Two Palestinian prisoners: One went home, the other was exiled by Israel

Ramallah, occupied West Bank – The morning dawned full of anticipation as thousands of Palestinian families prepared to welcome their imprisoned relatives, who were scheduled to be released as part of a prisoner exchange deal with Israel.

Some had spent decades in prison, some were serving consecutive life sentences, and most had been rounded up wholesale by Israel in Gaza during its two-year war on the besieged enclave.

The Ramallah Cultural Centre was where the families of political prisoners being released to the West Bank gathered on Monday, and tears, embraces, and anticipation were everywhere.

But the tears flowing down one woman’s face seemed different as she leaned against her brother, weeping bitterly.

They were shocked and saddened by the news they had just gotten about their brother, prisoner Muhammad Ahmad Imran from Hebron, who was detained in December 2022 and handed 13 life sentences. And their joy at hearing he would be released had just been dashed.

‘All words fail’

Ibtisam and her brother Raed Imran had come to Ramallah two days ago, after they got a call from Muhammad from the Israeli prison where he was held, telling them that he would be among the prisoners to be released to the West Bank.

But when they arrived at the cultural centre on Monday morning, they were told that Muhammad was on the list, yes, but that he was among the more than 100 prisoners whom Israel had decided to exile from Palestine.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, Israel will be exiling 154 out of 250 Palestinian political prisoners it is releasing.

These men will likely face severe constraints on their movements and activities in the countries they will be taken to, and travel will be difficult given that they only have Palestinian citizenship.

Tamer Qarmout, associate professor in public policy at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera these exile orders amount to forced displacement of these individuals.

In addition, because Israel makes it nearly impossible for some Palestinians to travel outside Palestine, these prisoners’ families may never see them again.

Raed was still in disbelief, going over the past few days and all the things that had happened that made him sure his brother was coming home.

“I got a call from an Israeli officer … He told us not to show joy or receive well-wishers,” he said, describing a common experience for Palestinian families: threats by Israeli security forces – of violence, arrests, and worse if they showed any joy that their loved one was coming home.

“The Israeli army raided our home that night, asking where Muhammad would stay after his release. They warned against any celebrations, support for the resistance, or even messages of solidarity with Gaza. We told them we only wanted my brother’s freedom, and that we were prepared to shut our doors to any well-wishers.”

Ibtisam looked exhausted and tearful.

“I was so happy when I heard Muhammad would be released. We left Hebron two days ago … I wanted to be the first to receive him. But all that exhaustion from moving around and finding a place to stay here, it was all worth it; I was so sure all the fatigue would disappear at the moment of meeting,” she said with a sad smile.

“The occupation’s threats spoiled our joy and made us turbulent,” she added. “The manipulation of names and information was intentional, and this is what burned our nerves. [But] I will remain here until the last prisoner is released. I can’t describe what is in my heart … all words fail.”

Joy for the al-Zeir family

Also at the gate of the Ramallah Cultural Centre stood Bassam al-Zeir, a 60-year-old man from Dura, south of Hebron, his face tired but excited.

He was anticipating a reunion he had awaited for 23 years, with his brother Hani, a 50-year-old father of seven, and with their cousin Arafat al-Zeir.

Hani was arrested on June 28, 2002, and sentenced to 25 years in prison, of which he served 23 years. Arafat was arrested at the same time and sentenced to 35 years.

Bassam said it had been “a joyful thunderbolt” to learn that the two men were going to be released.

“My cousin Arafat’s name was on the first list then, at exactly 2am, my brother Hani’s name was released. We couldn’t believe it and started preparing to go to Ramallah right then.”

Bassam hasn’t seen his brother in more than two decades, as the family was denied any visits, likely because Bassam himself had been previously detained.

“I was arrested more than once, and they prevented me from seeing him, even during family visits, as if they wanted the separation between us to remain eternal.”

But, he added: “Freedom is coming … even if it’s delayed by 23 years.”

Despite his joy, Bassam is frustrated and saddened.

On the one hand, he said, he knew that the release of prisoners comes at an indescribable cost that the people of Gaza had to bear for two years.

And on the other hand, the restrictions the Israelis impose on prisoners’ families prevent them from expressing their joy at having their loved ones home again.

“We waited a quarter of a century [for this release] … but they even prevented joy from reaching us,” he says, his eyes welling with tears.

‘Cannot be described’

Then the bus arrived and prisoners began coming out, and Bassam surged forward with members of other families, eager to catch a glimpse of his brother and cousin.

But the crush of people at the doors of the bus was too much, and Bassam faltered, falling back a bit and shouting out “Hani! Hani!” in hopes that his brother would hear him.

Eventually, the brothers were reunited and tears flowed as they embraced and tried to pack a lot of feelings into those moments.

Asked about what was going through his head, Hani shook his head and said, “This feeling cannot be described in words…”

Arafat was not part of this tender moment. His health had deteriorated so much in Israeli prison that he had to be helped off the bus and whisked away immediately to be checked by doctors.

Relief at being out and seeing his brother after so long was apparent on Hani’s face, as was the weariness of his time in prison.

He and Arafat had been held in Ramon Prison until they were told shortly before their release that they were being moved to Ofer, another facility that Palestinians know is usually a last holding area for prisoners about to be released.

They were threatened, Hani said, but the joy of being moved to Ofer Prison was stronger.

“I felt my breath return, as if life had returned.

How Bright left her mark on historic Lionesses

Millie Bright’s international retirement is a reflection of a changing of the guard in Sarina Wiegman’s England team – but her impact on their success is unquestionable.

The 32-year-old played an instrumental role in the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory, starting all six matches as they claimed a first major trophy.

She wore the captain’s armband as England reached the World Cup final a year later and was a dependable leader throughout her international career.

Competition building and club demands

Bright’s decision is not a surprise but still a loss for Wiegman given her years of experience and the respect she has from her team-mates.

It has been a growing possibility ever since Bright withdrew from the Euro 2025 squad – a tournament England went on to win – stating she was “not able to give 100% physically and mentally”.

Her position in the side was no longer certain, with young defenders Maya Le Tissier and Esme Morgan continuing to progress with England, as well as the emergence of fresh WSL talent such as Arsenal’s Katie Reid this season.

Wiegman also enjoyed success at Euro 2025 with Leah Williamson, Alex Greenwood, Jess Carter and Morgan all combining in centre-back roles.

It all led to question marks over whether Bright would return to the squad this month for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Australia.

Wiegman has relied on a trusted, core group of players during her time in charge – but she is also ruthless and will not stand still if other prospects come to the fore.

Bright is still competing at the highest level with her club, captaining Chelsea and starting all of their WSL matches this season.

They will attempt to defend the three domestic titles they won last season, as well as chasing the elusive Women’s Champions League trophy they are yet to win.

Bright’s unforgettable role in 2022

Millie Bright and Rachel DalyGetty Images

Bright’s grasp on an England starring role began when she played in five of their six matches at the 2019 World Cup en route to the semi-finals.

She was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the semi-final defeat by the United States – a game which hinted at future success for England, albeit one that ended on a sour note for Bright personally.

As a mainstay under former manager Phil Neville, Bright was among those who had started to steer England towards a major tournament final, but had just come up short, as interest in the women’s game was slowly increasing.

They were a long way off selling out crowds at Wembley Stadium and were still battling for basic resources at club level but had formed one of the teams who were starting to ask questions of the all-conquering United States.

However, it was in 2022 when Bright cemented her place in Lionesses history and had her biggest year for her country.

Alongside captain Williamson, they formed an impenetrable partnership at the Euros, leading from the back and guiding a youthful, yet talented England team to success.

She was undoubtedly one of the stars despite not dominating the headlines in the way Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead or Mary Earps did.

A towering presence, who usually came out on top in a one-on-one duel, Bright was often Wiegman’s go-to person off the pitch, and she even did a job up front on occasions when it was needed on it – most notably finishing joint-top scorer at the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup in 2022, sharing the Golden Boot award with then-Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas.

As the vice-captain, she was vocal in the dressing room, an important part of Wiegman’s leadership group and someone young players often turned to for advice.

She was seen as one of the jokers of the group, usually found stood near best friend Rachel Daly or midway through a TikTok dance with Mary Earps.

In the aftermath of England’s Euro 2022 victory, she became a familiar name among casual viewers and carried the weight of responsibility going into the 2023 World Cup in Williamson’s absence, knowing external expectation had grown tenfold.

A sign of a new era for England

England’s transformation under Wiegman since her arrival in 2021 has been dramatic but Euro 2025 marked the start of a new era under the Dutchwoman.

Although familiar faces remain from the start of her tenure, Bright’s international retirement is the latest from a historic generation that is starting to pass on the baton.

She follows in the footsteps of goalkeeper Earps, defender Daly, record goalscorer Ellen White, midfielder Jill Scott and playmaker Fran Kirby who were all key components of England’s success in 2022.

There were new faces who shone this summer, most notably on-loan Brighton forward Michelle Agyemang and Chelsea striker Aggie Beever-Jones.

They are the names England fans expect to see at the 2027 Women’s World Cup and that will lead the country into a new era under Wiegman.

They can look at Bright’s elite career as an example of huge success and longevity, and as one of the figures who led the way for positive change in women’s football.

Big Brother’s George admits vile ‘Hitler’ comments led to sudden removal from house

Big Brother contestant George Gilbert has revealed the real reason he was removed from the house following repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour.

The parish councillor, 23, was given a formal warning by Big Brother during Monday night’s episode after he made a fellow housemate cry by apparently mocking them. George has now opened up about the situation on his Youtube channel.

Appearing on screen from his home, George told viewers: “Well here we are. I didn’t want to be making this video. I didn’t think I would have to make this video. But the people want to know what it was that I said to get booted out of the Big Brother house.

“It’s a real shame because I was thoroughly enjoying myself and I’m gutted that it has ended like this,” he added. “I got on so well with the crew and the other housemates. They all loved me and I’m not even joking, they genuinely did.”

George went on: “We had some great times, great conversations, and great debates and we did it passively. We agreed to disagree. So I was absolutely gutted when I was told I was being kicked out, but here we are.”

The Big Brother star star went on to add that he went on the show in the hopes of ‘spreading his beliefs’ and garnering more fans for his YouTube channel, which he hopes to make his full time career.

“They brand Big Brother as a social experiment where you can discuss things and be on a political spectrum. I wanted to meet new people and people who would challenge my beliefs and maybe help me learn something about myself and see if they could change my mind about some of my beliefs,” George added.

“I thought by going into the house and spreading what I believe as the truth that it would not only help me cement my views if they are right, or it would help other people see a different side of the story.”

However, it was George’s views that got him kicked out of the Big Brother house in the end as he admitted that he pushed the boundaries far too much.

George said he was ‘distraught’ after getting a verbal warning on the first night in the house. George told his housemates that he “doesn’t believe that anyone is intrinsically good or evil” and went on to use the most extreme example of Adolf Hitler.

Addressing his first verbal warning from Big Brother, George admitted that he said: “Hitler did the things that he did because he would have been fed a pack of lies about Jewish people and that’s why he did the things he did. He thought he was doing good for Germany. He thought Jews were to blame for all of Germany’s troubles. Hitler was misguided.”

George added that he received a second complaint from Big Brother on day three when he expressed an offensive reason for not wanting to have a child with a Black woman.

Of his second formal complaint from Big Brother, George said: “I like touching the boundaries and maybe I’m in the wrong but what I said was, as a ginger with blue eyes – I’m like the rarest form of human on earth – because red hair is recessive and not a dominant gene.”

In the end, it was George’s hurtful and homophobic comments about fellow housemate Sam that got him removed from the house. “I said in the diary room after Sam was crying about what I said that ‘if you can’t take the heat then get out of the Big Brother house’. So that was it.”

A Big Brother spokesperson said at the time of his exit: “Following repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour, George has been removed from the Big Brother House with immediate effect and will no longer participate in the programme.”

George’s comments did not air due to them being contrary to broadcasting standards. It has also been reported that George was given several warnings before the latest incident, most of which were not broadcast as the language was also contrary to broadcasting standards.

One example of such language, however, was seen during Monday’s episode. While in the diary room, housemate Sam reflected on comments George had made about him during a game of truth or dare where he had to tell each housemate their worst quality.

George told Sam he was “too” and he then appeared to mock Sam’s voice and body language by waving a limp wrist. Sam told Big Brother: “I think with the whole George situation, basically, I think it all just came to a bit of a head about the kind of impression that he did of me, or whatever.

“It was him doing it, mocking me as if I have some kind of like disability or something, which is just like rude anyway, and then all the boys kind of laughing. It just kind of felt like I was back in school, I think. And it just kind of brought all that back in that moment.”

Becoming emotional, he added: “It’s just so annoying, because I’ve really overcome a lot to become who I am, and I don’t want this comment to seep in and have an effect on me.”

George later told Sam: “The last thing I want to do is make someone feel s**t about themselves.” Later in the diary room, Big Brother told George: “Big Brother thinks that your language and behaviour was unacceptable and could cause offence, and is therefore issuing you with a warning.”

George also caused offence when, during a conversation about homelessness, he said people “know drugs are bad” and should “stop deflecting responsibility”. While the housemates were asleep, George was called to go into the Diary Room where he was told he would no longer be a contestant on the show.

The Big Brother contestant was then told by viewers to “grow up” after sharing his first post since being axed from the show. Now back at home, George took to his social media to share a post but it hasn’t gone down well with his followers.

The specific incident which caused George to be removed from the show but he had already received a warning from bosses due to his “inappropriate behaviour and language”.

George has now shared a video to his Instagram page where he discusses being kicked off the programme. The Big Brother contestant can be seen sitting barefoot in his garden with an open book across his face. He leans towards the camera and says: “I was asking questions. I just want to know the truth. You know?”

He then walks away from the camera and wrote in the caption: “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing,” which is a quote from Albert Einstein.

However, many viewers didn’t like George’s video, with many taking to the comments to share their opinions. Singer Sean Chriscole wrote: “You broke broadcast standards, I’ve read them. I know what they are, you know what they are. They’re dead easy to follow.

“I’ve seen contracts for Netflix and ITV and BBC as an actor myself. You have to say some stupid s**t to get sacked/contract terminated. Yet your [sic] brush it off as ‘I was just asking questions.’ Do some self reflection and grow up.”

Another said: “I just wanna know what you said that was soo bad,” while a third commented: “Just tell us what you said. We all want to know.”

George had plenty of controversial opinions during his time in the Big Brother house. He shared his views on homelessness, saying that homeless people should take responsibility for their financial situations. He then went on to say that most people who shoplift are driven by greed instead of desperation.

Friday’s eviction will continue as planned, the details of which will be explained during Wednesday’s episode of Big Brother: Late And Live.

Russia calls for restraint amid Pakistan-Afghanistan border clashes

Russia has urged Pakistan and Afghanistan to exercise restraint after deadly fighting erupted along the border for two days, killing dozens and halting bilateral trade in what has amounted to the worst clashes in recent memory.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it was closely monitoring the events and that “the situation is stabilising”, following similar statements from China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

“We welcome this process,” the ministry added.

Tensions rose on Thursday, when the Taliban blamed Pakistan for explosions in Kabul and the eastern province of Paktika.

Two days later, on Saturday night, Taliban forces attacked various Pakistani military outposts. As Pakistani forces retaliated, the two sides exchanged gun, artillery and drone fire through early Sunday morning and fought sporadically throughout the day.

The two sides have reported conflicting death tolls. Pakistan’s military said 23 of its soldiers were dead and claimed to have killed 200 Taliban and affiliated fighters, while Afghanistan said its forces killed 58 Pakistani soldiers.

By Monday, Pakistani troops were stationed on high alert along the closed border with Afghanistan, where hundreds of people and trucks loaded with goods remained stranded.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “greatly values dialogue and diplomacy”, but warned that “any further provocations would be met with an unwavering and befitting response”.

Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021. Since then, Islamabad has accused the Taliban of allowing the Pakistan Taliban, also known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), to operate within Afghan borders – a charge Kabul denies.

Russia, meanwhile, has sought to boost its influence in Afghanistan since the withdrawal of United States troops that led to the Taliban’s rise.

In 2022 and 2024, a Taliban delegation attended Russia’s St Petersburg International Economic Forum. In 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to the Taliban as “allies in the fight against terrorism” – namely the ISIL affiliate in Khorasan Province, ISKP, which has claimed responsibility for attacks in Russia, Afghanistan, Iran and elsewhere.

Mark Ronson puts his entire year on hold for possible favour from Taylor Swift

Mark Ronson shared that he recently performed at Selena Gomez’s wedding and is now keeping his calendar clear in case Taylor Swift wants him to DJ her big day

Mark Ronson has revealed that he recently DJ’d at Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding and joked that he’s keeping his year free in case Taylor Swift asks him to do the same for hers.

Speaking to Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, the music producer opened up about his friendship with Blanco, his famous stepfather Mick Jones, and some behind-the-scenes secrets from his career.

Ronson told Mills that his stepdad, Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones, wrote the iconic love song I Want to Know What Love Is for his mother. “That song is actually about my mum,” he said, adding that it’s surreal to have such a legendary ballad tied to his family’s story.

The Uptown Funk hitmaker also laughed as he debunked one of MTV’s biggest illusions – the celebrity homes featured on MTV Cribs. “Most of those houses weren’t real,” he admitted. “People would rent or borrow fancy places to look rich. The only real house was mine and it was tiny.”

Ronson said he feels grateful that Uptown Funk has become such a popular wedding song. “I love that people still dance to it, especially at weddings. It’s kind of wild that it’s turned into that kind of classic,” he said.

During the chat, Mills brought up Foreigner’s recent public offer to play at Taylor Swift’s wedding, prompting Ronson to reveal he’s keeping his schedule open just in case.

Scott asked: “Hey, I saw that Foreigner have offered to play Taylor Swift’s wedding. Have you seen that?” To which Mark replied: “Yeah, I saw that too.”

Scott continued: “I wonder if she’s said anything yet.” Before Mark laughed and said: “I think there’s a lot of people putting themselves up for that gig. Me – I’m keeping the year open as well.”

Scott joked: “You never know.” To which Mark agreed: “Exactly. You don’t know who’s going to get the call. I did DJ a wedding that apparently she was at a week ago.”

Scott then sounded surprised, as he asked: “A week ago?” To which Mark replied: “Yeah. I didn’t see her on the dancefloor, so I probably didn’t do the best job of selling my services there.”

Scott then asked: “Was this the Selena Gomez wedding?” Before Mark confirmed: “It was. This was that.”

He went on to share how he got the gig. “I’ve known Benny for ten years,” he explained. “When he got engaged, he said, ‘Will you come and do like a ’90s DJ set at my wedding?’ and I was like, sure.”

As the chat wrapped up, Mills teased that Taylor Swift should book Ronson for her own big day. Mark laughed, adding, “You could also get a good deal – maybe a Foreigner-Mark Ronson wedding package.”
