Nadiya Hussain says she was given ‘no definitive reason’ for BBC show cancellation

Former Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain claimed the BBC will ‘keep you until you’re of no use to them’ after her shows were axed

Great British Bake Off icon Nadiya Hussain claims she wasn’t given a “definitive reason” for the axing of her BBC programmes. The star, 40, fronted several food series for the BBC since winning GBBO in 2015 – when the show was on BBC1 – including Nadiya Bakes, Nadiya’s Fast Flavours and Nadiya’s Simple Spices.

However, in June, Nadiya revealed in a post shared on social media that BBC bosses had “decided they didn’t want to commission the show any more”, which she described as a “huge turning point”. This week, Nadiya claimed the BBC will “keep you until you’re of no use to them” during a chat with Paul C Brunson in the We Need To Talk podcast.

She was asked whether she was fired for speaking out and she responded: “I worked with the BBC for a really long time, and there’s points where I’ve kind of looked at working with other channels and other broadcasters, the feedback they gave us was you’re too BBC.

“I kind of accepted in my head that I was very BBC, I suppose it means that they’ve got me exactly where they want me, I’m utterly unbiased, and just… you’re neutral, and I am not neutral, I have opinions and I have things to say.

“They’ll keep you ’til you’re of no use to them, and I think that’s what happened. Essentially, I got lots of reasons why they couldn’t commission the show, I had kind of rough reasons as to why they said that they couldn’t commission the show, but no definitive, ‘this is why we are not commissioning your show’.

“Considering my show got great ratings every year, like really good ratings, I can’t see there’s a reason why my show wasn’t recommissioned.”

Nadiya claimed the BBC told her to say she was focusing on “different projects” when he show was not recommissioned despite it being further from the truth.

Instead, she posted a social media statement. At the time, she suggested that the TV industry “doesn’t always support Muslim women like me”.

The chef said: “The BBC have decided that they didn’t want to commission a show. And for me, that was a huge turning point because it’s something I’ve done for the past 10 years.

“I was already on this steady trajectory of change and I was thinking about where I wanted my career to go, and when the BBC decided they didn’t want to commission the show anymore, it really did kind of solidify everything for me, and it made me dig my heels in and think ‘OK, I know where I want to be’.”

She added: “As a Muslim woman, I work in an industry that doesn’t always support people like me or recognise my talent or full potential. There’s a lot of gaslighting, making me feel like what’s actually happening isn’t happening.”

A BBC spokesperson said: “After several wonderful series we have made the difficult decision not to commission another cookery show with Nadiya Hussain at the moment. Nadiya remains a much valued part of the BBC family, and we look forward to working together on future projects.”

Prince William’s ‘strict’ stance on Prince Harry even if he reconciles with King

A royal source has told the Mirror that Prince William is still ‘deeply wounded’ by the allegations levelled against him by Prince Harry in his various interviews and memoir, Spare

Prince William remains “deeply wounded” by Prince Harry and has no plans to contact him – even if he reconciles with other Royal Family members, according to an source.

It is said that King Charles would welcome a reunion with his youngest son the Duke of Sussex, as long as he scales back his public attacks on the family and stops the “endless” interviews. It comes after senior aides to both father and son held a secret peace summit last week – said to be a “significant” step in reuniting the feuding pair. At least three representatives from either side were seen speaking at the Royal Over-Seas League which sits just three minutes from Clarence House.

The meeting has prompted many to wonder if the aides had been discussing a possible meeting between the King and Harry, when he is due to visit the UK in September. However, no representatives for William, who also has an extremely rocky relationship with his brother, were at the meeting.

And a royal source told the Mirror that the Prince of Wales is still reeling over his falling out with his brother, as he continues to struggle with claims made by Harry in various interviews and in his autobiography Spare.

The source said: “The Prince of Wales remains deeply wounded by Prince Harry’s various allegations in his memoir and endless broadcast interviews over the last few years.

“There are no plans to either make contact with or arrange to see the Duke of Sussex in the near future and regardless of any members of the family seeking reconciliation, that is certainly not on the prince’s mind. Both the Prince and Princess of Wales are entirely focussed on their various important duties and their own family.”

It comes as a close friend of the Waleses has also spoken out over the potential reconciliation, telling MailOnline that William and his wife Kate had not been made aware of the meeting, and had been deliberately left out.

“It’s no coincidence that William and Catherine did not have a representative at the Royal Over-Seas League,” says one of the royal couple’s alleged friends. “They were not asked to send anyone and will be treating the talks with extreme caution.”

The insider close to the Waleses referred to one of the biggest obstacles in the way of a “rapprochement process” between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family: the loss of trust.

While the royals haven’t been on speaking terms with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Sussexes have made the most of their platform by engaging in several tell-all interviews in which they dropped several allegations against the Firm, as Harry also did in his autobiography Spare.

But if any reconciliation is to be on the cards between father and son, one source warned it would only come if Harry, 40, stops conducting “endless rounds of broadcast interviews as his only way of communication”.

A source previously told the Mirror : “The King has consistently shown he loves both his sons and as he has done in the past is prepared to meet Harry when their diaries allow such an occasion. It’s not unusual for aides from different households to meet, especially when there is a new influx of staff starting their roles, but of course this is a significant moment.

“Senior members of the family have in the past said to Harry that he must both stop his attacks on the family as well as giving endless rounds of broadcast interviews as his only way of communication. If there is a period of calm and reflection on the part of the Duke of Sussex, then there may be a way forward for him to begin along the road of repairing his relationship with his father.”

Harry recently made public his desire to bury the hatchet with his family, saying in a tell-all interview with the BBC in May that he “would love a reconciliation” with the King and William, as he admitted that he was tired of fighting, and he worried about Charles’ health because he did “not know how much longer [his] father has.” In the interview, the Duke even said: “I would like to get my father and brother back.”

Russia says it needs time to ‘analyse’ Trump’s Ukraine announcements

The Kremlin has said that US President Donald Trump’s recent statements, including a threat to impose sanctions on Russia’s trading partners, are serious and require time to assess.

Amid growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump on Monday announced new deliveries of weapons, including Patriot missile systems, to Ukraine and said that buyers of Russian exports could face severe tariffs if Moscow fails to agree to a peace deal within 50 days, signalling a major policy shift in Washington.

“The US president’s statements are very serious. Some of them are addressed personally to President Putin,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow on Tuesday.

“We certainly need time to analyse what was said in Washington. And if and when President Putin deems it necessary, he will definitely comment.”

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev mocked Trump’s announcement, calling it a “theatrical ultimatum” and saying that “Russia didn’t care”. Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, has frequently issued strident remarks throughout the war.

Russian Senator Konstantin Kosachev was similarly dismissive. Writing on Telegram, he said Trump’s announcement would have no impact on public sentiment in Russia and claimed the United States was setting a trap for Europe — forcing NATO states to pay for weapons that would primarily benefit the US arms industry.

“Only the American military-industrial complex will profit from this,” Kosachev said.

Europeans promise to support weapons shipments

Several European countries pledged to support Trump’s proposal to send more weapons to Ukraine.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Copenhagen would “do its part” to finance Patriot systems for Ukraine, though he gave no specifics. “It seems the US is finally on the right side,” Rasmussen told reporters in Brussels.

The Netherlands and Sweden also said they were exploring ways to support the initiative. Sweden’s Defence Minister Pal Jonson welcomed Trump’s pressure on Russia and confirmed Stockholm would contribute to the delivery of weapons, though details remained unclear.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said the announcements showed that “leadership is once again coming from the US.”

Sanctions package stalls

But in a sign that European unity remains fragile, the European Union’s planned 18th sanctions package stalled on Tuesday after Slovakia requested a delay in the vote. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who visited the Kremlin last year, said the move reflected domestic political concerns over gas supplies amid a looming ban on Russian imports from 2028.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas voiced frustration at the setback. “I’m really sad the sanctions didn’t get approved,” she said. “But I hope they will be passed tomorrow.”

Kallas added that the EU welcomes Trump’s commitment to defending Ukraine but said Washington must also “share the burden”.

Oasis fan successfully sneaks into Heaton Park gig after hatching truly genius plan

A ticketless Oasis fan has claimed he snuck into the band’s sold-out Manchester reunion gig and walked through security unnoticed before making it to the front of the crowd

(Image: Facebook)

One Oasis fan who couldn’t get a ticket for the band’s massive Manchester reunion concert claims he successfully faked his way into the event by dressing as a litter picker.

The Britpop legends performed at Heaton Park over the weekend, their first time back on a Manchester stage in 16 years. With 80,000 fans in attendance and tickets sold out well in advance, many were left outside the gates. While some fans camped behind barriers just to hear the music, others attempted to breach the venue by more creative means.

John Spilsbury, a 42-year-old transport planner from Alfreton, Cheshire, says he used a far more subtle approach.

Donning a yellow hi-vis vest and armed with a bin bag and rubbish grabber, he walked confidently through the gates. “No ticket, no problem,” he wrote in a social media post alongside photos of himself in disguise and later enjoying the gig.

“When you can’t get a ticket for Oasis, so take a hi-viz and grabber and pretend to be a litter picker then walk straight into front standing,” he added.

According to John, security didn’t even try to stop him as he claims he even spent about “30 minutes” picking up litter inside the venue before blending into the crowd near the front of the stage. Once the show began, he removed his gear and joined the party to belt out the iconic lyrics to songs including WonderWall and Don’t Look Back In Anger.

Fans online were quick to praise his cheeky tactic as some called him a “legend” and a “genius”, while others joked about the next concerts being overrun with fake cleaners. “There’ll be 6,000 litter pickers at the next gig,” one person wrote. “Wembley’s going to be spotless,” added another.

While John’s stunt was lighthearted, security at the reunion weekend faced more serious challenges.

On Friday, as many as 50 fans reportedly turned up with a ladder in an attempt to climb the perimeter fence. On Saturday, large groups were seen rushing the gates as Liam and Noel Gallagher took the stage shortly after 8 p.m.

Three more Oasis shows are set to take place at Heaton Park this week, on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, before the band continues the reunion tour with five major shows at Wembley Stadium in London.

Given how high demand has been, and the lengths fans are willing to go, organisers may be facing a fresh security headache ahead of the next dates.

The Mirror has approached Manchester City Council, which operates Heaton Park, for comment on this story.

EU council sanctions individuals, entities, for destabilising Moldova

The European Union has imposed sanctions on seven individuals and three entities it said are responsible for efforts to destabilise Moldova’s democracy, including through vote-buying and political bribery linked to the country’s 2024 presidential election and referendum on EU accession.

In a statement on Tuesday, the European Council said those sanctioned were engaged in “actions aimed at destabilising, undermining or threatening the sovereignty and independence as well as democracy, the rule of law and stability of the Republic of Moldova.”

Among those targeted are figures closely associated with Ilan Shor, the exiled pro-Russian Moldovan businessman and political figure already under EU sanctions. Shor is accused of funding political operations from abroad and leading efforts to spread disinformation.

The council named Shor’s Victory political bloc as one of the three entities sanctioned. It accused the bloc of running orchestrated campaigns to buy votes and spreading misinformation during the EU referendum.

In October 2024, Moldovans voted ‘yes’ to constitutionally codifying their goal to join the EU by a razor-thin margin amid accusations of Russian meddling.

Another group, the Cultural Educational Centre of Moldova, was listed for facilitating interference in the elections. The third entity, A7, was cited for its links to Russian political influence operations.

Those listed will face asset freezes and travel bans across the EU, the council said.

This is the second time the EU has used its special sanctions system for Moldova, which was set up in 2023 at the request of the Moldovan government. It comes as the country faces growing threats linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“The EU remains unwavering in its support for the Republic of Moldova and its peace, resilience, security, stability, and economic growth in the face of destabilising activities by external actors,” the council said, adding that destabilisation attempts would be met with firm measures.

With Tuesday’s announcement, a total of 23 individuals and five entities have been sanctioned under the Moldovan government. EU officials said the listings send a clear signal to actors attempting to undermine the country’s pro-European trajectory.
