South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was released from detention Saturday, AFP reporters saw, walking out of the detention centre smiling before bowing deeply in front of waiting supporters.

“I bow my head in gratitude to the people of this nation”, Yoon said in a statement released through his lawyers.

Actor Bill Murray is setting the record straight on his rumoured relationship with singer Kelis.
The Hollywood legend, 74, and the Milkshake star, 45, sparked speculation after being spotted together at a London festival. Speaking on SiriusXM’s Sway In The Morning, Murray acknowledged the gossip but downplayed any romantic involvement. “I met this girl named Kelis”, he said. “I got great press that I was dating her, which really raised my cred”.

Though the two have reconnected, Murray denied they ever dated. “No. No, but, you know, one of us could be on the rebound any second”, he quipped. Kelis, however, dismissed the speculation at the time. When a fan asked her on Instagram in 2023 about the “Bill Murray allegations”, she simply responded: “Lol no babe, I wouldn’t bother at all”.
Rumours about their connection began in 2023 when Murray was spotted at several of Kelis ‘ performances. Sources claimed the duo began spending time together at a hotel and had been “getting close for a while” after first meeting stateside.

It’s said they initially bonded following the death of Kelis ‘ second husband in March 2022, while Bill’s estranged wife died in 2021. Kelis ‘ late husband Mike Mora passed away at the age of 37 after a battle with stage 4 stomach cancer. His condition was first confirmed seven months prior and he was initially given just 18 months left to live.
Bill was spotted enjoying a concert by the songstress when she took on the Mighty Hoopla Festival in South London. Backstage at the event, the pair posed for a cosy-looking photo. A source told The Sun: “They’ve met up in the States before which got people in the industry talking, and now are meeting up in London while they’re both here. They’ve clearly hit it off”.
They continued: “But they’ve also both shared relatively recent bereavements and have that common bond between them.

Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has urged the Alawite minority to surrender after intense fighting with the Syrian security forces.
Hasan Abdel-Ghani, spokesperson for the Syrian Defence Ministry, told Al Jazeera on Friday that fighters loyal to former President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday attacked security forces in several places in Latakia and Tartous governorates, home to the Alawite minority sect to which the al-Assad family belongs, killing “a number of security forces” in well-planned operations.
On Friday night, al-Sharaa said in a speech broadcast on Telegram that the Alawite sect had made an “unforgivable mistake”.
“The riposte has come, and you have not been able to withstand it”, he said. “Lay down your weapons and surrender before it’s too late”.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 250 people have been killed in fighting along the western coast, which members of the Alawite minority heavily populate. Amid the ongoing fighting, civilians and their families have entered the Russian Khmeimim base in the countryside of Latakia to seek refuge.
Al Jazeera’s Omar Al Hajj, reporting from the city of Tartous, said on Friday that authorities lost control in several neighbourhoods after the “rebellions”, but “reinforcements … from different provinces and districts” had carried out a “huge security operation” in Tartous, Latakia and Banias.
Syrian authorities said the al-Assad-aligned forces targeted security patrols and checkpoints in the Jableh area and surrounding countryside before spreading on Thursday.
Moussa al-Omar, a figure close to Syria’s new leadership, told the Reuters news agency that tens of thousands of fighters in the newly constituted security forces were deployed to the coast, and order had mainly been restored as of Friday night.
Reporting from the capital Damascus, Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar said fighting is continuing in some areas of the country, but a “tragedy” was growing due to the civilian death toll from both sides.
“The remnants of the old regime have killed more than 100 members of the security forces, including 15 civilians”, he said. “That’s why al-Sharaa called on the security forces to show maximum restraint and asked them to protect civilians no matter what, at all costs. This is becoming a huge concern now”.
The attack on Syrian forces by those loyal to the former removed president shakes al-Sharaa’s efforts to consolidate control amid ongoing US sanctions and security challenges, including the presence of Israeli troops in the southwest.
But the Alawite have said their communities in rural Homs and Latakia have been subjected to violence and attacks after al-Assad was overthrown.

The World Health Organization says it will send leprosy drugs to Nigeria this weekend after resolving testing hold-ups that led to a year-long delay in thousands of patients, including children, getting the medicine they need to prevent disability.
Nigeria reports over 1, 000 cases of leprosy yearly, a disease caused by a bacterium, Mycobacterium leprae, and mainly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, and eyes. It is curable with multi-drug therapy, but without treatment, the disease progresses and causes disfiguring sores and disabilities like blindness and paralysis. Patients also face significant stigma.
However, the country ran out of stock of the multi-drug therapy in early 2024 as a bureaucratic delay in supplies and new domestic testing regulations on imported medicines held up the drugs in India, where one of the components is made.
The delay, which caused significant suffering in the country, is just one example of the vulnerability of a global system that has seen stockouts in countries including India, Brazil and Indonesia in recent years, the U. N. special rapporteur for leprosy told Reuters.
A WHO spokesperson told Reuters that Nigeria had run out of leprosy medications, and the U. N. health agency, which organises shipments of the drug, had asked for a one-time waiver on the new testing policy. In January that waiver was granted.
