David Kaff dead: This Is Spinal Tap icon dies aged 79 as friends pay tribute

Spinal Tap keyboardist David Kaff has died aged 79.

His band Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom shared the heartbreaking news on Friday. They wrote: “Our brother David Kaffinetti passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday. We are devastated by this event.”

David portrayed keyboardist Viv Savage in the 1984 mockumentary comedy film, This Is Spinal Tap. The critically-acclaimed film featured and was co-written by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer.

The three played a fictional heavy metal band called Spinal Tap, which was characterised as “one of England’s loudest bands”.

Director Rob Reiner played Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker who follows them on their American tour. Meanwhile, keyboardist Dave was cast to play Viv Savage for the fictional band.

The group continued as a band after the film was released and even made concert and live TV appearances. Still, as Savage, David was involved in Spinal Tap’s appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1984.

In the movie’s credits, when he was asked for his life’s motto, Kaff’s Savage famously says: “Have a good time… all the time.”

However, by the end of that year, he left the group and wasn’t involved in any further Spinal Tap activity.

Speaking to BAM in 1991, David said he had a “great affection for Viv” and added: “I played him very close to my heart… Just a little bit dimmer. If people like that character, chances are they’ll like me.”

At the time, he discussed being part of a sequel, saying: “I just hope I’m a part of whatever they do!” The sequel is said to be coming out in September, but David is not credited in the movie.

David was a member of Rare Bird in the 70s. The band released five studio albums. Their song Sympathy sold approximately one million copies worldwide.

The star went on to work as a session musician with Chuck Berry for The London Chuck Berry Sessions in 1972.

In a tribute, one person wrote: “I’m very sad to report that one of Folkestone’s finest and legendary musicans, Dave Kaffinetti passed away at a local care home on Friday. Dave was a member of million selling prog-rock band Rarebird and was also a member of Spinal Tap.

“Both Rarebird and Viv Savage have recently been inducted onto the Rock’n’Roll Wall of Fame. I very recently spoke to Dave, and he was extremely happy to know that he was remembered for his contribution to Folkestone’s musical heritage. RIP Dave.”

Andrew Cuomo says he will still run for NYC mayor after primary defeat

Andrew Cuomo has said that he will run as an independent in the race for New York City mayor, following a stinging loss to progressive upstart Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic Party primary last month.

The former New York State governor, who resigned in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, vowed to continue his mayoral bid in a video posted to social media on Monday.

“As my grandfather used to say, when you get knocked down, learn the lesson and pick yourself back up and get in the game. And that is what I am going to do,” said Cuomo. “The fight to save our city isn’t over.”

Mamdani’s 12-point win over Cuomo in the Democratic primary has electrified progressives and pushed pro-business Democrats, wary of his embrace of progressive economic policies and critical stance towards Israel, to seek an alternative after the bruising primary defeat.

The general election will take place in November, with Mamdani facing off against Cuomo and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who trails in most polls and whose tenure has been marred by a series of corruption scandals. Anti-crime figure Curtis Sliwa will also be in the race as the Republican nominee.

“I welcome everyone to this race, and I am as confident as I have been since three weeks ago on primary night, when we faced Andrew Cuomo and won that race by more than 12 points with the most votes of any Democratic nominee in New York City primary history,” Mamdani said in remarks responding to Cuomo’s entry into the general race.

“And we did so because of the fact that while Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams trip over themselves to make deals in back rooms with billionaires, we are fighting for working New Yorkers.”

Cuomo was once considered the near-prohibitive favourite to win the city’s Democratic primary, the main contest for the mayoralty in the liberal stronghold. But he gradually lost ground to an energetic campaign by Mamdani.

The 33-year-old democratic socialist ran a campaign sharply focused on cost-of-living and affordability issues, promoting policies such as free public buses and the creation of city-run grocery stores that will offer essential goods at more affordable prices.

Polling has shown that many of Mamdani’s populist economic policies, such as raising taxes on the wealthy to invest in social programmes and freezing rental prices in place for low-income tenants, enjoy widespread popularity. But Cuomo and other centrist Democrats have said that they are unrealistic and unworkable.

“My opponent, Mr Mamdani, offers slick slogans, but no real solutions,” Cuomo said in his video.

Cuomo and members of the Democratic Party have also criticised Mamdani’s position on Israel, which he has said is committing “genocide” in Gaza.

That opinion is in line with a growing number of international human rights groups and human rights experts, and comes at a moment of growing disfavour towards Israel among US voters in general and Democratic voters in particular.

After the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced it was issuing an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza, Cuomo, a firm backer of Israel, joined a team of attorneys who said they would defend the Israeli leader.

There Was No Written Pact For Buhari To Hand Over Power To Me — Bakare

“There was no written pact between us. He is late, I will never say anything unfair about him,” he stated.

The cleric also hailed Buhari for giving presidential aspirants in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) the opportunity to nurse their ambitions.

He recalled how the former president gathered all the aspirants at the State House for party members to support whoever emerges as the APC presidential candidate.

“He did his best. One night before the primary, he invited all the presidential aspirants. We sat with him in the conference hall of the villa.

“He said, ‘I have allowed the governors to choose who will succeed them or to go for a second term if they are going for a second term. I am asking you today to allow me to also freely choose the person I desire to succeed me,’” Bakare said.

According to him, the decision went well with party members, including the then-Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; Jigawa governor, Mohammed Badaru, as well as the former Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu.
