Borno Garrison Town Offers Haven For People Fleeing Jihadists

This garrison town in Borno State is surrounded by deep trenches that slash into the sand in the air, giving the impression of a fortress.

Despite the recent rise in attacks on military installations by jihadists fighting a bloody 16-year war, these defenses have kept the Monguno largely secure.

Since jihadists have been forced back in Borno since the conflict’s peak in 2015, fighting may have stopped.

However, Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province group have attacked or temporarily overrun a dozen army bases in Borno and the neighboring Yobe state this year.

In 2015, Monguno itself suffered a brief fall from the jihadists.

To protect its soldiers, the Nigerian army has withdrawn from towns and smaller bases and hunkered down in what are known as “supercamps” or garrison towns.

IED explosions have soared in recent years.

Barriers are dotted around the roads that lead to Monguno to halt traffic coming from nearby.

Two soldiers with metal detectors patrol the road as they pass the last trenches in the north and toward Lake Chad, where attacks are most frequent, before moving north.

Major Oluwafemi Seyingbo, 37, the head of this demining unit, stated, “We clear this 10-kilometer&nbsp, (six-mile) route every day to neutralize any explosive devices that may have been hidden there during the night.

In Nigeria’s three northeastern states in 2024, a report from the UN Mine Action Service showed that there were 418 civilian fatalities, twice as many as there were in 2023.

The various entrances to Monguno are controlled by 12 checkpoints run by the Nigerian army.

One of them is led by Major Friday Feekwe, 37.

We thwarted two attacks in a few weeks in March. He claimed that the attackers arrived in large numbers and had large amounts of weapons.

A 12. 7 mm machine gun and an intimidating watchtower covered in camouflage netting have since been installed at the checkpoint.

For the past four years, Boko Haram has targeted Monguno.

The organization’s kidnapping of nearly 300 schoolgirls from Chibok, which is also a part of Borno, was at its height in 2013 and 2014 and was well-known worldwide.

“This place offers peace and security.”

The Multinational Joint Task Force, which consists of troops from three Lake Chad nations: Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin, has made Monguno a haven for the people of Borno.

The Nigerian sector command is located at the massive base.

Umar Bullam, who was working outside the Monguno base, was in complete safety with a spade in hand.

After Boko Haram slashed my crops and fertiliser, the 30-year-old said, “I had land more than five kilometers from here that I had to abandon.”

The 35-year-old had lived in southern Niger for 11 years before moving to the Monguno registration center for displaced people.

The mother of seven reportedly said in a low voice, “in the middle of the night, the jihadists arrived in her village and killed the adults and kidnapped the children.”

Aisha, 15, one of her daughters, was kidnapped that night, but she hasn’t heard anything.

Nearly half of Nigeria’s 3. 6 million internally displaced people are from Borno State alone, according to the UN.

According to Vincent Foucher, a researcher at the CNRS or the French Institute for Scientific Research, “Nigeria has prevented jihadist groups from capturing major cities as they did in 2013-2014 or 2016”.

The country still has a lot of trouble attacking jihadists in the heart of their territories in more remote areas, he said, despite a reinforced trench system and aerial surveillance.

Given that the groups now have new means of attack, as demonstrated by the first drone strikes against the Wajiroko military base in northeast Nigeria on December 24, the resurgence of attacks is all the more worrying.

‘I tried Stacy Solomon’s hair oil and it quenched my dry strands in the heat’

The ideal summertime product is Stacey Solomon’s favorite curly hair oil. The X-Factor alumni has created the ideal oil to keep your tresses shiny in the summer if you’re having trouble with dry hair and split ends.

REHAB hair oil is the ideal tonic for summer follicles.

Bleach, pollution, hot air and 30C sun is not a good combination for any head of hair. Mine always suffers by this point in the year and often looks like it needs a good drink.

Running my hands through my hair by mid July starts to feel more like a knotty haystack than anything else. This is where Stacey Solomon-owned REHAB’s Dose 1.2 Curly Hair Oil comes in to save my frizzy locks.

Although I do not have naturally curly hair, the oils in these capsules are there to hydrate and combat frizz – which is everything I need when my hair starts to dry out in the heat. The eight oils include avocado oil, sunflower oil and castor oil. Instead of my hair almost standing on end with dryness, leading to more split ends, it now sits more sleekly on my shoulders and has a gloss to it.

rehab capsules
Eight oils were included in the capsules, which saved my summer hair.

You can drop each capsule into your sink and watch it dissolve before your eyes, which is amazing because it is also biodegradable. Although this costs more than £26, the ingredients and gorgeous packaging make it seem like it’s worthwhile.

Perfect for a beach vacation, the individual capsules are opened with a quick twist and snap.

Each capsule contains a lot of product that would be beneficial for thicker or longer hair. Even though it initially appeared a little greasy, I’ve been soaking my hair in it and letting it sit. It eventually seems to soak up all of its moisture.

Alternately, apply half a capsule to your arms and chest to moisturize them. This oil also smells like a beachy cocktail, smells luxurious, and has high-quality ingredients in it.

Hair-care adoration Ariana Tidwell has a second glowing review for the product. What an amazing hair oil, she said, “I love trying new brands and was pleased with the outcomes.” My hair appears to have been reborn.

Customers claim that REHAB’s new travel-friendly hair oil will stop frizz while also offering the same level of protection for your skin as your skin does for your hair in the summer.

The new Sunshine Spritz UV Protection Hair Oil from REHAB just came out. It currently has a 20% discount, lowering the price from its regular price of £26 to £20.80. To protect against UV rays, this oil includes a blend of strand-smoothing oils and octocrylene. Additionally, it comes in REHAB’s signature single-use capsules, which are ideal for traveling because you can bring as many or as few as you need.

Protests held across UK supporting banned Palestine Action despite arrests

In response to police’s warnings that those who show support for the proscribed activist group face arrest, protests are taking place all over the UK.

As part of a Defend Our Juries campaign coordinated by Defend Our Juries, demonstrations have been taking place on Saturday in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Truro, and London.

According to London’s Metropolitan Police, 55 people were detained on Saturday in Parliament Square after displaying placards in their support for the group.

At the same time last weekend, 70 people were detained at similar demonstrations in Parliament Square, according to the Met police, and 120 have been detained nationwide, according to Defend Our Juries.

After a ban against the organization was announced on Saturday, July 12, 2025, police officers removed a person from Parliament Square, London, to demand that the organization be called off. (James Manning/PA via AP)

The cofounder of Palestine Action, Huda Ammori, will ask for permission to challenge the home secretary’s decision to outlaw the organization under “anti-terror” laws at a High Court hearing on Monday.

According to the Terrorism Act of 2000, supporting or collaborating with the direct action group is now a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison, placing the organization on par with armed organizations like al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS).

Following the rallies, Westminster authorities increased their police presence.

On Saturday, a counterprotest by Stop the Hate, an anti-Israel organization, will also take place in London.

Those who support Palestine Action are likely to be committing an offence, according to Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who is also likely to be detained.

Five people showed up in court on Saturday over a Palestinian Action protest at the site of an Israeli-linked defense company.

According to “counter-terrorism” police, members of the organization are accused of breaking into the Elbit Systems site near Patchway, Bristol, on August 6, 2024, allegedly with sledgehammers and whips.

Police officers and a security guard were assaulted, according to the Westminster Magistrates’ Court, and more than $2 million in damages were caused ($2.68 million).

The alleged crimes have a “terrorist connection,” according to the prosecution. The five defendants face violent disorder, criminal damage, and aggravated burglary.

Palestine Action describes itself as a “pro-Palestinian organization that directly disrupts the British arms industry.”

It has organized hundreds of protests all over the UK since its founding in July 2020, with a particular focus on Elbit Systems, an Israeli arms manufacturer, to challenge the operations of businesses they claim profit from Israeli military operations.

The group’s typical methods include destroying equipment, chopping themselves to machinery, and painting buildings with red paint.

Barcelona open talks over Rashford deal

Marcus Rashford’s transfer to Barcelona is on the verge of completion.

Since Rashford suggested a new challenge in December after being dropped by head coach Ruben Amorim, the Spanish giants have always been his preferred destination.

According to reports, intermediaries have been in talks with BBC Sport, and it’s thought a deal has been reached.

Earlier this summer, Spanish champions Barcelona were interested in signing Spain winger Nico Williams.

However, Athletic Bilbao gave the 22-year-old a new 10-year contract.

Rashford made 17 appearances on loan at Aston Villa during the second half of last season, scoring four goals and adding six assists.

In a dispute over their futures, he is one of five United players told to train separately from Amorim’s squad, and he is also the highest-paid of the five.

While Amorim is still with United, the 27-year-old is unsure whether he will play there again.

In order to strengthen Amorim’s squad, he would be very beneficial to United.

With the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo costing more than £130m, potential deals must be made through departures.

We enjoy Rashford-Deco.

Deco, the Barcelona sporting director, has previously expressed his admiration for Rashford and Luis Diaz, both of whom.

He told Catalan radio station RAC1 in May that “there are names that we know and that could improve the team.”

He declared, “We like Luis, Rashford, and other players.”

Rashford for his part stated last month that he wanted to play alongside Lamine Yamal, a teenager, at Barcelona.

Everyone wants to use the best, according to the statement. In an interview with Spanish influencer Javi Ruiz, he said, “Hopefully, we’ll see.”

Rashford’s Old Trafford contract runs until June 2028, but the England international was unable to sign a new squad number and was forced to travel to Carrington to train there as the first team traveled to Sweden, where they will face newly promoted Leeds United in their opening pre-season game on Saturday.

Rashford made his debut as an 18-year-old under Louis van Gaal in February 2016 at his hometown club, rising through the academy ranks.

Since being substituted for Czech side Viktoria Plzen for a 2-1 Europa League win over the Czech side on December 12, he has made 138 goals for the club in 426 appearances.

Rashford was dropped for the league game against Manchester City at the Etihad later that month after Amorim expressed his concerns over the work he and team-mate Alejandro Garnacho had put in.
