Though An Asset, El-Rufai Has Weaknesses To Work On – SDP’s Adebayo

Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has described the new addition to the party, Nasir El-Rufai, as an asset with a proven track record of exemplary public service.

Adebayo extolled the intellectual sagacity of El-Rufai, a two-term ex-governor of Kaduna State, but said the former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has some weaknesses to work on.

“The issue is that I see him as an asset, as a hard-working person and he has a verifiable and measurable track record of public performance”, the SDP chieftain said on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief breakfast programme on Tuesday.

“What I believe is that he has his weaknesses which he needs to work on but I am not his mentor or therapist.

” What I know is that Nigerians have a bird’s eye view of El-Rufai, they will consider some of the comments that he’s made and some other aspects. Overall, Nigerians will say: ‘ Here is a very good public servant. “

On Monday, March 10, 2025, El-Rufai, a northern political heavyweight and one of the strong support systems of ex-Lagos governor Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential poll, announced his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to one of the opposition parties, the SDP.

The former Kaduna governor said the APC has strayed from the dreams and vision of its founding fathers. El-Rufai was involved in the merger of parties that formed the APC in 2013.

Adebayo said El-Rufai was welcomed into the SDP. He said”, Nigeria is diverse and you will find patriots on all sides. It doesn’t mean that if you narrow the discussion to particular areas, I will agree with Nasir El-Rufai on many of them but I agree with the fact that he is a hard-working person and a highly intelligent person. “

The SDP politician lampooned the APC as a party of lousy people with the overriding goal of state capture.

” I consider APC to be a lousy coalition of people who do not know what governance is all about and who are very good with politics of how to capture power.

“When El-Rufai joined them, I thought that that was a loss to the more intellectual side of our society, and I am not surprised that he had a head-on collision with them on many issues”, he said.

‘ El-Rufai Has Learned Lessons ‘

The former presidential candidate also said El-Rufai learned his lesson in the APC. “You can accuse El-Rufai of anything but you cannot accuse him of lack of ideas. I can just say that he joined a lousy group of people and then he’s learned his lessons now but it doesn’t mean that there are not people in APC who are intellectually gifted and who, in different circumstances would have done better.

” I was describing them as a group, it doesn’t mean that there are no intellectuals inside but I disagree with their mission and I disagree with the way they use talents, and I was also surprised that they couldn’t live with him for that long, “he said.

Adebayo said it took some engagements to get El-Rufai to dump the APC and join the SDP. He said the SDP won’t accept some of the ideas that the former Kaduna governor has been used to over the years.

He said”, The idea of the SDP is that if you are going to be in charge of Nigeria, you need to persuade people, El-Rufai did not run or crash into our party, we had discussions with him, we had ideological interactions, and even now, there are works in progress – some of his ideas that he is used to over the years, the SDP will not accept, and we are working on that.

“But my welcome note to him is to say: this is the place you can come to, not that he is fit for every job in the SDP, or every position in the SDP but with time, because he has intellectual curiosity, he has the ability to test ideas and he knows that we are very strong when it comes to social services and social intervention, we don’t believe that you have to privatise everything – we believe that some should be left to the government.

” Don’t be surprised that you’ll hear in two weeks ‘ time, or in two months ‘ time, that Adebayo and El-Rufai disagree vehemently on an issue in SDP.

“He has what it takes to understand the SDP and he’s a hard-working person, and if we work with him, I believe that we can achieve specific outcomes that can be of benefit to the country and that is our focus.

” It doesn’t mean that tomorrow, we are going to have a meeting of the party and he is going to say something or push a position I don’t agree with, and I would say: ‘ Now El-Rufai is now my buddy’. No. “

Adebayo said his party needs to aggregate all talents to throw out the APC in the 2027 poll”. We are going to give Nigerians a chance to defeat the APC and I can tell you that there is nothing good about President Tinubu coming back in 2027, he won’t do well at all, we have seen the record. So, the best thing to do is to be the platform that can make it easy for Nigerians, “he said.

El-Rufai: Tinubu’s Ally-Turned-Outsider

El-Rufai was one of the northern powerbrokers who insisted that the APC presidential ticket for the 2023 general elections be given to a southern candidate in line with the unwritten principle of rotation of power between the southern and the northern regions in Nigeria. This was after the eight-year tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari, from the North-West geopolitical zone.

El-Rufai, who was Kaduna governor between May 2015 and May 2023, was vocal in his choice of ex-Lagos governor Bola Tinubu as the flag bearer of the party in the last general elections.

The then Kaduna governor, alongside his northern colleagues, backed Tinubu against two other northern juggernauts who were also aspirants – – then Senate President Ahmad Lawan and ex-Jigawa governor, Mohammed Badaru.

Tinubu later clinched the APC ticket and was elected Nigeria’s president during the February 2023 presidential poll.

In Nigeria’s political turf where compensation politics has become almost a norm, Tinubu nominated El-Rufai as one of his ministers three months after his inauguration.

However, El-Rufai fell out with the movers and shakers in the current government and was rejected by the Senate during the ministerial screening process. The upper legislative chamber cited security reasons from the Department of State Services as one of the reasons for his rejection.

Since the August 2023 incident, El-Rufai has not been seen in a gathering of APC chieftains. The former governor has also not been seen around the Aso Villa, the seat of power, or near the president whom he vigorously campaigned for in the last poll.

Conversely, El-Rufai was previously spotted with SDP chieftains fuelling defection rumours, which he initially dismissed before the final admission on Monday, March 10, 2025.

Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet’s awkward chat during painful exchange unveiled

Kylie Jenner has been accused of treating Timothee Chalamet like a ‘ possession’, with their relationship likened to that of a mother and son rather than a romantic couple, following a public display of affection over the weekend.

The Kardashian’s star. 27, has been dating Oscar-nominee actor Timothee for two years, and in recent months the pair have put on a united front through award season as Kylie has publicly supported Call Me By Your Name actor Timothee, 29. While mum-of-two Kylie seems completely smitten and more in love than ever, eagle-eyed fans have noticed that the Hollywood actor appears to be more reserved when showing affection for Kylie.

Timothee’s love language appeared evident while the pair were watching a tennis match at India Wells in California on Sunday. While Kylie attempted to pull her boyfriend’s face towards hers for a kiss during a photo opportunity, Oscar-nominated actor barely turned his head, keeping his gaze straight ahead as Jenner struggled to plant the kiss. Social media users have been quick to analyse the seemingly awkward exchange, and have been desperate to discover what was said between the pair during the moment.

Following the awkward interaction, forensic lipreader Jeremy Freeman has finally shared what was said between Kylie and Timothee during their intimate public display of affection. The lipreader has revealed that Kylie requested a kissing photo with her boyfriend but Timothee then told her: “Wait a minute, love” with his eyes remained focused on the tennis match.

Kylie was then seen pulling Timothee closer before gripping his face with her hands and kissing him on the lips as his eyes firmly stayed on the tennis court as he appeared to look unimpressed. Kylie then appeared to command: “Eye contact”, to which her boyfriend responded: “Go on. Yum, yep”.

After the awkward kiss, Timothee moved away from Kylie and sat back in his chair and appeared to grimace before Kylie started to giggle. After Timothee let out a moan, Kylie laughed and asked him: “Are you ok”?. Kylie, still in high spirits, then started to rub her boyfriend’s tummy as he continued to sit back in his chair with his hands in his lap. Timothee replied: “No problem, I’m good, don’t worry about it”.

Timothee then turned his full attention back to the tennis court as he told Kylie to concentrate on the game. “Watch the point, watch the point”, he told her before shouting “atta Ugo” in support of the tennis player. The actor then stood up and shouted: “No, no, how can you miss that. That was a bad miss, that was a bad miss”. Meanwhile, a relaxed Kylie took out of her phone and snapped a photo of the court.

It comes after body language expert Judi James said that despite being one of Hollywood’s ‘ hottest ‘ couples, their PDA made them appear ‘ totally out of sync’. “Timothee obligingly rips off his shades to pose for the camera, but Kylie takes over the choreography in a dominant and demanding way, grabbing his head to try to convert his polite pose into a couples ‘ picture”, James told DailyMail.com.

“Kylie uses cupped hands to try to pull his head round for a kiss while Timothee looks totally reluctant. She pulls his head closer to hers, but he still has his eyes fixed politely on the camera, causing some kind of a ‘ kiss tussle ‘ as she seems to make him respond to her guppy lip kiss despite his obvious reluctance”.

She went on to say: “Even when he does comply, he keeps his eyes open to suggest a lack of passion or romance. The ritual looks very much like a mom trying to get a kiss from her kid when dropping him off at school”.

“Kylie’s next gesture is one that suggests not only that she’s in mum mode here but that she is also keen to mark out Timothee as her possession”, she explained. “As he leans back in his seat, stretching out while still communicating with the guy in front, Kylie stretches out her arm and begins to rub him on his tummy. It’s a very exaggerated gesture with no apparent response from him, making it look again maternal rather than sexual”.

The footage of the couple ignited a heated discussion about the status of their two-year relationship, with critics predicting ‘ the end is coming’. “She is waaaay too clingy! Desperate almost, ‘ one Reddit user commented on Jenner’s behaviour”.

“She is more into him than he is into her”, another chimed in. A third said: “You can’t convince me this relationship is real”. Someone else added: “I love these two and Kylie seems so smitten but it’s kind of clear to see that she’s way more into him that he’s into her. But we don’t know how they are behind closed doors”. Another agreed: “Kylie is stunning and I’m sure Timmy knows how lucky he is. This is literally a 20-second snippet of their relationship, we don’t know these people”.

Paul Danan’s crippling addiction struggles from 17 rehab stints to tragic last promise

Paul Danan bravely opened up about his struggles with alcohol and drugs shortly before his tragic death – and he’d even promised a close friend he was getting sober.

The Hollyoaks actor was just 46 when he died, and was described as a “beacon of light” by his management. Early reports claimed that the star died after he ‘ slipped and fell ‘ at a luxury apartment near Bristol.

Now an inquest starts today over his death. In a podcast last year, Paul told how he was living in a ‘ dry house ‘ in Bristol which is believed to be the flat where he was found dead. Over the years, he had been brutally honest about his issues with addiction. The actor even came close to death after a terrifying overdose that occurred shortly after he left a rehab facility in South Africa.

Back in 2019, Paul explained that he’d sought therapy for his struggles with substance abuse and had undergone ‘ 17 stints in rehab’. On The Jeremy Kyle Show, the actor explained: “They]rehabs] do work. They’re amazing. They’ve saved my life many times but it’s maintenance and it’s about sustaining that recovery and not putting anything before that recovery — even my little boy, who I love to death”.

But the star sadly relapsed on a number of occasions. Speaking on The Dozen with Liam Tuffs podcast last year, he revealed he had an overdose not long after returning from a rehab stint in South Africa following his exit from Hollyoaks.

“It took a bad route, a very dark route. Drugs, I had an overdose. I came out of rehab in South Africa. The psychiatrist had put me on all these anti-psychotics. I was there for months”, he said at the time. “I got back home and my parents were so proud of me. I was fat and horrible and didn’t feel like myself”.

He revealed he left to get cocaine but also bought heroin – which he never used before. Paul continued: “They gave me my keys and car and I detoured and got some gear, some coke. I got a bag of brown]heroin] which I’d never done before. I snorted it and shouldn’t have snorted it because that’s dangerous. I ended up having an overdose really bad”.

Moments after he returned home to go to bed, his parents noticed something was wrong and called the ambulance. His mother found him and he ‘ couldn’t breathe’. She heard him ‘ gagging on his last breath ‘ when she came into the room but couldn’t wake him up.

The Hollyoaks actor previously revealed that his struggles with drugs began after he left the soap in 2001 and moved to LA to try and make it big in Hollywood. He said last year: “You can’t party and do well in Hollywood. You’ve got to be healthy. It was cool but I ended up getting into the wrong type of routine of using drugs”.

Friend and comedian Dapper Laughs has come forward to honour his good friend Paul and even shared how the actor supported him through his own battles.

Content creator Dapper, who’s real name is Daniel O’Reilly, shared a video on his Instagram page and talked about his and Paul’s friendship. During the video, Dapper also shared a voice note conversation he had with the late Hollyoaks actor. In the voice note, Paul can be heard saying: “My brother, just thought I’d touch base really see how you are, how you’re feeling, all that jazz. your therapist Pauly’s here if you wanna have a chat. love you mate”.

Dapper, who appeared in theatre show Time alongside Paul, replied, “I’m fighting a similar fight to what you’ve been fighting for years. The self-destructive stuff and from the point we’re rehearsing I’m gonna go completely sober – no booze, nothing”.

A supportive Paul then told his pal: “I’m so, so, so happy. I know, Dan, I know you’re one of us. I knew it from the minute we left you were like, ‘ let’s go and have a beer’. That’s me, that’s f**king me. You know, don’t you think I f**king wanted to. But I don’t anymore because I know I don’t need it, we don’t need it.

Last summer, Paul was rushed to the hospital and ended up in the ICU with pneumonia. Doctors warned his family that he ‘ might not make it through the night’. The actor smoked cigarettes for many years before switching to disposable vapes – which he would sometimes ‘ go to sleep with ‘ for comfort.

The doctor warned Paul that he would have to use an oxygen tank later in life if he didn’t stop vaping. He previously told The Sun:” I was dead — it’s a miracle I’m here. I’m upstairs puffing away on my vape then suddenly I lost my breath and collapsed. My family called for an ambulance and started giving me CPR, then police arrived and took over before paramedics took me to hospital.

“I was on a machine in ICU and ended up with pneumonia. My family were warned I might not make it through the night. I’m so lucky. The doctor was so, so harsh with me. She told me, ‘ Paul, you don’t know how serious this was and you are going to be in here for a while now, on this oxygen”.

The star said that the flavours and “a YouTube video” convinced him that vaping was safer than cigarettes, adding that his ADHD had made “everything very visual” and “always thought they’d be OK”.

After his death, Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement: “Officers attended a property in Brislington, Bristol, at around 5.20pm yesterday (Wednesday 15 January) where sadly a man in his 40s was declared deceased by paramedics.

” His family have been notified and our thoughts are with them. They have asked for people to respect their privacy during this incredibly difficult time, “the statement read”. His death is not being treated as suspicious and officers are preparing a file for the coroner. “

Paul Danan revealed he nearly died from vape addiction just six months before death

Just months before Paul Danan’s tragic death, he was hospitalised with a vape addiction.

The Hollyoaks actor sadly died earlier this year at the age of 46, with his management team confirming his passing in an emotional statement in January. Paul, who rose to fame playing Sol Patrick on the Channel 4, was described as a “beacon of light to so many” and his “untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him”.

It was later reported that he died after he ‘ slipped and fell ‘ in a luxury apartment near Bristol. He battled many addictions throughout his career and had visited rehab 17 times. The British TV star, whose death inquest is taking place today, was open about his health scares and publicly discussed two terrifying near-death experiences – one of which occurred months before his death when he suffered respiratory failure due to his ‘ obsessive ‘ vaping habit.

Paul revealed he was rushed to hospital when he collapsed and was admitted to intensive care. “I was dead – it’s a miracle I’m here. I’m upstairs puffing away on my vape then suddenly I lost my breath and collapsed”, he said. “My family called for an ambulance and started giving me CPR, then police arrived and took over before paramedics took me to hospital”.

He revealed his family were given the worst news as he explained: “I was on a machine in ICU and ended up with pneumonia. My family were warned that I might not make it through the night”. In a stark warning to fans, he added: “I’m so lucky”. Paul recalled how he had been vaping, and that had been the reason for his health scare.

He said the doctor was “harsh” with him and warned him how serious it was, explaining that if he ever smoked again, he could be on an oxygen tank. Paul quit smoking in 2021 but turned to vaping as he believed “it was the safest way to smoke”. He admitted: “I saw a YouTube video where someone blew cigarette smoke into cotton wool then did the same with a vape. The cotton wool turned black from the smoke from the cigarette, but the wool remained the same colour after the vape vapour hit it… Off the back of that, in my head – because I have ADHD everything is very visual – I’ve always thought they’d be OK”.

However, vaping soon became an addiction. He said: “Everywhere I went I’d have my vape with me. I’d always have one in my hand, I would even go to sleep with it, like a comfort thing”. Paul was open about his battles with addiction and drugs and was even handed cocaine on his first day on the set of Hollyoaks. He said: “The day I started there, someone and I am not going to say who, handed me an eighth of cocaine and I didn’t really know much about coke and he was like, ‘ welcome. ‘ It was the first day, the first read through, I hadn’t even filmed anything”.

Official advice from the NHS states that nicotine vaping is “substantially less harmful than smoking” and is an “effective tool” for quitting cigarettes. However, it is not “completely harmless, and NHS doctors only recommend it for adult smokers to” support quitting smoking and staying quit”.

Bruce Willis’ wife weighs in on Gene Hackman case with heartbreaking admission about carers

Bruce Willis ‘ wife Emma Heming Willis has insisted “caregivers need care too” after the tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy.

The late actor, 95, was found dead in his New Mexico home on February 26, after suffering from a combination of severe heart disease, high blood pressure and advanced Alzheimer’s disease.

Authorities believe the star may have been alone for days in the home with his dead wife, 65, Betsy, who passed away from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

Emma, whose husband, Bruce, has been diagnosed with aphasia and later frontotemporal dementia (FTD), insisted there is “some learning” from the tragic events as she pointed out the vital role carers play in relationships. Taking to Instagram, she wrote: “Caregivers need care too. Period. Full stop”.

Reflecting on the tragic news, the Make Time Wellness Founder continued in a video: “So this is not something I would normally comment on, but I do really believe that there is some learning in this story”.

She added: “It’s just made me think of this broader story, and that is that caregivers need care too and that they are vital, and that it is so important that we show up for them so that they can continue to show up for their person… I think that there’s this common misconception that like caregivers, they got it figured out. They got it covered. They’re good. I don’t subscribe to that. I think that we need to be showing up for them so that they can continue to show up for their person”.

Authorities were alerted to a possible emergency at the Hackmans ‘ home when a pest control worker contacted a neighbourhood security officer after receiving no response at the property. The officer saw the bodies through a window and called emergency services.

Gene was found in a mudroom at his home, while Betsy was discovered in a bathroom near a space heater and scattered pills, according to a search warrant affidavit. The couple’s dog, Zinna, was found deceased in a crate inside a closet, while two other dogs were found alive on the property. A necropsy is being conducted to determine the cause of Zinna’s death.

Gene, widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, met Betsy while she was working part-time at a Los Angeles gym and pursuing a career in classical music. They moved in together in Santa Fe in 1990 and married the following year.

EFL preview: Defining week in Championship survival scrap

Getty Images

Just like that, there are only 10 games remaining of the Championship season and the finishing line is coming into view.

Another line coming into sharp focus in the midweek round of fixtures is the dotted one at the bottom end of the table.

A cluster of teams are trying to either clamber above the drop zone or keep their distance from danger – and six of them go head-to-head on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Can Luton pull a rabbit out of the hat?

The bottom six of the Championship table as of 10 March - and Luton boss Matt Bloomfield during the defeat at Burnley PA Media

If ever there was a six-pointer, Luton Town’s trip to fellow relegation battlers Cardiff City on Tuesday most definitely falls into that category.

The Hatters are five points adrift of safety in 23rd following their 4-0 thrashing at Burnley on Saturday, while the Bluebirds are four points above the bottom three in 21st.

Victory for Luton would close the gap to two points, while defeat would see it extend to eight, underpinning just how important the outcome to this one could prove to be.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the predicament they find themselves in, neither side are in flying form in the league, with Cardiff winning one of their past seven games and Luton tasting victory once in their previous 14 (W1 D3 L10).

Rams face tough test

Derby boss John Eustace celebrates the 2-1 win over his former club Blackburn PA Media

Derby County ended their miserable 12-game winless run with a crucial 2-1 victory over head coach John Eustace’s previous club Blackburn Rovers on Saturday to put them within four points of safety in 22nd.

The Rams could not face a tougher challenge on Tuesday though, as they welcome the Championship’s most in-form team.

Fifth-placed Coventry City’s 3-2 win against Stoke City at the weekend means they have now won nine of their past 10 games – although seven of Derby’s eight wins this season have come at Pride Park.

Pompey and Argyle – passing ships in the night?

Plymouth's Tymoteusz Puchacz puts his hands on his head in frustration during the 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday Rex Features

Portsmouth’s excellent 1-0 victory over leaders Leeds United on Sunday – to make it four wins from five – might just have put them on the brink of excluding themselves from the relegation battle conversation.

They are now 10 points clear of the bottom three in 17th, and the objective of staying safe in their first season back in the Championship for 12 years is so nearly complete.

As for their visitors Plymouth Argyle, the picture is looking bleaker with every passing week.

Two league wins in a row over West Bromwich Albion and Millwall had put Miron Muslic’s side within one point of safety, but a run of five games without victory since then has seen them slip back to the foot of the table and six points adrift of the cut-off mark.

The Pilgrims have not won away from home all season (D5 L13) and a trip to Fratton Park – where Portsmouth have lost once in their past 12 (W9 D2 L1) – does not look the most inviting.

Will Tigers claw above U’s?

Hull City players applaud the travelling fans after the 1-1 draw at Bristol City Rex Features

A run of one defeat in their past five (W2 D2 L1) has helped Hull City drag themselves up to 19th and five points clear of danger, having sat in the bottom three one month ago.

They welcome an Oxford United side on Wednesday night who have been sliding in the wrong direction and could be sucked back into the survival scrap.

Since a new manager bounce under Gary Rowett helped the U’s string together a nine-game unbeaten run, they have lost four of their past six and are now 18th, seven points clear of Derby in 22nd.

Automatic promotion race going to the wire

The top six of the Championship table as of 10 March Rex Features

At the top end of the Championship, the race to win automatic promotion to the Premier League has tightened up once again.

Two points separate Leeds United and Sheffield United in the top two from Burnley in third.

The Clarets take on West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 24 games.

Sheffield United host Bristol City, while Leeds welcome Millwall on Wednesday hoping to bounce back from a first defeat in 18 at Portsmouth.

Schumacher’s Bolton racing into play-off contention

Bolton boss Steven Schumacher claps the fans after the 3-1 win over Birmingham on 4 March Rex Features

The old adage in football suggests that a side who can hit a decent run of form heading into the play-offs often goes on to win promotion.

Well, if Bolton Wanderers can continue in the same vein for their remaining 11 games in League One, they will certainly fancy their chances.

The Trotters have won seven of their past nine games (W7 D1 L1) since Ian Evatt was sacked on 22 January to move into sixth, two points above Huddersfield Town in seventh with a game in hand.

New boss Steven Schumacher has guided Bolton on a six-game unbeaten run, following on from the good work done by interim boss Julian Darby, who won both league games he took charge of.

Promotion rivals collide in League Two

The top 10 of the League Two table as of 10 March

The pendulum seems to swing one way and then the other every week in the race for promotion in League Two.

That is set to happen again with some vital games at the top on Tuesday as four sides hoping to go up lock horns.

Notts County, who are fifth and have picked up one win in six games, welcome eight-placed Grimsby Town, who will move into the play-off spots with a draw.

Port Vale travel to in-form Colchester United as sixth takes on ninth with both sides unbeaten in their past 11 games.
