Liverpool players should ‘follow emotions’ to cope with Jota death – Slot

Liverpool boss Arne Slot says his players should be themselves and follow their emotions as they come to terms with the death of team-mate Diogo Jota.

Portugal forward Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash on 3 July in the Spanish province of Zamora.

The Reds play their first pre-season friendly since Jota’s death at Preston North End at 15:00 BST on Sunday.

In his first interview since Jota’s death, Slot told Liverpool TV: “If we want to laugh, we laugh; if we want to cry, we’re going to cry.

“If they want to train they can train, if they don’t want to train they can not train. But be yourself, don’t think you have to be different than your emotions tell you.

“We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.”

The funeral of the brothers took place in their hometown of Gondomar last Saturday when a large Liverpool delegation, including Slot, were in attendance.

Liverpool have retired Jota’s number 20 shirt across their men’s, women’s and academy teams in “honour and memory” of the former Wolves forward.

A number of tributes have been planned for the Preston game, including a pre-match rendition of Liverpool’s anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone and a minute’s silence, with both sets of players wearing black armbands.

“Nothing seems to be important if we think of what has happened,” said Slot. “But we are a football club and we need to train and we need to play again, if we want it or not.

“What I’ve said to the players, I can say it here as well. It’s very difficult to find the right words because we constantly debate what is appropriate. What is appropriate in our actions? What is appropriate [for] what we have to say? Can we train again? Can we laugh again? Can we be angry if there’s a wrong decision?

“And I’ve said to them, maybe the best thing for us to do is handle this situation like Jota was. And what I meant with that is that Jota was always himself, it didn’t matter if he was talking to me, to his team-mates, to the staff, he was always himself. So let us try to be ourselves as well.”

Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season.

He played his final match for Portugal as they beat Spain in the final of the Nations League on 8 June. He scored 14 goals in 49 internationals.

The Guardia Civil told BBC Sport that Jota and his brother died after their car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle.

Katie Price reaches out to daughter Princess after being banned from birthday

Katie Price has recently opened up about not being invited to her eldest daughter’s 18th birthday party, as she said “certain people don’t think it’s good for Princess to be seen with me”

Katie Price has reached out to her daughter Princess after being banned from her 18th birthday party. The mum-of-five has taken to her Instagram story to share a sweet message with her eldest daughter.

She shared a quote calling Princess “the most beautiful girl ever” as she tagged her as well. The message read: “Name a girl that can wear no makeup, no fake lashes and still be the most beautiful girl ever.”

Princess has made it clear she doesn’t plan on undergoing cosmetic surgery, stating she’s been “put off for life” after seeing the impact on her mother. Katie said she would support Princess if she did opt to have tweakments in the future but said she wanted her to wait until she was at least 21. Katie was just 18 when she underwent her first boob job.

Katie posted the huge compliment to her teenage daughter despite apparent family tension lately. Kate wasn’t invite to Princess’ 18th birthday party, but it seems that she isn’t holding any hard feelings.

The former glamour model revealed that she was banned from the celebrations, but the decision wasn’t down to Princess. She talked about the situation on the most recent episode of her Katie Price Show podcast alongside her sister Sophie.

Katie wished Princess a happy birthday as she explained: “Princess is now officially an adult so mummy and Princess can now go out together. If certain people would let her be seen with me.”

After discussing with Sophie, Katie then went on to speak about Princess’ new documentary which Katie is also not involved in. Katie said: “Everyone knows she’s doing this documentary – and I’m not in it. Certain people don’t think it’s good for Princess to be seen with me. Certain people that used to look after me.”

This is when Sophie hit back with why she thinks Katie isn’t allowed to be involved. Sophie said: “You aren’t on brand Katie. You are too risky Katie that’s why.”

Katie then seemed to start to talk about Peter Andre and their old PR team who now manage her ex husband and their children Junior and Princess. She explained: “It’s pathetic. I’m her mother. It’s sad. It’s so sad. When certain people who used to look after me are now looking after…”

It’s thought that the reason Katie wasn’t invited is because the party was going to be filmed for Princess’ documentary. Katie hit back: “The fact is there’s stuff my daughter is doing and I’m not allowed to be seen at any of it.

“Certain people who are filming Princess’ documentary used to do my filming. It’s fine, it’s just there’s always conflict of interest. People will cotton on to this. So we do have to do something for Princess’ 18th.”

While Princess had her 18th party, Katie jetted off to Ibiza to enjoy the summer sun. She has been documenting her holiday on social media where she has been rubbing shoulders with other celebs.

Katie was spotted being pictured at Wayne Lineker’s Ocean Beach Club, where she was seen hanging out with the owner and fellow guest Conor McGregor.

Kate Middleton was given a standing ovation as she returned to Centre Court for the Ladies’ Singles Wimbledon Final on Saturday.

The Princess of Wales’ emotional arrival into the Royal Box comes after she has scaled back her public appearances since revealing her cancer diagnosis last year.

Kate looked radiant as she made her entrance, dressed in a chic yellow dress with a pleated skirt and belted waist. Eagle-eyed fans will have noticed a stand-out bow accessory pinned to Kate’s dress. Prince William’s wife has been seen wearing the small dark green and purple bow attached below her shoulder at the sporting event in previous years.

But fans may not know the special reason for the fashion statement.

Kate is the patron of the AELTC, which conducts the day-to-day operations of The Championships and has been since 2016. The club made green and purple the official colours back in 1909. Kate first made the sartorial show of support in 2017 and has worn the same garment to the sporting event ever since.

The princess, who is the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, attended the final of the Women’s competition where Iga Swiatek beat Amanda Asiminova 6-0, 6-0.

Other VIPs lucky enough to get a seat in the royal box included former long-distance runner Mo Farah and former US world tennis No1 Billie Jean King.

Kate later presented the trophy to Swiatek. She also had some kind words for Anisimova who burst into tears after the match.

Anisimova was the first women’s singles finalist not to win a game for more than a century, going back to 1911.

Revealing details of her conversation with Kate, she said after the trophy ceremony: “It was such an honour to meet her,” Anisimova said. “I wasn’t sure if she was going to come out today, if she was going be there, so it was just really nice to see her. She definitely had a few things to say that were making me emotional again! But she was really kind, and she told me to keep my head high.

“I don’t really want to reveal everything she said to me, but I also spoke to her again after the match, because I passed by her, and she had all the best to say to me. So I guess it was a positive of today, and I can try and focus on that and not the match.”

Kate returned to public duties on July 2 with a visit to a hospital’s well-being garden, where she spoke candidly about her cancer recovery. She said, “You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment, treatments done, then it’s like, “I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.”

We want to be best Lions team ever and win 3-0 – Pollock

Henry Pollock says he wants the 2025 British and Irish Lions to be remembered as the best Lions team ever – and is targeting a 3-0 Test series whitewash.

The back row scored his first Lions try near the end of their 48-0 win over an Australia-New Zealand Invitational XV in Adelaide on Saturday.

The England tyro marked the achievement with his trademark celebration of holding two fingers to his neck as if to check for signs of life.

The Lions go into the three-match Test series against the Wallabies, which starts in Brisbane on Saturday, on the back of five successive wins in Australia.

“We want to come here and be the best Lions team ever,” said the 20-year-old. “We have been talking about that loads and 3-0 is definitely on the table, hopefully.

“We are all trying to strive to being the best team we can be and get that 3-0 win.”

The versatile Pollock, who only made his England debut in March, is in contention for a place in head coach Andy Farrell’s 23-man Test squad, despite stiff competition for places.

“I am happy to play wherever in the back row, whether that is at six, seven or eight, I will adjust and try my best,” he said.

“If that is me playing or not playing then I will adjust and be the best player I can be.”

The Lions’ last 3-0 series win in Australia was in 1904, while the three most recent three-Test series have all ended 2-1, with the Lions winning in 1989 and 2013, and the Wallabies triumphing in 2001.

Roomies with Lions legend Farrell

Pollock was eight when Owen Farrell went on his first Lions tour – the 2013 series in Australia – and had only just started playing for the minis at Buckingham Swans.

On this tour, Pollock has been rooming with the former England captain, who made the first appearance of his fourth Lions tour in the comfortable win in Adelaide – and has enjoyed learning from the veteran.

“It was good to get chatting to him. He is an amazing player and an amazing person as well,” said Pollock.

“It’s amazing to have him here, and with his experience there is no-one else like him. He has given 100% to the team – he has been on top of everything, which is what you want from him.

‘A special player who will do special things’

Despite having only one international cap, former England scrum-half Danny Care believes Pollock should be included in the squad for the first Test against the Wallabies.

Josh van der Flier, the World Player of the Year in 2022, Wales captain Jac Morgan, the in-form Ben Earl, and Tom Curry – who started all three Lions Tests against South Africa in 2021 – are all in contention for the open-side flanker spot.

However, Pollock’s two starts in Australia have come at number eight against Western Force and at blind-side flanker on Saturday.

Ireland’s Tadhg Beirne, who has captained the side twice in Australia, England’s Ollie Chessum and Curry are all in contention to start at at blind-side flanker, with Jack Conan or Earl the leading contenders to start at number eight.

Pollock’s usual position is open-side flanker, where he is yet to start under Farrell, but his versatility and eye-catching breaks may make his X-factor energy suited to an impact role off the bench.

“Pollock is great for that squad,” Care told BBC’s Rugby Union Weekly.

“He’s great for the coverage and for the fans.

“Everyone loves him. If you weren’t an England or Henry Pollock fan before, I think you are now. You can see just how much he loves being out there with the boys.

“He may make an error every now and then, but I think he’s special – a special player who will do special things.

“This series is a lot tougher than the Lions have seen so far. I don’t think the Lions have even scratched the surface of how good this Australian team could be.

Kebbi ADC Condemns Zogirma Killings, Accuses Kebbi Govt Of Neglect

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kebbi State Chapter, has condemned the recent killing of police officers and civilians by armed assailants in Zogirma village, Bunza Local Government Area, describing the attack as gruesome and unacceptable.

In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary in Kebbi, Abubakar Atiku, the ADC, expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Zogirma community.

The party lamented that the attack occurred at a time when residents of the area are living in fear and desperately seeking government protection. It accused the Kebbi State Government of insensitivity, alleging that while communities cry out for help, political leaders are preoccupied with parties and political meetings aimed at retaining power in 2027.

“The ADC strongly condemns this culture of neglect, indifference, and insensitivity towards the lives and welfare of ordinary citizens,” the statement said. “This tragic event further proves that many in leadership have forgotten their core responsibility to protect lives and improve the well-being of the people.”

The party called on the state government to act swiftly to restore law and order in Zogirma and other affected communities. It also demanded compensation for the families of the victims and the implementation of serious security measures to prevent further attacks.

“The lives of our citizens must come first, above all political interests,” the ADC added.

In the meantime, the people of Junju/Fada community in Birnin Kebbi, birthplace of the coalition-led African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader and former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, have distanced themselves from him and pledged their full support to Governor Nasir Idris.

The position of the community was made known during a solidarity visit to Governor Idris at Government House, Birnin Kebbi.

Israeli forces kill Palestinian children near water distribution point

Israeli air raids across the Gaza Strip have killed more than 30 Palestinians, at least 10 of them near a water distribution point, including six children, according to Palestinian Civil Defence.

Mahmoud Basal, civil defence spokesman, told the AFP news agency there were multiple Israeli strikes on Gaza City overnight and early morning on Sunday, resulting in eight deaths, “including women and children”, with additional injuries reported.

An Israeli attack on a home near the Nuseirat refugee camp in the south of Gaza City caused “10 martyrs and several injured”, he said.

An Israeli drone attack in central Gaza “hit a potable water distribution point in an area for displaced people”, killing eight Palestinians, including six children, with several others wounded.

Additionally, three people died when Israeli jets struck a tent housing displaced Palestinians in the southern coastal area of al-Mawasi, according to Basal.

On Saturday, Israeli forces killed at least 110 Palestinians across Gaza, including 34 people waiting for food at the controversial GHF distribution site in Rafah.
