Morocco Crush Niger Republic To Seal Qualification For 2026 World Cup

Morocco became the first African group to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after defeating 10-man Niger 5-0 in Rabat on Friday to win Group E.

After Abdul-Latif Goumey was sent off, Ismael Saibari scored twice in the opening half, and Azzedine Ounahi’s goals in the second half and Ayoub el Kaabi, Hamza Igamane, and Azzedine Ounahi completed the comeback.

With two games to go, Morocco earned an unassailable lead with a sixth straight victory, scoring 18 points over Tanzania, and clinching its seventh world championship appearance with a win.

Morocco won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, beating a group that included Croatia and Belgium, and knocking Spain and Portugal out in the knockout stages.

With a 2-0 defeat to France in the semi-finals, their stunning run came to an end.

Only Ounahi of the scorers against Niger made the 2022 World Cup squad, along with Saibari from PSV Eindhoven and coach Walid Regragui who has since introduced new faces, such as Saibari from Dutch club PSV.

Egypt defeated Ethiopia 2-0 in Group A in Cairo thanks to late penalties from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush from Premier League players.

If Egypt defeats second-placed Burkinabe on Tuesday, they will join Morocco at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As South Sudan defeated South Sudan 4-1 in Juba to maintain its lead in Group B, Newcastle United signing Yoane Wissa scored one of the goals.

After Sweden international Alexander Isak left Newcastle for Liverpool in a record-setting British move, Wissa made a £50 million ($67 million) deal to move from Brentford.

The Congolese hope to win the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when Zaire was the nation’s name.

South Africa triumphs

Before Keer Majak scored a consolation goal, Cedric Bakambu added a second and Wissa added a fourth to give the visitors a three-goal lead at half-time.

Following a 2-0 victory over Sudan in Diamniadio with goals from Kalidou Koulibaly and Pape Matar Sarr, Senegal now leads DR Congo by one point heading into a top-of-the-table showdown in Kinshasa on Tuesday.

South Africa won their third straight game 3-0 away victory over neighbor Lesotho in Bloemfontein, keeping them five points clear of Group C.

Because Lesotho’s home game was moved because the mountain kingdom lacks a FIFA-approved stadium, it was moved to the city in central South Africa, which is 145 kilometers away by road from the border.

Mohau Nkota, who left renowned Soweto club Orlando Pirates last month for Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, scored his first international goal for Bafana Bafana (the Boys) on 15 minutes.

Within four minutes of the second half, Oswin Appollis and Premier League returnee Lyle Foster scored.

However, South Africa’s victory came at a price, with defenders Thabo Moloisane and Nyiko Mobbie both retiring injured before Tuesday’s crucial game against Nigeria.

Benin, who defeated Zimbabwe 1-0 in Abidjan with a Steve Mounie goal, has 16 points, five more than South Africa. Rwanda will host Niger on Saturday, nine points clear of the leaders.

Gambia defeated Kenya 3-1 in a surprise 3-1 victory in Nairobi thanks to second-half clinical finishing, with Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh scoring the winning goal.

The outcome, however, did not have an impact on Group F, with the Ivory Coast’s current champions traveling to Gabon on Tuesday, likely to decide the winner.

Serhou Guirassy, a prolific scorer for Borussia Dortmund last year, scored 38 goals in all competitions for Guinea in their 3-0 victory over Somalia.

Guirassy will almost certainly miss the World Cup due to their disappointing campaign, which leaves them eight points behind Group G leaders Algeria.

Israeli forces kill Palestinian in occupied West Bank as violence surges

Following the call this week from Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to appoint the majority of the territory, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank.

Ahmed Shehadeh, 57, was shot dead near the al-Murabba’a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank on Friday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, who identified the dead man as Ahmed Shehadeh, 57.

Amid Ahmed, the Red Crescent’s Emergency and Ambulance Center in Nablus, was quoted by the Palestinian news agency Wafa as saying Israeli soldiers had prevented his team from reaching the shooting location.

A man was “hurled a suspicious object” at soldiers operating nearby, according to the Israeli military’s statement, which they “eliminated” after which they “eliminated” him.

Further south, troops carried out numerous raids in Bethlehem, with soldiers reportedly setting up a military checkpoint in the Khalayel al-Louz area southeast of the city, according to Wafa.

Additionally, according to the news agency, soldiers carried out raids on the towns of Artas and al-Ubayyat, where they dug up Palestinians’ posters from Israeli forces.

In addition, Israeli settlers stormed the Masafer Yatta village south of Hebron with knives and sticks, injuring 20 people, including a three-month-old infant.

Nine people were taken to a hospital for treatment, according to Palestinian activist Osama al-Makhmara, who claimed injuries ranged from bruises and fractures to stab wounds.

In the village, Israeli authorities cited “unlicensed construction,” and they destroyed 25 homes, agricultural structures, and water wells four months ago.

Far-right finance minister and settler leader Smotrich, who said on Wednesday that Israel should annex roughly 82 percent of the West Bank, gave Israel’s efforts to expand illegal settlements there a new lease of life.

Smotrich argued that “the Israeli government should have the least number of Palestinian [people] in place of them” and that “it should be subject to Israeli sovereignty for the time being.”

In 150 illegal settlements and 128 outposts spread out across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, more than 700, 000 settlers, or 10% of the population, reside.

Former Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) communications director Xavier Abu Eid reported to Al Jazeera that Israeli flags and settlements can now be seen between Ramallah and Nablus, which is 30-40 kilometers long (18-25 miles).

He claimed that it was obvious that settlers and the Israeli army were creating the maps that Smotrich had presented.

Too little, too late

Smotrich’s maximalist campaign was launched as France, Britain, Belgium, Australia, and Canada all pledged later this month to formally recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Israel’s takeover plans for the entire enclave are being accelerated by its West Bank annexation plans in the background as a result of the diplomatic push.

Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen announced on X on Friday that France and Saudi Arabia are leading the international effort to find a two-state solution. She described it as “the most significant international effort to create the conditions for a two-state solution in a long time.”

A resolution was adopted by the Arab League’s foreign ministers in Cairo the day before that Israel “issued implicit threats to occupy or annex further Arab lands” to prevent peaceful coexistence in the Middle East.

Any lasting resolution, according to the League, must be based on a two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative of 2022, which demand Israeli total withdrawal from the 1967-occupied territories.

However, Abu Eid from the PLO claimed that time was running out. Many people believe there is no longer a two-state solution, and he said that the late international recognition of the state of Palestine was once again perceived as too late.

arrests in large numbers

At least 70 people have been detained in dozens of villages over the past week as Israel accedes to more Palestinian territory in the West Bank as a result of its massive arrest campaign.

A “large number of villagers” were detained in the town of Haris, close to Salfit, according to Wafa reports arrests made there by village council head Omar Samara, deputy head of village council Tayseer Kulaib, and deputy head of village council Tayseer Kulaib.

In Qalqilya City, police raided family homes, and they also made an arrest on a man.

Rights groups have long been critical of the Israeli prison conditions in which Palestinians are imprisoned, along with reports of abuse and medical neglect.

Bilal Barghouti, a 39-year-old Beit Rima prisoner serving a life sentence in Israel’s Gilboa prison, was referred to as “slow murder and systematic torture,” according to a statement released by the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office.

Former detainees claim that Barghouti, who has a variety of chronic illnesses, has lost weight, been barred from visits, and been subjected to beatings, insults, and scalding with hot water.

Since the start of the Gaza War, Israeli forces have made more than 19, 000 arrests across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, according to The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, which on Friday reported.

According to its statement, which was obtained by news agency Wafa, the figure does not include arrests in Gaza itself, which are believed to be in the thousands.

Harry Styles and Zoe Kravitz’s fling ‘turning into something more’ as things ramp up

Actress Zoe Kravitz and pop star Harry Styles have been caught looking cosy in New York City, Rome, and Brooklyn, claiming they are “joking themselves” if they don’t care about the chemistry.

Harry Styles and Zoe Kravitz seem to not be able to get enough of each other as they were spotted getting cosy on another outing while globe trotting. The pair, who are doing nothing to fight off romance rumours, stepped out in Brooklyn together this week arm in arm.

It comes after they were first spotted on what looked like a date in Soho, London where they were “snogging like teenagers”. Just days later, Harry, 31, and Zoe, 36, jetted to Rome where they linked arms and took in the sights.

Batman actress Zoe is said to be “whisked off her feet” by One Direction’s Harry. Their latest outing together fuelled rumours even more as Harry was snapped with his arm around Zoe while they walked down a street.

Harry and Zoe have kept a tight-lipped about the potential romance, but it has been suggested that something is brewing between them.

“They both like each other and friends don’t know who likes each other more but it is turning into something more than just a casual situation,” a source told the Daily Mail. “They might not want to think it is, but surprise surprise, it is getting interesting.”

They continued, “They are just kidding themselves because their friends see this could be something special and if they want to make it that, they should.”

The source continued, “There is no reason for Zoe and Harry to play games.” Harry and Zoe have previously engaged in high-profile romances, with Channing Tatum splitting from Magic Mike in October.

After three years of dating, they ended their relationship. After spending 14 months together, Harry and Taylor Russell split last year.

He had also had a fling with now-engaged Taylor Swift, who is close friends with Zoe. Some fans have feared Zoe could get on the wrong side of Taylor, who has previously expelled members of her circle when loyalties changed.

Harry has been called a “romantic” and treats anyone who dates him “so well” as the pair get closer.

Another source told The Sun that Zoe considers Harry to be “cool without trying” and even compared him to her famous father Lenny Kravitz.

When most people are trying so hard to break through or stay relevant, Zoe believes Harry is cool without trying, which is a very attractive quality in Hollywood.

She finds it refreshing when Harry treats everyone the same, regardless of whether they are famous or not. Being like that and having a famous father in his life, Zo was taught the virtues of being kind and never be a diva.

Portugal’s UEFA qualifying match against Armenia on Saturday will be their first of its kind since the passing of their forward, Diogo Jota, who will represent them in the world cup.

Portugal’s midfielder Ruben Neves, who died in July, will wear the number 21 jersey of his late friend Jota during games for the country and has a tattoo on his left calf in his honor.

At a ceremony held at Portugal’s training facility late on Tuesday in preparation for the team’s World Cup qualifiers against Armenia and Hungary, Neves said, “I and the entire national team will do everything we can to keep Diogo with us, on our team.” The other team in Group F is the Republic of Ireland.

Jota and Andre Silva were killed in a car accident on July 3rd.

Neves, who plays for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, was close to Jota at the ceremony, which included the recently appointed prime minister, president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, president of Portugal, and Cristiano Ronaldo. They also played together at the English club Wolverhampton and Portugal.

Jota, who was wearing the number 21, was pictured embracing him in a video that the Portuguese federation posted on X of Neves.

Jorge Costa, a former Portugal international who died last month of cardiac arrest, was also the subject of Tuesday’s ceremony.

Jota and Costa were described as “men who loved football, loved their country, loved their national team, men who courageously and devoted their lives to defend the colors of our flag,” according to Pedro Proenca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation.

Jota and Costa were given medals that their families accepted and were given as Commanders of the Order of Merit following their posthumous honor.

Another nod to Jota’s memory, the federation claimed the squad consisted of “23 (+ 1)” players.

Portugal hasn’t yet qualified for the World Cup, so why?

Due to the accomplishments of some of the top seeds in the 2025 Nations League, which culminated in June, Portugal and 23 other teams are only currently enrolled in the World Cup qualifying program.

In the 2025 final, Portugal won the title of champion after beating Spain 5-3 on penalties.

Spain defeated France in the semifinal, while Portugal defeated Germany. The rest of the qualifiers for the later stages of that competition are currently only qualifying for the World Cup.

Head-to-head

With four wins and two draws already recorded in the countries’ previous meetings, this is their seventh meeting.

The Portuguese won the last meeting 3-2 in Armenia during a Euro qualifying match in 2015.

News from the Armenian team

Norberto Briasco misses out due to a family issue, while Narek Grigoryan is hurt.

However, Grant-Leon Ranos and Lucas Zelarayan are both back in the first-team plans.

news from the Portugal team

Diogo Dalot has been forced to withdraw due to a muscle issue, while Rafael Leao is out with a calf injury.

In the previous encounter between the two teams, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in five goals against Armenia, including a hat-trick.

Armenia had a starting lineup in mind.

Cancarevic, Hovhannisyan, Mkrtchyan, Arutyunyan, Muradyan, Tiknizyan, Iwu, Dashyan, Bichakhchyan, Zelarayan, Barseghyan, and others

Four games in 325 days – do we know anything about Tuchel’s England yet?

A total of 325 days have passed since Thomas Tuchel was named England’s new manager.

And, yet, here we are still trying to work out exactly what to expect from his Three Lions team.

The German officially took over on 1 January – two and a half months after his unveiling – but England have only played four games since, with Wayne Rooney describing the fixtures as “nonsense” in any case.

Earlier this year, BBC Sport looked at the various formations, playing styles and tactics Tuchel might adopt, ranging from the fast and furious to the more cautious and pragmatic.

A small sample size…

One thing that has been unique to Tuchel is the relatively small number of games he’s taken charge of in the opening months of his tenure compared to other recent England managers.

Even Sam Allardyce, not included in the graphic above, had a higher games-to-days ratio during his brief reign in 2016 – and he was sacked after one match and 67 days.

“Tuchel may have only had four games, but much of this was his own doing as he delayed taking over until 1 January, missing the chance to take charge of Nations League games away to Greece and at home to Republic of Ireland,” said chief football writer Phil McNulty.

“In the same period of time, his predecessors had more matches to make their plans.

“Roy Hodgson had 14 games, while Fabio Capello had nine and Gareth Southgate, Steve McClaren and Sven-Goran Eriksson all had eight.

Who’s he picked and who’s he left out?

Unsurprisingly, fewer games has meant fewer new faces.

Dan Burn, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Trevoh Chalobah are the only three players to earn their first caps since Tuchel took over – all defenders.

But Djed Spence, Elliot Anderson and Jarell Quansah could also make their debuts after being named in the current squad to face Andorra and Serbia.

Anderson and Quansah both played a key role in England’s success at the European Under-21 Championship in June.

Including his four-match stint as interim boss, Southgate gave debuts to six players during his first year in charge – albeit across far more matches than Tuchel.

“Squad choices have varied between the safe selection of an old guard, such as the continued presence of 35-year-old Jordan Henderson, and the bizarre, as when Ivan Toney was summoned from the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ahli then only given two minutes as a substitute against Senegal before being dropped altogether,” added McNulty.

“He has deliberately cut his squad from 26 last time 24 for this double header, and he spoke with a greater sense of urgency, talking up competition and adopting a ruthless approach, exemplified by Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Burnley veteran Kyle Walker being dropped.”

The squad selection has, however, given us a few clues about his approach.

“Tuchel has referenced the need for the England national team to mirror the dominance and style of the Premier League and his team selections, influenced partly by injuries, has mirrored this statement,” said football tactics correspondent Umir Irfan.

How are England trying to play?

What about Tuchel’s tactics?

“It is clear that the plan is to attempt to be a more physically imposing, ball-dominant and exciting team,” added Irfan.

“To start, England have played in a 4-4-1-1 shape. Then, in build-up, they have moved between two common shapes, a 2-3-5 and a 3-2-5 with the full-backs key to this.

“In the 3-2-5, one full-back will accompany two centre-backs. The three at the back in possession is used as a solution to build up around certain opposition shapes, with the additional player providing an extra passing option.

“When the shape becomes a 2-3-5, both full-backs are often used either side of a defensive midfielder, usually Declan Rice.

“This does two things. Firstly, it frees the second central midfielder to push up. This has been Morgan Rogers and Curtis Jones on occasion. Secondly, it also ensures that central areas behind the ball are occupied by good defenders, providing structural and individual defensive quality.

“England’s attacking midfielder and striker still drop deep to show for the ball like they did under Southgate. This opens up space down the middle for players to run into after an opposition central defender has been dragged out of position. Runs from deep areas including from full-backs like Lewis-Skelly have exploited these spaces well.

“Tuchel’s attack is positional in nature, with players occupying specific zones on the pitch, but he encourages rotations between these zones, as long as somebody is in each zone.

Thomas TuchelGetty Images

Is it working?

The jury is still out.

When you compare England’s three World Cup qualifiers under Tuchel with their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign under Southgate – the best like-for-like comparison in terms of standard of opposition – the numbers are broadly similar.

However, there are some signs of encouragement too. Stats measuring possession, passing sequences and touches inside the opposition’s box are all up.

The average number of goals per game has dropped but England outperformed their expected goals stat in 2022, while they’re currently not scoring as many goals as they should be. Continue as they are and they should flow.

But what about the eye test?

“The game against Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday is as near to a formality as it gets in international football, but the subsequent game against Serbia in the hostile surroundings of Belgrade will be more of an acid test,” said McNulty.

Since Thomas Tuchel took over as England’s new manager, there have been 325 days.

Yet, we are still trying to figure out what his Three Lions team should be like.

Two and a half months after his unveiling, the German took over, but England have only played four games, with Wayne Rooney in any case calling the matches “nonsense.”

BBC Sport examined Tuchel’s possible formations, playing styles, and tactics earlier this year, ranging from the quick and furious to the more cautious and pragmatic.

a small sample size…

In contrast to other recent England managers, Tuchel has had a unique approach to the number of games he’s taken charge of in the first few months of his tenure.

Even Sam Allardyce, who is not included in the graphic above, had a higher games-to-days ratio during the course of his brief reign in 2016, who was fired after one game and 67 days.

Although Tuchel may have only played four games, a large portion of it was his own fault since he was unable to take over the Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland until January 1, according to chief football writer Phil McNulty.

His predecessors had more opportunities to develop their plans in the same time.

Fabio Capello had nine games, while Gareth Southgate, Steve McClaren, and Sven-Goran Eriksson all had eight.

He chose whom and who he chose who he chose?

Unsurprisingly, fewer games have resulted in fewer new faces.

Only three players, all defenders, have won their first caps since Tuchel took over, including Dan Burn, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Trevoh Chalobah, who are also the only ones to have earned one.

However, after being chosen to face Andorra and Serbia in the current squad, Djed Spence, Elliot Anderson, and Jarell Quansah could also make their debuts.

At the European Under-21 Championship in June, Anderson and Quansah both contributed a significant amount to England’s success.

In his first year in charge, Southgate made six debuts, including four games against Tuchel, during his four-game tenure as interim boss.

The wise choice of an old guard, such as Jordan Henderson’s continued presence, and the bizarre, such as when Ivan Toney was called out of the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ahli, who was then only given two minutes as a substitute against Senegal before being completely dropped, said McNulty.

“He purposefully cut his squad from 26 last time out for this double header, and he spoke with greater urgency, bringing up competition, and adopting a ruthless approach, as demonstrated by the dropping of Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Burnley’s Kyle Walker,” he said.

However, the squad selection has provided some insight into his strategy.

Football tactics expert Umir Irfan said that Tuchel has made a point about the need for the England national team to emulate the dominance and style of the Premier League and that his team selections, which were partially influenced by injuries, have done so.

England’s strategy for playing?

How are Tuchel’s tactics doing?

The intention is to make a more physically demanding, ball-dominant, and exciting team, Irfan added.

England have started with a 4-1-4-1 formation. The full-backs are essential to this because they have switched between two common shapes during the build-up, a 2-3-5 and a 3-3-2-5.

One full-back will play alongside two centre-backs in the 3-5-2 game. The additional player offers an additional passing option as a result of the three at the back of the field in possession’s ability to resurrect around particular opposition shapes.

“On occasion when the shape changes to 2-3-5, Declan Rice, a defensive midfielder, is used either side of the full-back.

There are two purposes for this. The second central midfielder is given a second chance to push up. Morgan Rogers and Curtis Jones have occasionally been involved. Second, it makes sure that strong defenders are present in the key areas, giving structural and defensive quality.

“As they did under Southgate, England’s attacking midfielders and strikers continue to drop deep for the ball.” After an opposition central defender has been dragged out of position, there is room for play in the middle. These spaces have been well exploited by runs from deep, including full-backs like Lewis-Skelly.

Tuchel encourages rotations between these zones as long as someone is in each zone because his attack is positional in nature, with players occupying particular ones on the pitch.

Thomas TuchelGetty Images

Does it function properly?

The verdict is not yet known.

The numbers are generally comparable when compared to England’s three World Cup qualifiers under Tuchel and their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign under Southgate, the best like-for-like comparison in terms of opposition standard.

There are also some encouragement indicators, though. There are stats that track touches, passing patterns, and possession inside the opposition’s box.

England outperformed their expected goalscoring percentage in 2022, but the average goal per game has decreased. They are currently not scoring as many goals as they should. They should flow naturally as they are.

What about the eye test, though?

The Saturday game between Andorra and Serbia at Villa Park will be more of an “acid test,” according to McNulty, “but the next game will be more of an acid test.”
