

‘We weren’t good enough today’ – what they said

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt: “Pakistan bowled brilliantly. Diana Baig and Fatima Sana made it really hard for us to get into the game at all.

“Em Arlott and Charlie Dean then batted really well to give us a chance but we weren’t good enough today and we will hold our hands up. The conditions had also changed a lot by the time the ball was in our hands.

“Adapting as quickly as possible was important. The wicket was seaming a lot so we needed to put in plans to nullify that threat. Picking up wickets as well stopped us getting a partnership at all.”

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana: “Obviously today showed we can beat them but it was not in our favour.

‘Mercedes deals end Verstappen speculation – for now’

Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff said in the statement that announced George Russell and Kimi Antonelli would be staying with the team in 2026 that “confirming our driver line-up was always just a matter of when, not if”.

Yet for some time this season there very much was doubt about who would be driving for the former champions next season.

The spectre of Max Verstappen has hung heavily over both Mercedes drivers for a fair portion of this season – and Russell more so than Antonelli.

Wolff said at the Australian Grand Prix at the start of the season that a move for Verstappen was “not on any radar”.

But it was a statement that reflected Wolff’s acceptance that the prospects of attracting Verstappen were relatively distant, and was aimed at deflecting disruptive questions.

It did not change the fact that Wolff was interested in Verstappen, and everybody in F1 knew it.

Wolff tried to get the Dutchman last year, before eventually admitting defeat. And they had talks again this season.

It was Russell who explicitly spelled out what was happening, at the Austrian Grand Prix at the end of June.

“It’s only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing,” Russell said. “But from my side, if I’m performing as I’m doing, what have I got to be concerned about? There are two seats in every Formula 1 team.”

That was a reference to Russell’s emphatic victory in the previous race in Canada, and to the fact that the Briton was already by that point not only having arguably his best season in F1, but comfortably outperforming his highly touted rookie team-mate.

That same weekend, Russell let slip something of the level of discomfort the saga had produced in him.

Russell, who is managed by Mercedes as well as employed by them, knew before flying to Hungary that prospects of a deal with Verstappen were over, so he was prepared.

Discussing the prospect of a new contract for himself, he said: “Whenever we come to an agreement, we will get it done, but it has to work for both of us.

“Something we need to think about. What do they want and what do I want?

“We have been in a bit of a unique situation for the last few months. I don’t have huge power in this agreement. And maybe interests were not aligned for the last six months. But it’s my job to perform and reduce that risk.

“I still trust Toto and the team will continue to support me, but for Kimi and me the last six months have not been the most assuring and that is conflicting.”

In-demand Verstappen still at the top of F1’s pecking order

Job security is not a luxury many F1 drivers enjoy, even those, like Russell, who can count themselves among the very best on the grid.

Russell would be close to the top of anyone’s list of best-performing F1 drivers this season, indeed for the last several seasons. But there is a pecking order in F1, and Verstappen is at the top.

Had Verstappen not been a possibility, a new contract with Russell would have been a no-brainer for Mercedes. But he was, so it wasn’t.

Russell did not know that it would be him to make way if Wolff had succeeded in landing the four-time world champion, but he had a good idea that would probably be the case.

On paper, the logical person to move aside had Verstappen switched to Mercedes would have been Antonelli.

He is a rookie, his first season has had plenty of downs as well as a few ups, and Russell has been performing comfortably better than him.

With Verstappen out of the picture at Mercedes for the time being, Russell said he wanted to take some time to think about how he wanted the relationship to work in the future.

Considering neither party had a better option, and both were insistent that a deal would get done, the subsequent talks have taken some time.

One of Russell’s considerations was the new rules that are being introduced next year for both cars and engines.

Mercedes are widely believed within F1 to be ahead when it comes to the performance of the new power-units, which will have a much greater proportion of their performance coming from the electrical part of the engine, as well as run on sustainable fuels.

But what if they are not? Mercedes’ statement made no mention of the length of the drivers’ contracts, beyond saying only that they would race for the team “into 2026”.

Russell’s new deal is said to be “multi-year”. But that could just as easily mean one fixed year plus options for another one or two as it could two fixed years plus an option for another one.

It would be a surprise if Russell had not negotiated some degree of flexibility in the event that Mercedes are not competitive next year.

A lot will depend on the competitive picture next season.

The change is too great for any team to go into 2026 with any level of confidence.

After four championships in a row, Verstappen has not enjoyed Red Bull’s slip from competitiveness since the middle of 2024.

He fought a great rearguard battle to retain the title last season despite winning only twice in the final 14 races of the season.

But he enjoyed it not one bit when that level of competitiveness continued into this year and his prospects of a fifth title effectively evaporated after just a handful of races, even if they still remain faintly alive as the sport heads into the final quarter of the season.

Contract to 2028 or not, Verstappen could easily be tempted by a move again if Red Bull, who have set up their own engine company to produce their new power-unit for the 2026 rules, cannot win next season.

And Russell knows the rules of the game.

Wolff said earlier this year: “When it comes to the contract situation, our sport is pressure, constant pressure. Whether you’re in the car, outside the car, you just need to cope with that. And George knows that, like any other driver knows it.

The Inbetweeners star ‘won’t answer calls’ from castmates as they plan huge reboot

One former The Inbetweeners actor seems to be avoiding his phone amid the huge reboot of the hit comedy series as his co-stars claim he doesn’t answer their calls

One Inbetweeners star seems to be playing hard to get as the hit E4 sitcom makes its huge comeback. The comedy series is said to be returning next year with all four original cast members keen to be on board.

Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas shot to fame when the show became a hit with fans over three series from 2008 to 2010. Its success even resulted in two films that followed in 2011 and 2014.

Over the weekend, show creators teased they are plotting more adventures for the four iconic characters – Jay Cartwright, Will McKenzie, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper. However, says after the news broke one star might not be making a comeback with them.

According to Joe and James, one familiar face has been avoiding their calls. Theo James is too “handsome, nice and funny” to revive his role, say his former castmates.

The White Lotus and Divergent star played club rep bully James in The Inbetweeners Movie. However, Theo’s success means he has become so big and in demand that Joe and James “can’t get near him”.

Speaking on their podcast, Joe and James Fact Up, James revealed: “You can’t be that handsome, that nice and also quite funny. I had to become funny because I was such an odd-looking man.

“I hope he gets Bond a he is one of us, he is one of our own. He doesn’t answer any of my calls or anything but sure.” Joe added: “Well he is, you know, massive.

“Won’t answer his phone after everything.” James teased: “If he wasn’t such a great guy I’d f***ing hate that d***head.” Theo has gone on to find Hollywood fame as he’s played Cameron in White Lotus and Four in the Divergent series, and has even been tipped to play the next James Bond.

Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, who were the masterminds behind the show, are said to have signed a deal with production company Banijay UK and are “plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh, friends).” The company have managed to secure a deal that can “bring The Inbetweeners back” across film, TV and stage.

Simon actor Joe revealed his excitement for a potential reunion with his castmates as he told the Mirror he “loves them”. He praised: “I love being around them.

“And I’ve worked with them in other contexts as well – really, I’ve taken every opportunity to work with one of that group ever since the show ended. I’ve got my podcast with James, me and Simon go back to university, and Blake Harrison is a great friend, so I love working with them.”

Speaking of working together once again, Joe told us: “So in some capacity, of course! Working on it again would be wonderful.” Fans are also hoping actress and comedian Emily Atack will be on board.

Joe is hopeful too, as he shared: “I actually haven’t spoken to Emily recently, but I’ve followed her career. I just think it’s really, really impressive how she’s built this fantastic career from not just acting, but also her own personality and being funny and being herself.

“And what strikes me is just how much talent there is in the cast. So many other people have gone on to have these amazing careers in their own right, doing stand-up or just being funny.

“I think that is a really, really good sign in comedy that people are not just comedy actors, but they’re creators as well. And Emily is that. So, I’m not surprised that there’s a clamour for her to come back as well.”

Apple to increase Chinese investments amid US-China trade tension

Apple has pledged to increase its investment in China as tensions between Washington and Beijing rage on.

CEO Tim Cook said on Wednesday that the tech giant told China’s industry minister, Li Lecheng, the iPhone maker will keep investing in China, according to an official summary of their meeting in Beijing released by the Chinese government.

The report gave no details of the size of the potential investment.

Many US companies have become cautious about relations with China as the world’s two biggest economies clash over tariffs and as United States President Donald Trump seeks to promote manufacturing in the US rather than elsewhere.

The California-based company, which has also made investment pledges to Washington, DC, has so far remained relatively unscathed by the trade war between the US and China. Other companies, such as Nvidia and Qualcomm, have found themselves the target of Chinese investigations.

Washington has long placed sanctions on Chinese companies, such as Huawei.

A Shanghai-based government affairs consultant, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the media, said US companies are wary of angering a White House that could hurt them at home in the world’s biggest consumer market for appearing too pro-China, the Reuters news agency reported.

At the same time, they are seeking to avoid appearing insincere in Beijing, where they have pledged to be “in China, for China”, he added.

In August, Cook presented Trump with a custom US-made plaque mounted on a 24-carat gold stand commemorating Apple’s “American Manufacturing Program”, after saying it would invest an additional $100bn in domestic manufacturing.

“This may place Apple in the crosshairs of President Trump and his policies, but given Apple’s operations, it is possible that this move was pre-approved by the administration. These vague announcements may also be purely a public relations tactic rather than anything meaningful, given that tangible investments were never presented to the public,” Babak Hafezi, chief executive officer at Hafezi Capital, an international consulting firm, told Al Jazeera.

When Cook visited China in March, Apple made public its plans for a new clean energy fund there worth $101m (720 million yuan).

Meanwhile, Apple, which relies on suppliers and factories in China where most of its iPhones are assembled, has been trying to shift some manufacturing capacity to India.

“India was a tactic to diversify its supply chain production, increase redundancy, and mitigate geopolitical risk,” Hafezi said.

Apple’s COO Sabih Khan on Tuesday visited Lens Technology, a Chinese glass supplier for Apple, the Changsha-based company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Lens Technology produces glass covers for Apple products, including the iPhone and Apple Watch, and has been a partner for 19 years, it said.

China hopes Apple will continue to explore the Chinese market and grow together with Chinese suppliers, Industry Minister Li Lecheng, who is also in charge of infotech, told Cook, adding that China would continue to foster a good business environment for foreign companies, including Apple.

Growth in China

Apple’s shipments in China grew 0.6 percent from a year earlier to 10.8 million units in the third quarter against the backdrop of sluggish demand in China’s smartphone market, according to data research firm IDC on Wednesday.

Boosted by the iPhone 17 series, it was the only brand among China’s three biggest vendors to achieve growth in shipments during the period.

As part of his visit to China this week, Cook visited Apple’s store in Shanghai and met Chinese game developers and the designer of the popular Labubu dolls, he said in posts on China’s X-like Weibo.

On Monday, he said the iPhone Air would be available for pre-order in China after the industry ministry cleared the way for major telecom operators to support its eSIM functionality.

“The business community has always been a stabiliser of China-US relations and a promoter of pragmatic cooperation,” China’s ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, said during an event in Washington on Tuesday.

Many US companies have “chosen China” and are benefiting both countries, Xie added.

On Wall Street, Apple’s stock is trending upwards. As of 11:30am in New York (15:30 GMT), it is up by about 1 percent.

The latest comments come amid increasing tensions between Washington and Beijing this week. On Wednesday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters the US is ready to impose new tariffs over its purchase of Russian oil.

Molly-Mae Hague reveals key reason why she wants second child

Molly-Mae Hague is back on Prime Video this weekend and in the second part of her documentary, she explains why she wants a sibling for daughter Bambi

Molly Mae Hague has admitted she wants to have a second child, so her daughter Bambi has a sibling. The former Love Island star, business entrepreneur and influencer will be back on TV screens this weekend as the second series of her Prime Video reality series launches.

And in the run up to the streaming launch, Molly-Mae revealed she does hope to have another baby with partner Tommy, the main reason being because of how close she is to her own sister Zoe. Molly Mae said: “I think about it a lot and it’s something that I feel quite a large pressure around because I’m desperate to give Bambi a sibling.

“My life wouldn’t have been the same without my sister. I was the younger sister, so I benefited even more from having someone to guide me and someone to look up to. I’d want that for Bambi, but I would never want to do it just for her – I’d want to do it also because it’s something I want to do.”

Molly also confirmed in the interview with Cosmopolitan magazine that she is not currently living full time with Tommy Fury. The pair met on the 2019 series of Love Island, later becoming engaged and welcoming their daughter Bambi in 2023. The split last year but reconnected in 2025.

She said: “We’re back together, and we’re just navigating our way through – forming our relationship again in the public eye and really just figuring it all out, to be honest.

“Nobody’s relationship is perfect, and even though we’re back together, I’ve never shied away from the fact that there are still good days and bad days, like all relationships. I try to keep things as real as I can.

“So as much as I’m like, “We’re back together and we’re in such a better place, and I’m probably the happiest I’ve been”, there’s still highs and lows.”

Fans will find out much more about the relationship this weekend when the first three episodes of Molly-Mae: Behind It All – Series 2 drop on Prime Video. The latter three episodes will drop early 2026.

The second series follows the remarkable success of series 1, which became the most-watched series on Prime Video by young women (18-34) in the UK.

The streaming platform says on screen it will show Molly Mae as she takes her business empire to the next level while navigating the challenges of motherhood under the scrutiny of millions.

The previous series covered her break-up from Tommy, and at the time she said: “The last couple of months have been like the worst couple of months of my life.

“The feeling of a break up, it’s like a physical pain, like your heart actually hurts. For everyone else, it’s news, a bit of gossip. But for us, it’s real life. Your whole world just feels like it’s over.

“You don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. I’m dealing with the falling apart of our relationship.” The eventually got back together and she described the relationship as “worth saving”. Molly Mae was born in Stevenage and grew up in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, while Tommy was born and raised in Manchester.

Tommy is also the brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and is a boxer himself too who regularly posts photos online in training.
