Muscat leads race to become new Rangers head coach

Rangers are continuing discussions with managerial candidates despite Kevin Muscat emerging as the favourite to take over from Russell Martin.

Muscat played for the club in the early 2000s and is currently in charge of Chinese side Shanghai Port.

It is understood discussions have taken place with the 52-year-old Australian, with some at Ibrox keen on his appointment after Steven Gerrard ruled himself out of the running.

If a deal was agreed with Muscat, it is believed he would not be available until the Chinese league season concludes on 22 November.

Reports suggest former Rangers midfielder Neil McCann could step in as interim boss until his former Ibrox team-mate finishes up in Asia.

The club have been stressing that no deal has been done and talks with other targets remain ongoing.

Capped 46 times by Australia, Muscat has won league titles as a manager in Australia with Melbourne Victory, Japan with Yokohama F Marinos and China with his current club.

He had playing spells in England with Crystal Palace, Wolves and Millwall and won a domestic treble with Rangers in the 2002-03 season, making 26 appearances.

Having been appointed following Rangers’ takeover by a US-led consortium in the summer, Martin lasted just 123 days in charge following a calamitous four-month stint.

Rangers are eighth in the Scottish Premiership with just one win in six games.

What has Muscat achieved in management?

Graphic detailing Kevin Muscat's managerial record in Australia, Japan and ChinaGetty Images

During a 19-year playing career that yielded 123 bookings and 12 red cards, Muscat was once branded the “most hated man in football”.

Post-retirement, he revealed former Rangers manager Alex McLeish did not trust him to play in an Old Firm derby during his brief spell at Ibrox.

It is to the Australian’s credit that he has since gone on to somewhat shake off his hot-head image in an impressive 13 years in management.

His glowing CV attracted Rangers two years ago, but he reportedly missed out on the job when the club opted for Philippe Clement instead.

At that time, former Rangers team-mate Neil McCann told BBC Scotland that the Ibrox side would be getting someone with “presence” who “understands the league, the intensity, the rivalry and how to get the job done”.

Muscat was then first-team boss at Yokohama F Marinos, where he won 2022 J-League after taking over from Ange Postecoglou following his exit for Celtic.

He also succeeded Postecoglou at Melbourne Victory after a period working under the current Nottingham Forest head coach.

It was in Melbourne where Muscat’s managerial career began, winning the A-League Championship twice in five-and-a-half years before his move to Japan.

Runners-up spots in the J-League in 2021 and 2023 bookended his 2022 triumph in Yokohama.

Muscat became a title winner in a third different country last year in China, and he is on the verge of another with just four games remaining as his side sit top with a two-point lead.

Across his managerial tenures in Australia, Japan and China, his win rate stands at 54%, with his teams scoring an average of 1.9 goals per game while conceding 1.2.

His Shanghai Port side scored 96 times in a 30-game league-winning campaign last year.

What information do we collect from this quiz?

What does Muscat’s only job in Europe tell us?

It has not all been rosy in Muscat’s managerial career. His only foray into Europe lasted just 14 games and six months with struggling Belgian side Sint-Truiden.

Muscat only won two of his 14 fixtures before he was sacked in December 2020 with the club in relegation trouble.

There was no real upturn in form following his exit, with the team going on to finish the campaign seven points outside of the relegation spots.

Would Rangers fans take to Muscat?

Graphic detailing Ange Postecoglou and Kevin Muscat's records while managing in Australia and JapanGetty Images

It seemed whoever replaced Martin would have a hard time winning over the support following Gerrard’s withdrawal.

However, it appears Muscat would be a popular appointment among the fans.

His reputation as a player suggests he is not be someone to be messed with, which is perhaps appealing to the support given their team’s fragile displays this term.

But leading a side is about more than being able to deliver the hairdryer treatment, and Muscat has shown he can win in three different countries.

A treble winner in his only season in Glasgow, he will also be well aware of the pressure and demands at Ibrox, although that did little to help Martin, who also had a brief spell at Rangers as a player.

Having enjoyed success in Australia and Japan, just like Postecoglou, Muscat’s record reads eerily similar to the former Tottenham boss’ pre-Celtic CV.

Control, choke points: The battle lines in southern Sudan

Recent battlefield gains by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) may turn the tide in Kordofan, analysts have told Al Jazeera.

Sudan’s devastating war between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has raged for two and a half years, resulting in massive displacement and the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, according to the United Nations.

Yet SAF’s capture in September of the strategic city of Bara, which the RSF was using for logistics, supplies, and as a muster point for reinforcements, is seen as a sign that SAF may have swung the pendulum in its favour.

Why is Bara important?

Bara lies about 350km (217 miles) southwest of the capital Khartoum along the “Export Road” used to truck goods from Khartoum to el-Obeid, capital of North Kordofan State.

It also exports its own agricultural products and livestock to the rest of Sudan.

The Khartoum-el-Obeid connection is vital because from el-Obeid, roads lead outwards to South Sudan and Sudan’s east and Darfur in the west.

From Khartoum, roads lead northeast to Port Sudan on the Red Sea, where the wartime government was until recently. Roads also lead north to Egypt and east to Eritrea and Ethiopia.

SAF took el-Obeid in February, after a two-year RSF siege, and took Khartoum in March, so taking Bara gave it solid control over the Export Road to use as a supply route, independent Sudanese military and political analyst Akram Ali told Al Jazeera.

(Al Jazeera)

Bara and el-Obeid lie near the westernmost reaches of SAF control, well to the east of el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur and the last city SAF holds in the vast western region. Between the two is a stretch of RSF control – and siege on el-Fasher – that SAF has to breach.

For the RSF, keeping Bara and a foothold in Kordofan was important because it allowed it to put pressure on SAF, which holds territory to the north, and to link the areas it controls in Kordofan and Darfur to South Sudan, links it uses to move weapons and fighters.

How did SAF take Bara?

The army launched an offensive on Bara from the south on September 11, while RSF defences were concentrated on the eastern side, analyst Abdul Majeed Abdul Hamid said.

SAF sent continuous drone strikes against RSF targets, then launched the Darfur Track Armed Struggle Movement, an assault force known for mobility and speed, from el-Obeid.

The force successfully engaged and defeated the RSF unit defending Bara, then entered the city with heavy firepower, according to a military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The officer said the operation relied on speed and keeping the RSF occupied on several fronts to prevent it from sending reinforcements.

Most of Bara’s civilians supported SAF, according to Abdul Hamid, and the RSF quickly retreated.

The operation cut off RSF supply and military support lines, he added, isolating their remaining positions in areas such as al-Khuwei to the west and al-Nahud to the east.

For the RSF, keeping Bara and a foothold in Kordofan was important because it allowed it to put pressure on SAF, which holds territory to the north, and to link the areas it controls in Kordofan and Darfur to South Sudan, links it uses to move weapons and fighters.

Losing Bara also meant that the RSF could no longer keep the city of el-Obeid under siege.

Will the RSF lose the Kordofans?

The RSF announced in February this year that it had entered an alliance with the Southern People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). South Kordofan includes the Abyei region, disputed between Sudan and South Sudan. The SPLM-N controls the vast, isolated Nuba Mountains region in South Kordofan, right up against the border with South Sudan.

However, despite that new stronghold, analysts told Al Jazeera that losing control over the Export Road spells a serious deterioration in the RSF’s power in the Kordofans.

“The army’s entry into el-Obeid marked the beginning of their actual collapse,” said Ali.

An army unit called “Al-Sayyad” – named after a commander killed in the early days of the war – had moved from Rabak, capital of White Nile State, in a campaign that eventually reached el-Obeid.

Political analyst Ahmed Shomokh said liberating Bara opens the door to reactivating the SAF air base in el-Obeid, the largest in Kordofan, after two years of inactivity, “significantly [enhancing] the logistical and combat capabilities of the Sudanese army” and helping SAF’s campaign to expel RSF from the Kordofans.

Taking back all of Kordofan would allow SAF to work towards liberating Darfur, Abdul Hamid said.

“The army has combat experience and personnel capable of liberating Kordofan with the same capabilities it used to retake the cities of central Sudan and the capital,” Abdul Hamid continued.

The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 10 million in what has become the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

His family said in a statement to the PA news agency: “It is with enormous sadness that we bring the curtain down on our wonderful and hugely loved father, Tony Caunter, who died peacefully yesterday evening, just eight days after his beloved wife of 63 years, Fran, also passed away. During Caunter’s time playing Roy, one of the headline-making EastEnders storylines involved Pat’s affair with her ex, Frank Butcher, played by Mike Reid.

Caunter’s other acting roles included Pennies From Heaven, Tumbledown, and TV series Juliet Bravo. He also appeared in the TV drama series Boon, which starred EastEnders’ Michael Elphick.

“I’ve been watching 1998-2000 recently and Roy was one of the best characters. Always down on his luck but such a brilliant character! Sad to hear Tony Caunter has passed away,” one mourning fan wrote on Twitter (X) this evening as news of Caunter’s death broke.

“Very sad news. Roy was always a favourite of mine, and Tony an excellent actor,” another added, with a third penning: “Sad news rip tony.. Roy didn’t half put up with a lot of rubbish with his son Barry causing him trouble and Pat cheating with Frank. He was in a great era of the show.”

The late EastEnders actor was married to Frances Wallace for 63 years prior to her death earlier this month. They shared four children together.

Princess Kate dresses for the outdoors in exact all-weather jacket that’s still in stock

During an outing today, Kate Middleton made a quick outfit change as she swapped her Alexander McQueen trench for this season’s trendiest jacket – and we’ve found where to shop her exact look

The Prince and Princess of Wales made an unannounced appearance in Northern Ireland today, as they kicked off a series of Royal duties. William and Kate travelled to County Tyrone, where they were treated to a ride in a fire truck and watched trainee firefighters take part in drills at the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Learning and Development College.

Earlier in the day, Kate styled a signature look of hers, donning an Alexander McQueen coat dress in olive green, but right before departing from the fire station, Kate made a shocking outfit swap, ditching the designer trench coat for a Barbour jacket we’ve seen the Duchess wear before.

The barn jacket has soared in popularity recently and has quickly been hailed as this autumn’s must-have outerwear; the Princess has today showcased its style and practical prowess. And what’s more, we know where to shop Kate’s exact coat.

Giving a nod to a style adored by the late Queen Elizabeth II, who adored wearing her Barbour Green Waxed Beaufort Jacket (£299) when out in the country. Kate took notes from the Queen’s iconic looks today, as she sported a beloved Barbour jacket of her own.

Kate switched her McQueen coat dress for this Barbour Winter Defence Wax Jacket (£269), a piece we’ve seen her wear before in 2021.

Described as an update on Barbour’s classic Defence style, Kate’s beloved jacket features a heavier-weight waxed cotton outer, providing extra warmth and protection against the elements, making it a must-have piece as we head deeper into autumn and as we transition into the winter months.

Touted as a practical yet stylish jacket that’s sure to be perfect for any occasion, from country walks to daily wear, this jacket boasts a cosy polyester lining and comes finished with Barbour’s iconic tartan, a signature style adored by the Royals, which adds an extra heritage appeal.

Designed with utility in mind, Kate’s Winter Defence jacket features shoulder epaulettes and four stud-close utility pockets, ideal for storing essentials on the go. Armed with a zip fastening and a studded storm flap, this piece ensures you stay protected from the winter weather, while the cord-lined funnel neck adds a touch of comfort and timeless style.

Kate’s exact Barbour jacket is up for grabs from House Of Bruar for £269 in Kate’s go-to Olive shade. This jacket is currently available in nearly all sizes, with only size 16 temporarily out of stock.

For those looking to secure the Royal style on a smaller budget, don’t worry, we’ve found plenty of must-have barn jacket styles that emulate Kate’s look without needing a Royal bank account.

Marks & Spencer currently has a range of similar styles available, including this Waxed Pure Cotton Utility Jacket (£130) in the Royal-approved Olive shade. Available in sizes 8 to 24, this collared jacket from the Per Una collection is made from British Millerain waxed pure cotton and delivers a stylish finish just like that of the Duchess. This jacket is cut in a regular fit, with a concealed zip and popper fastening. Turn-back cuffs and buttoned flap pockets on the front create a utility-inspired look, mimicking Kate’s Barbour piece, and it’s fully lined for comfort and plenty of warmth this autumn.

Kylie Jenner’s music debut slammed as ‘completely mortifying’ – ‘Nobody asked for this’

Reality TV star and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner launches her music career as King Kylie with Terror Jr collab Fourth Strike but fans have called her music debut ‘cringe’

Kylie Jenner has launched her music career with a feature on Terror Jr’s new single Fourth Strike, released on Monday night, but not all of her fans are convinced by her vocal skills.

The 28-year-old entrepreneur, best known for The Kardashians and her billion-dollar cosmetics brand, appears on the track under her revived alter ego King Kylie, a nod to her social media persona from 2014 to 2016.

Fourth Strike is a follow-up to Terror Jr’s 2016 single Three Strikes, which featured in a Kylie Cosmetics campaign and sparked rumours that Jenner was secretly the singer. This time, she confirmed her involvement, performing the bridge and closing the track with a whispered “King Kylie.”

On the song, Jenner can be heard singing: “I just wanna tell you, I’m sorry / Touch me, baby, tell me I’m your baby / Write your name all over my body.”

Reactions to Jenner’s musical debut were divided however as one fan wrote on X: “How embarrassing, king autotune,” while another commented: “Oh baby, stick to the lip kits.”

Others were more critical, with one user adding: “Oh great, just what the world needed – Kylie Jenner thinking she’s a pop star now. Someone please tell her ‘vocal range’ doesn’t mean whispering over autotune.”

Another joked: “Kylie Jenner making music is the biggest recession indicator. Nobody asked for that s***.”

Jenner addressed her decision to collaborate with Terror Jr in an Instagram post following the song’s release, sharing photos from the studio and a video of her daughter Stormi, seven, singing along.

“There was a little rumor 10 years ago that I was the one actually singing on Three Strikes,” Jenner wrote. “It wasn’t me (wish it was) so I had the idea to come together for Fourth Strike and it would actually be ME FEATURED!”

She thanked Terror Jr “for making another perfect song,” adding that she was “soooooo nervous but so grateful.”

Alongside her first music release, Jenner announced that her new King Kylie cosmetics collection will launch on October 18. The line is inspired by her early online persona and marks what she called the return of her “fearless era.”

“I’ve seen all your messages asking for a King Kylie collection, the fearless era that had a dream at just 17 years old,” she said. “That’s why I posted that tweet back in 2022. I wanted to give you exactly what you’ve been waiting for.”

The Kylie Cosmetics website states that the collection will feature “best-selling formulas in iconic, limited-edition shades.”

Tens of thousands rally in Brussels to protest austerity plans

A general strike against proposed austerity measures in Belgium has grounded flights and halted public transport networks.

Approximately 80,000 people took to the streets in Brussels’s city centre on Tuesday, police said, denouncing potential cuts to social welfare programmes.

Some of the protests devolved into scuffles, as police used tear gas and protesters set off flares and smoke bombs, according to The Associated Press news agency. Several dozen protesters were detained, AP reported.

Some demonstrators carried red prohibition signs with the number 67 on them, in reference to a planned increase in the retirement age. “Right to a pension at 65,” the signs read.

Others sported a picture of conservative Prime Minister Bart De Wever with the caption “wanted for pension theft”.

“We are heading towards a future that doesn’t look good,” one protester, 59-year-old Chantal Desmet, told the AFP news agency. “The government has to take notice.”

Flights cancelled at Brussels International

Walkouts from airport security staff caused all departing flights to be cancelled at the country’s main airport – Brussels International Airport – the facility said, while protests forced cuts on most of Brussels’s underground train, bus and tram lines, according to public transport operator STIB.

The protest is the latest this year against a push by De Wever’s coalition government – which faces a budget deficit that violates EU rules and is trying to find some $12bn in savings – to introduce cuts to pensions and healthcare systems.

But the prime minister’s plans have infuriated the country’s powerful trade unions, which are leading the protest and nationwide strikes.

“What really mobilises people are pensions,” Thierry Bodson, leader of the 1.5 million-member-strong FGTB union, said on the French-language state radio station RTBF.

“This government promised more sustainable jobs and increased purchasing power. Hot air! And once again, everyone is paying, except the rich,” said trade union CSC, as it urged people to join Tuesday’s protest.

The action is ramping up pressure on De Wever, who has pledged to cut deficits without raising taxes but is struggling to finalise next year’s budget.
